Crispy Chengdu Chicken - so good!!!
    Tanya S.

This was a last minute stop as we weren't sure where we were headed. After joining Xiaohongshu, I really wanted to experience authentic Chinese Cuisine. Shu definitely hit the target! we had a lovely server that even recognized that we had joined the Xiaohongshu app. She was nice enough to answer questions that we had. It is definitely has a date night ambiance. If you have never been to Shu, I highly recommend that you stop by early. Then go to Cha Papi afterwards for dessert!

Pork with lotus soup. It's very light, refreshing, and the pork surprised me with its tenderness. Compliments to the cook

Upon walking in, I can smell the different aromas of the dishes that were brought out to the diners that arrived before us. Then lighting created a dim atmosphere which made the whole environment very calming. Service was phenomenal, the waiter got all the orders correctly, the man bringing out the dishes was very respectful to the customers. The waiter ensured we have everything we need. The soup had a refreshing taste to it and I completely wasn't expecting the pork ribs to be so tender. The scallion pancake also impressed me. I love the golden crispness of it all. It was my first time at this location. I will definitely be returning .

    Vegetarian kung pao
    Jen R.

Vegan reviewer here! This review is gonna be short and sweet. I'm visiting from out of town and wanted some Chinese food and saw they had a vegetarian section. I've been here twice in two days and honestly had some of the best Schezuan dishes I've ever had. The vegetarian Napa pork is my favorite and a must have if you like garlic and chili oil. Their shredded potatoes and vegetarian kung pao is delicious as well and all served with rice. They have quick service, the restaurant is clean, and prices are fair. For my 3 dishes after tax it came out to $48 and some change before tip. I had plenty of left overs. Don't sleep on this restaurant!

Great Sichuan food in a small Asian plaza. Next to Cha Papi, A Dong Asian Supermarket, and some other spots, Shu is a great spot for some authentic, spicy, delicious food. We were a party of seven and we ordered a host of appetizers and entrees to share, including dumplings, scallion pancakes, dan dan noodles, sea bass, pork belly, beef with chilis, and tofu in this amazing sauce. A lazy Susan in the middle of the table made it easy to access and share everything amongst the table. Wide variety in spice levels for dishes too, as we had people in the group on the spectrum of no spice to "I love when it hurts so good." We had plenty of water as well as beer and wine to wash it all down. Beer and wine selection was simple, but got the job done. There were Asian beers available in cans and bottles, including Sapporro. They also had three white and three red wines to choose from. You definitely come here for the food, of course. The service was excellent and you just could not beat the price. The smorgasbord pictured does not capture all eaten as quite a few dishes we polished off to make room for more. To fully stuff 7 hungry adults who had 2 drinks each, it was about $320! A rare and valuable find! Highly recommend this spot especially if you are looking to catch up with your favorite foodie friends.

Food is ok. Their place is going to significantly improve if the owner or manager or whatever know that although she is the owner, no one would like to sit in a space where she keeps chatting and nagging very loudly with one customer she knows for like half an hour. I was like if you two wanna have a party or something, the restaurant probably is not a good place because this drives away other customers

    trio of dim sum
    Kevin D.

A very solid dim sum restaurant, with solid flavors but the proteins are a little light On the hunt for a new restaurant. Girlfriend found this place, so we made the trek and gave this place a try. The menu is fairly extensive, contains lots of items to try. We decided to keep to the staples: A scallion pancake, some dumplings, some noodles, and a crispy duck entree. The scallion pancake was more cracker like, a little greasy but good onion flavor, the dumplings had a good amount of filling, but I could only really get the pork and peanut flavor out of the 7. The crispy duck was a little fatty, but was cooked well. Surprisingly, lots of the food was missing spice. I usually associate Sichuan food to be hot, but it's barely spiced. That being typed though, the dishes were tasty. Nothing was bad, but everything was heavy in grease which made the dishes land harder on the stomachs. It's a nice place with nice servers, the food was good, but not the greatest overall. For the area, it's really good food though.

