Super unassuming spot that serves up the juiciest, tender, and flavorful fried mochiko chicken. It's easy to miss on the side of the highway, but if you happen to drive over here, make a pitstop. The inside of the store looks like you walked into someone's house that is in dire need of some organizing lol. But don't be fooled, the older lady chefs up some incredible grub. I didn't see any menu displayed so you kinda have to know what to get before you get here. Just ask for an order of the fried chicken. When I ordered, the lady casually walked to the back of the store into the dark kitchen and started frying up the chicken right there. It was about $12 for about 4 generous pieces of chicken and wow that chicken was mother clucking good.

A very unassuming shop with a modest interior and exterior, very easy to pass by if you go too fast driving. Inside, you don't even know they serve one of the best crispy chicken (mochiko chicken) and solid maki (the roll was tuna, carrot, and egg) since there is no menu in sight and the store is like a general store. The mochiko chicken itself was about $10 and the maki was $8, offering a pretty good value snack. The chicken is so flavorful and juicy, with the right amount of sweet and savory, and the flour is just the right amount. We wanted to get seconds but we went on quite a food tour hitting 6 different spots so we were absolutely stuffed. The maki is good but I found it a bit too vinegary. Make sure to bring paper plates as the wrapper is a bit flimsy and you'll want to eat it fresh. They give a good amount of tuna and egg and it was still a pretty solid roll even though it doesn't really align to my taste preferences. Definitely ask and order the mochiko chicken!!

We was visiting a friend and heard about this local run store that served Michiko chicken & Hawaiian Style local Maki sushi, surviving 3 generations local family, decided to check it out. I passed the store many times throughout my life, but it always looked like it was closed and never notice any cars or anyone around. It brings me back to my younger days when there was no large chain supermarket that were available near the community, and there was a lot of mom & pop stores selling candies, bread, milk. Eggs and can goods and kerosene your little local community store where everyone meet and talk story with the owners and fellow community families. Yes! While there the owner was a friendly lady that was very enjoyable talking with and even though it wasn't the type of modern store of today the nostalgia cannot be ignored. Off road parking in front the store and store if there is more than 3-4 customers it would be crowded.

We bookmarked Waikane Store after seeing the reviews on Yelp and a video from Amanda and Felix Eats. As soon as we learned about this little hidden gem we knew we had to try it. We even made a special trip to this side of the island just to catch them while they were open. You could easily pass them right by if you weren't looking for them, but they did have a couple pop up flags by the road to attract attention, one said "Fried Chicken" while the other signaled "now open". The parking lot is less of an actual parking lot and more of a driveway, but it creates an easy spot to pull off and stop in, if it's already full you should be able to park off the street within walking distance. The shop itself is VERY small. You can probably only fit 2-3 people at a time with room to look around. This spot is the definition of a small hole in the wall spot, but there's a reason it's been around since 1898! We were greeted kindly by the owner and she was pleased to hear that we already knew about the mochiko chicken and maki. The chicken is sold by weight and the maki is sold by the roll. They also have little snacks, drinks, and even board wax available. We ended up each getting a container of chicken and I got a roll for later. We ended up devouring the chicken at the car. It was amazing, so flavorful and the rice flour coating made it both crunchy and chewy with the perfect seasoning. My husband ended up going back in to buy more chicken and we ended up getting some fresh from being fried, it was HOT and even juicier than the first batch. If we could have brought it home with us we would have bought even more, it was that good. This will definitely be something we crave going forward and will be a must visit spot anytime we visit this island. A very small business, but it has big flavor and great customer service.

Drove a few extra miles to this little hole in the wall because of reviews on Yelp. First of all you pull up and you are not sure if they are open. Looks like the little store has had better days on the inside and outside. That being said a friendly older woman takes our very basic order of chicken and cooked tuna roll which the two of us are sharing. There is no where to sit inside so we walk to a closed fruit stand with a roof to get out of rain to eat. The chicken was amazingly moist. My friend wondered how she could prepare it that way. Very Ono. The sushi roll was good and large. Although I wish there was soy sauce available. We were happy and satisfied. Visiting here felt like visiting a grandmother's house that unorganized yet well prepared very tasty food.

Must stop at Waikane Store for the Mochiko Chicken! It was so juicy and delicious! You will be so pleased when you do!

