Wagner Tailoring is AMAZING! I recently bought a leather jacket that fit except the arms were too short (which is a common problem for me). I needed to have a tailor that I could trust with my new investment to get the job done. I had visited a leather alteration shop near me but in the end I decided to not take the chance because they didn't seem to know how to fix the jacket. I looked on yelp for help and found chun I's review and thought maybe I try Wagner Tailoring. I decided to call the owner first to ask him some questions regarding leather alterations. I was surprised by his demeanor and willingness to answer all of my questions. I took the trek to downtown Manhattan and once I met the owner I knew he would be able to fix my jacket. The owner was professional, courteous, and of course knowledgeable about repairing leather. I dropped my jacket off on a Thursday (the day before Christmas Eve) and was told to pick it up on Monday. Based on all the positive reviews, i decided to give this place a shot. I had a few dresses and jeans that i've been meaning to have tailored. I finally had the time last week to drop my stuff off. I had 2 dresses (1 with lining) hemmed a few inches shorter and Wagner Tailoring did a great job! It was $22 total for both dresses...so pretty good! I also had 2 pairs of jeans hemmed ($9 each)...i didn't need the original hem attached so maybe that's why it was so cheap. But i think with the original hem, it's still only $15..which is pretty standard. It took them only 3 days for all the aformentioned items to be tailored! Ehh... I join a few others in a somewhat critical review of this place. It's definitely not the best tailor I've been to, and not the upstairs, hidden-gem kind of a tailor I'm still hoping to find in NYC (I'm new to the city). I'm not completely sure whether it was the proprietor of the place who helped me, but either way my review stands for the service I got at this place. Service-wise, things were fine. They originally told me it was going to be quite a while (close to two weeks, I think) just to take my shirt in. To their credit, they were willing to bump the job up to an earlier date for me at no extra charge. More than the service, it was the quality of work that disappointed me about Wagner Tailoring. Certainly the fit was good. I like my shirts slim and form-fitting and they walked me through my options (darts or no darts) for adjusting my piece. In the end, it did come out fitting nicely. Of greater concern was the quality of the workmanship. The stitching is visible along the seam of the sleeve in a few points, and they didn't bother to line up the pattern of the fabric. It wasn't serious enough that I was willing to wait longer for them to re-do things, but it was serious enough for me to try someplace else before returning here. I had a large amount of alterations to be done on summer suits and jackets. These were all high-quality vintage items from Brooks Brothers, J. Press, etc., and several needed the body taken in on the jackets, something that a bad tailor could easily get seriously wrong. A friend recommended Wagner, and I wasn't disappointed in the least. The turnaround time was a week for 9 pieces, which is quite fast (there was a delay of one day, but I got a timely call on the original date to let me know I could pick everything up the next day). The workmanship was very good - for the most part, I can't even tell anything was altered. One detail that stood out to me was that on my older jackets, the sleeves have two buttons about an inch apart. Other tailors have resewn these buttons kissing when altering sleeves (without consulting me), but Wagner kept the buttons spaced as they were when they came in. That kind of attention to detail matters when working on high-quality clothing. The prices were very fair, especially for NYC, and I feel that it was well worth it. The only (small) issue was that one altered pair of trousers wasn't cuffed, which I had asked for - however, I decided I didn't need the cuffs after all (the trousers were altered to the correct length), and I'm sure they would have corrected this for me if I'd bothered to point it out. But if you're bringing in a lot of items at once, it might be worth checking everything over carefully before you leave just in case something got missed. Wagner is very skilled with Sportcoats/suit alterations and his prices are very fair. He's completed major surgery on a number of men's blazers I own and will keep making adjustments until you get the perfect fit. Dress shirt alterations leave little to be desired however. I had brought in a dress shirt to be taken in for a simple alteration (slim down & add darts) but unfortunately I was not satisfied with the results. Darting was not well executed and very obvious on the back of the shirt. You can tell very easily that the shirt was altered. Not an indication of quality work. Additionally, due to the increasing number of patrons, Wagner needs a better system to keep track of his work orders. Make sure you thoroughly inspect your garment before leaving to make sure everything you asked for was completed. I've had to bring garments back a number of times because something wasn't done. In summary, Wagner is very good with certain articles of clothing. I would avoid taking dress shirts here to be aIltered, mine ended up looking like a blouse. read more

