Super unassuming spot that serves up the juiciest, tender, and flavorful fried mochiko chicken. It's easy to miss on the side of the highway, but if you happen to drive over here, make a pitstop. The inside of the store looks like you walked into someone's house that is in dire need of some organizing lol. But don't be fooled, the older lady chefs up some incredible grub. I didn't see any menu displayed so you kinda have to know what to get before you get here. Just ask for an order of the fried chicken. When I ordered, the lady casually walked to the back of the store into the dark kitchen and started frying up the chicken right there. It was about $12 for about 4 generous pieces of chicken and wow that chicken was mother clucking good.

A very unassuming shop with a modest interior and exterior, very easy to pass by if you go too fast driving. Inside, you don't even know they serve one of the best crispy chicken (mochiko chicken) and solid maki (the roll was tuna, carrot, and egg) since there is no menu in sight and the store is like a general store. The mochiko chicken itself was about $10 and the maki was $8, offering a pretty good value snack. The chicken is so flavorful and juicy, with the right amount of sweet and savory, and the flour is just the right amount. We wanted to get seconds but we went on quite a food tour hitting 6 different spots so we were absolutely stuffed. The maki is good but I found it a bit too vinegary. Make sure to bring paper plates as the wrapper is a bit flimsy and you'll want to eat it fresh. They give a good amount of tuna and egg and it was still a pretty solid roll even though it doesn't really align to my taste preferences. Definitely ask and order the mochiko chicken!!

We was visiting a friend and heard about this local run store that served Michiko chicken & Hawaiian Style local Maki sushi, surviving 3 generations local family, decided to check it out. I passed the store many times throughout my life, but it always looked like it was closed and never notice any cars or anyone around. It brings me back to my younger days when there was no large chain supermarket that were available near the community, and there was a lot of mom & pop stores selling candies, bread, milk. Eggs and can goods and kerosene your little local community store where everyone meet and talk story with the owners and fellow community families. Yes! While there the owner was a friendly lady that was very enjoyable talking with and even though it wasn't the type of modern store of today the nostalgia cannot be ignored. Off road parking in front the store and store if there is more than 3-4 customers it would be crowded.

We bookmarked Waikane Store after seeing the reviews on Yelp and a video from Amanda and Felix Eats. As soon as we learned about this little hidden gem we knew we had to try it. We even made a special trip to this side of the island just to catch them while they were open. You could easily pass them right by if you weren't looking for them, but they did have a couple pop up flags by the road to attract attention, one said "Fried Chicken" while the other signaled "now open". The parking lot is less of an actual parking lot and more of a driveway, but it creates an easy spot to pull off and stop in, if it's already full you should be able to park off the street within walking distance. The shop itself is VERY small. You can probably only fit 2-3 people at a time with room to look around. This spot is the definition of a small hole in the wall spot, but there's a reason it's been around since 1898! We were greeted kindly by the owner and she was pleased to hear that we already knew about the mochiko chicken and maki. The chicken is sold by weight and the maki is sold by the roll. They also have little snacks, drinks, and even board wax available. We ended up each getting a container of chicken and I got a roll for later. We ended up devouring the chicken at the car. It was amazing, so flavorful and the rice flour coating made it both crunchy and chewy with the perfect seasoning. My husband ended up going back in to buy more chicken and we ended up getting some fresh from being fried, it was HOT and even juicier than the first batch. If we could have brought it home with us we would have bought even more, it was that good. This will definitely be something we crave going forward and will be a must visit spot anytime we visit this island. A very small business, but it has big flavor and great customer service.

Drove a few extra miles to this little hole in the wall because of reviews on Yelp. First of all you pull up and you are not sure if they are open. Looks like the little store has had better days on the inside and outside. That being said a friendly older woman takes our very basic order of chicken and cooked tuna roll which the two of us are sharing. There is no where to sit inside so we walk to a closed fruit stand with a roof to get out of rain to eat. The chicken was amazingly moist. My friend wondered how she could prepare it that way. Very Ono. The sushi roll was good and large. Although I wish there was soy sauce available. We were happy and satisfied. Visiting here felt like visiting a grandmother's house that unorganized yet well prepared very tasty food.

Must stop at Waikane Store for the Mochiko Chicken! It was so juicy and delicious! You will be so pleased when you do!