I can't remember where I had read about Waikane Store, but I had just pau Kailua beach and needed lunch. Google mapped it and there it was, on the side of Kamehameha Hwy. Look for the bright chicken flag! Parking is a little limited, but most people who stop, get their goods and go. When you walk in, it is a store. It's been around forever! My first thought was, "there's food here?" But a friendly hello and I just asked for the fried chicken and maki sushi. This is made old school style, tuna, egg, and carrots, wrapped in delicious sushi rice and nori. The wax paper wrapping reminded me of when my mom use to make it. Soooooooo ONOOOOO! The mom and son who run the store are so sweet and kind. They were selling a special soy sauce and gave me some chicken and maki to sample. It's really good and I should've bought a bottle. The chicken is simple; dusted in flour and pan fried. Some parts might come out a little charred, but I happen to like it. I did come back one more time to try the portuguese sausage maki, which is grilled and served with a light spread of Chinese hot mustard. Soooooo goooooood! I belong to this FB foodie group and posted my first visit. They were so appreciative, Alden gave me a Spam musubi on the house. They make it with fried Spam and sushi rice. I can't get it like this on the mainland! They do it right! If you are in the area, and need snacks or a soda, definitely stop by and pick up food to go! You won't be sorry! Mahalo Alden and Aunty!

Update: after our last visit , a year ago! Lunch time & had to stop for aunty's mochiko chicken & maki sushi roll. Parking was filled , but we did manage to get a spot . Store was packed with customers& the store was packed with mostly things from the way past everywhere. The mom / son team was busy in the kitchen friendly to all their customers& filling their orders! The mochiko chicken is fried to a crispy burn in some areas & so '' Ono'' tasty & delicious. Aunty says the rice in the sushi is imported from Japan& the sushi is the kine Old school Maki sushi! Happy that Waikane Store is still open after over 125 years. & that Mom & Son are great proprietors! Looking forward to going more often!

When you walk in you instantly feel home. The ambiance of friendly service, the aunty is so sweet and the owner gets happy to see new business coming in especially through social media! The chicken is soo good and juicy. Hands down the best chicken I've ever had. Every time I'm on the east side I will make it a point to visit the waikane store, and I hope everyone does as well - local and/or tourists, everyone must all go!

So it's a little drive to get here specially if you're staying in any of the tourist areas. It's a very small market with barely standing room inside. Not much room to park in front either. It's a mom and son operation but they are very friendly and very nice. The mochiko chicken is totally worth the drive. It's juicy, flavorful, and so Ono. If you have the time to cruise up for a quick grab and go meal definitely check them out!

Today I had a celebration of life @ Kualoa Ranch so I decided stop at Waikane Store . Many years ago I use to stopped by for their chicken and sushi. This small Ma and pop store is located right after crossing the Waikane bridge heading Northbound on Kam Hwy. it's a small store so it's easy to miss. It's a cute little store. I stop to get chicken and that's all I get. I haven't tried their sushi and I'm sure it's awesome. Run like a true mom and pop store it's easy to miss if you're speeding so slow down. It's a small store but over 100 years old and I'm sure providing the same awesome service. The chicken is tasty and I always enjoyed it. The people there are friendly and hard working. So if I'm ever passing Kualoa Ranch, this is a pit stop before the shrimp shacks!!

Wow I never would've guessed to stop here if it wasn't for Yelp. It's so easy to not notice, and I would never imagine it would sell prepared food. And yes it does, in addition to everything else you could imagine in such a small space (including USPS packaging and a slushee machine). It's cramped in there! We picked up some preprepared tuna sushi and fried chicken. The chicken was good but I imagine it would be amazing if prepared made to order. The sushi was a huge roll for $5 and to my surprise, the kids gobbled it up even with a healthy amount of sushi vinegar. Actually they started chanting sushi! halfway through the meal so that was a positive review. It was cool to be in such a historic building that has been around for so long. What a cute little store with the friendliest owners!!!! You can smell the famous chicken when you park. Alden started to talk with me like he has known me for a long time and we just met. Made me feel like I was at home with friends just talking stories. This store made me go back down memory lane in Lahaina and the Hop Wo store we used to go to and get snacks when I was a little girl. It was so nostalgic. I was then given a taste of the delicious chicken and sushi. Ahhhh, just like the okazuya kine from back home. So Ono! I will be back. Can't believe I live like 5 minutes away and didn't go there sooner! I love supporting small businesses. The also had the coconut candy that my brother loves that you can hardly find anymore. This chicken is the BUSINESS! We found this hidden gem on Yelp after searching for plate lunch and were NOT disappointed! The parking is limited but once we found a spot on the street, we entered the store. It's a bit cluttered inside with various items for sale, but the couple working in there greeted us with such aloha! We were given a small sample of chicken and tuna sushi roll (without asking) and loved it so much we immediately ordered two plates of chicken. It was so delicious, we couldn't even wait to get home, we just sat in the car and ate the entire plates including a sausage roll which was also tasty. The portion sizes were generous, the people were kind, and the prices were reasonable. I would highly recommend you stop in and try the chicken. Great people working here. First off don't be fooled by appearances, by far the best chicken I've tasted! Do yourselves a favor and try this store. The owners were so very welcoming and kind, very inviting and for me that's always a major plus. If you want a quick little something to holding you over for a little or a long while this place is very satisfying. I hope everyone gives it a chance. I love this little mom and pop store out in Waikane. The owners are really nice and always greet me at the door with a cheerful hello! They are known for their delicious Mochiko like fried chicken and the maki sushi. Both eaten together is "broke the mouth" ono! It's like how grandma used to cook the food! They have home baked cookies available sometimes, and those are good too! Don't expect anything fancy when you walk in to the store. And parking is available right in front the store. read more