Terrible for taking in dresses. The line / shape of the dresses are ruined and the seams don't lie flat. The hem they sewed on one dress started coming out within one hour of wearing it. I tried them because they are cheaper than my go-to tailor, but you don't save any money if you have to pay to have the work re-done elsewhere. Cash only. read more

I bought a very high end Italian leather jacket at a sample sale that was many sizes too big and had a boxy, shapeless frame. In one business day and for an astonishing price of $40, they took the jacket in (by many inches) and created a curvy, flattering silhouette. I stumbled upon the place simply because I work downtown but have now replaced them as my go-to tailor. Wagner's is quality for half the price. The leather jacket has been the most expensive quote that I have received at $40 (all tailors charge extra for leather). Other equally as challenging jacket alterations have been in the range of $25-30. Great bunge of gentlemen, patient, detailed-oriented; however I think the place just isnt operating well enough to handle all the businesses that are flowing in because of his work. As long as you keep up with the work he promised, you will get your clothes back with satisfaction. I strongly recommend that you call two days before you pick up your clothes. Cheap ($10 for pant hem) but sloppy job hemming slightly tapered dress pants. They made cuts/slits in the inside hem (fabric above the foldline) fabric to spread the cuff to complete the hem (because tapered end folded back in has a smaller circumference then the upper part of the pant) as opposed to stitching from the foldline out diagonally to the serged area. Rookie mistake or lazy shortcut. Regardless, there shouldn't be mistakes for a very basic hem job. In retrospect I'd rather pay a few more bucks to get it done right at another place. read more

Solid little alteration shop right next to Fulton St. Station. I had two thick flannel shirts taken in ($15 each) and they did a wonderful job. I went back and had two pairs of slacks hemmed up ($8 each). No compliants. Friendly service for that area, don't be fooled by the building they're in. read more

I just got my suits back from Wagner's and couldn't be happier. It was a four day turn around for two suits. Both suits had the jacket and pants waists taken in, the pants hemmed, and the legs tailored. One suit also was switched from a single pleat to flat front. This is the first time I've ever been motivated to write a Yelp Review. Usually when service is bad, you shrug it off, and give the place another chance, or just let it go, but I found the experience here so frustrating and unpleasant that I have to write a review. I dropped off a dress and requested it be ready by a certain day and time 5 business days later for an event. Wagner said it would be ready. Not only was it not ready, but he was incredibly rude and completely unapologetic when I brought this up. I have no problem if an item can't be ready on time, but if so, Wagner should just be honest and say so, allowing you take it elsewhere. Instead he falsely says it can be ready, when it ends up being not, and does not even apologize or remember his original promise in the first place. Honestly, I get the vibe here that customers who have repeatedly dropped off multiple expensive suits to be tailored get good treatment, while newer customers who bring one item do not. Honoring loyal customers is great, but new customers should be treated in a way that will make them interested in returning. Sure, the tailoring is OK, but rather overpriced, and certainly not worth the rude experience that going here is. Tailoring is a personal business. You want to trust that your clothes and valuable pieces are in good hands, with a person that cares about making them look their best for you. Are you looking for that friendly tailor that cares about customers, remembers items, honors business promises, and does not treat you like a number? Well, don't go looking for it here. read more

I went to Wagner for the first time last week after being handed a business card on the street. I needed a zipper fixed on a dress (the zipper went up the side of the dress, and came undone by itself when zipped to the top.) I dropped off the dress on a Wednesday morning and was able to pick it up on Friday afternoon- quick service! It was cash only, no biggie- I went to the nearest ATM to pay the guy. Extremely disappointed. Dropped off an item for alteration in a rush. Went back at 6PM and everyone was already gone. It was for a trip I leave in the morning for. So I went back with a rush job, walked in with the dress I bought that Thursday morning that I wanted to wear for a wedding on Sunday. I needed the dress by the end of Friday. I let the main guy know, I need it by Friday, end of day, "if you can't finish it tell me know please." He said he'd get it done, he just needed until at least 6pm. That was fine. I needed him to shorten both shoulder straps and take in the bust. The dress was ready a couple hours early on Friday. I didn't try it on while I was there. When I put it on later I thought it hadn't been taken in...I think he may have been a little conservative on taking it in b/c he definitely did work on it - he didn't replace the little bra strap holder ribbons/snaps that the dress had in the shoulders. But regardless, the dress fit better than when I bought it and I was able to wear it to the wedding. In a pinch, he came through relatively well and I think it was only like 20 bucks. Unbelievable! I urgently needed to fix my wedding dress (had less than 48h to have it done). I went to see Mr. Wagner and: Yes! He did it on time, and the best part: the price is very reasonable and the quality of his work is absolutely perfect (there is no way to notice my dress was altered). In addition, I also had left him a skirt to shorten, and I told him there was no urgency to pick it up. However, because I told him I lived far way from there, he fixed the skirt as fast as he fixed the dress. I pick up both items at the same day, then, I did not have to go there two separated times.This place deserves more than five stars. Highly recommended! read more