Great food and great ambiance. This authentic Chinese restaurant is located in west Hartford and offers a wide variety of Chinese cuisine. Staff was very friendly and took our orders as we got in. Any items we were not sure about they did not hesitate to explain it to us. For appetizer our table had steamed vegetable dumplings, scallion pancakes, sweet and sour pork ribs, corn pie and fried pork dumplings . All were very delicious. For dinner there was a wide variety of orders placed which all came with a bowl Of white rice. I had the crispy fry chicken with seeet and sour sauce and white rice which was delicious. The chicken sauce was not too sweet and the rice was very fluffy. Other meals my family had included steam fish, beef and fried tofu, crispy chicken with spicy garlic sauce and stir fried shredded potatoes. Everyone enjoyed their meal.

This is such a cute place!!!! Gives a very authentic Asian ambiance. The staff is extremely friendly and the service was great. No specific server for your table - everyone helps everyone. The food was well done. Great flavors and executed well. The only negative was that while everything we ordered was supposed to be "spicy" nothing was actually spicy. It was well flavored nothing was bland by any means. But definitely not "spicy" - which was slightly disappointing. Overall, a great little place for some more authentic Asian flavors - versus you typical Chinese-American place. Would definitely recommend stopping by if you are in the location. (Do not judge this place by it's location).

Chengdu Dumplings in hot garlic sauce - YUM!
    L M.

Did someone say dumplings?! The chengdu dumplings with the spicy garlic sauce are so yum! And don't let them take away the extra sauce -- it's good on everything! I'd go back just for that. (Side note: they sell the garlic sauce in bottles too!) The scallion pancake appetizer was good. I also liked the flavor and crunchy texture of the green beans, though they were a bit on the salty side. And I wish the lo mein had more veggies and meat, but it was good. The service was great!

    Pepper fish slices
    Ma S.

Many good restaurants go down hill over the years but Shu seems to be the opposite, getting even better with age. My latest visit was totally a 5 star worthy lunch. The Fuqifeipian was perfection, & the pepper fish slices was worth 6 out of 5 stars. It's not on the main menu, rather, it's part of lunch special not available on weekends. However, they are willing to make it dinner portion on Sat. during my visit. It tastes very similar to the fish slices black bean sauce, my fav. Chinese dish in the entire state of CT, thats's only available at Mohegan Sun. Too bad they could not offer this in black bean sauce but they more than made up to it by putting in twice the amount of fish.

Sidewalks were torn up but the place is hard to find with lack of signage. We were able to get seated right away, and looked through their digital menu. We got a smattering of dishes, wontons and dumplings, a sandwich and a ramen. Food came out in a reasonable wait time. We took pics and dug in. The 7 flavor dumpling was the star of the show. Light and thin dumpling wrapper, savory sweet sauce, plenty of filling. The pork dumplings were good, but the wrapper was thicker and denser. The twice cooked pork sandwich was pretty tasty, the pork needed to be more present compared to the veggies, but appreciated the crisp of the bread. The ramen had a good amount of braised beef and noodles. The broth needed a little doctoring to coax out some of the more savory notes. Broth needed more aggressive seasoning though. The price was not too bad for the area. It's kind of like dim sum, where you get a small plate for the price but it's all shareable and the flavors are good. It's not very well lit, gave the place a very dark air about it. But as a restaurant, it's pretty good. There's a lot of great places in that area, and this one's a good option if you're looking for small plates.

Inside is beautifully decorated, clean and staff was friendly and welcoming. Food was delicious, not everything was a home run - but not everything on a menu can be. The flavors were on point but a couple missteps in execution. But a solid 4-4.5. Our favorite dish was the seven flavor wontons. Wontons were super tender and flavors were on point. The spicy beef ramen was really good, but the broth was oily and too thin for our liking. We added some soy and asked for some hoisin - which made a big difference. Overall, We will definitely be back and try more menu items.