Boiled peanuts is a savory local snack for Hawaii residents... When Ward encouraged me to go check out Waikane Store, the lure at first was the boiled peanuts, then the maki sushi and the fried chicken. Yes... old school kine grinds... I read reviews by Jarod, Lisa T., Rod U., and my cuz, Ric C. I was sold! Waikane is a small, quiet, rural town about 15 minutes drive from Kaneohe. For Townies (Honolulu people), it would be a 30 to 45 minute drive over the Pali. Waikane Store is just a couple of minutes away from the Waiahole Poi Company. Park in the front. Use kokua because there are no lines to mark parking stalls. Just be aware if you are blocking anyone and be ready to move your car when the person in front of you is leaving. Service is Aloha Spirit at its best. Each customer is greeted ipon entering the shop, and when the customer goes out the door, a warm "Take Care" is called out. When I arrived, they had run out of Fried Chicken, but they offered to make a new batch! Yay! I was prompted to open the refrigerator and pull out the bags of famous Boiled Peanuts. Mmm...not mushy! I also asked for some maki sushi rolls... Aunty said she would slice them up fresh for me! Thank you! They were onolicious! The delivery person (driving the Dreyer's truck) was filling the freezer with frozen treats. The Melona Fish caught my eye. I had to have one... it's a fishie waffle stuffed with vanilla ice cream and azuki beans...yum! I finished it right there. This is a small shop with a big glimpse of The Good Old Plantation Days when life was slow, casual, and simple. Just come on over if you want to feel some Old School happiness...and have some local kine grinds! read more

First time stopping by Waikane store today! Wow, the Yelp reviews don't lie - this place has the best chicken I have ever had. It's so flavorful and juicy with just the right amount of pan fried crispness on the outside. Portion sizes are generous and no bones to have to worry about! To top it off the sushi rolls are ono too! My one recommendation would be to order one more order of chicken than you think you will need because you will definitely be wishing you had leftovers laters. Owners were kind and friendly - great experience, will be back! read more

Chicken was moist and cooked well. Tray it came in could be better quality. Fell apart when I got home. Sushi tuna needed a little more shoyu sugar taste then it would be good with just egg. Rice was nice and warm! Staff/owner there were sooooo nice, welcoming and very personable. The island Mana and Pono way of life! PERFECT! read more

Had bought chicken there a few days ago and it was delicious. I've recommended to lots of friends and family. The service is so welcoming when you go in you are acknowledged right away with a hi how are you doing? It is a great place to go. I just wish it was closer to me as I live in town. However we do make the drive out there just for their chicken and friendship. read more