I can't remember where I had read about Waikane Store, but I had just pau Kailua beach and needed lunch. Google mapped it and there it was, on the side of Kamehameha Hwy. Look for the bright chicken flag! Parking is a little limited, but most people who stop, get their goods and go. When you walk in, it is a store. It's been around forever! My first thought was, "there's food here?" But a friendly hello and I just asked for the fried chicken and maki sushi. This is made old school style, tuna, egg, and carrots, wrapped in delicious sushi rice and nori. The wax paper wrapping reminded me of when my mom use to make it. Soooooooo ONOOOOO! The mom and son who run the store are so sweet and kind. They were selling a special soy sauce and gave me some chicken and maki to sample. It's really good and I should've bought a bottle. The chicken is simple; dusted in flour and pan fried. Some parts might come out a little charred, but I happen to like it. I did come back one more time to try the portuguese sausage maki, which is grilled and served with a light spread of Chinese hot mustard. Soooooo goooooood! I belong to this FB foodie group and posted my first visit. They were so appreciative, Alden gave me a Spam musubi on the house. They make it with fried Spam and sushi rice. I can't get it like this on the mainland! They do it right! If you are in the area, and need snacks or a soda, definitely stop by and pick up food to go! You won't be sorry! Mahalo Alden and Aunty!

Update: after our last visit , a year ago! Lunch time & had to stop for aunty's mochiko chicken & maki sushi roll. Parking was filled , but we did manage to get a spot . Store was packed with customers& the store was packed with mostly things from the way past everywhere. The mom / son team was busy in the kitchen friendly to all their customers& filling their orders! The mochiko chicken is fried to a crispy burn in some areas & so '' Ono'' tasty & delicious. Aunty says the rice in the sushi is imported from Japan& the sushi is the kine Old school Maki sushi! Happy that Waikane Store is still open after over 125 years. & that Mom & Son are great proprietors! Looking forward to going more often!

When you walk in you instantly feel home. The ambiance of friendly service, the aunty is so sweet and the owner gets happy to see new business coming in especially through social media! The chicken is soo good and juicy. Hands down the best chicken I've ever had. Every time I'm on the east side I will make it a point to visit the waikane store, and I hope everyone does as well - local and/or tourists, everyone must all go!

So it's a little drive to get here specially if you're staying in any of the tourist areas. It's a very small market with barely standing room inside. Not much room to park in front either. It's a mom and son operation but they are very friendly and very nice. The mochiko chicken is totally worth the drive. It's juicy, flavorful, and so Ono. If you have the time to cruise up for a quick grab and go meal definitely check them out!

Today I had a celebration of life @ Kualoa Ranch so I decided stop at Waikane Store . Many years ago I use to stopped by for their chicken and sushi. This small Ma and pop store is located right after crossing the Waikane bridge heading Northbound on Kam Hwy. it's a small store so it's easy to miss. It's a cute little store. I stop to get chicken and that's all I get. I haven't tried their sushi and I'm sure it's awesome. Run like a true mom and pop store it's easy to miss if you're speeding so slow down. It's a small store but over 100 years old and I'm sure providing the same awesome service. The chicken is tasty and I always enjoyed it. The people there are friendly and hard working. So if I'm ever passing Kualoa Ranch, this is a pit stop before the shrimp shacks!!

My husband and I stopped in after seeing this place driving by and I'm so glad we did! We got the chicken and the sushi roll. Both were delicious but we both said the chicken was some of the best we'd ever had. The store is run by a mother son team and they were very welcoming. You can easily drive past it but we were on the lookout. We heard from locals that this was the spot for fried chicken and maki roll. We went later in the day but the quality and the flavor were definitely there. It was cooked perfectly. The maki roll was also delicious. A great little store. read more

Got done with work and yelped places to eat. I saw Fried Chickens and sushi! I had to try it out! We got there with 20 mins before they closed. They were hospitable and friendly! I bought 3 chickens, 2 sushi, and diy slushy floats! Then I saw they had the coconut long boys and got two of them and mentioned "yelp!" and got 2 Musubi's. Food: -Chicken was mochiko chicken - chicken thighs and boneless and not skinless - YUM!!! 5 stars! - Sushi was awesome and great! We smashed it all. - slushie floats - mine was diy (strawberry and blue vanilla mix with ice cream) and the lemon lime was my other half's! - Coconut long boys - but said! It's great! -musubi's were made with sushi rice. It's THE BEST musubi's I've ever had! Parking in front, way to find, small place, but the food is to die for! This is a must try! Ive lived on the island my whole life and not far away from this place, yet I missed this my whole life?! I have to make up for loss time! A must try! You really need to check it out! So glad we were able to stop at this small local shop. The owners are so warm & friendly. We got there quite early so they only had the chicken & tuna rolls available. They were so kind to give us samples to try even though they didn't have to. It's so pleasant to find business owners that are so humble yet take so much pride in what they do. Our kids enjoyed being welcomed by the "fried chicken" inflatable noodle guy. The owner told us that's how you know they're open - "if the noodle guy is there, we're open". Stop for this place if on island! This place is easy to miss as it's an unassuming little shop on the side of the road. I heard about it through a friend of a friend telling me of the home style mochiko chicken and wanted to give it a shot. It is a small family market that sells maki sushi rolls and chicken. It's just that. There's a few other varieties of snacks and drinks. Honestly what more could you need. If you are on this side of the island and want a well priced and delicious to go meal to enjoy by the beach like we did afterwards come here. The people who run this place and super friendly. Was on the way to kaaawe beach and wanted to take some food there, found this place through yelp. It's something you can easily miss of the side of the road, a small yellow shop. Inside its not very clear what to expect or what's for sale, it's very cluttered. I heard a couple guys in line ordering chicken. We get to the counter and the nice lady behind the register mentions they have fried chicken and sushi, we get offered a sample. Damn the chicken was delicious. Had a crispy skin, moist meat, and a nice soy/teriyaki flavor. The sushi was good but my woman liked it a lot, had some egg, carrot, and meat. Went to try the Waikane chicken.. don't let the appearance keep you from trying the food. Chicken was crispy and flavorful. Really enjoyed it. They definitely could clean up the establishment a little more to make it more inviting for customers but that's just my opinion. They were both super friendly. Would go back! read more

