What a cute little store with the friendliest owners!!!! You can smell the famous chicken when you park. Alden started to talk with me like he has known me for a long time and we just met. Made me feel like I was at home with friends just talking stories. This store made me go back down memory lane in Lahaina and the Hop Wo store we used to go to and get snacks when I was a little girl. It was so nostalgic. This chicken is the BUSINESS! We found this hidden gem on Yelp after searching for plate lunch and were NOT disappointed! The parking is limited but once we found a spot on the street, we entered the store. It's a bit cluttered inside with various items for sale, but the couple working in there greeted us with such aloha! We were given a small sample of chicken and tuna sushi roll (without asking) and loved it so much we immediately ordered two plates of chicken. It was so delicious, we couldn't even wait to get home, we just sat in the car and ate the entire plates including a sausage roll which was also tasty. The portion sizes were generous, the people were kind, and the prices were reasonable. I would highly recommend you stop in and try the chicken. Great people working here. For Townies (Honolulu people), it would be a 30 to 45 minute drive over the Pali. Waikane Store is just a couple of minutes away from the Waiahole Poi Company. Park in the front. Use kokua because there are no lines to mark parking stalls. Just be aware if you are blocking anyone and be ready to move your car when the person in front of you is leaving. Service is Aloha Spirit at its best. Each customer is greeted ipon entering the shop, and when the customer goes out the door, a warm "Take Care" is called out. When I arrived, they had run out of Fried Chicken, but they offered to make a new batch! Yay! I was prompted to open the refrigerator and pull out the bags of famous Boiled Peanuts. Mmm...not mushy! I also asked for some maki sushi rolls... Aunty said she would slice them up fresh for me! Thank you! They were onolicious! The delivery person (driving the Dreyer's truck) was filling the freezer with frozen treats. The Melona Fish caught my eye. I had to have one... it's a fishie waffle stuffed with vanilla ice cream and azuki beans...yum! I finished it right there. This is a small shop with a big glimpse of The Good Old Plantation Days when life was slow, casual, and simple. I've always wanted to check out the Waikane store, after reading all the great reviews about the fried chicken and sushi. We always pass by the Waikane store but never made a stop until my most recent stay-cations, the first time stopping by, I had no luck as Waikane store was closed and the 2nd visit we were in a rush to get to the Marriott, my husband asked me if I want to make a stop? Oh Yes, of course I do!! Note/if you are heading to North Shore side coming from Windward Mall, its really hard to make turn around if you miss making a right in to Waikane, since my other half already passed the store, we had to turn left in to the Catholic church and yield to on coming traffic to get back to Waikane Store, it was worth it. I took my pictures when I entered and browsed around quick. The store is super tiny and cute, due to the Covid 19 pandemic, I think the limit should be 1-2 person per entry. I got to meet the owner of store and she just carried out a new batch of her famous fried chicken, individually wrapped and ready for sale. I asked aunty what other items she has and she mentioned sushi, chicken, sometimes musubi and cookies. Sad to see no musubi and cookies available but I grabbed one roll of maki sushi and one serving of famous fried chicken. The chicken are sold by the lb at $13.50 per pound and the pre-cut maki sushi are $5.00 a roll. Before entering the store, my husband said "get what Waikane store is known for", we were happy to get to try the famous fried chicken and maki roll. Credit cards are accepted which was great, I made my purchase and as we were on the road, we ate the maki sushi and it was like, Oh my goodness moments, reminded me of small kid time when my friend's grandma use to make the rolls for New Years Day, something I've always looked forward to every year, brought back such nostalgic memories. Only a few pieces of sushi made it back to the hotel. I could taste the homemade freshness that was rolled in to the maki sushi. At the hotel we tried the chicken with some rice and kim chee, I must say the chicken was some tasty mochiko chicken. Besides the homemade goodies, at Waikane store you can do your post office business there, then grab slush, drinks, snacks, and even rubber slippahs if yours broke along the way. Besides the the sushi bringing back memories when I saw the Big Bol candies, it sure brought back memories too, I use to buy those candies and now the Big Bol candies are a bigger in size now. All in all, thank you to my other half for turning back, so happy that I finally got to check out Waikane store and had that nostalgic memories of small kid time, such a great start to the weekend! Stopped at Waikane Store on a jaunt to the North Shore and enjoyed their fried mochiko chicken and sushi on the side of the road, watching the beautiful blue ocean! Yum! It's so flavorful and juicy with just the right amount of pan fried crispness on the outside. Portion sizes are generous and no bones to have to worry about! To top it off the sushi rolls are ono too! My one recommendation would be to order one more order of chicken than you think you will need because you will definitely be wishing you had leftovers laters. Juicy, crispy, and flavorful, these large bites of cut up chicken pair perfectly with the sushi. Served in picnic paper cups and plastic wrap, you are ready to go.
