Super unassuming spot that serves up the juiciest, tender, and flavorful fried mochiko chicken. It's easy to miss on the side of the highway, but if you happen to drive over here, make a pitstop. The inside of the store looks like you walked into someone's house that is in dire need of some organizing lol. But don't be fooled, the older lady chefs up some incredible grub. I didn't see any menu displayed so you kinda have to know what to get before you get here. Just ask for an order of the fried chicken. When I ordered, the lady casually walked to the back of the store into the dark kitchen and started frying up the chicken right there. It was about $12 for about 4 generous pieces of chicken and wow that chicken was mother clucking good.

A very unassuming shop with a modest interior and exterior, very easy to pass by if you go too fast driving. Inside, you don't even know they serve one of the best crispy chicken (mochiko chicken) and solid maki (the roll was tuna, carrot, and egg) since there is no menu in sight and the store is like a general store. The mochiko chicken itself was about $10 and the maki was $8, offering a pretty good value snack. The chicken is so flavorful and juicy, with the right amount of sweet and savory, and the flour is just the right amount. We wanted to get seconds but we went on quite a food tour hitting 6 different spots so we were absolutely stuffed. The maki is good but I found it a bit too vinegary. Make sure to bring paper plates as the wrapper is a bit flimsy and you'll want to eat it fresh. They give a good amount of tuna and egg and it was still a pretty solid roll even though it doesn't really align to my taste preferences. Definitely ask and order the mochiko chicken!!

We was visiting a friend and heard about this local run store that served Michiko chicken & Hawaiian Style local Maki sushi, surviving 3 generations local family, decided to check it out. I passed the store many times throughout my life, but it always looked like it was closed and never notice any cars or anyone around. It brings me back to my younger days when there was no large chain supermarket that were available near the community, and there was a lot of mom & pop stores selling candies, bread, milk. Eggs and can goods and kerosene your little local community store where everyone meet and talk story with the owners and fellow community families. Yes! While there the owner was a friendly lady that was very enjoyable talking with and even though it wasn't the type of modern store of today the nostalgia cannot be ignored. Off road parking in front the store and store if there is more than 3-4 customers it would be crowded.

We bookmarked Waikane Store after seeing the reviews on Yelp and a video from Amanda and Felix Eats. As soon as we learned about this little hidden gem we knew we had to try it. We even made a special trip to this side of the island just to catch them while they were open. You could easily pass them right by if you weren't looking for them, but they did have a couple pop up flags by the road to attract attention, one said "Fried Chicken" while the other signaled "now open". The parking lot is less of an actual parking lot and more of a driveway, but it creates an easy spot to pull off and stop in, if it's already full you should be able to park off the street within walking distance. The shop itself is VERY small. You can probably only fit 2-3 people at a time with room to look around. This spot is the definition of a small hole in the wall spot, but there's a reason it's been around since 1898! We were greeted kindly by the owner and she was pleased to hear that we already knew about the mochiko chicken and maki. The chicken is sold by weight and the maki is sold by the roll. They also have little snacks, drinks, and even board wax available. We ended up each getting a container of chicken and I got a roll for later. We ended up devouring the chicken at the car. It was amazing, so flavorful and the rice flour coating made it both crunchy and chewy with the perfect seasoning. My husband ended up going back in to buy more chicken and we ended up getting some fresh from being fried, it was HOT and even juicier than the first batch. If we could have brought it home with us we would have bought even more, it was that good. This will definitely be something we crave going forward and will be a must visit spot anytime we visit this island. A very small business, but it has big flavor and great customer service.

Drove a few extra miles to this little hole in the wall because of reviews on Yelp. First of all you pull up and you are not sure if they are open. Looks like the little store has had better days on the inside and outside. That being said a friendly older woman takes our very basic order of chicken and cooked tuna roll which the two of us are sharing. There is no where to sit inside so we walk to a closed fruit stand with a roof to get out of rain to eat. The chicken was amazingly moist. My friend wondered how she could prepare it that way. Very Ono. The sushi roll was good and large. Although I wish there was soy sauce available. We were happy and satisfied. Visiting here felt like visiting a grandmother's house that unorganized yet well prepared very tasty food.

Must stop at Waikane Store for the Mochiko Chicken! It was so juicy and delicious! You will be so pleased when you do!