Had a belt taken in for a formal event out of the country. Told them to take off the length of the buckle when I was getting fitted, but noticed no markings were made on the belt so figured he would just remember. Just picked up the belt and it was so tight that I could barely breath. It's not a belt with any adjustment possible which is why I needed to get it tailored, but it is elastic so the fact that I couldn't breathe shows how tight it was. The guys at the desk were rude and first said that there was not much they could do even though I told them it was probably prob due to them not making markings when measuring. After some back and forth, they said I didn't have to pay after I was adamant that it wasn't what I had asked for originally - That's the only reason I am giving them more than one star. Only tried this place because it is close to my office, but going back to my previous tailor after this experience. read more

I brought in a few suits and pants the have re-tailored as I lost significant weight since I purchased them. I was concerned on price and quality of the work, but Wagner put me at ease. His prices are definitely reasonable, to me well worth the work he had done for me. I brought in 2 suits, where they were originally quite boxy and the pants were super baggy. I was a 36 waist originally and slimmed down to a 32. 44 chest and down to a 40 now. He pulled in the jacket, slimmed the sleeves. slimmed the pants all the way through and got it done very quickly and made it comfortable. I've had a few custom suits made while I was in Asia, which took me about 2 trips to get the pants fitting correctly (slim look). To my surprise, Wagner was able to get it done correctly in 1 shot. They were slimmed down but not too tight that I feel like i'm in tights. I defintiely will come back here again and probably skip the custom suit and get an off the rack to be tailored by Wagner, he gets that fit I want! read more

The appearance/location of the business made me reluctant to try it, but looks can be deceiving. Great tailoring for fair prices. I have taken over a dozen shirts, pants, and eventually they earned my trust to tailor my suits too. I am very happy with their work. Some comments below mention that they are not timely. I have on occasion received my clothes a day or two later than expected, but i'd MUCH prefer that they don't rush their work and ruin my clothes. I always get everything within a week anyway, so this doesn't bother me at all. In fact - i think this demonstrates how careful they are with their work, and that quality trumps quantity. (1 star below seems a bit punitive because you needed a dress tailored in 12 hours.) read more

A excellent tailor with real good prices- especially for Manhattan. Everything fits and is finished on time. Meanwhile i've been there 6 times and i was always satisfied with the work. It's a bit hidden in the back of a souvenir-shop and it doesn't look very inviting, but it's always full of people and for me that's the best sign for a good tailor. read more

I have been there 3 times now and so far I can say that this won"t be the place to go for me anymore. They are all nice and polite but the thing is, or better said I feel like that they don"t take time for their customers. The first time I needed some pants tailored was OK. I tried to describe my problem and within seconds he interrupted me, drew his lines on the pants and told me the pick-up date. I was a bit surprised but trusted him. It took a long time and the result was OK, nothing special and in my opinion not the exact result I wanted to have. Of course - I wasn't able to state my exact issue I had with my pants. I gave it another try with another pair of pants. Same here and even worse. He drew his lines again and told me the pick-up date instead of taking some time and listen to me and maybe clarify what's going to happen with my pants when doing this and that. Result: Pants are unable to wear anymore and getting the thing undone didn't work out even after the third time I gave it to him - mission impossible I guess. However, they are friendly, inexpensive and at least for one of my pants the result was okay. Therefore 2 stars. But I will definitely watch out for a new tailor which can be more expensive but instead really handles a customers problem. read more
