Super unassuming spot that serves up the juiciest, tender, and flavorful fried mochiko chicken. It's easy to miss on the side of the highway, but if you happen to drive over here, make a pitstop. The inside of the store looks like you walked into someone's house that is in dire need of some organizing lol. But don't be fooled, the older lady chefs up some incredible grub. I didn't see any menu displayed so you kinda have to know what to get before you get here. Just ask for an order of the fried chicken. When I ordered, the lady casually walked to the back of the store into the dark kitchen and started frying up the chicken right there. It was about $12 for about 4 generous pieces of chicken and wow that chicken was mother clucking good.

We was visiting a friend and heard about this local run store that served Michiko chicken & Hawaiian Style local Maki sushi, surviving 3 generations local family, decided to check it out. I passed the store many times throughout my life, but it always looked like it was closed and never notice any cars or anyone around. It brings me back to my younger days when there was no large chain supermarket that were available near the community, and there was a lot of mom & pop stores selling candies, bread, milk. Eggs and can goods and kerosene your little local community store where everyone meet and talk story with the owners and fellow community families. Yes! While there the owner was a friendly lady that was very enjoyable talking with and even though it wasn't the type of modern store of today the nostalgia cannot be ignored. Off road parking in front the store and store if there is more than 3-4 customers it would be crowded.

We bookmarked Waikane Store after seeing the reviews on Yelp and a video from Amanda and Felix Eats. As soon as we learned about this little hidden gem we knew we had to try it. We even made a special trip to this side of the island just to catch them while they were open. You could easily pass them right by if you weren't looking for them, but they did have a couple pop up flags by the road to attract attention, one said "Fried Chicken" while the other signaled "now open". The parking lot is less of an actual parking lot and more of a driveway, but it creates an easy spot to pull off and stop in, if it's already full you should be able to park off the street within walking distance. The shop itself is VERY small. You can probably only fit 2-3 people at a time with room to look around. This spot is the definition of a small hole in the wall spot, but there's a reason it's been around since 1898! We were greeted kindly by the owner and she was pleased to hear that we already knew about the mochiko chicken and maki. The chicken is sold by weight and the maki is sold by the roll. They also have little snacks, drinks, and even board wax available. We ended up each getting a container of chicken and I got a roll for later. We ended up devouring the chicken at the car. It was amazing, so flavorful and the rice flour coating made it both crunchy and chewy with the perfect seasoning. My husband ended up going back in to buy more chicken and we ended up getting some fresh from being fried, it was HOT and even juicier than the first batch. If we could have brought it home with us we would have bought even more, it was that good. This will definitely be something we crave going forward and will be a must visit spot anytime we visit this island. A very small business, but it has big flavor and great customer service.

We caught the owner cooking a fresh batch of chicken. It was juicy, tender, and actually so flavorful as if it were marinated for a longgg time. The meat was perfectly cooked - there was a nice chew and char. It would've hit with mac salad or plain rice to balance the saltiness. We did also order a portuguese sausage roll and I highly recommend getting one. Apparently the rice is from Hokkaido and it's really good quality Japanese sushi rice that's seasoned well with vinegar and mustard. I loved the food and would 10/10 revisit and tell others about. The store's looks might be deceiving and it's really easy to miss, but the owner is doing amazing things in there!

Drove a few extra miles to this little hole in the wall because of reviews on Yelp. First of all you pull up and you are not sure if they are open. Looks like the little store has had better days on the inside and outside. That being said a friendly older woman takes our very basic order of chicken and cooked tuna roll which the two of us are sharing. There is no where to sit inside so we walk to a closed fruit stand with a roof to get out of rain to eat. The chicken was amazingly moist. My friend wondered how she could prepare it that way. Very Ono. The sushi roll was good and large. Although I wish there was soy sauce available. We were happy and satisfied. Visiting here felt like visiting a grandmother's house that unorganized yet well prepared very tasty food.

I can't remember where I had read about Waikane Store, but I had just pau Kailua beach and needed lunch. Google mapped it and there it was, on the side of Kamehameha Hwy. Look for the bright chicken flag! Parking is a little limited, but most people who stop, get their goods and go. When you walk in, it is a store. It's been around forever! My first thought was, "there's food here?" But a friendly hello and I just asked for the fried chicken and maki sushi. This is made old school style, tuna, egg, and carrots, wrapped in delicious sushi rice and nori. The wax paper wrapping reminded me of when my mom use to make it. Soooooooo ONOOOOO! The mom and son who run the store are so sweet and kind. They were selling a special soy sauce and gave me some chicken and maki to sample. It's really good and I should've bought a bottle. The chicken is simple; dusted in flour and pan fried. Some parts might come out a little charred, but I happen to like it. I did come back one more time to try the portuguese sausage maki, which is grilled and served with a light spread of Chinese hot mustard. Soooooo goooooood! I belong to this FB foodie group and posted my first visit. They were so appreciative, Alden gave me a Spam musubi on the house. They make it with fried Spam and sushi rice. I can't get it like this on the mainland! They do it right! If you are in the area, and need snacks or a soda, definitely stop by and pick up food to go! You won't be sorry! Mahalo Alden and Aunty!