I can't remember where I had read about Waikane Store, but I had just pau Kailua beach and needed lunch. Google mapped it and there it was, on the side of Kamehameha Hwy. Look for the bright chicken flag! Parking is a little limited, but most people who stop, get their goods and go. When you walk in, it is a store. It's been around forever! My first thought was, "there's food here?" But a friendly hello and I just asked for the fried chicken and maki sushi. This is made old school style, tuna, egg, and carrots, wrapped in delicious sushi rice and nori. The wax paper wrapping reminded me of when my mom use to make it. Soooooooo ONOOOOO! The mom and son who run the store are so sweet and kind. They were selling a special soy sauce and gave me some chicken and maki to sample. It's really good and I should've bought a bottle. The chicken is simple; dusted in flour and pan fried. Some parts might come out a little charred, but I happen to like it. I did come back one more time to try the portuguese sausage maki, which is grilled and served with a light spread of Chinese hot mustard. Soooooo goooooood! I belong to this FB foodie group and posted my first visit. They were so appreciative, Alden gave me a Spam musubi on the house. They make it with fried Spam and sushi rice. I can't get it like this on the mainland! They do it right! If you are in the area, and need snacks or a soda, definitely stop by and pick up food to go! You won't be sorry! Mahalo Alden and Aunty!

Update: after our last visit , a year ago! Lunch time & had to stop for aunty's mochiko chicken & maki sushi roll. Parking was filled , but we did manage to get a spot . Store was packed with customers& the store was packed with mostly things from the way past everywhere. The mom / son team was busy in the kitchen friendly to all their customers& filling their orders! The mochiko chicken is fried to a crispy burn in some areas & so '' Ono'' tasty & delicious. Aunty says the rice in the sushi is imported from Japan& the sushi is the kine Old school Maki sushi! Happy that Waikane Store is still open after over 125 years. & that Mom & Son are great proprietors! Looking forward to going more often!

When you walk in you instantly feel home. The ambiance of friendly service, the aunty is so sweet and the owner gets happy to see new business coming in especially through social media! The chicken is soo good and juicy. Hands down the best chicken I've ever had. Every time I'm on the east side I will make it a point to visit the waikane store, and I hope everyone does as well - local and/or tourists, everyone must all go!

So it's a little drive to get here specially if you're staying in any of the tourist areas. It's a very small market with barely standing room inside. Not much room to park in front either. It's a mom and son operation but they are very friendly and very nice. The mochiko chicken is totally worth the drive. It's juicy, flavorful, and so Ono. If you have the time to cruise up for a quick grab and go meal definitely check them out!

Today I had a celebration of life @ Kualoa Ranch so I decided stop at Waikane Store . Many years ago I use to stopped by for their chicken and sushi. This small Ma and pop store is located right after crossing the Waikane bridge heading Northbound on Kam Hwy. it's a small store so it's easy to miss. It's a cute little store. I stop to get chicken and that's all I get. I haven't tried their sushi and I'm sure it's awesome. Run like a true mom and pop store it's easy to miss if you're speeding so slow down. It's a small store but over 100 years old and I'm sure providing the same awesome service. The chicken is tasty and I always enjoyed it. The people there are friendly and hard working. So if I'm ever passing Kualoa Ranch, this is a pit stop before the shrimp shacks!!

We stopped at Waikane store for some of their delicious chicken and maki sushi as a treat before we go back to school. We also tried their Portuguese sausage maki today, and we were not disappointed. Going into the Waikāne Store transports me to the shave ice stand at Pōka'i Bay way back when. The fried chicken looks and kind of tastes like mochiko chicken, but each piece is much bigger than they look. Pieces are boneless, which is nice because they are priced by weight. The chicken was juicy--marinated very well, and the batter is nice and crispy. The maki sushi reminds me of the maki sushi of old--tuna, a little piece of scrambled egg (tamago-yaki) and a carrot, all neatly assembled within a hand roll of nicely flavored vinegar rice (sushi rice) and nori. The end product is wrapped in wax paper--so nostalgic. The man who was cooking in the kitchen greeted us when we walked in, and the woman who helped us was so incredibly friendly. And don't worry if you forgot your wallet--they have Clover, so they take card and contact-free (like Apple Pay). Support your local mom-and-pop businesses, and enjoy the taste of old Hawaii before it's too late. read more

