From the moment you step inside the restaurant you smell, heat, and see New Orleans. The Cajun music, decor is delightful. The gumbo is very good with two different flavors; chicken - sausage, and seafood. Very authentic. They do not overpower the taste with Cajun seasoning. Very good PoBoys. We stopped in for lunch at this cute little place and enjoyed it so much! The dining room is clean and uncluttered, with nice New Orleans theme art on the walls. So many times, "Cajun" is synonymous with cluttered and hokey. We were greeted promptly and received attentive and friendly service. We had shrimp po' boys, crawfish étouffée, and potato salad. They were all excellent. The best item on the table by far, was the étouffée. The portions were good and nicely priced for lunch. We finished with beignets, which were deliciously warm and covered with powdered sugar. The restrooms were clean and neat, which is a plus. Ohhhhh yeah!!! This place is amazing!! Very helpful staff and some of the best Cajun food north of New Orleans. My wife had the red beans and rice and I had the jambalaya. My wife said it was the best she had ever eaten and that's a big compliment coming from her . The jambalaya was fantastic and will be hard to try the other dishes cause I know I will reorder it. We both ordered the bowls and it was more than a meal, so if your not a big eater I would recommend the cup. The sizes are displayed on the wall by the register so you can see when ordering. My husband is a Louisiana boy and gives place a thumbs up. They make their own light shrimp breading that enhances the flavor if the shrimp platter without a heavy breading. Great catfish platter with many small but thick pieces. Everything tastes really fresh. We dont even use cocktail or tarter sauce with the platters because the food is so good on its own. On FaceBook, anything other than a sterling review of voodoo gumbo can get you banned from one of the Bellevue groups, so I am risking a bit by saying the place is average. :D If you have not been, Voodoo Gumbo is nestled behind the McDonalds on 70S and Old Hickory, next to Sams Kabab Gyro and a few down from Jersey Mikes. The food style is Cajun, which should be obvious from the name. And you find the staples of Cajun cuisine, including Jambalaya, Etouffee and the namesake Gumbo. Service is friendly and fast. Atmosphere is very casual. And the food has the right Cajun flavors. I feel it is a bit too "Americanized" for my tastes, but I went in with someone who has a "wimpy" palette who loved it. As far as Cajun food goes, this one is pretty marginal to me. Tastes fine, but does not completely capture the essence I have experienced in Louisiana. If you can't take the kick, you will likely prefer Voodoo Gumbo from the more authentic experience. I also find it a bit pricey compared to other restaurants in Nashville with similar ingredients. Note that I am talking the non-seafood options, as I developed a sucky shellfish allergy as an adult, so I can no longer have scrumptious shrimp and crawfish. I also think some of their items are a bit overpriced for the quality. I would not call it expensive, just a bit more than what I expect for the food. To be honest, I am surprised at the "this is most authentic Cajun food ever" reviews, as I found it rather meh in comparison. Personally, I would not return, although my friend said he liked it and was glad we took a trip, so different strokes for different folks? I would say it is for those who like the idea of Cajun, but would find Louisiana level Cajun way too hot. read more

I called during my 45 Minute wait at Loveless Cafe to check the wait time here. Guess what? They had no wait so we headed right over. We were not sure if they had table service or if we should order at the counter. They take orders at the counter, give you a number to place on your table, and they bring the food to you. The soft drinks are self serve. Now they do not have biscuits like the Loveless Cafe, but they do have Beignets. Ours came out hot with plenty of Powered Sugar. Also try the fried shrimp. They were lightly battered and delicious as well. Herb (one of the co-owners) came by to check on us, not once, not twice, but three times. Talk about caring about your customer's experience! Absolutely love Voodoo Gumbo! This is the real deal. Even though we no longer live in Bellevue, and are now 100 miles away, every time we will be in Nashville, we make sure to come by. What a great first meal in Nashville! So glad that my boyfriend found this cute little spot a minute away from where we were staying. We stopped in on a cold and rainy day so warm gumbo was a perfect choice. The service was awesome with the girl at the cash register letting us sample the gumbo before ordering. We got the seafood and chicken gumbos and both were great- this place has manufactured a perfect go-to flavor for their recipes. My boyfriend also got a sandwich that he raved about that I cannot remember the name of. Upon finishing our meals the waitress was kind enough to bring us some complimentary beignets and they were heavenly. I had never tried a beignet before but I know that these would fall onto the side of being a good beignet. This place is surprisingly wonderful, it's a small obscure shop in a strip mall. The decor is fun and the booths are comfortable. The music was New Orleans Jazz but not so loud that you couldn't converse. The staff was very attentive. It's worth going in. I had a po'boy and a beignet. I haven't been to New Orleans so I really have no benchmark to authentic Nola cuisine. Voodoo gumbo was delightful introduction to NOLA cuisine. I absolutely enjoyed the vibe of Voodoo- low key (as in a spacious sit down restaurant, neat and clean but nothing fancy) and happy new orleans jazz music livening up the mood. Who doesn't love a place that will make you happy as you walk in? They offer samples of the gumbo and ettouffee. The other great thing about this place is the price point- Very reasonable. I wish I was hungry but we came in for a light snack, so chose to share a half and half- we went with half portion of shrimp poboy and half portion of crawfish ettouffee. And they were good for the price of $11! I can't say how I would have liked it better but according to my husband who visited New Orleans, the flavors were close to the real deal. The shrimp was crunchy and the po-boy generously loaded. The ettouffee didn't skimp on the crawfish, even on half the portion. The flavor was delicious and consistency of the ettouffee was very comforting. Oh and the french bread was soft- I generally don't like it hard, so this was delightfully soft. Now the beignets are huge for the price- 3 large ones for the price of $5. These were delicious...they looked like pillows of sweetness and tasted just like that- perfectly sweet (not too sweet so the sugar was well balanced in my opinion), warm, soft and very comforting! I haven't had alligator before, so I look forward to trying the gator bites sometime. All I can say is if you are in the area and seeking a casual fare, voodoo gumbo is delicious and recommended. If you love fried Nawlins' food you have come to the right place. The seafood is seasoned and fried perfectly and everything is tasty to the max. I always order fried soft shell crab but wish sauté ssc were an option (it's easy to do). Love the potato salad. Served good portions which is always nice.
