I am a reg customer there had a experience that should not happened..a man came in into the restaurant with a big dog sat in the middle of the aisle, I'm where everybody was sitting.i had a elderly man . the dog was right next to us breathing I always go there never seen this happened & why employees let him in with this dog. this was not a service dog & the place is very small to have a dog that size in. Wah May has been slinging chow mein and other old school Chinese goodies since 1961 from what looks like a former residence. Surprisingly, no bar. Unsurprisingly, plenty of combination plates. Chow Mein Sandwich: They have several choices for this regional specialty, which can also be had as a chop suey sandwich. Proteins include chicken, beef, mushroom, pork strip, and even shrimp or scallop. I went with chicken. What arrived was a humongous assemblage of thick-cut celery, tender chicken strips, and onions, with crunchy flat noodles interspersed and a thin, dark brown gravy (neither sweet nor salty) underneath. The bun was basically a garnish, so this demanded fork and knife eating. I think of it as a crunchier Chinese version of a hot turkey sandwich, with the bun the least important element but what makes it unique. As chow mein, good flavor and good texture, coming in well above average to near-elite. Shrimp and Lobster Sauce (on a combo): Five shrimp, ever so slightly overdone but serviceable, buried in a faintly sweet sauce with a more potent dark black bean base, with a few swirls of egg white. Scallions on top were more than a garnish, providing a savory counterpoint to the sweetness. Well above average. Egg Roll (on the combo): I have to admit, there are times I'm not fully certain on whether an egg roll filling is celery, cabbage, or a mix. This was NOT one of those times. The celery brigade can rejoice, as this one goes well past "celery forward" and onto "celery in your face," and I'm talking more in your face than an Elaine Benes Christmas card. Dark green, thick chunks, all with some crunch, and fully loaded. Baby shrimp and pork can also be found lurking, but this is all about the dominant celery. The wrapper brought a bit of greasiness (though within tolerance) but a strong, pleasant flavor as well. This unique egg roll bordering on subgum-in-a-shell is an absolute must-try, and I liked it to an extent, but wouldn't want it regularly. It's an acquired taste, so it's tough to score: overall, probably average, but a really fascinating average. Pork Fried Rice: A little dry in spots but dark of color with flavor to match and an acceptable amount of pork, onion, and bean sprouts. Above average. Very enjoyable meal, good food, different food, and a place I'm eager to revisit. Fairhaven is just over the bridge from New Bedford and boasts some stunning works of architecture in its town hall, Millicent Library, and Unitarian Memorial Church, all right around the corner from Wah May and not to be missed if you're into beautiful historical buildings. read more

I have had nothing but good experiences here for the past decade whether ordering to go or sitting in. I have def sat in more often! I was a little shocked by the price of sesame chicken, but honestly don't do take out Chinese often and they seem on par with every other spot nearby (upon doing my research). My order had a ton of chicken! I was pleased! I do wish it came with more rice tho. I ended up making more at home because there was so much chicken i got 3 meals out of it. Everyone inside is always super nice. They are speedy with their pickup orders too which i so appreciated. They def run an efficient business! It's cute on the outside too! read more

I have been a customer of Way Mays since they opened in the 60's, so that's a long time. I love it there, good food, great prices and friendly staff. The staff goes out of their way to accomodate customers..,Annie has been there almost since the opening and she still does a good job. I love an old timey restaurant of any sort and this has those well kept 60s/70s vibes. Good Americanized Chinese food at a good price and prompt attentive staff. We split some scallion pancakes. My husband got a lunch combo plate. They had a list of American diner favorites (burgers, fried chicken and pork chops, etc) along with the chinese food. and cheap bottles of beer. Review 2023 Wah May Restaurant has been a long time New Year's Eve takeout dinner! Went in today and placed our yearly huge order and the girl at the desk was very friendly and helpful. They always get it right and we never have had problems! Delicious and yummy, Wah May Restaurant will always be our traditional New Years dinner Edit 2025 I ordered a combo plate of sweet and sour chicken and pork fried rice for lunch for takeout. It was very quick but there was a literal small ROCK in the fried rice, plus the rice had no flavor and was so dry. The sweet and sour chicken was underwhelming and not what I was expecting. Our server was fine. The food was more expensive than the last time I was there. What upset me was the fact that another server complained about a customer's bad tip, right on the restaurant floor. Working for the public can be a thankless job, but to denigrate a customer in from of all the others dining there? Not cool and not someplace I will go to again. And for all this server knows, that person was just as poor and hardworking as the server and could only afford a small tip. read more

