This place is fantastic. They've always taken great care of my car. They've been honest about what needs to be done and what can wait. I also feel like the prices are fair given the competition. What sets them apart is their customer service. For instance, I moved from Evanston last fall and realized two months ago that two rotors that they'd put in for me last summer were warped. When I called to see if it was under warranty, they not only were helpful but actually offered to replace the entire cost of having new ones put on--in Tennessee. They actually sent me a check. Amazing. Warren said that he stands behind his work. These are nice guys who do great work and take pride in their business. You can't ask for more. read more

So unfortunately, I have to update this review to give far fewer stars. I had been going to Warren's just to get oil changes over the past few years, but I noticed that every time I went, they would say, "Oh, you need this or that repair, it will cost you $500." When I checked it out with my Honda repair person, they would say, "no, you don't need that repair." A few weeks ago, I decided not to go back to Warren's. I entered the shop 9 months pregnant, telling them I wanted to get an oil change (so I wouldn't have to do so soon after the baby's birth) and that I wanted to get the brakes checked -- this was one of the things they had scared me about at my last oil change. Something along the lines of "you're down to 20% on your left brake pad"). I went to wait at Whole Foods, as they said it would take an hour; they called 15 minutes later and said that in my car, they could only use premium oil, which would cause the oil change to be $50, not $25. I said that I've been getting my oil changed there for years and this was the first time anyone told me I needed premium oil. I told him to just go ahead with the regular oil my plain old Honda Civic has been getting for the past few years. He also said that my brakes needed to be overhauled, which in my pregnant, safety-concerned state, I went ahead with. He also said I needed an additional $450 repair for drippy gaskets (or something along those lines that I'd never heard of, haven't been having a problem with, etc.). If I had gone with the repairs he had suggested, I would have been paying over $1,000 instead of just getting my $25 oil change. While Warren himself had helped me in the past, this trend of gradually pushing expensive repairs on customers -- ostensibly and especially female customers -- has become too much to ignore. I find it especially upsetting that the shop tried to frighten me into getting unneeded repairs, perhaps, because I was pregnant. That's just not cool. And I'm just going to go to Jiffy Lube for my plain old oil changes from now on. read more

Just had to come back to yelp for Warren's Shell. I just can't tell you how many times since 2010 they've saved my ass. Just to give you guys a very specific example of how honest these guys are: My VW Golf died a few weeks ago. I could drive it for like 5 miles and BAM it stalled. I finally got it to Warren's thinking it was the fuel pump and at first, that's what their guys thought. I got an estimate that was pretty pricy and was bummed but had no choice because I won't take my car anywhere else. The next day when the work was about to be done, Warren must've got his hands on things and called me. Even though i agreed to the job they thought it was the day before, he clarified that it wasn't the pump and it was just the fuel sensor (a job that was less than half the priced out original job). So many guys out there would be sneaky about that kind of situation, but never at Warren's. They also got one of my cars through the emissions tests that failed so if you get the evil engine light on and need a place to take your car to get you through the test, this is the place for that and any other car problems. read more

My battery light came on late sunday afternoon, this was the only place open. Replaced my battery, which was pretty old. In doing so, they determined the alternator was bad and quoted me $430 to change it out (though couldn't guarantee price bc their parts supplier was closed). Took my car to my usual mechanic this morning, got it fixed for $275. Good luck, future consumer. read more

Warren has been taking care of our family's cars for many years, and we are thrilled with his expertise, his honesty, and his service. It's usually a matter of minutes before he diagnoses the situation or deciphers our cars' quirks; repairs are made quickly with everything always resolved, and he regularly goes above and beyond. A couple years ago, we had a technical issue that was preventing our car from passing emissions, and when I mentioned it to him, he took our car back in himself and sorted it out! My wife found our car battery was dead in an unforgivable cold winter morning in January. Fortunately, with our neighbor's help, we eventually got the car jump started. As the battery has been replaced less than two years by Warren, we think it should be still covered under the warranty, but not 100% sure. My wife toke the car to Warren's shop, and Warren replaced the dead battery without any questions. He even did the job in the freezing COLD outside and let my wife wait in the WARM office! Just a few minutes, he finished the work and gave us another 2 years warranty for a Brand-New battery WITHOUT any charge for the battery and the labor not even mention that the issue of the dead battery might be caused by a repair work from another auto shop. Warren is a great, reliable mechanic with a warm-heart, and I would definitely recommend people coming here if you want your car taken care by reliable & professional mechanics! read more