Update: after our last visit , a year ago! Lunch time & had to stop for aunty's mochiko chicken & maki sushi roll. Parking was filled , but we did manage to get a spot . Store was packed with customers& the store was packed with mostly things from the way past everywhere. The mom / son team was busy in the kitchen friendly to all their customers& filling their orders! The mochiko chicken is fried to a crispy burn in some areas & so '' Ono'' tasty & delicious. Aunty says the rice in the sushi is imported from Japan& the sushi is the kine Old school Maki sushi! Happy that Waikane Store is still open after over 125 years. & that Mom & Son are great proprietors! Looking forward to going more often!

When you walk in you instantly feel home. The ambiance of friendly service, the aunty is so sweet and the owner gets happy to see new business coming in especially through social media! The chicken is soo good and juicy. Hands down the best chicken I've ever had. Every time I'm on the east side I will make it a point to visit the waikane store, and I hope everyone does as well - local and/or tourists, everyone must all go!

So it's a little drive to get here specially if you're staying in any of the tourist areas. It's a very small market with barely standing room inside. Not much room to park in front either. It's a mom and son operation but they are very friendly and very nice. The mochiko chicken is totally worth the drive. It's juicy, flavorful, and so Ono. If you have the time to cruise up for a quick grab and go meal definitely check them out!

Today I had a celebration of life @ Kualoa Ranch so I decided stop at Waikane Store . Many years ago I use to stopped by for their chicken and sushi. This small Ma and pop store is located right after crossing the Waikane bridge heading Northbound on Kam Hwy. it's a small store so it's easy to miss. It's a cute little store. I stop to get chicken and that's all I get. I haven't tried their sushi and I'm sure it's awesome. Run like a true mom and pop store it's easy to miss if you're speeding so slow down. It's a small store but over 100 years old and I'm sure providing the same awesome service. The chicken is tasty and I always enjoyed it. The people there are friendly and hard working. So if I'm ever passing Kualoa Ranch, this is a pit stop before the shrimp shacks!!

Whether you're a local or tourist, this hidden gem store is a must visit for their fried chicken! Thanks to poor planning by my family we discovered this place as we needed food to contribute for the picnic. The family is really welcoming and nice! Others don't make you try their food but this family made us try them and man let me tell you, their chicken is amazing! Ended up buying a tray and they asked us where we got em. So go and try them! Even just come by to have a good conversation with the son is nice. Tour busses should take tourists here instead when doing the island tour. read more

Amazing fried chicken! We stopped here after Kualoa Ranch. Literally a hole in the wall store but the lady working there was so friendly and helpful! Best best best chicken and sushi! Made right in their little hole in the wall . Mom and pop shop! My husband is from this side but I've only tried it when i met him and now i crave it OFTEN , but the drive is soooooo far . Very small and old shop and not open on sundays! Which sucks because we're always driving that way on sundays versus Saturdays. read more

Sweet baby Jesus that was some good fried chicken. I stopped because I was in dire need of something g authentic from Hawaii and I just so happy to stumble upon this place place on my return from Atving. I didn't check yelp beforehand as I went purely on instincts and boy am I glad I did. Chicken was so good I had to go back in and get some for the road. Upon entry I was met by a few locals and what I presume was the owners. Great customer service, small talk, and awesome chicken lol. It's places like these that make America great...good food and good people....can't wait to return one day read more

This place is so incredibly unexpected! Perhaps the best Fried Chicken I have ever had and served by the most lovely couple who are so sweet and kind. We actually just stopped for drinks for our family, and they gave us a sample of the Chicken and Sushi. We walked out to the car, turned right back around and placed an order for 2 plates. First time here. My co-worker who was with me at the tIme mentioned that this place supposedly have good fried chicken and we couldn't pass up on this opportunity since we're both fried chicken fanatics. I can never say no to fried chicken. Ordered the fried chicken and a roll of tuna sushi. Chicken was delicious; has that slight taste of mochiko chicken batter taste to it. It wAs moist and sliced into pieces. I was expecting bone-in chicken thigh or drumstick or wings. It came in a small portion foam tray and it was priced by the lb. Don't know how much per lb but with the one small portion of chicken and sushI roll, my total came out to around a little over $10. This place is a good place to stop by for some cold drinks, snacks, or some pupus if you're heading to North Shore or going town bound. They also have USPS packaging and they sell stamps too. read more

