I read the reviews on the place and they were hit or miss. My grandpa used to go there and I thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt. I am a local chef so I read reviews on places before I try them and I should have listened to the bad reviews. This place is way over priced, especially for the food they are serving. I have not one nice thing to say about the food, service or cost. I will not go back. Looking for chinese in Burien go to Happy Garden, they care and the food is fair. This is the worst Chinese food I've ever eaten in my life. I mean I created a yelp account to just to post a review of this spot. I did a take out of the Kung Pao chicken. Once I got home the chicken was completely dry as if someone nuked it in a microwave. I called them and they said that they would happily substitute it for the Kung Pao prawns at no charge. Well I went back and got the prawns, hoping it would be better. It wasn't and was equally bad as the chicken. Will never return and I hope others see this review and don't make the impulse decision in not driving a bit further and picking a better spot. I will give it to them that they do know service recovery and I appreciated them substituting my dish. However, after a couple a bites, the prawns went in the trash too. #BADChineseFood read more

my husband and I have been coming here a lot lately on friday nights but never again, the blonde waitress was slow and rude, the sweet and sour pork chunks tasted too much like vinegar, and the meat was nothing but breaded grissle, then I asked her if she could heat up my coffee and she bitched about it and said because I put cream in it and "don't put cream in it", EXCUXE ME but I'll put cream in my coffee if I want!, then I went home the next morning I was charged twice! What happened to this place???? It used to be so good. The egg rolls were awful, and full of celery. There really wasn't any meat in them. The fried rice tasted old, like it wasn't cooked today. Soup looked like Campbell's chicken noodle, sprinkled with a few greens onions and watered down. The Mongolian beef was so sweet and 80% onions, hardly any meat. There was not 1 piece of shrimp in the Special Fried Rice. BBQ pork tasted really old. Alerting King County Health! I think I just paid an outlandish price for a bunch of old food!!!! Horrible! Wah Kue Café is a South Seattle FAVORITE for many, in fact we have taken many visitors from out of state to Wah Kue's, & they want to go back every time they come to town. The prices are slightly higher than some other local Chinese restaurants, however the friendly servers (Frankie is our favorite - very personable) and the food is very good & plentiful, we ALWAYS have enough for dinner the next night. (that is if we can resist the "late night raid" of the refrigerator) Our favorite is the #3 we also love their Mongolian Beef ! Well those are some pretty bad reviews! But as the 3rd generation of my family (and my kids being the 4th) of eating here..I say its some of the best around. I moved pretty far away from Burien and have tried MANY chinese restaurants searching for the same yummy food I get at Wah Kues. With NO luck! I mean...sweet and sour chicken isn't supposed to look like it has cherry pie filling on it, right?? It seems Wah Kues is the only place who knows this! We always get BBQ pork, pork fried rice and sweet and sour chicken. They always bring my kids noodle soup at no charge and tons of cookies and candy after. And there are no creepy guys there. They have all worked there since it opened and they are all nice. I love the parents who run the front. Always nice to us and remember us even though now we only make it in once or twice a year. I would recommend to anyone. Some dishes are better than others. Oh well. I love it. :) But yes, I do agree that it is overpriced. read more

Over the years I've introduced many people to Wah Kue, some friends, some not The nots became friends. It's the nature of this restaurant. When you leave, there's no way humanly possible to stay mad, and they forgot why they were upset in the first place. My own Children would continually ask when can we Wah Kue again?? Haven't been here for probably 15 years and was so glad I went back. You have to order the combination plate for the best value. Yes, the prices are a little high but we had four meals out of an order for two. Love the sweet and sour spareribs...no florescent orange sweet and sour sauce here. It is a luscious sauce. We love this old school Chinese American food! Huge egg rolls wrapped in actual egg, and the sweet and sour is the best I have ever had, not gooey sticky, just sweet and yummy! Oh and the wonton soup is quite flavorful and nice, served family style. The sign outside is my favorite, "serving take out since 1948". I am hoping they get that order out soon, because it will probably be cold when it gets there. read more