So I had read the review on Yelp for Warren's and I decided to go when thinking I might need tires. I talked to the one of the guys there and he took at my tires and said I had plenty of tread left. To me this is testament to a vendor that is completely honest when they choose not to make a sale when they possibly could have. If I could give zero I would. I got a flat tire last night. Drove to this station where I was told they could not help me. I called AAA, thankfully they came and changed my tire....not before been threatened by this station that if I didn't move my car and have AAA tow it to another location the police would be called. They are friendly and if you get something repaired it will probably last. However, I took my car in for an oil change/25 point inspection and they claimed to find all these things wrong with my car. For example, they said my brake pads were 50% worn and I needed new pads and rotors, front and rear, costing about $700. You really don't need to replace pads until they get to 20%. I asked Ashland Tire and Auto for a second opinion and quote. They quoted me $550 for the brake work and it turns out that my brakes are fine. Warren's did catch a few items that really do need to be replaced, so they didn't totally scam me, but I won't go back there. read more

I used to frequent Warren's as a customer because of the convenient location. A number of years ago my car stalled a few blocks from Warrens... I was out of gas. I stopped by Warren's to see if I could borrow a gas can, so I could get my car going. They said I would have to buy a $12 plastic gas can, that they couldn't lend me one. In addition to that their gas prices are always the highest around that I've seen. I will never....ever......go there again. read more

I pushed my wife's car from whole foods to warrens she'll service, late afternoon last week. Though warren was not there, I left the car in his care. The next day, warren called me and proceeded to explain why the car would not start. To his credit, he was very thorough and professional. He explained every step and how much I would cost. My wife went to pick up the car the next day, and to her surprise the check engine light was on and the car was terribly underpowered. She returned and warren said he fixed the initial problem and that was the extent of his involvement. I took the car to my usual mechanic and warren had accidentally blown a fuse while he was cutting some wires. A blown fuse warren, nothing more, nothing less. A 5 minute repair, yet you let my wife drive away in a dangerous car. read more

Selfishly, I don't want anyone to read this review. I want Warren all to myself whenever my car takes a poopy. I am new to the city and I am a girl. This combo leaves me terrified that I might end up getting talked into a $400 oil change somehow. Warren's is so close to my house, I thought it would be too good to be true if he was "the one". But, my auto prayers were answered when I rolled into the parking lot with a flat spare tire. A mechanic met me at my car door and I had a quote on new tires in 5 minutes. Warren is a no-pressure salesman. He understands that people are not super-stoked to spend copious amounts of money on car repairs. After I settled on only getting 2 tires for now, Warren told me everything that I needed in the future and mapped it out as far as which I should get now and what can wait a while. I really appreciate his honesty and I will be a loyal customer until he quotes me a $400 oil change :) read more

This is a great little place to bring your car into for a fix. The owner, Warren, took a look at my car right away. My transmission was out of gear, and I couldn't get it into park. I dropped it off at night so they said I'd get a quote at 9 A:M. Sure enough the phone rang at 9 with a very fair estimate and diagnosis of the problem. My car has about 200k miles so I told him we'd be looking at new cars first. The estimate was free with no hassling whatsoever. If I don't buy a new car, I'll have it fixed by them. My wife has had oil changes and tires done there and it's been a very convenient experience. Great and headache free if you live in the area. read more

Warren's is fantastic. We have used them many, many times for our Volkswagon Passat and have been amazed at the quality of service. They provide honest feedback, and help us differentiate between urgent maintenance items and those that can be delayed without concern. They take the time to explain issues thoroughly and never pressure us into purchasing services. Recently the staff even delivered our car back to our home after being serviced just to save us some trouble - we didn't even ask! Everyone we have dealt with at Warren's has been very kind. Great auto shop. Fantastic customer service. You can't really get honest customer service these days and this shop is very different from many auto shops that I have been to. The only thing I was initially uncomfortable with is the checklist of stuff that they ask you to keep an eye on. The long list always makes me nervous that my car is going to break down soon. I would like them to prioritize better...what is absolutely critical versus what is nice to have. At the end of the day, I guess they do it for my safety:) read more