I've always wanted to check out the Waikane store, after reading all the great reviews about the fried chicken and sushi. We always pass by the Waikane store but never made a stop until my most recent stay-cations, the first time stopping by, I had no luck as Waikane store was closed and the 2nd visit we were in a rush to get to the Marriott, my husband asked me if I want to make a stop? Oh Yes, of course I do!! Note/if you are heading to North Shore side coming from Windward Mall, its really hard to make turn around if you miss making a right in to Waikane, since my other half already passed the store, we had to turn left in to the Catholic church and yield to on coming traffic to get back to Waikane Store, it was worth it. I took my pictures when I entered and browsed around quick. The store is super tiny and cute, due to the Covid 19 pandemic, I think the limit should be 1-2 person per entry. I got to meet the owner of store and she just carried out a new batch of her famous fried chicken, individually wrapped and ready for sale. I asked aunty what other items she has and she mentioned sushi, chicken, sometimes musubi and cookies. Sad to see no musubi and cookies available but I grabbed one roll of maki sushi and one serving of famous fried chicken. The chicken are sold by the lb at $13.50 per pound and the pre-cut maki sushi are $5.00 a roll. Before entering the store, my husband said "get what Waikane store is known for", we were happy to get to try the famous fried chicken and maki roll. Credit cards are accepted which was great, I made my purchase and as we were on the road, we ate the maki sushi and it was like, Oh my goodness moments, reminded me of small kid time when my friend's grandma use to make the rolls for New Years Day, something I've always looked forward to every year, brought back such nostalgic memories. Only a few pieces of sushi made it back to the hotel. I could taste the homemade freshness that was rolled in to the maki sushi. At the hotel we tried the chicken with some rice and kim chee, I must say the chicken was some tasty mochiko chicken. Besides the homemade goodies, at Waikane store you can do your post office business there, then grab slush, drinks, snacks, and even rubber slippahs if yours broke along the way. Besides the the sushi bringing back memories when I saw the Big Bol candies, it sure brought back memories too, I use to buy those candies and now the Big Bol candies are a bigger in size now. All in all, thank you to my other half for turning back, so happy that I finally got to check out Waikane store and had that nostalgic memories of small kid time, such a great start to the weekend! I can't wait to make a stop again and I know my big kids would love it. & Waikane Store Closed on Sundays & Mondays. Open from 9:30-5pm Tuesday -Saturday. read more

Very tiny convenient store on the side of the road. The chicken was good but a bit salty for our taste. Also rather expensive, we paid about $21 for two orders, each in a small tray. Friendly owners though. read more

Working remotely all week in these COVID-19 times necessitates getting out of the house by Saturday morning! Stopped at Waikane Store on a jaunt to the North Shore and enjoyed their fried mochiko chicken and sushi on the side of the road, watching the beautiful blue ocean! Yum! With only about 3 unmarked parking stalls, you pull right in front and enter what appears to be a small convenience store/house. Inside you will find three important things... Local hospitality Homemade maki sushi Homemade fried chicken All three will make you happy. Don't let the decor and relaxed atmosphere inside dissuade you...remember...you are visiting your family. My ratio for ordering is quite simple. One maki roll and two orders of chicken per person. Oh.Yeah. The maki sushi is old school and delicious. Vinegared sushi rice and vegetables are used to make this roll wonderful. It's even wrapped in wax paper like a picnic! The fried chicken is to die for. Juicy, crispy, and flavorful, these large bites of cut up chicken pair perfectly with the sushi. Served in picnic paper cups and plastic wrap, you are ready to go. Super amazing mom and pop store. Historic location for sure!! Known for they're mochicko Fried Chicken, and sushi rolls (Maki & Portuguese sausage). Even love coming here for their slushis. Can get em with or without icecream. Best part, can make your own flavored slush . They even have old school and new local vendor snacks. Even got awesome gifts or personal trinkets. Did some digging through Reddit looking for the best local places to go after Kualoa Ranch. The pictures looked amazing so we decided to stop by. The ultimate roadside stop with an amazing family running it! You might miss it if you're not looking for it but you need to make it a point to stop here. Old time mom and pops store (run by mother & son) with their fried chicken and maki sushi roll, along with yummy, unique snacks. These are the nicest people in the world and a true hidden treasure when you're headed towards the north shore. Everytime I stop there, I feel welcomed like family-- and remember how Hawaii used to be. This place is a must stop if you are going to Kualoa Ranch. The employees at the ranch recommended it and it did not disappoint! The food - amazing! Even my picky 9 year old loved the chicken and the Portuguese Sausage roll. The service was beyond amazing - not only the nicest people in Oahu, but honestly the nicest people we ever met. We extend our love and aloha to you from our 127 year old business located between Waiāhole and Kualoa park. Located at 48-377 Kamehameha Hwy, Kaneohe, Hawaii, 96744. Try our old fashioned cuisine. Hawaii-style makizushi, also called maki-sushi here in the islands; the recipe of which, originated from Grandma Haruko, known to uniquely have a strong vinegar flavor; consisting of cooked tuna, carrots and eggs. History

Established in 1898.