Have been going here about 5 years now, almost every weekend. I always get the sweet and sour chicken and broccoli and beef. The sweet and sour chicken is THE BEST I've ever had! The batter is always crispy and doesn't have that scary "don't know where the batter ends and the chicken begins" texture. Broccoli is also always perfectly cooked. I don't know if it's authentic or whatever, but it tastes great, and most importantly, always tastes the same. The servers are friendly and also very consistent. For people who enjoy good old fashioned American Chinese this is the place! There has been a sharp shift over the years in Chinese food. If you loved the taste from the 50's and 60's you are in the right place. It is always busy which doesn't say much for other places in the area. Service is always great and the food fresh. Do you love gelatinous egg drop soup? You won't find that icky stuff here. You will get homemade chicken broth filled with fresh greens, chicken and generous eggs. I LOVE this place. It's great Americanized Chinese food. You're not going to find good authentic-ish Chinese outside of the ID. It's pricey, so we only get it for special occasions. Such a treat! I'm a big fan of their fried rice and egg foo young. It can be a bit greasy, but it's so good you can't stop. I have eaten at Wah Kues for over twenty years. I feel like the quality of the food and service has dropped drasticly. The food was amazing & the service was GREAT back in the day. You left feeling full,happy & overall satisfied. I keep giving them chances because I have had such consistant service for so many years. It's been over a year now & I am totally not going back for a very long time. If you offer one person tea you offer everyone tea. The food quality has good days & has bad days more bad days. The customer service has come down right RUDE! This use to be a family oriented friendly welcoming restaurant. They've raised there prices which I think are on the pricey side for the quality & service they are dishing out. Makes me sad I'm gonna miss them read more

I'm sorry to have to rate a restaurant I grew up going to so low but fact of the matter is, the food has changed. I'll say the main stay Chow Mien is still very good but that was it. Sweet sour pork and chicken were terrible. The egg rolls were burnt and tasted awful. I hear their under new management but they must have changed chefs as well. Have been going to Wah Kue Café since 1985 and enjoyed it most of the time. About 3 years food quality went down while prices climbed. New owners took over in 1/2015. We went there on Saturday 5-21 and the interior has had some improvements, kitchen redone and the food is great - just like it was years ago. Food prices have been reduced about 30% and quality is great. Serving portions are the same. Our waiter Tim has been there forever and always knows what we order. Will be going back. read more

I see some reviewers complain that some of the food is greasy...DUH! It's chinese food! Fried deliciousness! The best things to order here to make your visit pleasant: The best sweet and sour chicken ever. Not that crappy red sauce you get everywhere else. NO! A thick dark sauce with pineapples that is a little like heaven. There is never enough to bring home, it is always gone. Order two. Fried rice is excellent. The eggrolls are big and weird, but tasty. The rest of the menu is good but these are the standouts and the sweet and sour will make you come back for more. If you believe that generic red sauce they slop into a container at Panda Express is edible, don't order the sweet and sour here, you don't deserve it! Service is good, sometimes a little slow, and Chinese! I love you Wah Kues. read more

I have been coming to this place with my family since 1968. The food is still very good and very American Chinese, which I LOVE. Always very good. We order the number 3. I have never had a bad meal. Everyone is very nice. Ask for Tim, he is the best waiter. They still have the same wall paper and lacquered fish hanging, and red vinyl upholstered booths, but all in all it is great, no matter what anyone else says. Very Very Very good. read more