Whooo!!! Now this is a REAL, BONAFIDE, "mom and pop" store. They have been there about 125 years!!! What a MILESTONE!!! And it's every bit as you would expect a mom and pop store to be. Their signature items are their deep fried chicken (REAL TASTY). And their "maki-sushi". A portuguese sausage (YES, PORTUGUESE SAUSAGE) maki sushi and the standard tuna, egg with carrots. A quaint, relaxed, laid back place. Real comfortable. Get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I only wish they had a little more variety/selection. But what they do have is GREAT!!! read more

If you are looking for the best chicken on the island of Oahu... Then look no further!!! Waikane store has the best fried chicken in the universe, Bruddah Alden is the most aloha filled individual you can hope to meet, he is the icing on the cake. Always stoked and it's contagious. I always walk out of the store happier than when I entered. Seriously though, I'd go even if he was grumpy, the chicken is sooooooooooooo ono. They also have plenty delicious old school Hawaiian snacks. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! His mom or auntie is such a sweetheart too. Feels great supporting these guys every time I go to the north shore. I usually take the long way from Sandy Beach just for the chicken. So treat yourself and check them out soon, this place resonates old hawaii, it's a treasure!!! Just stopped by the shop for a few snacks and honestly its amazing. Everyone was super friendly and went out of their way to make sure we got what we needed. I've been coming here since before I hit double digits in my.. age.. and the flavors are still the same and soo well balanced. Perfect for a nostalgic moment or perfect for any moment, I would've attached a photo but it wasn't long before it was gone. This is the Hawaii that I miss, though I never once stopped here until this past January. Twenty three years on Oahu (spread out over three different time periods) and not only had I never stopped here (I'm sure I drove right by minimum fifty times), I never even heard of it. Sad. All those wasted years. In thinking about it, I wouldn't change a thing about this mom n' pop store. Here there is a time worn charm that can't be fabricated. A beautiful sense of place. Delicious homemade snacks prepared lovingly by delightful people. There's local style fried chicken, shrimp fritters, old-school makizushi, hot dog musubi, cookie filled baggies, and even a slushy machine. Setting foot in side reminded me of all the general stores of my youth: Toyo's where I'd spend my Manoa summers getting icee. The place where Diamond Head Grill and Market is now where I bought my first Topps baseball card pack (the first card was Pete Rose). 21 Mart, which is still around, where I love to get Poke. Ruger market, boiled peanuts. Waiola, for my shaved ice addiction. (Yes, I realize that some of those places are more "neighborhood liquor store" than "general store". Waikane is not though.) While I consider this a true hidden gem, I know it won't be so for everyone. But for those seeking a place that's real, a place of character, a place that encapsulates a bit of history, a place with simple ono grinds and simply wonderful people, stop by here and seek no more. I can never get enough of these OldSkool/Mom&Pop Stores. I remember this store during the 1960s... I use to walk home from church just to stop in for the almond cookie and chocolate drink (similar to Yahoo) Other times I'd buy the penny candies or the cracked seed which was served in a brown paper bag. Now days, I get the fried chicken & maki sushi and if its not sold out the fried shrimp and cookies that will never ruin your meal choice. Supporting local businesses is key to having a productive community. Hoping they stay open forever!!! read more

We extend our love and aloha to you from our 127 year old business located between Waiāhole and Kualoa park. Located at 48-377 Kamehameha Hwy, Kaneohe, Hawaii, 96744. Try our old fashioned cuisine. Hawaii-style makizushi, also called maki-sushi here in the islands; the recipe of which, originated from Grandma Haruko, known to uniquely have a strong vinegar flavor; consisting of cooked tuna, carrots and eggs. Along with that, we have our famous Waikane Fried Chicken of which people have commented to be the best. Looking for GUITAR & ukulele strings? Come on down! History

Established in 1898.

Established by Heong Thom as Wah Chan Store. In 1923 store name was changed to Waikane Store and sold to the Shiratori family. From 1929 owned by Jitsuhei and Yuku Moriwaki. In 1944, after the war, a World War II army mess hall was hauled to Waikane to be renovated and to replace the original building. From 1959 owned by Chiyoki and Haruko Tsutsui, son-in-law and 2nd daughter of Jitsuhei and Yuku Moriwaki. Store name changed to Tsutsui Store. From November, 1972, owned by Nadine Tokuzato, daughter of Chiyoki and Haruko Tsutsui. Store name was reverted to Waikane Store. Nadine Tokuzato runs Waikane Store with her son and daughter-in-law, Alden and Rachelle Tokuzato.