Ok this is a tougher review. If you get food for pickup this place is a 3 star if you go to eat in the restaurant it's a 4. The inconsistency can be frustrating because food should be the same whether you eat there or at home. I gave a 4 star for what the food is when you eat there. First time and last time getting food from this place. Every single item was greasy and drowned in watery brown sauce that has no flavor. Crab Rangoons don't event taste like they are crab Rangoons. Pretty nice restaurant off the start, looking from the exterior it does not look like it is popular, but once we got inside, the place was absolutely packed. I am pretty sure they would get more customers but the place is super small, only 15 booths. When we entered the restaurant it didn't really take us a long time to be seated, about 2 minutes. It did take a very long time to be served just to get our drinks though, probably like 10 minutes just to be greeted, but I am not impatient, so I did not really care about that, knowing that they have only 2 servers working it since it is a pretty small restaurant. Once the waitress came, she apologized for the wait, which was very nice of her. She was also extremely nice when serving us, very polite lady. I ordered a number 26, General Tso Chicken with fried rice and crab Rangoons, with water, my fellows got some tea, due to yelp saying that the tea was very good. We also got a side order of crab Rangoons as well. The drinks did come relatively fast, and the side order did come fast as well. The crab Rangoons were pretty good, but not better than other Chinese restaurants I have been to. Very sweet, good crunch, and very hot, which I like. They also came with duck sauce, which was nice. The entrees came very fast as well, they also gave us some broccoli as well. The chicken was very crispy, very wonderful soft fried rice, and very crispy crab Rangoons. The food was pretty good. Not as good as Happy Garden Plymouth but we've been there twice. I don't like the lo mein and the chicken wings are kind of bland but the chicken fingers shrimp boneless ribs fried rice chow fun noodles all excellent. Service was good as well read more

The worst General Tsao I've ever had. Not sure if there is a new cook or just a bad night. Don't think I will return for a while. After Young China retired on Acushnet Avenue and China Lantern collapsed, Wah Mays got all my business, everything was just right! It's all about the booths with the food. The drive over the NB/F Bridge is five miles one way! Well the plates got smaller, the food was still great. Covid hit and then I noticed some inconsistencies on takeout. Every menu I got was soon outpaced when I'd call in. I know times are tough, unfortunately I remember a Wah Mays that not only had the best food around but reasonably priced, and you'd get the nicest dinner rolls with butter. We were spoiled! So after years of getting take out here tonight I was utterly dissappointed. We spent 135.00 and everything was overcooked,all if it! teriyaki chicken and beef had no teriyaki on them, rice was so dark it was almost black and the lo mein was not lo mein noodles, more like thin spaghetti. My aunt always says, "Boston is the king of american Chinese food." An hour south is still too far away. Overall, pretty mediocre. You judge a place like this by its fried rice and it was definitely the best thing we had...it was pretty good. The boneless spare ribs, however, were so fatty, I couldn't even think about trying more than one bite :( Orange chicken was ok and the beef teriyaki was a little weird. The thing that killed this place was the odor. We parked around back and the smell from the dumpster was retched....not a good start. Once you walk in, you realize that maybe you should have ordered out. The decor is post 70's cheap and you cant escape a peculiar funk. Love the Coconut Shrimp, mmmm. So much so 1st time I had it, came back the next day and ordered it again. Every time I come here it is what I order. Sometimes they do not have the free buns on Sundays (kind of ridiculous), they usually hand them out - as you order your meal. Every time I walk into this place, feel like I am in Pulp Fiction or Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (in a good way); being brought into a parallel universe, which is why I like going there so much. Always consistent. Friendly staff. They've been in business for a long time, which says a lot. There's nothing fancy or gimmicky about it, it's what you'd expect with no surprises.
