Title: A Man & His Craft (Revisited)... As most of you know... I'm quite finicky about my wardrobe. Granted... It's not to the extent where high end luxury labels appear on each and every line of my monthly AMEX Gold Statement. For me, it's all about the fit. You can always make a $200 suit look like it cost $1,000 with the proper tailoring but you can never make a $1,000 suit look as such without it. Who wants to pay $1,000 bucks to have a window curtain draped over them? Of course, wardrobe fitting holds a pristine level of propriety to Yours Truly. Why so? It is because confidence is segmented into two primary categories... - The cerebral belief and expression of such confidence - The physical appearance and exasperation of such confidence. After all... One can never truly "Unleash the Sexy Beast Within" if they do not look like a "Sexy Beast". This is FACT! After landing a much discounted Michael Kors (Single Breast, Two Button, Double Vented) suit, a dilemma was presented. 1) Return to my previous tailor (situated at a locale not frequented). 2) Ascertain a new tailor within close proximity to my edifice of employment. Careful pondering led to the latter option. After conducting a basic "tailoring and alterations" search via the Yelp, Wagner's Tailoring was discovered. A 30 second brief conversation with the establishment's owner, it was decided that this individual would be charged with the pressing task of tailoring my newly acquired suit based on my fastidious preferences. NOTE: The entrance to Wagner's tailoring is located 10 feet inside the boutique store to the left. Upon entry, I was greeted by the owner himself. Wagner Jumbo (that is his real name) is the owner & proprietor of Wagner's Tailoring. With over 20 year's experience, Mr. Jumbo has been serving the local Financial District patronage with the most complex of alteration requirements. If it can be done, Mr. Jumbo can do it with mastery! After trying on the Michael Kors suit, a brief dialogue was conducted with Wagner. I have very particular rationalities on how I wanted the suit to be tailored... With only a few words of explanation, Wagner possessed a vision of how I wanted the suit to feel / look. The necessities, anything but simple... Shoulder width reduction (approximately 1" on each side), 2.5" reduction to the sides of the mid-torso / underarm area, 1" reduction from the center to lower back, sleeve shortening of 2.5", pant leg hemming of about 2.5", & waist release of approximately 3". It seemed almost unimaginable at the swift precision for which Wagner conducted his markings / pinning. The entire marking / pinning process took all of 60 seconds. Time duration of alterations required = 7 days... Returning to Wagner's one week later, the suit was available for extraction. Trying on the suit revealed the same picturesque stature that was rendered 7 days prior. The suit was fitted & tailored to neatly complement my physical rendering (a perfect V shape from the upper back to lower waist). The shoulders were tapered, matching my exact wide. The waist and core area was narrowed, complementing the slim fit stature of my physique. The uncanny visionary ability of Wagner to determine my expectations of fitting is beyond complacent. Wagner's understanding of prerequisites rendered a flawless product with no negative commentary possibly rendered. I now have my new favorite suit. Given Wagner's level of expertise, a return trip was conducted. After purchasing a new 3/4 coat from BR, a few "modifications" were required... - Sleeve Shortening While Maintaining the Functional Cuff Design - Mid-Torso Reduction of the Left & Right Sides With most sleeve shortening processes, it is with much simplicity to reduce the length via the cuff section of the sleeve. Unfortunately, by doing so, the Functional Cuff Design would then be lost. To maintain the design, the reduction of the sleeve would have to be rendered via the shoulder. As with such processes, the entire length of the sleeve would have to removed, shortened, and reattached to the jacket. Complicated, yes? The Result... Perfection! The coat appears as its original form with no indications of removal. The sleeve length was exact (to where the palm meets the wrist). The torso section of the jacket was tapered, thus producing the much welcoming V shape required. Another perfect presentation by Wagner! Pricing: Very favorable. Wagner's fees are approximately 20% to 25% less than I've paid for the same work but not as highly applauded. A Man & His Craft... If it be his craft, it is conducted with persistence & impeccability! With such expertise, flawless results, and favorable pricing, it would be detrimental to seek any other tailor besides Wagner. I may just buy a few more suits knowing Wagner will be the man tailoring them... read more

Worst tailoring work ever!!! Didn't clean up the residuals and stitches are not in line. They made my pants 10x worse looking than before. Most importantly, they don't care. I have asked them to redo once but still got disappointed. I don't understand how come all these good reviews? They pay a bunch of fake people for reviewing? read more