My boyfriend and I are from Boston, we stopped by this mom and pop shop after our ATV tour, hoping to get some good food to fill our stomach- this place fulfilled it! When I tell you the chicken and sushi combination is OUT of this world, I mean it with every ounce of me. Not only that, but the owners are SO friendly and sweet, they gave us a free sushi! 4th of July 2019 When we stepped into the small Waikane store, the aroma of food smelled so good I had to get it! When we told Nancy the owner it was our first time there, she hurriedly got us some chicken samples. They were so delicious! The deep fried golden brown chicken pieces were tender, juicy and delicious! They are also famous for their maki sushi. So fresh! Nancy told us their store has been there for 121 years! I love the Waikane Chicken here.Whenever i cruize to North shore this is a stop i take for the chicken and the tuna sushi is a must for me because its one of the comfort foods i grew up it at North shore.The store is small and i wouldnt change its charachter.Its been the same from when i was little.The store owner is so sweet.It has alot of local goodies.I took my boyfriend here for the first time and he just loves the chip beef jerky and the waikane chicken and sushi.He alreadys says thats gonna be our stop every time we go north shore.The store is along side of Kamehameha Highway north shore Waikane.U can park right in front of store alot of spot to park and go in.Must try the chicken if u go North shore.Yummy goodness. read more

Their chicken is so good. I heard about this place over the years but I finally got to try it today. I almost walked out of the store because I thought I was in the wrong place but the lady inside asked me what I was looking for and I asked about the chicken and she brought it out. Nice flavor, super juicy inside and crunchy skin. This will be my new snack stop on the way to the beach when I come down this side. They said they been around for over 100 years!! read more

Blink and you'll miss it! Yep, its that small little store on the side of the road with the inflatable tube man dancing next to it. Pull on over and get you some chicken! We were fortunate enough to have stopped by when they were frying up a batch. Nothing beats fresh fried Mochiko chicken! Have a slushie with it and you're good to go! Assortment of baked goods (cookies to brownies) await you as well. Worth the stop off when you are out this direction. read more

One bite of the maki sushi and faded memories come rushing back... I don't know why we pulled off the road. Mile marker 33, Kamehameha Highway. A small, green wooden building. An old sign. Inside, nearly bare shelves. A friendly, elderly woman calls out from a raised kitchen "Hi, hi, hi. Can I help you? Chicken just came out. Shrimp, maki sushi and musubi ready too". Add some boiled peanuts and home made cookies and that's the entire menu. The maki sushi near perfect. Everyday short grain rice made sticky and flavorful by rice vinegar and sugar, softened carrot and kampyo cooked in soy / sugar, mirin infused sweet egg and colorful powdered dried shrimp cooked with canned tuna all rolled in fresh nori. The fried chicken; boneless pieces of chicken thighs marinated in a light, sweet soy, coated with a flour / mochiko mixture, then deep fried. Moist, crunchy, delicious. Quite possibly the precursor to today's mochiko chicken. The shrimp fritters, and musubi simple and as they should be. The memory: New Years Eve, my great grandmother and grandmother rolling over 100 rolls of maki sushi, many to be given to their neighbors. My mom frying ginger marinated pieces of flower coated chicken from a brown paper bag. My aunt frying the tempura. A six year old me, running 9x12 newspaper lined pans filled with cooling fried chicken, sweet potato, shrimp, gobo, and green bean tempura between them. At the time, the significance of four generations of immigrant Japanese Americans preserving their plantation heritage escaped me, the flavors of the food did not. Okazuya's hint at the flavors but have been corrupted by "modern taste". It is rare and just by chance that the Waikane Store has been run by the same Japanese American immigrant family since 1929. Currently the third and fourth generations, holds fort, continuing to cook the same food the same way, preserving the past. read more