Probably our favorite experience on Oahu :) Owners are so friendly and sweet. We came right at opening time and got to see them prepping food / putting the iconic inflatable man outside. Try the chicken, it's incredibly tasty. Along with classic convenience store items, they also have Hawaiian specialties like taro chips and locally grown tea. Highly recommend stopping by! read more

This tiny local gem holds such great and ono-licious treasures!!! Not only was I magically transported to my "small kid kine days," but I also got to experience the nostalgic "mom and pop shop feels" too!!! Both Alden and Nadine were so warm and inviting-I truly felt like a big happy kid again! Their fried chicken and makizushi were so delicious-exactly how my grandmas and aunties used to make!!! And don't forget the boiled peanuts and lemon lime Slush Puppy too!!! Yummy!!! This store has so much rich and colorful history behind it too, and not to mention how wonderful you feel when talking story with Nadine and Alden. I have to be honest, I almost turned around as soon as I walked in. But the adorable women (I assume owner) insisted I try the chicken before I left. I am so glad she didn't let me run away. Holy cow, this chicken is amazing. So flavorful, moist, and just super tasty. We also walked out with two sushi rolls and they were both super good. After a few less than amazing food experiences on this trip I must say, this place made it all okay. This will be what I crave in Oahu when I go back to the mainland. read more

A must try hidden spot near Byodo-in Temple. It's a small local grocery store but also sells fried chicken and sushi roll. Both are super delicious! The store opened in the 1890s. We were welcomed by the staff. So glad we stopped by this place! read more

After reading some of the reviews on line I can say that they were spot on. I was greeted by a smiling Grandma and placed my order. She made the long drive from Central Oahu worth the time. Her son,I'm guessing, was in the back cooking more chicken and thanked me for my visit. He was also very friendly as well and we chatted a little. Some people don't realize the importance of great customer service. The chicken was delicious. Not sweet but just perfect. It was juicy and flavorful. The sushi rolls were old fashioned and good as well. As soon as I left I took a bite of one of the pieces and it did not disappoint. Even if you're not in the area and crave some tasty chicken that doesn't taste fried then head over to their store and enjoy the drive to beautiful Kaneohe. Nice people and great chicken. Long overdue review! This is from my visit to Honolulu last January. We were hungry for a light snack after going to the Kualoa Ranch/ Jurassic Park area. Found on Yelp that there was the Waikane Store just a few minutes away and decided to check it out based on all the great reviews. This was the best decision because the food was delicious! I grew up here in Hawaii and how did I never know about this place?? A couple of my fitness buddies and I did the Makahiki run in the north shore and they were stopping here after. I'm so glad I went along! They have delicious fried chicken and wonderful slushies that you can tailor to how you want it. This place has been around since 1898. Yes, EIGHTEEN NINETY EIGHT. MDCCCXCVIII in Roman numerals! In addition they have one of those canvas balloon guys that dances in front. You know you sometimes see them in front of car dealerships twisting and bending and moving their arms. If someone had told me before that I could go to a place in Hawaii that had all the best things like one of these dancing guys, fried chicken, slushies, and in a place that has been around since 1898, I would have said "get out of here you teller of tall tales, you spinner of deceit, you exaggerating exaggerator! History

Established in 1898.

Established by Heong Thom as Wah Chan Store. In 1923 store name was changed to Waikane Store and sold to the Shiratori family. From 1929 owned by Jitsuhei and Yuku Moriwaki. In 1944, after the war, a World War II army mess hall was hauled to Waikane to be renovated and to replace the original building. From 1959 owned by Chiyoki and Haruko Tsutsui, son-in-law and 2nd daughter of Jitsuhei and Yuku Moriwaki. Store name changed to Tsutsui Store. From November, 1972, owned by Nadine Tokuzato, daughter of Chiyoki and Haruko Tsutsui. Store name was reverted to Waikane Store. Nadine Tokuzato runs Waikane Store with her son and daughter-in-law, Alden and Rachelle Tokuzato.