Ok, I first have to point out that this place is not that easy to find unless you know where you are going. It is like one of those speakeasy places where you have to enter another store to find what you are actually looking for which in my case was someone to tailor my dress. For people who are using Yelp to find this place, you have to actually enter the little touristy boutique and walk through it to find Wagner Tailoring. I think I walked passed the store 5 times before I actually realized I had to enter it and walk through it, but I sure am happy that I did. The staff is very friendly and professional. They are quick with easy alterations, and the pricing is great! I was very happy with the final result. The first time I came back for my dress the length was not what I wanted, but the staff took my feedback very well and the second time around it was exactly what I wanted. My only comment is that it is hard to find unless you know it is there so it would be beneficial to get a sign on the outside. Also note that Wagner Tailoring does not accept credit cards, CASH ONLY! I made the mistake of buying a bridesmaid dress without getting measured. I figured hey, I have been a bridesmaid a bunch of times, and these things run SMALL. But apparently that was not true in this case and I was screwed. Or screwed until I found Wagner Tailoring! The tailor took in the dress but when I came back it was still hanging on me. He told me he would have to take it in from the back which would result in visible stitching. I told him that was fine by me as long as it fit. This might confuse some people but I have never gone to a tailor before. I buy things off the rack and if it doesn't fit precisely right then I deal with it and wear it anyway. I was scared about going to a tailor and worried he would charge me again for having to do more work on the dress. He did not charge me twice. In the end the dress fit perfectly. Sure it had some visible stitching but it was barely noticeable and not something I was conscious of. They had a quick turn around and when I had to get it tailored again the guy was worried the wedding was that weekend and said he could do it in 1 day. I told him the wedding wasn't for another two weeks and picking it up 4 days later would be fine. Phew. Bring cash. Remember your receipt if at all possible. read more

He told me my two dresses would be ready for me to pick up first thing in the morning. I asked please rush its for my brother in law rehearsal dinner the next day after work. Wagner assured me it would be ready first thing early in the morning 9am. I come in the next day after work at 5pm for a quick pick up (figured it would be ready)and he tells me to wait another hour. I see my dress on the counter next to the sewing machine not even started. And the second dress was only cut not even tailored. These were just armholes to fix. So disappointed Wagner cant keep promises. At least be honest or give a girl a call. I was late to rehearsal waiting for the one dress to be completed. I just picked up the other dress bc I couldnt wait anymore even tho it was unfinished. I had already paid in full the day before in good faith. Don't come here. Unless you have 4-5 suits or dress shirts to fix they treat you like crap. They ruined my $300 BCBG dress. Warning avoid this place, Wagner was not even apologetic about his associate accidently making a hole in the brand new dress and could not explain it . Now I have to go to a wedding in a dress that is semi perfect . Third time trying to fix the same dress and he made it worst. It takes him two or three fittings to tailor a dress correctly.Now I have to find another tailor. read more

So I started a job in this city at which suiting up daily may leave a more professional impression. I don't know much about suits or fashion, but knew that good tailoring is the key. I looked around Yelp for some tailors in or near the financial district, with only mixed reviews. After looking on google, I found this guy, who was well reviewed. I think he deserves a shout out on yelp. If you want a skilled hand (and eye) for a reasonable price in the financial district, Wagner is your man. I had 7 or 8 suits bought off the internet tailored here, each for less than $100 each (including pant hemm, waist, jacket sleeve, and waist. Each one came back fitting like a glove. The shop is in sort of a hidden spot (which is maybe why no reviews yet); you have to go to the second floor of this luggage / souvenir dive with plastic curtains for doors. Just walk to the first biz from the SE corner of Broadway and Fulton, and you'll find a great tailor for people like me who are starting their careers and need a reasonable price. He's also been at it for 22 years in the same spot. I think there's something to be said about staying power. read more

Had a winter coat and a suit altered for only $53. Factoring in PATH fares, that still a pretty good deal. I was very impressed with the work on the coats. The pants weren't as good. The hems weren't messed up, but they weren't very good either. The good news is that it is fixable and the better news is that that flaws are not noticeable unless you're really looking at it. As long as I am buying my suits on clearance, I'll bring them here for alterations. But when the day comes when I can afford nice suits at full price from a department store, I won't bring those suits here. read more

I've been coming to this place for years but had to write a review today because of the exceptional service I received. I came in 2 days ago with a dress that really needed a week to finish, but I needed it in 2 days for a show. I must have looked sad when they told me bc he made an exception, got it done in 2 days, and when I tried it on made additional alterations on the spot to get it perfect for me. While the work here has always been impeccable, I had to share this experience, and highly recommend Wagner for any job. They take pride in their work, and appreciate their customers! read more

