This is a roadside diner with a lot of nostalgia pieces related to Route 66. The zucchini fritters were some of the best I've ever had, big pieces, lightly breaded and fried to a golden crisp, served with ranch dressing. Hubs loved his chicken fried steak and I had the chicken salad with a very chunky blue cheese dressing. Iced teas were very large and service was prompt. My son loves the burgers and fries here but the service is so-so at best. They always seat us at the first table on the left which is so noisy we can't hear each other talk because it's next to the kitchen and the servers are yelling out gossip about their weekends. I ordered the sweet potato fries for $5.99. It was a tiny portion and they were so overcooked they were a nasty brown color and no longer tasted even remotely like sweet potatoes. At first sight of advertisement off the freeway you would think just another "get off the freeway and get a quick meal" and if you think that way, then just go to McDonald's or Jack in the Box. But no, I had to spend the night in Needles and I wanted to give Wagon Wheel a try for dinner take out. I looked at the menu and pictures on yelp and wow, it looks as if whatever you want, they will custom make it for you. But I wanted to go by pictures and I saw the meatloaf sandwich looked good and my wife was surprised to see they had albacore tuna melt. So that's what we ordered. I had to use Google to find the Restaurant and found a bright yellow building with loads of parking plus parking for semis and trailers and cars with travel trailers. I was amazed that there was only 1 Cook and one waitress doing all the orders. When I paid my bill I noticed someone on my left sitting down, he started to wave and I started to talk but found he was one of the locals, ha, caught me by surprise, his name is Pappy. Ok, the service was fast and the cooking was fast, at first thought I was thinking quantity not quality... wrong.. the meals were excellent, the experience was excellent with great customer service. My vacation completed with this restaurant being the best visit of all eateries. So if passing by, you truly need to stop by. read more

We were on the road and hungry and decided to try The Wagon Wheel. We weren't disappointed. I had the open-faced pot roast sandwich which was excellent. The gravy was very good. And the beef melted in my mouth. My wife had the pork chops, which she thought were ok, but the apple sauce that came with them was homemade and extremely tasty. For a place in the middle of nowhere, this is on our list to stop for a meal. The moving mannequin at the entrance is startling, no matter how many times I've passed him. Our first time (we've been twice so far) made our whole trip! We happened upon all-you-can-eat fish and chips night. Their battered Alaskan cod was juicy and thick, worth the extra calories of fried goodness. I'd like their tartar sauce recipe (or know what bottle it came out of) - it's zippy! The server was friendly and eager to help. The decor will keep you busy just looking around while waiting for the food to arrive, which is faster than we expected. Don't let the exterior fool you because inside is air conditioned and cozy for a break in your travels. PS to the ladies, use the restroom near the entrance instead of at the back of the restaurant if you want to use the sink in private (the back one shares with the dudes). read more

We stopped in for breakfast and had two different skillets - both were really delicious. Neither needed salt or pepper, which is a rarity for this type of establishment. The restaurant was really cool with a lot of Route 66 memorabilia. The service is where they lose a star. One of the orders they delivered to the table was completely wrong and had to be sent back. My son was halfway done with his by the time my correct order came out. Also, we weren't offered any beverage refills, nor were we offered a discount for the error. I chalk it all up to just a busy day for them, though, and would absolutely go back if I were ever in the area again. No wonder it's been open since 1955! We stumbled upon it because Route 66 Pizza wasn't open when it said they were. The Pot Roast Melt was unbelievable! I ordered it with au jus, and it came with horseradish on the side which was very good also. The potato salad was better than my homemade, so I had to get some extra 'to go'. A humble diner for your road trip. In Needles, CA it might as well also be your Historical Route 66 road trip. It's at this exit you'd take and head north and through the nearby border towards Bullhead City, AZ, so might as well stop in and take in a meal. Outside, there's plenty of parking, even some for RVs and truckers - but none on this visit today. Inside and before the dining area, is a gift shop full of assorted Needles goodies like t-shirts, books, and toys. We sat at the counter, but there is plenty of booth seating great for big traveling groups. Be sure to take in the charm of his Route 66 history. Old motor oil cans, license plates, street signs - there's all kinds of antiques everywhere. There's even photos of celebs who've come through - from what I remember, Zack Efron and some dude from Game of Thrones. The menu is huge with all kinds of breakfasts, sandwiches, steaks, and more. Today I went with the Pot Roast Skillet ($12.49) and it really hit the spot. It tasted like a homestyle Thanksgiving meal - pot roast mixed together with mashed potatoes, gravy, and mushrooms. Wagon Wheel's been open since the late seventies, and further back in the fifties it was a restaurant under a different owner. With the historic Route 66 in mind, this meal makes me think of all the wonder the rest of the route may hold. read more

Hubby and I stopped in for lunch due to the review score. I won't be returning. I ordered the pot roast open faced sandwich. It had too much black pepper in it to the point my mouth was burning. After our waiter dropped off our food, we never saw him again, otherwise i would have sent the food back. He never refilled my small glass of iced tea or water, never came back to ask how our food was. We never saw him again until he dropped off the check. Hubby had a hamburger that was very dry. I don't know how on earth this restuarant has such high reviews. The food was terrible. I had a stomach ache all the way back to So Cal from the heavy use of black pepper.