This visit we ordered the Combo #1 Garlic Ulu Noodles with Portobello Mushrooms and the #4 Lechon (Pork Belly) with Malunggay Noodles. There were four of us with three little ones and this was enough to feed us all! The noodles were cooked perfectly as always, with great texture and flavor in every bite. A little tip: I always order ahead and time my arrival, just in case there's a long line. It makes the experience even smoother and lets me get straight to the important part, eating! Also, Adela's is takeout only. The good news is there are plenty of nearby spots where you can stop, eat, and enjoy your meal while taking in the island atmosphere. I wish I had remembered to take pictures of the food before we devoured it, but it disappeared way too fast. Thankfully, I did get a photo of the desserts display, which are every bit as amazing as the noodles. We tried the Ube Cheesecake and Passionfruit Cheesecake this time. Both were fantastic, but my favorites so far are still the Ube and Guava cheesecakes. Definitely put this place on your list of places to eat while you're here. The handmade noodles alone are worth the trip, and don't leave without dessert!

I just ordered the lasagna that had beef and pork mixed into it. It was baked in a small dish of it's own. It was pretty tasty. I like that it had more tomato-y flavor. My friends and I also shared some garlic cheese bread with marinara sauce. It was good. Overall, the food was pretty good. Nice atmosphere.

From the moment we stepped inside, we were greeted with genuine smiles and an inviting atmosphere. One standout dish was the boneless thighs they were delicious and flavorful, cooked to perfection. Additionally, I'd like to highlight the diligent individuals who manage this establishment; they are hardworking and among the most authentic individuals you'll encounter. As we were leaving, they kindly surprised us with a complimentary sushi roll, even though they were under no obligation to do so. Found this place while watching HawaiianTraveler videos on Youtube, host Sean highly recommended this place and let me tell you...he did not disappoint! The people were incedibly kind and the food was delicious! We tried the Spam sushi and the fried chicken and both were amazing! I even went back into the store to see what else they had to offer and the owner (who is the nicest person I have ever met!) let me try the Portugese sausage sushi and it too was delicious! The fried chicken was probebly our favorite part of the lunch but altogether everything was amazing! Could not recommend this place more! They are also have a convenience store with all sorts of drinks/snacks, but the real stars here are the people (and the delicious homemade food)! We loved it and can't wait to visit again! read more

The Waikane Store has been around since the late 1800's and for good reason! Everything they make is homemade and you can taste the love they put into it. I especially like the maki sushi roll which is big enough to share. They have a secret ingredient which I think is picked radish but you will have to get one for yourself and try to figure it out. Another one of my favorites are the homemade cookies. They have a variety of flavors but for me the wedding cookies are the best! They are bite sized using all the best ingredients and go great with their specialty coffees. Super friendly family business that you can tell they have a passion for cooking and really enjoy what they are doing. If you're heading to the windward side beaches, you have to make this stop. This is a humble, unassuming store, but the food they crank out is next-level. Listen, you come here for two things: Auntie's mochiko chicken and the maki roll. The chicken is crispy, sweet, savory perfection - seriously, it's the best. The maki roll is fresh, simple, and the ideal hand-held lunch. The food here is ono! Expect no fuss. Just great local grinds. And if Unko is there, be ready! He's famous for snapping a picture of you holding up the shaka or your goodies. It's a great, friendly local experience. Skip the big chains and grab your beach lunch here. My husband and I have been driving by the Waikane Store wanting to try their fried chicken for what feels like forever, always saying we need to stop and try it out. Well, we finally did, and let me tell you, we're so glad we did! The fried chicken here is absolutely amazing! The crispiness and flavors are out of this world. We've been craving it ever since we first tried it, and we can't wait to go back for more! This place is a must-try for anyone who loves fried chicken. Hands down the best fried chicken joint in town! This family-owned shop radiates warmth and hospitality from the moment you walk in. The staffs (son and mom) are incredibly friendly and welcoming, treating you like part of the family. We ended up getting fried chicken and futomaki. The chicken had a delicious depth of flavor, while the futomaki was perfectly seasoned. Our waiter was passionate about the food he prepared, emphasizing the use of high-quality ingredients and the importance of skill in creating delicious flavors rather than relying on shortcuts. Excellent food. Menu is extensive and seasonal to a particularly high standard. Definitely fine dining. It can be expensive but worth it and they do different deals on different nights so it's worth checking them out before you book. Highly recommended. read more