"Life is a journey not a destination"-Ralph Waldo Emerson. "Yeah, da journey for great local grinds in da islands"- says Ric Prelude or conclusion to a "circle island" tour on Oahu has to include Waikane store. One of the oldest mom and pops on Oahu, they offer great grinds to munch on along the way. Pretty limited offerings in terms of the homemade stuff but what is offered is quite ono. The store is a small wooden building located on the Makai (Oceanside) of Kamehameha hwy about a mile before or after the Waiahole Poi Factory eatery depending on what direction you are coming from. One of the few businesses on the oceanside so it's relatively easy to find. Your four basic choices are the fried chicken pieces, the maki sushi roll, the hot dog sushi roll and assorted cookies. Sometimes they might be making it when you come by but if it's frying da chicken or rolling da Maki, the wait is always worth it. And I love dat hot dog sushi roll. They seem to use the Chinese type mustard in the roll and man it's good. Almost guarans that if you go in the late afternoon something will have run out but whatever is left, go gett'm, it will be worth it to try. Just make sure you have a designated driver because their homemade snacks are so good it's one of those "eat till you sleep" moments that will put the piggies who cannot control themselves into a "catatonic bliss". Making a trip to north shore? This is a great spot to stop by and grab some: boiled peanuts, tuna roll, fried chicken, or even a slushie! The boiled peanuts are lightly sweet in flavor and make a great snack! Highly recommended! The tuna roll isn't a typical Japanese sushi roll, instead, its like a salted tuna with egg and something else I'm not familiar with. The taste of the tuna mixed with everything makes this one of most unquie things I've ever eaten. Highly recommended! The fried chicken is a local style in which the chicken is marinated in soy sauce or something. Not really my thing as it was too salty for my taste. Whether you're a local or tourist, this hidden gem store is a must visit for their fried chicken! Thanks to poor planning by my family we discovered this place as we needed food to contribute for the picnic. The family is really welcoming and nice! Others don't make you try their food but this family made us try them and man let me tell you, their chicken is amazing! Ended up buying a tray and they asked us where we got em. So go and try them! Even just come by to have a good conversation with the son is nice. Tour busses should take tourists here instead when doing the island tour. read more

We extend our love and aloha to you from our 127 year old business located between Waiāhole and Kualoa park. Located at 48-377 Kamehameha Hwy, Kaneohe, Hawaii, 96744. Try our old fashioned cuisine. Hawaii-style makizushi, also called maki-sushi here in the islands; the recipe of which, originated from Grandma Haruko, known to uniquely have a strong vinegar flavor; consisting of cooked tuna, carrots and eggs. History

Established in 1898.

Established by Heong Thom as Wah Chan Store. In 1923 store name was changed to Waikane Store and sold to the Shiratori family. From 1929 owned by Jitsuhei and Yuku Moriwaki. In 1944, after the war, a World War II army mess hall was hauled to Waikane to be renovated and to replace the original building. From 1959 owned by Chiyoki and Haruko Tsutsui, son-in-law and 2nd daughter of Jitsuhei and Yuku Moriwaki. Store name changed to Tsutsui Store. From November, 1972, owned by Nadine Tokuzato, daughter of Chiyoki and Haruko Tsutsui. Store name was reverted to Waikane Store. Nadine Tokuzato runs Waikane Store with her son and daughter-in-law, Alden and Rachelle Tokuzato.

Found this place while watching HawaiianTraveler videos on Youtube, host Sean highly recommended this place and let me tell you...he did not disappoint! The people were incedibly kind and the food was delicious! We tried the Spam sushi and the fried chicken and both were amazing! I even went back into the store to see what else they had to offer and the owner (who is the nicest person I have ever met!) let me try the Portugese sausage sushi and it too was delicious! The fried chicken was probebly our favorite part of the lunch but altogether everything was amazing! Could not recommend this place more! The Waikane Store has been around since the late 1800's and for good reason! Everything they make is homemade and you can taste the love they put into it. I especially like the maki sushi roll which is big enough to share. They have a secret ingredient which I think is picked radish but you will have to get one for yourself and try to figure it out. Another one of my favorites are the homemade cookies. They have a variety of flavors but for me the wedding cookies are the best! They are bite sized using all the best ingredients and go great with their specialty coffees. My husband and I have been driving by the Waikane Store wanting to try their fried chicken for what feels like forever, always saying we need to stop and try it out. Well, we finally did, and let me tell you, we're so glad we did! The fried chicken here is absolutely amazing! The crispiness and flavors are out of this world. We ended up getting fried chicken and futomaki. The chicken had a delicious depth of flavor, while the futomaki was perfectly seasoned. Excellent food. Menu is extensive and seasonal to a particularly high standard. Definitely fine dining. It can be expensive but worth it and they do different deals on different nights so it's worth checking them out before you book. Highly recommended. read more
