Wow! Best lunch here! My boyfriend and I came here yesterday post camping with our yorkie. We were looking for a cute and quaint spot that had outdoor seating to have our yorkie join us. VUP was everything! We ordered the lamb burger and fried chicken. Everything was delicious! Union mac and cheese and steak fries also on point. A magical foodie find in blink-and-you'll-miss-it Volcano, CA (Gold Country) well worth the side trip! After reading about it in Sunset we packed up the Mini and decided to make it a long w'end in Gold Country/Sierra foothills and this was a target destination. Run by a hotelier/restauranteur couple who helped pioneer the area into a foodie destination by opening Taste in nearby Plymouth, CA, their second adventure was turning this old space into a combo pub & 4 room inn. Our first sitting was for brunch and it did not disappoint! Me and the good egg split the biscuits n gravy + homestyle potatoes...being from the south I know my way around a scratch biscuit and these gut bombs are A+. We liked it so much that after squeezing in a little hiking & spelunking at Black Chasm Cavern we high-tailed back for a late afternoon lunch consisting of lamb burger, tots w/strawberry ketchup plus root beer float & creme brûlée (thanks to free dessert with yelp check-in!). Everything was mouth-wateringly tasty except for the creme brûlée which was lumpy and just off. One of the best features here is the patio (there's also indoor dining) which has live music on Sun 4-6p. It left so much of an impression on us that we plan to come back and stay at the inn to get the full experience! Had terrific roasted chicken and Brie sandwich with aioli; had with sweet potato fries. The sandwich also had portobello mushroom so was extremely "meaty". The local brews were also great accompaniment for our lunch. Glad we shared the sandwich since it was substantial. read more

Really loved this place! Had Sunday lunch here and had an heirloom tomato salad and my dad had the volcano burger! Great portion sizes but felt it was a little pricey. It's in a very small town so there are not a lot of choices but great service and allowed my dog on the back patio( they even brought him water)! Lots of shade and plenty of street parking read more

We had a family dinner here - four adults and four kids. This place is great for couple and families. The vibe is nice, and they have a bunch of stuff to help the kids stay busy until the food arrives. Potato gnocchi with lamb and the romaine salad were very taste and fresh. Our friends had the union burger and were impressed as well. The cherry on top was the check-in offer - a dessert :) If you're ever at gold country you should definitely stop here for dinner. read more

I ate here yesterday with a friend during a drive from Sacramento. The restaurant is full of Gold Rush charm with seating inside and out. The service was friendly and great. I had one of the best burgers I've ever eaten and my friend said his mac and cheese was his best ever as well. He also enjoyed the Korean tacos and we both liked the fresh Meyer lemonade. The mushroom bruschetta was also calling my name but I feared it would have been too much. I'm sure I was right but I still regret passing it up. This absolutely wonderful hotel has it all, super comfortable and large rooms, a delightful balcony for watching things (including deer) go by, a shady tree covered garden with a tinkling fountain for having breakfast (none better to be had in the area) and a terrific dinner menu with an emphasis on seasonal local ingredients. And, above all, in these days of COVID-19, we are so grateful for their insistence on mask wearing while inside/not eating or drinking and on making sure the rooms are disinfected for their guests. Being seniors, we felt entirely safe here and were glad we chose this spot for our first COVID-19 getaway. Hope to be back soon! read more

Really, really good stuff! Their average right now of 4 1/2 stars is just about perfect I think. The only reason I hesitate to give 5 is that although every thing was very good, I don't think I would go that far out of my way to get it again. Because Volcano is quite a drive for us we decided to order several different things knowing we would be taking home most of it. First, we tried the fig/gorgonzola/prosciutto appetizer with local honey drizzle- Probably my favorite thing I had all night it was delicious!! Then the pork belly with peaches, arugula, and a corn sauce, also very good but maybe not quite as good as the figs. For our main entrée we tried the ribs with potato salad and cole slaw. The ribs were very tasty, but maybe not as tender as I would have liked, and the potato salad was gross in my opinion --side note about potato salad: I think it's one of those foods that's very subjective, to me it was bad, but to someone else maybe it's awesome. End side note.-- the cole slaw was very good! We also shared the Union mac and cheese with broccoli and bacon, definitely delicious! And tried their house made pickle assortment, they were maybe slightly too spicy for me, but I still appreciated the flavor, they were very good. For desert we had the peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream, outstanding! And the chocolate pudding cake with creme fraise, which was good, but not oh-my-god-give-me-more good. The texture was a bit strange, but the flavors were good. The ambiance/decor was beautiful and simple, but not pretentious. And the service was very friendly but maybe a bit slow. Overall I would say to take a day and appreciate the beautiful area, little towns, and wineries, and stop here for dinner, you will enjoy yourself, but don't make a special trip just to eat here. read more

