I wish we had this place in Virginia. The chicken dinner was perfectly seasoned and crunchy, the fries were awesome, oxtails were flavorful, Mac baked southern style, and the portion/price point still has me stunned. I fed 4 under $100 and all of us took some home. Lastly the service felt like I was at my grandma house. They were super attentive and knew what you needed before you could ask. Had lunch here today. Their sweet tea is really sweet. It was probably the sweetest sweet tea I've ever had. I personally was not a fan, but boyfriend liked it. For lunch, I had the bird burger (a burger with bacon, a fried egg, cheese, and other toppings of your choice, like mayo, lettuce, etc.). Boyfriend had the spare ribs with mac & cheese and mashed potatoes as sides, and it came with cornbread as well. I liked my bird burger. Unfortunately, I was not hungry enough to finish all of it. The fries were okay, but only because I prefer my fries to be thinner. Spare ribs were good, but the mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, and cornbread were even better! Prices were just about right. So it's black history month and my employer does a fantastic thing for us by buying us Lunch from a black owned restaurant EVERY Friday of this month. I think that's awesome. Our first restaurant was V's kitchen. I've heard so many good things about VK, I couldn't wait. You ever heard the seventies hit "Rappers delight"? Well there is a section in that song that describes the food I consumed....."Have you ever went over a friend's house to eat and the food just ain't no good? I mean the macaroni's soggy, the peas are mushed and the chicken tastes like wood...". Well that was my experience. Sorry VK's we probably would have done better at BK's. Traveling through Durham headed back to Charlotte. Nice staff and the place was clean. I had the fried chicken Mac and cheese greens beans and rice with gravy. The fried chicken was ok. The sides were very very salty. I really couldn't finish. Food doesn't seem to be homemade or made in house, but you do get larger portions than other places. read more

They actually do keep to the slogan as a taste of southern is definitely here. The food is hot and not soggy like kfc and such. The Mac and cheese is moist and the beans are not mush like I had first thought. Lunch time is a good time to stop by here because a lot of people sleep on the place do be one. read more

It's really hard to resist good Southern fried chicken and that's what you'll get at V's Kitchen! Located in RTP in the same plaza as Pho 9n9, V's Kitchen seems to do a mix of catering with a limited restaurant menu so it's not that well known. I popped in for a quick lunch and noticed the happy group of eaters in the brightly colored space at V's. Easy enough for me, I go with the fried chicken w sweet potato smush. The food comes out pretty quickly and the fried chicken is great! Light, smooth coating with just a hint of flavor and perfectly fried. Hot but not burning hot with plenty of tender chicken and good crunch. Love the taters too so I would describe V's Kitchen as a casual and convenient Southern eatery. While it's not a place I would probably seek out due to its location, if you live or work in the area, it's definitely worth a visit! read more

I brought about a dozen high school students to V's Kitchen and the staff there handled our large group very well. We had been traveling for more than 12 hours and were in desperate need for a home-cooked style meal, which V's definitely came through on as always! Our food was served hot, fresh, and delicious and in a very timely manner. To add to that, they played great old school R&B and Soul music, so it was a nice vibe! Staff also helped set up tables for us, brought our food to us, and seemed really happy to have our business! Afterwards, I received thank you's from students for bringing them to V's. The kids come from various ethnic backgrounds and some had never had soul food before, so this was a great introduction! This spot has been closed for a while but they just opened back up this week and they are a great option if you're looking for southern comfort food! My first impression was 'meh'. I ordered the fried pork chop with green beans and Mac n cheese. After a few minutes of waiting and after paying in full, I was informed that they were out of this item. I opted for the fish and shrimp as another option and was not charged the difference as a courtesy for my inconvenience. On a positive note, the shrimp batter was very tasty. The Mac n cheese was salty and the green beans soggy with little flavor. I also waited 30 min although there were only a handful of ppl in the restaurant. Shrimp had a surprising kick too it--like it had been marinated in hot sauce before being fried. The green beans seemed like they came straight from a can and were too salty. I left them untouched. Let's put it this way, if I lived in Durham Id eat here at least 1 to 2 times a week! The food was soooo good. From the flavor and temp of the food, to the service, price, and music playing in the the restaurant... everything was 5 star! My family and I wanted a southern cooked meal on our visit to Durham and after a quick Yelp search we found this place. We ordered the fish and shrimp plate which comes with 2 sides and cornbread! They also let us try the sides before we committed (true customer serivce to stand behind their product). It was a hard decision, but the sides we chose were mac and cheese and the green beans. We opted for the cornbread (which was so sweet and moist) and paired the meal with a nice cold sweet tea. My oldest got the 3 piece chix meal (dark) with mac n cheese and the sweet potato fluff, he chose a roll (over the cornbread...his mistake lol, but he seemed to like it...I recommend the cornbread!). He also got a sweet tea (side note: I ordered a side of fries for my little guy --those were great as well). I got the spare ribs with Mac-n-Cheese and sweet chili cabbage for only $10. The ribs were super tender....literally falling off the bone and the sauce was good too! The MnC was ok. Now the cabbageI guess I have never had sweet type cabbage before....but baybeeeeit was soooo good and I added a little bit of my hot sauce which really set it off!!!! Oh, ii also got a Pork Chop sandwich on the side(lol don't judge me....yes ii love to eat) it was seasoned perfectly and tasted so good!!!! Definitely will be going back soon....maybe even today!!!! I had the "Bird Burger" with fries and also ordered a side of "Sweet Chili Cabbage" The burger was nice and juicy but not overly messy, had a great flavor and was nice and hot when it came to the table, the way I like it. The fries were tasty and had a nice crispy outside and fluffy inside - nearly perfect for my tastes (I love a good crispy fry too...) Now the cabbage -- OMG! That was so GOOD!!! My favorite part of the meal that screamed southern cooking. I want the recipe! I would check me back for the cabbage alone (March is coming up may have to get a catering order to go for St Patty's Day to eat along with Corned Beef). One of the best tasting meals overall that I have had eating out for awhile. I'll definitely be back.