Found this place while watching HawaiianTraveler videos on Youtube, host Sean highly recommended this place and let me tell you...he did not disappoint! The people were incedibly kind and the food was delicious! We tried the Spam sushi and the fried chicken and both were amazing! I even went back into the store to see what else they had to offer and the owner (who is the nicest person I have ever met!) let me try the Portugese sausage sushi and it too was delicious! The fried chicken was probebly our favorite part of the lunch but altogether everything was amazing! Could not recommend this place more! The Waikane Store has been around since the late 1800's and for good reason! Everything they make is homemade and you can taste the love they put into it. I especially like the maki sushi roll which is big enough to share. They have a secret ingredient which I think is picked radish but you will have to get one for yourself and try to figure it out. Another one of my favorites are the homemade cookies. They have a variety of flavors but for me the wedding cookies are the best! They are bite sized using all the best ingredients and go great with their specialty coffees. Super friendly family business that you can tell they have a passion for cooking and really enjoy what they are doing. Listen, you come here for two things: Auntie's mochiko chicken and the maki roll. The chicken is crispy, sweet, savory perfection - seriously, it's the best. The maki roll is fresh, simple, and the ideal hand-held lunch. The food here is ono! Expect no fuss. Just great local grinds. And if Unko is there, be ready! Our server was very helpful and even brought out a pamphlet explaining each dish. After reading it over, the three of us decided to each try one of the signature Hawaiian combo plates. LAU LAU COMBO (PORK) - 22.99 + poi + lomi salmon The set came out in cafeteria-style trays, almost like a grade school lunch. Our server recommended eating the main entree and lomi salmon with poi, a fermented taro paste. Judging by how it looked, I thoroughly expected the poi to be sweet, but it was actually much more sour, almost like yogurt. I didn't enjoy it too much on its own, but it worked incredibly well with the pork lau lau. The pork was mostly tender and juicy, with a fragrant, leafy steamed flavor that reminded me of the Chinese zong zi my mom makes. The leaner parts of the pork were a bit dry, but the steamed taro leaves helped. The lomi salmon (salted salmon mixed with onions and tomatoes) was refreshing, although the pungent raw onions were a bit much for me. The 'uala (steamed sweet potatoes) had a natural, earthy sweetness that we all enjoyed. Lastly, the haupia (coconut pudding) was incredibly tasty, with a strong coconut flavor that made me sad when I took my last bite. One of my friends got the chicken lau lau, which we actually enjoyed even more. The chicken was delicious, and there was so much of it. Overall, we enjoyed getting to try some authentic Hawaiian dishes at Highway Inn, especially our server and the pamphlet gave us a better understanding of what we were eating.

Not the touristy version. We wanted to actually experience some of the local food, and she recommended Highway Inn Restaurant & Catering. So of course, we had to give it a try! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt very laid-back and comfortable. Nothing overly fancy or trying too hard. It had that relaxed, home-style feeling where you could just sit down, eat, and enjoy yourself. Now let's talk about the food! I had the BBQ chicken with rice and salad, and that chicken was so tender! The barbecue sauce was absolutely delicious, and surprisingly, that salad was GOOD too. I loved the dressing they served with it. The hubby went more traditional and ordered the Lau Lau with pork, which gave us exactly what we came for, a chance to experience Hawaiian food while we were here. But y'all... I have to mention something completely random. THE COKE! I don't know what was going on with that Coke, but it tasted like Coke used to taste back in the day! I kept saying, "Now THIS tastes like a Coke!" Sometimes it really is the little things. The service was great. Our server was friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience easy and enjoyable. Once you figure that out, it's pretty easy. We ordered two meals and the guy taking our order was really nice and helpful. They gave us a little buzzer to let us know when the food was ready, and it only took a few minutes. Everything came out nice and hot and the food was pretty good. The portions were good too. The only thing I wasn't really sure about was the white sauce. I thought it was going to be ranch, but it definitely tasted different from any ranch I've had before. Otherwise I might not have ever discovered this wonderful poke and plate lunch spot. I ordered the Ahi Fever, which was absolutely packed to the brim with food. They practically stuffed a lunch buffet in the box. When I picked up the plate to take home, I knew I was in for a gigantic meal. It was HEFTY. The Ahi Fever plate comes with spicy mayo poke, furikake seared ahi with wasabi aioli, and a kimchi ahi patty. All the main dishes were delicious, but I was equally impressed with the other offerings that were included. In addition to the mains, the plate contained the following: - heaping serving of rice covered in furikake - sizable portion of romaine and tomato salad with dressing - kim chee - beni shoga - daikon - seaweed salad - other assorted pickled veggies The volume and variety of dishes packed into this one plate lunch was impressive. The Spicy Shoyu Ahi is to die for but all their other selection is amazing. You really can't go wrong with any choice!