OK - Let me just say that while the establishment isn't the nicest place, they perform top notch work. I had a super important event, Swedish House Mafia's Black Tie Rave ;-) and he tailored my tux pants to a perfect fit. Seriously amazing. I did not give a perfect 5 as I have only been to him once, but I will be going back to get my suits and jeans tailored. One other note, you truly do get what you pay for, he charged me $25 to get my tux pants tailored. My guy on the LES charges $10. But you can not put a price on having the perfect fit. So impressed with the work they did here. After reading a bunch of yelp reviews on this place, I decided to take my prized leather jacket for some sleeve alterations. The jacket has zippers all the way from the wrist to the elbows so I was worried that getting it tailored would ruin the original look but the sleeves were far too long. When I went back to pick up my jacket, it was not only a perfect fit but the jacket looked like it came from the store that way. Absolute perfection. As for the location, you do have to walk through a touristy looking gift shop to get to this place. It's like the speak-easy of tailors, but well worth the hunt to finding this amazing tailor. read more

Easily the best tailor that I've found in NYC. Having had tailoring services at several dry cleaners in my area, I gave Wagner a shot and haven't looked back. As others have noted, finding this place can be a little tricky. It's in the back of a trinket shop and you'd never know it was there if you weren't paying attention. Until a few months ago, Wagner was located up the stairs on the second level of the same trinket shop but they have since moved to the ground level and in the far back of the shop. The tailoring shop itself is small with a couple of changing rooms with doors that have seen better days. Beyond that, it's a couple of mirrors and then the workspace behind the counter. It's not much to look at, but the work they do is top notch. See, I have a penchant for shredding the crotch region of work pants. I have no idea why this happens but, after about a year of wear, it happens like clockwork. Note that my job isn't to slide down unsanded hand rails or anything like that and, last I checked, my desk chair wasn't upholstered with sand paper. In any case, I have a pricey pair of suit pants that befell this awful fate so I took them to Wagner to see what could be done. They admitted that the fix may not look great and told me they could try but couldn't make any guarantees. I went back, fretful that my nice suit was destined for the garbage. But, all my worrying was for naught as the pants looked phenomenal. The patch work they did is noticeable but only if you really look. Given the extent of the damage, it's a borderline miracle that they could salvage the pants at all. Beyond pant repairs, they also do a great job with shirt alterations. I have broad shoulders so I generally have to buy shirts that are a little large and standard cut. Standard cut is tailored to look like a box with sides that go straight down instead of tapering inward toward the waist. Rather than pinching in the back of the shirt, as I've seen done at dry cleaners, Wagner actually cuts the side seams, takes in the material, then resews the sides. It's the legit way to take in a shirt and just looks and fits far better. While I can't comment on the work they do for women's attire, they are a great place for guys to drop off their gear. The prices are affordable, the staff knowledgeable, and, most importantly, they do great work. Don't hesitate to take your ballinest attire here, it'll be in good hands. read more

Fantastic work at great prices! I had the buttons on my new winter coat restitched because they were poorly sewed on and I was only charged $2/button. I also got minor holes in various blouses/pants stitched up and it ran me $3-$5 for each item. Everything came back exactly like I wanted. What I really like about Mr. Wagner is that he's really upfront and honest. If something can't be done he will tell you exactly why. I can also expect the repairs to be done in a timely manner. Note: You have to go through a souvenir shop to get to this place so it seems kinda shady, but don't be fooled! Also, it's cash only so make sure you have some on hand. read more

Wow, did I find a gem! Like the other reviews have said, it's hard to find this place, but once you walk in you'll be glad you did. I needed to get some jeans altered (I'm 4'11") so pretty much all pants need to be altered for me. They had them done within days, I thought it would be a week at least, but it was literally 3 days. It also cost $9, what a fantastic deal!!! The last time I had pants altered it cost $25. This place is no frills, but my pants were great and I was so happy to have them done correctly and quickly! The one star rating is for a terrible experience I had where I was overcharged for work that was not done / not done well. I left 2 dresses to be altered (one hemmed, and the other taken in a bit). The hem job was fine ($10), the one to be taken in was $15. The one that had to be taken in didn't look right so I asked them to undo the alteration and I was told that I would not be charged the $15. I had to pick up both dresses later. The place is so disorganized that they charged me not just the $25 but also another $5 to undo it and my dress still didn't look right! So effectively, I paid $30 for $10 worth of work and $20 for a dress that looked worse than before I brought it in. I would HIGHLY recommend that this place get more organized or you, as the customer clarify, IN WRITING, what needs to get done and at what price. After that experience, I am looking to find another tailor. Recommendations? read more