My family has been going here since we moved to Washington over 20 years ago and though we have moved over an hour away making our visits a little bit less frequent it was still always worth the drive every few weeks. They have always been a bit pricey but worth the cost for the quality and amount of food for as with most Chinese meals you tend to get a lot. I have been eating at Wah Kue for over 40 years. This restaurant used to be great. The last few times I ate here has been terible. The food taste old like it have been re-heated. The almond chicken taste burn't. This pork fried rice is just the worst I have had in a long time. The BBQ pork was very dry. The chow mein just had no flavor. I used to go to Wah Kue's at least once a week when I was a kid and I hadn't been there in awhile and decided to go back lets just say that it wasn't what I remembered as a kid. The prices have sky rocketed, the pork fried rice isn't the same but close, and the sweet and sour chicken was on the dry side. For the prices they charge for the food you would think they would put some of the money aside to do some remodeling. The carpet should be removed by a hazmat team and burned on the spot, the inside could use a good scrubbing and the exterior needs a good coat of paint. I grew up eating here as a kid and it used to be great. Decided to treat my wife to some great take out food and trip down memory lane..OMG it was expensive and awful. I ordered the combo meal for two. It had sweet and sour mystery meat that was greasy and like rubber and the sauce was greasy brown and tastless. There was something that was like celery with glue sauce, some kind of brown dough ball with brown sauce and nasty fried rice. My family has been going here since it openned. I cannot express how much I love this place. We live on the Eastside, but the majority of my family is still in this area. If i had to choose the last place to eat, it would be here. Their food is so much better than all of the other chinese spots across seattle. I first started going to this restaurant when I was in elementary school (Boulevard Park) and I'm in my 60's now. My mom and I ate there every other Friday night when mom got her paycheck. It was the highlight of our week. I have such fond memories of the food, atmosphere, and fellowship with my mom, who has now passed on. My husband's family also enjoyed the Wah Kue Cafe. We moved to Idaho in 1999 and haven't been back to the cafe. But, if it's anything like it used to be, the food is great. Just now getting around to writing this review, went in a couple sundays ago with my sister, her husband two kids and my fiancé. We got there about 745pm. I've been here several times and never had an issue by the way. Anyway I don't know if they were just rushing to get the food done and us out of there even though they closed at 9. The sweet and sour chicken was hard like it was sitting there all day in a warmer or something. The almond chicken was chewy, the fried Rice and bbq pork were the only good part about the meal. The total for all of us was 105.00 and that wasn't too bad. The worst part was as we were leaving the waiter who has been there forever (can't remember his name but he's the one that's usually there with the glasses) went the clear the table as we were standing by the door he said really loud "oh wow nothing for me! Jeeze!" I looked at him with a dirty look because we left a $20.00 dollar tip then he seen it and said "oh here it is thank you" seriously! You sir are as rude as sh*t I don't care how long you've worked there but you are the reason I will never be back! And I was a regular. read more

I don't even know where to begin. I guess I'll start off by saying this place is so over priced it's not even funny! I think the reason I feel so compelled to write a review is because of the prices. If they were charging $5 dollars a plate it wouldn't be so bad, although I could argue that even $5 is too much. But, the fact they are charging $14 for a plate of horrible food, I find it completely offensive. The chow mein was all celery, had crunchy noodles, and no flavor at all. The BBQ pork and sesame seeds was an appetizer size plate with a few slices of grey, dry thinly sliced cold pork ($14). The fried prawns were not prawns, but tiny shrimp covered in thick greasy batter. We couldn't finish the meal. We ate about 1/4 of the meal, paid the bill, and went to get Vietnamese food. I have never had such a bad food experience. The decor was very old school, which wouldn't have bothered me if the food had been decent, sometimes the old hole in walls have the best food. Having eaten at Wah Kue's for over 50 years I am so disappointed in the food now. It used to be THE place to eat Chinese food. This evening we ordered the #1 for 3. This consisted of Chicken chow main, Sweet & sour pork (which we change to chicken) fried rice and egg rolls and chicken noodle soup. For the cost of $55.00. Well......when we picked it up the first question was "did you bring your own contained for the soup?" WHAT??? Since when do you bring your own container? If this is the new policy then why not mention this when you order. I called and asked why the sweet & sour came in one contained and the chicken in another. Was told "you have to mix it yourself". I miss the "old days" when it was "the place to go" Now unforturnately I would not recommend it to anyone. The food is still good, but not for the price they are asking. We will not be back and this breaks my heart. The way Wah Kue is now being run I am sure Louie is NOT resting in peace. read more
