Man, I really wanted to love this place. They sublease an outdoor space that's attached to another business, and dish out Indian style bbq where they'll take heavily marinated meats, most skewered on long sword-lookin' things and legitimately grilled over hard wood coals. I love this style of eating and have been blessed with having to try many cultures versions over the years, as our area is nicely diverse. I've had the Afghan, Mexican, Persian and Turkish versions of this, and love them all even though they are all different enough from each other. Now this version seemed so promising as I arrived as 1) there were a good amount of people eating/waiting around, so that indicated 'fandom'; 2) the grill was in full action up front as I could just smell that authentic yet ethnic bbq; 3) free hot dispenser where you can pour yourself a super tiny cup of rich yet spicy and aromatic Chai...delicious! But upon ordering and trying things right when I got home, it was a mixed bag for me. 2 Item Grill Combo ($24/4*) You can pick any 2 meats from their selection and this will include some naan, rice, pickled onions and that green sauce. It is a good amount of food and is easily split-able or eaten as 2 portions. So don't let the pricing deter you. Chicken Tikka Kabobs (4*) They use nice large chunks of chicken breast. Bright yellow/orange from the marinade and they char it nice and good. It is not bone dry like some breast meat can, but it definitely wasn't juicy either. A few Afghan places in town make a nice juicy one, which is to be commended. Here they don't have that secret/skill down...yet? I'd get this again tho here, the flavor is pretty good and bold. Lamb Seekh Kabob (3.5*) This is ground lamb kabob done in this cultures spicing profile. It is pretty bold and can be quite spicy. I liked the meatiness but the spicing was borderline too strong for me, as I was almost not being able to taste the lamb flavor as much. Which is actually my main gripe with Indian and Thai Food, I just feel that there is too much layering that I often lose sight/taste of the main part of the dish. I know there are people who love spicy things but for me there is a definite line between effective and superfluous. The rice is a well made basmati with noticable flecks of spice. The naan is proper here, bold pockets of char with a nice chew. Their green chutney is very flavorful full of garlic, herbs and maybe green chilis. It is super similar to the green chutneys I see in Afghan places...more the same than different. Lamb Chops ($9/3*) For this price you got 2 decent sized lamb chops. Not thick chops and it will be quite well done. Again heavily marinated but this time not to my advantage. I think the chops are thin enough that this type of marinade blows the delicate qualities of the lamb out of the water. My first few bites were so salty that I had to instantly eat it with naan or rice to mute the intensity. I saved the other piece for the next day and it wasn't so intense then. But I still got more marinade flavor than I did lamb. I wouldn't get this again. Garlic Naan ($5/5*) Just like the regular naan but with another dimension of chunks of garlic stuck to the outside. They make this about as good as any Indian place in this town and they even throw in a small cup of a smooth coconut curry sauce to dip in. I could actually make a meal out of this. Vegetable Curry ($14/3.5*) Really good sauce/curry, well balanced and doesn't blow your palate out of the water. But for the price I think they could have either added more veggies or a more unique blend of veggies. It was just super tiny broccoli, thin zucchini coins, carrots and peppers. And it was like 75% sauce to 25% veggies. If this were heartier veggies I'd easily give it 4+ stars. So not sure if I'm compelled to come back, I may. The smell was amazing! The big mushrooms and chicken chunks, curry-ish delicious. The lamb chops were mouth watering. Umami in each bite as all the spices hit your tongue. I've never been to India but could only imagine it can't be better than this? The restaurant sits next to a pizza place and there is lots of outdoor seating and parking. The naan, just like when I was in Bangalore last November. The Pani Puri was very similar to what I had in Mumbai a few years ago. The peanut masala (roasted peanuts served on a papadum was just like - well, like nothing I have had before. So head over there and bring a couple friends and a good appetite so you can try several things. But keep it quiet because the place is small - basically about 5 picnic tables to eat at. And they are only open from 6pm to 9pm Wed to Sat, so there is usually a small line. SO DON"T TELL ANYONE. What? They have 116 Yelp reviews? They were highlighted in a big article in the SF Chron last year? Well crap, there goes the secret. I might as well tell you more then. We've been there 4 times. Last time for 4 people (two are large eaters) we got the 1/2 Big Boy Platter, and extra chicken skewer, the peanut masala, Masala Mac, Butter Chicken, and 2 orders on Naan. We had leftovers to take home. They had an indoor dining area set up when were there a few weeks ago but it had just been painted and had a strong paint small, so we couldn't sit in there. And if you are waiting a while (see prior note) you may not have a place to sit because the tables are taken. Overall we will go back when we are in the east bay and have the time. They have always been friendly and accommodating to us. And yes, the prices are a little high, but it is the Bay Area and inflation sucks. So I guess it doesn't seem high to me. It's great to know there's such a fabulous new restaurant in this area, which is in need of some great eats! The space is inviting, with ample indoor and outdoor seating. Sit indoors for the chilly days or outdoors for our beautiful Bay Area weather. The outdoor area is cute and covered - I'm really looking forward to coming back when the weather is nicer. Some good tips to note: they offer catering including some substitutions, like chicken kofta (instead of lamb). Their chai is hot and flavorful, not too creamy. The lassi is perfection - I highly recommend trying this! Everything I've tried here, from the kebabs, kofta, butter chicken, masala, shrimp, vegetarian options, etc. - it is all delicious. I have yet to find anything on their menu that I wouldn't recommend. Along with the classic Indian comfort foods, you'll find some creative menu options as well, like the masala mac'n cheese. It's decadence surprised with it's full-bodied flavor and creamy, buttery goodness. The naan is perfection and a must get with your order. Service is impeccable. During one of my visits, I had the pleasure of meeting Chef Ron. He's obviously passionate about his consumption creations, even referring to his cooking style, as being "without borders." As you walk up, you see the BBQ pits, full of delicious meats you can smell from the parking lot. Interestingly enough, their vegetarian options were just as good or even better than the meat dishes. Do get the chicken leg. Perfectly soft, moist and flavorful. Mixed grill was a delicious, with the mushrooms being a fantastic surprise. Hands down my favorite was the chole. Spicy and DELICIOUS, perhaps one of the BEST chole dishes I have had anywhere. Mix with some naan and you will go home happy. The couple sitting next to us got the Big Boy Platter. The lamb meats are tender and don't have the strong lamb odor which I don't like lamb sometimes. The combo also came with chai tea. The food is great as well as the presentation.