Just as other reviewers have mentioned, you have to enter a different shop (I don't recall what its called but they sell tourist kind of stuff) to get to Wagner's, but it is a convenient location nonetheless because its right off an exit from the new Fulton station. The tailoring is top notch, very affordable and everyone is friendly. I had bought an expensive winter coat online and had mistakenly followed the advice of others to size up. It ended up being far to big and was sold out by the time I received it, and I liked it too much to send it back. I was pretty sure I was going to end up spending almost what I spent on the coat to get it tailored (every part needed to be taken in), but I did some researching for a new tailor and found Wagner, who did it for a very affordable price and impeccably. Pros: - Relatively inexpensive compared to other tailor's - Good for basic single hem adjustments Cons: - Slow turnaround. Missed the promised finish date twice for my order. - Quality of work is not good enough for major operations on clothing. For example, I had a suit jacket sleeves reset (shortened at the shoulder to preserve functional button holes). Length was fine, but the sleeve was reattached very poorly to the jacket without allowing any moving room in the lower shoulder area. It just became tight in the wrong places! (I know this is hard to describe) Now i need to find some place to fix it! - Disorganized -- I did not get the original hangers and garment bag back that I dropped off with my clothing Overall if you have something simple like shortening a pair of jeans or taking in a shirt, this is your place. Amazing! I brought a dress in that was ripped to shreds at the bottom and also had a rip going up 8 inches in the front. They charged me only $25 (I've been charged $40+ for hems in NYC and higher for silk/dresses w layers). When I got it back I was shocked at how new the dress looked! I just brought in a jumpsuit that needed a hem, a ripped faux leather skirt, and a skirt that needs a new zipper and the price quote was only $40 total. After losing over 30 lbs. and no longer able to fit into any of my suits that I'm required to wear in court, I needed a tailor who is not only skilled but reasonably priced. I had about 15 suits that were falling down every time I stood up and I'm way too old to be walking down the street showing my boxers. I found Wagner on Yelp and started with the first suit to see how it worked out for me. His prices are more than reasonable although cash only but that was not a problem. So now, after all 15 suits, 2 or 3 newly purchased one's a few coats, some tailoring for my 17 yr old daughter and too many pairs of pants and jeans to remember, I can highly recommend Wagner. In fact, I have taken clothes to him and needed his opinion about whether tailoring would be an option and he gives and honest opinion of it would not work for the items. He'll redo or correct his work if something is not right and in my experience that is rare. read more

Suit Alteration I came here for a suit alteration that needed substantial work: sleeves shortened, chest taken in, waist taken in, pants hemmed, and the leg taken in for a slim fit. Mr. Wagner greeted me and promptly started chalking the suit up; I was in and out in 10 minutes. Now, no offense to Mr. Wagner, but the guy isn't sartorially gifted, so don't expect him to give you advice on what looks best; he'll tell you the basics (e.g. three different types of breaks you can have), but have in mind what you want done to the suit, and he can certainly do it. I picked up my suit six days later, and the price was very reasonable. read more

I have been going here for almost 3 years and I live on the UWS. CN: They did an excellent job taking the waist down of a wool pea coat for only $35. I could not be happier. Bring cash, he doesn't take credit. Full story is below... 1. I have a 10" drop (difference between chest size and waist size). 2. I don't like spending a lot of money. This unique combination of traits leads to a closet of clothes that don't fit very well. To be frank, I didn't realize my clothes didn't fit well until I moved to New York. (In Chicago, it is more acceptable to have a shirt that resembles a tent.) I realized that my J Crew pea coat (which i bought at the outlet) fits well in my chest/shoulders, but not at the waist. After doing quite a bit of research online and hearing stories of how tailors would not alter heavy coats (or do so at a price greater than the cost of the coat), I decided to drop by Wagner's. Thanks to the thorough review done by other yelpers, I quickly found his shop (go into the gift shop and up the stairs on your left). Before I committed to having it altered, I asked him for the price... He asked for $35! I agreed right away, and after a few pinches, pins, and a couple chalk lines, I was out the door. To be perfectly frank, I was worried on whether or not the coat would fit correctly after such a quick consultation. He was literally done in 30 seconds. I just picked up my coat, the fit is perfect, the work is of high quality, and I couldn't be more pleased. I basically got a custom coat for an extra $35. I've had both cut-out dresses, bridesmaids dresses, and a linen blazer tailored here, and I couldn't even tell (except for the perfect fit!) that they were tailored. I just had my first experience here and it was a great one. I recently bought a new suit and the jacket had a good fit, but the pants were too large at the waist and thighs. I took them here, and in the fitting you could really tell Wagner knows what he's doing. Had the pants marked and me out the door in no time. The pants were ready in a week and when I went to pick them up, I tried them on and the fit is now perfect. A lot of the reviewers are saying they're pricy-- this particular work, which included both the alteration and the hems was $30. I personally didn't think this was outrageous, and they're work is clearly high quality, so the price felt right to me. I will definitely continue to use this tailor in the future and would 100% recommend to others! read more