We started with a pear and arugula salad. Served by the most adorable waitress ever! The pears were fresh and grilled. The place is very quaint with a beautiful fireplace in the back room. I ordered the fried chicken. It's very crispy on the small pieces but the larger pieces were very moist on the underside. My companion ordered the special of the night, lamb shanks. Came with a great brown sauce over risotto. Be sure to check in for a free sweet. We will come back!! read more

This is our favorite place and not just because it's nearby. We've had more than a few epic meals with family and friends - outside on their beautiful patio, inside, and lots of pickup in the past few years. Consistently great. We love their staff who is always super friendly, kind, and helpful. Also consistently great and professional. We've never had a disappointing meal there. Among our favorites: Carnitas Fries, Meatloaf, best Hamburger in the area IMO, Fried Chicken, Spicy Chicken Sando... you can't go wrong on salads or deserts either. Great food, great ambiance and service. We went on a Saturday evening and they were jammed, we should have had reservations. We had a to wait 30 minutes, but the wait was enjoyed on their patio with glasses of wine. I had the pork shoulder and my friend had the salmon. Both were delicious. We will be back. read more

I highly recommend staying a few nights at this lovely inn. We stayed during the crush weekend in October. The inn has four rooms located upstairs from the kitchen and restaurant. The inn was built in 1888 but the rooms are very nice with a reasonable sized bathroom. The pub and restaurant is lively in the evening with both locals and tourists having dinner or drinks. But it closes down early enough to get a good nights sleep. The wireless works really well! We had a light lunch when arrived and I highly recommend the mushroom bruschetta. The service was quick and friendly. For guests that are staying at the inn, the room includes a lovely breakfast cooked fresh for you. Heather took care of our breakfasts and the breakfasts were excellent! The restaurant is open at breakfast only for guests staying overnight so you have the dining area pretty much to yourself. We drove up to Amador City for the day and this place was recommended by a shop keeper. Absolutely delicious! Get the mushroom bruschetta. Recently found this place and plan on making a return trip soon. During Civid19 they have out door dining set up and service is excellent. Food was awesome too. We ate at the upper end restaurant. We got the Lamb chops, and daily special that was fish. The food was good, and since we made a reservation we got a table with the view of the volcano. So at dusk you can see the lava light up the volcano. Once the sun sets, you can't see anything due to the reflection of the interior lights on the glass. It's a one of a kind view. Make sure you use the restroom in the restaurant, and not the one in the lobby that the state park visitors use. It's how you would imagine a state park restroom to be like. read more

I have been eating here for years. Last night was just not the same. We had reservations for 6:30- our food came at 7:40! The nightly special was about 1/2 a portion-5 very small shrimp- 5 rings of fried calamari- one small sheet of pasta and a sauce. We were still hungry when we finished! We had an appetizer before hand also! We devoured it in about 5 minutes- it was barely enough for a 5 year old and it was a whopping $28! I also noticed the fried chicken used to be 2 pieces- now it is one. Really disappointed. read more

We gathered over a dozen lively out-of-towners and got a last-minute rough guesstimate reservation at the restaurant (it was a cat herding weekend). The wait staff were so great and capable and friendly and patient (because we were lively - not outta line, but lively and confusing) and so great at their jobs. I can't say enough praise for Victoria, Bailey and Allie. The food was way above expectations, so I'd thank the cook staff by name, but I don't know those names. I have never been here before but yesterday was my sons wedding and we went here for dinner. We had over 20 people. The service was above and beyond my expectations. The food was absolutely delicious!!! I brought in a cake and they were nice enough to bring it out with candles and then cut and serve it! My partner and I spent three evenings in this tiny gold rush town and were fortunate to have picked the Union Inn for our stay. The owner Tracy was incredibly personable and helpful giving us detailed ideas about hikes in the area. Our accommodations were comfortable despite the extreme heat this past week as they adjusted our room temperature and provided ice buckets to keep our beverages cool. The restaurant downstairs was excellent! Tracy's staff members, James, Eric, and Abe, were all efficient and friendly and the food was wonderful. The staff enforced mask-wearing for all guests when not in the outdoor dining patio, which allowed us to feel more comfortable and safe. They also meticulously disinfected each table between diners. We plan to return, hopefully in somewhat cooler weather. Highly recommended! read more

We really enjoyed the staff, the ambiance and the food! We were riding in the area and stopped to walk through the little old mining town. Union Inn has 4 bed and breakfast rooms available which we plan on trying one day. The restaurant has a nice bar and beautiful fireplace that we sat in front of for lunch. Everything on the menu sounded so good, so we changed our mind as each person placed their order, lol. Food was so delicious and portions were very generous. By time we finished we had no room for the delicious sounding deserts. Our group decided we would do some more riding in the area and we came back later in the day to sit outside on their inviting patio to enjoy a cappuccino and delicious homemade peach cobbler.
