I want to give a special and BIG shout out to Olivia who helped us get an order in for our wedding cake. We called in a couple days before our small wedding in Catalina to order a cake (something to cut for tradition). We didn't expect or ask for anything crazy, just naked style with fall florals on top. Olivia was so kind and accommodating that she even sent us images of the cake! Thank goodness she did this because everyone was so preoccupied during dinner that they forgot to take photos! It was an absolutely gorgeous cake and no one believes it was made by Von's. Just perfect and looks like it was made with lots of love. It was a highlight of our wedding for sure! We even saved a couple slices to freeze for our anniversary next year. I've come here many times while visiting the island. It's the only chain and the largest supermarket on the island. It's small but still the same as any other Von's, very well stocked and same prices. We bought small grocery items to take back to the hotel room so that we didn't have to keep going out to eat, which can become expensive. Definitely cheaper to buy your liquor here verses the bar, which is just around the corner. The parking lot is also small and scaled to fit the golf carts and small cars that everyone drives. You can actually walk here from any hotel or from the pier, it's really not so far of a walk. read more

Went to Vons after dinner to buy milk, desert and water because are are staying the weekend here on the island. They were out of 1% milk in the gallon ($4.99) and had only two half gallons ($3.29 each) in 1% so I grabbed them. When I went to the register I explained to the cashier they were out of the gallon and they only had these two half gallons left and if she would honor the price. She said no I have to ring them up separately. I said I understand but you can ring the up at $2.50 each. I asked for a manager and she said she'll ask him. His name was Blas. I saw him shake his head no and she came back and said he said no. Where is the customer service and doing right by the customer? Big deal it was $1.59 difference, but it's the principal. Rude tall and slim lady at the deli/sandwich/rotisserie chicken section. Apparently she is the manager? No wonder why other customers complains were not addressed. I am a woman of color - she treated me as if I could not count how many pieces of chicken I wanted. Also, when I asked if she could cut my sandwich in half, she curtly said to me - wait a moment. Thats it. Then put my sandwich on the counter top and walked away. There was absolutely no way I should be treated like that. Pretty much the only supermarket in Avalon. If you're gonna be staying in Avalon you're probably gonna visit once. Don't forget your club card! With the number of visits we make sure we make sure that place were staying is within walking distance. Make sure you get your Safeway/Von's club card. We got a dozen eggs for $.99 and also a half a gallon ice cream for $.99! They have the what looks like about the same prices, along with sale prices just like any other Vons. Water, snacks, food for your weekend rental, booze..., all this stuff can be had without feeling like you are being ripped off just because you are a boat ride away from Long Beach. The florist department went over and beyond for me yesterday with only a week notice . Olivia and Breeann went beyond their call of duty to help me. I live on the mainland and was having a hard time trying to figure out how I would get flowers made for my brother in laws funeral yesterday and they pulled it off with no problem. Talk about absolutely shitty costumer service. While checking out the rotisserie chicken a female employee pops out and asks if we need help with anything. We tell her no, thank you we just need a moment. As soon as those words rolled out she responded by rolling her eyes at us. While in line we had forgotten the aluminum foil. We asked a male employee if he knew where they were located. He paused before saying NOPE. The man in front of us bursted out in laughter as if it was some big punch line. During checkout he was bagging, no he shoving our groceries without a care into bags. This business provided us with great products but with a shitty experience from some of its employees. This is a awesome place for any needs you might have on the island including a impressive deli and beer/wine selection. Prices here are very reasonable compared to the rest of the island. Parking lot is designed for golf carts. "Cars don't fit". I was pleasantly surprised that they have the latest coastal favorite in San Diego. ( Lagunitas daytime session IPA). I rarely post any reviews but I'm in complete disbelief with the experience of this stores customer service. As a former grocery store employee, I know how hard it can be. However, the cashier Lillian was one of the most disrespectful employee I have ever encountered. Her demeanor was extremely negative. Some of our items fell over, ON ACCIDENT she rolled her eyes at our group and me. We greeted her, which she ignored. We bagged our own items to help the process go faster. Lillian began to throw our items and turned on her belt to make it faster while we were trying to get everything together. The last straw was that we paid cash, she snatched the money out of my fiancés hand. This is a horrible representation of your company. Basically the only big retail grocery store on the island so don't be surprised if you walk in and the lines are long. The lines do tend to move fast. There is also a self checkout option as well. The self checkouts (there are 2) are very sensitive though! So be careful make sure you leave everything on the side until you finish paying. I literally took ONE reusable bag off the side to bag the groceries I bought (my friend was paying for 3 reusable bags and I grabbed one she had already scanned) and the machine halted until a worker came over. The self checkouts are not as sensitive where I am from. It's a smaller store but has all the basic necessities. Prices are about average too not overpriced. Perfect place to come and buy snacks compared to the little shops by the beach. read more