Lunch specials are smaller portion, but good for the price (raised to $12.95 now since my last menu photo) We split a lot of dishes because we couldn't decide: Wonton soup appetizer {4.5/5}: Loved how delicate the wontons were and the clear broth was great for a cold day. Tad too salty though. Lunch special --Braised pork belly {3/5}: Very tender, but kind of monotone in flavor. Very filling! Lunch special --Hot and sour gizzards {4.5/5}: This might freak people out in terms of texture, but I LOVE this texture. Good chew and pops of heat from the peppers and acid from the pickled green beans Lunch special --Cumin dish lamb {3/5}: kind of chewy and not as much flavor as I wished, but not bad! Outside is very much a busy shopping plaza in not the best part of town. Inside is a completely different story. Very clean and spacious, lots of booths and tables. Decorated well and a lot to see. The staff were friendly but there was a slight language barrier. We fumbled through the menu and found some bites to try. Food came out relatively quick, and that was a bit to manage because there were a lot of plates brought rather quickly. We got pics and dug in. The bites were flavored well. Nothing felt too greasy or under seasoned. The white pepper chicken was very crispy. But not a lot of chicken on each bite. The sweet and sour soup was both sweet and sour, but balanced enough that you could keep on eating it. The dumplings were fresh noodles and the filling was spiced well. The only flop was the spare ribs. Really tasty sauce, but very little meat on the bone. Had to suck on the bones to scrape enough meat off to make it a proper appetizer. It tasted good, just was not easy to eat. Price for the area was high for the neighborhood. It's got the quality and the flavor to command that price easily, but it doesn't match the stores. It's really good, but know that you're getting the real deal sichuan experience. Expect some heat, some saucy fingers, and some bones, and you'll get some really good bites

Personally, I didn't mind because it just meant my soup was perfect when it arrived, and my son's appetizer followed shortly after. I didn't check out the bathrooms this time, but judging by the rest of the restaurant, I'm sure they're just as immaculate. Black Bamboo is the only Chinese food I'll eat, period. If you know me, you know I'm picky, and this place never disappoints. Every bite tastes fresh, the service is friendly, and the vibe is always calm and inviting. Over the years I have had everything on the menu, and I've never had a bad meal. My personal favorites: the egg rolls, scallion pancakes, hot and sour soup and their fried rice, which I honestly think is the best in the world, period. Shu had an interesting market niche. The space will reopen as a Wokcraft, the latest version of An Asian restaurant at this location.

Did you ever cook rice and forget to salt it before you cooked it?…read more I went to Shu Express today, as I was craving some Sichuan cuisine, that had a little kick to it. So as I pulled into the Walmart-Big Y Plaza in Avon. I parked almost right in front of the little restaurant just to the left of Five Guys and the haircut place. After hearing how delicious lunch specials were, I decided to get one, and the owner/order taker informed me that because this is a holiday no lunch specials. I was ready to walk out. Then, after looking at the prices, I was double ready to walk out. But because of the trooper that I am, I ordered the Yangzhou fried rice. The order arrived, and it just didn't look right; but that's OK; I'm a trooper. The fried rice was missing corn and scallions, a staple to this Szechuan dish. As I dug in, it hit me immediately. There was no flavor. The rice had zip for flavor. The shrimp were not seasoned. The diced pork looked old, the beans sprouts looked OK, the peas looked fresh, and the mushrooms were warm, , but not cooked. This dish lacked flavor. It was almost like it tasted like water. I brought the dish back and asked if there was some type of sauce that could put on this dish, and the owner got pissed at me. Copped a real attitude. He gave me three little soy sauce packets and sent me on my way. How this restaurant earned 4 1/2 to 5 stars is beyond me. Yes, parking was great, yes, the place was spotless, but the food tasted like a dieters choice that you would order a Chinese restaurant like steamed broccoli with white rice. Flavorless and disappointing. Plus it wasn't cheap at $16 with a soda. Will I be back to this location to retry it? Nope With so many new locations popping up in Avon on Route 44, I'll spend my money elsewhere, trying new things. I'm just really disappointed in this place and the owner. Perhaps he should take a refresher course on customer service, and allow lunch specials on holidays. This place was not busy at all and I was there at lunchtime. I just don't see this place lasting.

This is the second time they have forgotten her rice in her order. She's unable to drive st this time so she can't just go and pick it up. Make sure you look at your order before leaving to make sure everything is there.

When I asked if he was able to separate my food from other people's food cooking, he had clean spatulas and put these dividers so they didn't mix. I was definitely happy and would love to come there again.

There are several different proteins, carbs, veggies, as well as a variety of sauces to choose from. I personally only went up two because the food was extremely filling but definitely worth the $20. Once you grab all your food you head to the circle grill and stand in front of a number and wait and watch for your food to be done. The seating area is nice and very similar to most Chinese buffets in the area so there isn't much to expect from there. Overall a great experience!
