Cute spot, good food, and STELLAR service. We were passing through the area on the last leg of a week long road trip and stopped in on a whim. Our waiter (Matt? Sorry! It's been a couple weeks and I can't be sure) was an absolute sweetheart. Beyond friendly and an expert waiter & team member. His interactions with other guests and team members were top notch. We were on the road and hungry and decided to try The Wagon Wheel. We weren't disappointed. I had the open-faced pot roast sandwich which was excellent. The gravy was very good. And the beef melted in my mouth. My wife had the pork chops, which she thought were ok, but the apple sauce that came with them was homemade and extremely tasty. We didn't have room for pie, but it looked great. If we are ever in Needles again, we will definitely stop at The Wagon Wheel Restaurant. read more

A humble diner for your road trip. In Needles, CA it might as well also be your Historical Route 66 road trip. It's at this exit you'd take and head north and through the nearby border towards Bullhead City, AZ, so might as well stop in and take in a meal. Outside, there's plenty of parking, even some for RVs and truckers - but none on this visit today. Inside and before the dining area, is a gift shop full of assorted Needles goodies like t-shirts, books, and toys. We sat at the counter, but there is plenty of booth seating great for big traveling groups. Be sure to take in the charm of his Route 66 history. Old motor oil cans, license plates, street signs - there's all kinds of antiques everywhere. There's even photos of celebs who've come through - from what I remember, Zack Efron and some dude from Game of Thrones. The menu is huge with all kinds of breakfasts, sandwiches, steaks, and more. Today I went with the Pot Roast Skillet ($12.49) and it really hit the spot. It tasted like a homestyle Thanksgiving meal - pot roast mixed together with mashed potatoes, gravy, and mushrooms. Wagon Wheel's been open since the late seventies, and further back in the fifties it was a restaurant under a different owner. With the historic Route 66 in mind, this meal makes me think of all the wonder the rest of the route may hold. read more

We stopped in for breakfast and had two different skillets - both were really delicious. Neither needed salt or pepper, which is a rarity for this type of establishment. The restaurant was really cool with a lot of Route 66 memorabilia. The service is where they lose a star. One of the orders they delivered to the table was completely wrong and had to be sent back. My son was halfway done with his by the time my correct order came out. Also, we weren't offered any beverage refills, nor were we offered a discount for the error. I chalk it all up to just a busy day for them, though, and would absolutely go back if I were ever in the area again. But I won't be, because it was 110 degrees there today, so no thank you. read more

No wonder it's been open since 1955! We stumbled upon it because Route 66 Pizza wasn't open when it said they were. The Pot Roast Melt was unbelievable! I ordered it with au jus, and it came with horseradish on the side which was very good also. The potato salad was better than my homemade, so I had to get some extra 'to go'. Even the brand name sodas from the fountain were mixed to perfection. Our waitress was Zandra and she was wonderful. Great slice of Americana. Good food, pleasantly presented. Lots of regulars along with many I-40 travelers. My "go to" place.

Went here for dinner on 12-4-21 after a long drive up from San Diego hitting Route 66 locations. Ordered the Hamburger Steak meal. It came with mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans and a biscuit. Food was delicious and arrived promptly. Service was good and the prices are fair. My meal was about $14.50. The signage outside needs some work but the place was hopping busy, so that was a good sign. read more

If you want to take a tip trip in a time machine this is the place. Straight out of an old West that I remember as a kid but but that is a long time ago we're talking fifties and sixties The staff is very attentive prompt and loves to serve. They'll get you anything you want and Hey if you want a meal like was cooked at home in the sixties and fifties you got it it's coming up here the burrito was excellent the baked potato skins were wonderful wonderful and the baked potato was great and we were happy. What more can you say simple easy and lots of junk to look at. Funky Diner on Route 66. The menu is loaded with choices. This is definitely a meat-lover's Paradise! I had a delicious veggie scramble with a biscuit and gravy instead of toast. The scramble was excellent, complete with home frie potatoes underneath the eggs and veggies. The biscuit was super moist and fresh. Nice spot to stop off for a hearty meal. read more