My Vons on Sierra Madre and Colorado in Pasadena. Ventura is the Store Director. Ramona is his assistant. Best wine cellar in town with best sommelier Peter Dills. How often is it that you know every single grocery store employee by name and consider them friends? That's very rare. The selection is huge and even with the shipping challenges this pandemic has caused, they have done their best to keep prices low and food stocked. $5 Fridays is a life saver for many budget minded people. The store is one of the cleanest I've seen. Even on New Years Day with the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade turning on their corner and thousands of tourists, they keep it clean. We've been shopping there for over 11 years. Great selection but rude cashier. He asked if we wanted to enter a phone number for savings. We said no. He said "are you sure you don't want savings?". We explained we are from overseas and don't have US phone numbers and he said "I'm not asking if you have a phone number, I'm asking if you want savings. You don't want savings?" Sarcastically. He continued to insist and we kept saying no. Then he made a big annoyed show of giving us the savings anyway because he is a "nice person". Literally why are we being coerced into entering a phone number when we don't want to. Every other place you go to just moves on when you say no to joining the rewards program. I went here quite a few times on a recent trip to Catalina. Loved the selection (especially the ice cream -- wow!) and the fruit and veg was great too. One day we were looking for some snacks to take on a hike, and the guy at the deli was super helpful, not just for finding food but also for telling us about local trails. What a great store. I remember the old one, but I haven't been to Avalon in a while. This one is close to our rental, a really nice size, chock full of everything we could possibly want. We were able to put together a nice mellow dinner of rotisserie chicken, a few yummy deli salads, cheese and crackers, and dessert. Plus they had a big wine selection. Service was friendly. It's so exciting this store is finally open. Its so nice to not have to visit both cons anymore. It's relative in price to my local pavilions. I love the selection and that more than one cart can be side to side going down the isle. Plus employees are always willing to help. The chips made in The store is awesome and so is the salsa. There is always a line around the fried chicken. Pro tip is to go in the morning to avoid crazy lines. Also check out the clearance area to see what's on sale from the bakery. Huge, great new Vons Store on Avalon and so badly needed. As large as any on mainland. Well stocked with lots of amenities. The staff is friendly, and helpful. Going that extra mile to please. All Covid precautions are followed. Masks, social distancing,. Grocery carts are sanitized after every use and a stand with sanitizers and wipes located at the entry. Wow! I've been visiting the island for years and I used to bring some foodstuffs and drinks over from the mainland. I used to go to the "smaller" Vons to get drinks and snacks, and to the "bigger" one if I wanted rotisserie chicken, lunch meats, veggies, etc. You don't need to bring anything anymore. This new Vons has it all. You can get meat or fish from the butcher, pre-made meals, a variety of freshly made soups, rotisserie chicken....everything! I'm so glad! If I could rate this place with zero stars I would. Today was our first day on the island, and all we needed was some bottle water and baby wipes. Just a quick grab and go because it was late when we left our hotel. Some Mexican lady I believe to be the manager was at the front and as my husband and I walked in she Immediately said " Get out" . I didn't know who she was talking to at first but then realized it was to us. In broken English she kept saying " No Mask, store get out" " No mask, No here" it was late and we had forgotten our masks in the hotel. Be prepared to be rudely berated for being unprepared. My wife and i checked into our hotel and left are bags before heading to town for neccessaties. We walked into Vons, forgetting our masks in the hotel room. Several folks in the store weren't wearing them, so we continued on to grab the few things we needed. We were asked by a passing employee if we had our masks, and replied accordingly without incident. As we were heading to check out, the manager approached us and rudely asked if we had masks. My wife replied "no." Instead of engaging in a converstaion, the manager cut off my wife's resonse and turned to walk away, saying, "im not surprised." I don't know what that means and don't appreciate the inference. As she walked away, my wife jokingly asked if she was going to call the cops. The manager replied, " absolutely." As we were unsure now what to do, we set down our items, and began to leave. We passed the manager, who was now on the phone with someone, and left the store. That was, regardless of the worlds temperament and individual's feelings, the worst customer service we have ever had, anywhere. We refuse to be treated accordingly and will never shop at a Vons again, furthermore we find it overly offensive to the definition of bullying. #45 read more
