Another hidden gem found in PB. Best Italian restaurant that we tried so far here in SD. A little farther where we live, but the driving was so worth it! We ordered pasta carbonara and it was so creamy and delicious. Not too salty and not too bland. Just right. Also, their marinara spaghetti was so yummy. We've been driving past this place for a while and always wanted to check it out. We finally did, they are open and seating people. There is no outdoor seating. The place is very old school. We ordered the garlic cheesy bread that was wonderful. I had the pasta al forno which I felt lacked flavor. My husband had the combo ravioli and lasagna and he also mentioned the ravioli lacked flavor but that the lasagna was really good. They also are famous for their cannolis so we had to have it. I switched from Filippis to Volare about a year ago. The pizza had more flavor than Filippis at the time. I tasted oregano in the sause than Filippis. Now i would not call it pizza, i would call it focaccia! Bread covered with a light brush of sause, not many peperoni slices, and a light blanquet of cheese, mind you, i ordered it with extra cheese. Im worried about the state of the economy and how much rent Volare needs to cough up, but please, let us know how much your cutting back, do to the inflated economy. If you true to your customers, your customers will be true to you. Im going to give them one more try, i will order the Veggie Pizza. Its my favorite, and it will be yours. read more

Now this is old school. To me, the restaurant has been here since I first moved to San Diego. And it shows. Paint peeling outside, wood furniture that needs lamination, and a good old welcome with great food. I always wanted to come here and was lucky enough to come with a couple of coworkers and one regular. Services is good. We got big smiles from everyone and never had to ask anyone to remove our used plates or refill our drinks because they were constantly doing that for all the tables. To me, there doesn't appear to be many tables so you get great attention. And the only place is rigged for romance meaning the place is dimly lite. I got the chicken piccata and was happy. The chicken had absorbed some of the sauce and you could taste the wine in the meat. And I really like the tiny bit of sourness from the lemon and capers you get. I wasn't crazy about the mushrooms. You can tell they're canned and not fresh. The crushed tomatoes for my spaghetti sauce could have been smaller and that portion of the meal could have been drained more but overall flavorful. Overall four stars. The menu could be reprinted. Redesigning the parking lot would add more space. And better lighting would help. But for a great Italian meal you don't have to go all the way to Little Italy. Now excuse me, dessert menu isn't doing it for me. Can we say 85 degrees? M read more

Let me tell you the fettuccini Alfredo with chicken, lasagna located within mozzarella on top, large pepperoni and cheese pizza plus ravioli were delicious. Not to mention the calamari and cheese garlic bread added the perfect accent to the meals. We didn't dine inside we took our orders to go and the food was still amazing. My wife & daughter did the pappardelle pasta dish with mushrooms & scallops, which was also delicious. I had the chicken cacciatore, it was good, but need more sauce. The challenge of Volare is that the interior of the restaurant probably hasn't been changed in....maybe ever. It is super dated. If they just put a bit of effort into brightening the place up, it would make a huge difference. Old tables & chairs, no table cloths, dark paneling, old carpet, etc... You literally walk into a time machine. All that being said, Volare doesn't try to be anything it isn't, just a no frills old-school restaurant with good food and reasonable prices. read more