Established by Heong Thom as Wah Chan Store. In 1923 store name was changed to Waikane Store and sold to the Shiratori family. From 1929 owned by Jitsuhei and Yuku Moriwaki. In 1944, after the war, a World War II army mess hall was hauled to Waikane to be renovated and to replace the original building. From 1959 owned by Chiyoki and Haruko Tsutsui, son-in-law and 2nd daughter of Jitsuhei and Yuku Moriwaki. Store name changed to Tsutsui Store. From November, 1972, owned by Nadine Tokuzato, daughter of Chiyoki and Haruko Tsutsui. Store name was reverted to Waikane Store. Nadine Tokuzato runs Waikane Store with her son and daughter-in-law, Alden and Rachelle Tokuzato.

I just ordered the lasagna that had beef and pork mixed into it. It was baked in a small dish of it's own. It was pretty tasty. I like that it had more tomato-y flavor. My friends and I also shared some garlic cheese bread with marinara sauce. It was good. Overall, the food was pretty good. Nice atmosphere.

A Delightful Experience Dining Here... My wife and I recently had the pleasure of dining in today, it left an indelible mark on our palates and hearts. From the moment we stepped inside, we were greeted with genuine smiles and an inviting atmosphere. One standout dish was the boneless thighs they were delicious and flavorful, cooked to perfection. Additionally, I'd like to highlight the diligent individuals who manage this establishment; they are hardworking and among the most authentic individuals you'll encounter. As we were leaving, they kindly surprised us with a complimentary sushi roll, even though they were under no obligation to do so. They expressed gratitude and thanked us for choosing their establishment as our dining destination. It is evident that they genuinely appreciate their customers. read more

Found this place while watching HawaiianTraveler videos on Youtube, host Sean highly recommended this place and let me tell you...he did not disappoint! The people were incedibly kind and the food was delicious! We tried the Spam sushi and the fried chicken and both were amazing! I even went back into the store to see what else they had to offer and the owner (who is the nicest person I have ever met!) let me try the Portugese sausage sushi and it too was delicious! The fried chicken was probebly our favorite part of the lunch but altogether everything was amazing! Could not recommend this place more! They are also have a convenience store with all sorts of drinks/snacks, but the real stars here are the people (and the delicious homemade food)! We loved it and can't wait to visit again! read more

The Waikane Store has been around since the late 1800's and for good reason! Everything they make is homemade and you can taste the love they put into it. I especially like the maki sushi roll which is big enough to share. They have a secret ingredient which I think is picked radish but you will have to get one for yourself and try to figure it out. Another one of my favorites are the homemade cookies. They have a variety of flavors but for me the wedding cookies are the best! They are bite sized using all the best ingredients and go great with their specialty coffees. Super friendly family business that you can tell they have a passion for cooking and really enjoy what they are doing. Step through the front door of the Waikane Store for a trip back to Old School Hawaiian Aloha! read more

If you're heading to the windward side beaches, you have to make this stop. This is a humble, unassuming store, but the food they crank out is next-level. Listen, you come here for two things: Auntie's mochiko chicken and the maki roll. The chicken is crispy, sweet, savory perfection - seriously, it's the best. The maki roll is fresh, simple, and the ideal hand-held lunch. The food here is ono! Expect no fuss. Just great local grinds. And if Unko is there, be ready! He's famous for snapping a picture of you holding up the shaka or your goodies. It's a great, friendly local experience. Skip the big chains and grab your beach lunch here. My husband and I have been driving by the Waikane Store wanting to try their fried chicken for what feels like forever, always saying we need to stop and try it out. Well, we finally did, and let me tell you, we're so glad we did! The fried chicken here is absolutely amazing! The crispiness and flavors are out of this world. We've been craving it ever since we first tried it, and we can't wait to go back for more! This place is a must-try for anyone who loves fried chicken. Plus, the owners are super friendly, which just adds to the fantastic experience. We'll definitely be regulars from now on! read more

Hands down the best fried chicken joint in town! This family-owned shop radiates warmth and hospitality from the moment you walk in. The staffs (son and mom) are incredibly friendly and welcoming, treating you like part of the family. And let's talk about the food - the fried chicken is an absolute masterpiece, crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside, and bursting with flavor. We ended up getting fried chicken and futomaki. The chicken had a delicious depth of flavor, while the futomaki was perfectly seasoned. Our waiter was passionate about the food he prepared, emphasizing the use of high-quality ingredients and the importance of skill in creating delicious flavors rather than relying on shortcuts. Excellent food. Menu is extensive and seasonal to a particularly high standard. Definitely fine dining. It can be expensive but worth it and they do different deals on different nights so it's worth checking them out before you book. Highly recommended. read more