Friendly and fast service. Homemade ranch dressing is great with the fresh salad. We didn't care for the green beans at all being a bit soggy and tough. Excellent mashed potatoes and gravy. I had a fried chicken breast done perfectly. Next time I would have the gravy on the side as the chicken and potatoes were covered and a little to much for me. Excellent biscuits. Best burgers ever! And fine service provided by Jennifer. I had the California burger with homemade potato salad. It was amazing! The potato salad was just how my mom makes it. You MUST stop by and enjoy the food and service! OMG, definitely one of the best breakfast menus on the planet, regular lunch/ dinner menu looked very appetizing too! There were lots of customers in there when we stopped by. We accidently found Wagon wheel on our roadtrip to Sedona, ( visiting from Honolulu Hawaii). Portion size was great for this 6', 210 lb guy. What a stroke of luck to come across wagon wheel! Pancakes with blueberries were amazing, biscuits and gravy delicious. Our server Valerie was extremely friendly, attentive and kept checking on us. The whole staff there looked very happy and even the Manager/ owner(??) Was out and about checking on the customers. The service was a total 5 ... friendly, amazing and outstanding (and, of course, my usual "as it should be") ... the food, on the other hand, had some real challenges ... grits should NOT taste like treated tap water - huge fail ... easy enough to make with milk or even powdered milk ... the chicken fried steak was tenderized properly, breaded properly and then fried in rancid grease - didn't anyone smell it in the kitchen ... or maybe just CLEAN THE PLACE ... and the final insult was the biscuit under the star of the place - awesome gravy ... actually it should be referred to as the "HOCKEY PUCK" sitting under that awesome gravy was nearly criminal. For a legendary and historic place on Route 66 it should be sooooo much better .. you better get your act together before I make my next road trip. read more

The country was probably littered with places like this in the heyday of Route 66 and this one still has all the character you imagine and then some. The food and service both exceeded expectations by a mile. This will definitely become a road trip staple. Had the meatloaf skillet, subbed on the brown gravy instead of BBQ sauce. This is the type of place that reminds me of my childhood. Old western type decor w/ bar seating and great food. I'm still working my way through the menu and this what I've discovered so far. All their sandwiches are bomb! My extra well fries are always cooked to perfection. Pot roast and meatloaf skillet are my go to dinners. Breakfast is decent...only thing is like most places the country fried potatoes are just okay. IMO not many places know how to season their country fried papas. Service is always friendly and quick. Just a FYI...portions aren't huge. It's enough to get you full and not take leftovers. That's not a complaint. Just dropping 411. read more

A cut above usual diner fare. Recommended as a great place & it beats fast food. Traveling solo sat at the counter since there were only large tables available & several unbussed tables. The staff acted like I'd broken some law! Ordered a house specialty, chicken fried steak. It arrived slathered in gravy that was okay, not worthy of being called a house specialty. Meat was tough & need a steak knife. Pastey mashed potatoes, more gravy. The staff was so busy delivering food some seemed to care less about the customers. Was grateful 2 other servers got me checked out after I'd already waited right in front of roxy for 10 minutes to have her deliver my check. Will try breakfast in the morning & hopefully a better experience. read more

Yuck is the easiest way to explain this restaurant. Both omelettes were chewy. The toast was stale and saturated with butter that didn't even help soften it up. The kids spaghetti was gross. It was like one big lump of noodles stuck together and covered in sauce. I recommend driving by and going for fast food. read more

Oh my goodness! Beyond expectations!!! We live just across the river in AZ and kept wanting to go here. We are so happy we did. Nestled on Route 66, once you enter there's a cute little gift shop to the left. To the right is the restaurant and we were quickly greeted and sat down. Right away our drink order was taken and they came quickly, then we ordered and appetizer "loaded tots" so yummy! My husband got a chicken bacon ranch and it was huge, chicken was cooked perfect and they added all the fixings he wanted. I ordered the pot roast skillet and oh my goodness it was delicious! Good perfect and so tender with perfectly toasted toast on the side. Seriously the perfect comfort food! The decor was so fun, definitely a lot to look at. We loved it! Hubby and I stopped in for lunch due to the review score. I won't be returning. I ordered the pot roast open faced sandwich. It had too much black pepper in it to the point my mouth was burning. After our waiter dropped off our food, we never saw him again, otherwise i would have sent the food back. He never refilled my small glass of iced tea or water, never came back to ask how our food was. We never saw him again until he dropped off the check. Hubby had a hamburger that was very dry. I don't know how on earth this restuarant has such high reviews. The food was terrible. I had a stomach ache all the way back to So Cal from the heavy use of black pepper.