Sadly the customer service here has gone downhill. We really do miss the mom and pops feeling. We ordered for takeout and were told 35 mins so we drove from La Mesa and got there in 20. We figured we would pay first and get the order whenever it's ready, no rush. But instead, the lady at the front started to yell out to everyone " they're early, they're early, they're early ...ummm ok yes we're early, we know that, we're not rushing you. Pfff on top of that, they were so rude! The take out ordering system seems flawed if that's how they treat customers now a days. We waited in the car until our order was ready and received a phone call when our food was ready as they told us to. Rude girl on the phone said your food is ready, I replied okay, then she clicked on me. As I went inside to get my food, rude girl again slid my food across the table and turned around and left. Honestly, I've said nothing and done nothing to this girl. I made an order, paid, and waited. Sadly the decade relationship with Volare has come to an end. Like you walked into an Italian home and someone's grandmother were in the kitchen cooking and serving you. Portion sizes are large enough to make you want to unbotton your pants before you stand up, and dishes so delicious and flavorful they'll make you use the garlic bread to scrape the plate afterwards. Although Volare is an old restaurant and doesn't really have good decor, it still has that vibe, the food is amazing. It's my comfort food. The staff are so nice and will make sure you always have everything you need. They are organized and there are many places to sit. As well as a M N M candy machine for 50 cents and crayons for kids. The price is AMAZING! The food is honestly my favorite part. The chefs are great and have mastered every single dish. I love how they bring our free garlic bread, and let me tell you. ITS THE BEST BREAD EVER. I always ask for more and they don't charge The food doesn't take too long to arrive, depending on how busy they are. They also have the best shredded cheese at the table along with pepper and salt. I love it so much, they also give huge size portions. The price is unbeatable. They garlic bread they bring out is free, refills for water are free, more bread is free, a box to bring food home is free, and their meals are not expensive at all but are way better than expensive meals. They are about 9-15 dollars per meal. The staff are really really nice. Especially Antonella, the manager. She is my favorite staff ever! She always make sure you are satisfied with the restaurant. K so got off work early and wanted some pizza so I yelped area and found Volare pics of the pizza looked good so I called and placed an order for a 8" volare pizza lady says it would be ready in 20mins I'm 7mins away so I drive over there the building looks old school really looks cool but than I realized no parking I mean at all and than I see that they want you to park the bait n tackle shop parking lot which was pretty full already and this is at 1:15pm lunch time, anyways I park go inside and it's empty no I look around and nothing so i walked into the dining area there a lady eating and I almost walk into the kitchen area and there's the waitress like oh hi I'm like oh I'm here to pick up a pizza she says oh the Volare I said yes she tells the cooks the volare pick up is here she's like it will be a couple of minutes I said ya I know I was around the corner and I came straight here, she than tells me take a seat I told I'll sit down in front I go sit down and here's where the 1 star comes into effect I'm waiting there for like 45mins I finally get up and walk to the back I'm like excuse me she says oh hey gets up get the pizza from on top of the oven so I'm like oh hell no she hands it to me first thing I do is open it and it's cold , as soon as she sees me touch it she say u can eat here have a seat I'm no I ordered to go and this thing is cold, next thing that came out of her mouth was it shouldn't be it was sitting on top of the stove I look at her and I tell ya for a while she say want me to warm it up? Volare tastes like disappointment. I got the cioppino, hoping it would be a rich, flavorful, tomato based stew loaded with seafood. In actuality, I got small pieces of seafood thrown together with water and a sprinkle of tomato sauce. You definitely get what you pay for here. The only reason I gave it 3 stars is because it was pretty basic Italian food and when I try mom and pop shops I hope for a little more authentic taste. If you love cheese like me then you def want to get the cheese bread. It's loaded with mozzarella melted on top. We ordered the fettuccine carbonara, lobster ravioli, and a ham and cheese pizza. The food was good but needed more flavor. I think the fettuccine carbonara would have been amazing with the lobster sauce or maybe the pink sauce. The pizza was super greasy and had very little sauce. I also prefer when Italian places have fresh grated Parmesan and not just the shaker. Once I added some parm, red peppers, and salt the fettuccine was much better. I also added red peppers and parm to the ravioli to flavor it up. The Caesar salad was a good portion and could be shared between 2. It was good but tasted real similar to the Costco Caesar salad mix it was good though for a nice quick cheap dinner. read more

I had heard such great things about this place so I finally had the chance to stop in. I order lasagna which was bubbling hot and cheesy when it the table. I really enjoyed it. My DH had spaghetti with a meatball. I don't think he looked up once after the first bite. He enjoyed his Father's Day meal. The service was excellent our waitress and hostess were both very sweet.