I've been there several times for oil change and emergency car service. I find their quotes a bit pricier than Grossinger Honda's (the nearest Honda dealer from my place). However, I found them to be honest and they've done great work on my car each time I took it there. After having had enough of overpriced and underwhelming service from a few local shops, I finally decided to listen to all the Yelpers and give Warren's Shell a shot. Immediately, I was glad I did. I tested the waters by asking him to fix an issue with my hood latch cable, which opens the hood of the vehicle when you pull on the latch inside the car. I was pleased to discover that his estimate for the job was 50% that of competing shops in the area. That was 3 or 4 years ago, and since then, I've visited the place for everything from oil changes to troubleshooting weird engine sounds. I've always been impressed by their quick turnaround time, communicability, and sense of pride in their work. It's obvious Warren loves what he does, and in the time I was a customer, the other mechanics on his staff exemplified a similar customer-centric attitude in my interactions with them. The hours of operation have also been very convenient for me. For example, I'd often drop my car off Sunday evening at the shop, and by late morning Monday I'd usually get a call with a diagnosis and quote for the work to be done on the car. The only negative experience I had was fairly brief, painless, and to Warren's credit - not his shop's fault. A local Toyota dealership kept making mistakes and sending the wrong part in for him to replace in my car. Finally, I gave up (after Warren tried 3 times with Toyota) and decided to followup with Toyota directly. Luckily this was a small plastic aesthetic part that was not necessary for proper functioning of the vehicle. Even then, Warren's ongoing efforts to solve the issue were commendable given the continual negligence of the Toyota dealership he was expecting parts from. My short takeaway: Quality technicians, honest pricing, quick turnaround times, excellent customer service. Exactly what I'd want from an auto repair shop. read more

I had a coupon ($24.95) for an oil change. my car has only 55,000 miles on it, and it is 10 years old. i have only owned it for 5 years (i bought it with 40,270 miles on it). recently had the wheels aligned. I went in for the oil change, came out with my wheels unaligned and a statement from Warren's that stated my car needed 3 of its struts replaced, and one of the strut's spring had come out (all by itself), needed a new battery, the window wipers (which had been working perfectly well) were hacked up to leave lines across my front windows, needed new tires (only 15,000 miles were on the set), and an oil leak (it would leak because they put in 4 1/2 quarts instead of the 4 quarts required) totaling $1810. Warren's must be desperate for work. i, however, will never use them again. i recommend people who are 65 and older with a used car to never use Warren's. they are dishonest. i now have a car with unaligned front wheels, and i will never step foot in his service station. i have had used cars all my life including a 20 year old VW with portions of its floor board missing; however, the struts were fine. read more

I will never frequent this station again. I stopped there this morning because I needed air in my tire as it was very low and very cold out. The clerk was checking the tire pressure on another woman's SUV as I was walking in to get a solid quarter. I asked him if he could help me put air in my tire because there was a sign on the machine about holding the gauge under your exhaust for 15-30 seconds in extremely cold weather. He refused by telling me that he wouldn't have someone in to do that until 10am. I am clearly 8 months pregnant and I clearly just saw you checking the pressure on another woman's vehicle. No courtesy at all. For the first time in a long time I felt so very small in a town that I work in. read more

I'm a natural skeptic and am keenly aware of shops that oversell repair work and overcharge where they can get away with it. Being new in Chicago last year, I was eager to find a mechanic that I could trust. Warren's Shell is definitely that shop. Warren lives in the neighborhood a few blocks from his shop and treats his customers like the neighbors they are. I took my car in last fall for an oil change and he very helpfully pointed out that my battery was on its last leg and gave me a great deal on a new one. Another time I was getting some gas and mentioned that my check engine light was on. Before I new it he was digging around under the steering wheel and reading me the diagnosis from the computer, which turned out to be a transmission problem. Although they don't do a lot of transmission work on site, he offered to get his buddy who runs another shop to take a look at it to let me know what the problem would be. When it came back that the whole transmission would likely need to be replaced, Warren told me to think it all over and that I could probably drive on it for awhile with no problem, and he didn't charge me a thing for all the trouble he went through. Just recently he gave me a great deal on a set of specialty tires and had them ordered, delivered, and put on in under 24 hours. Although I care about getting a good deal as much as anyone else, what I really care about is trusting that I'll be taken care, that I won't be ripped off, and that I don't need to deal with a slimy sales guy who's always trying to sell me something I don't really need. Warren's a straight shooter who is fair and reliable, someone I trust and respect. He'll certainly be getting my business for the foreseeable future. read more

I joined yelp just to say how great my experience was here. I recently moved here and had to find a new mechanic. My brakes were making a funny noise so I took it in to Warren's after seeing all of the positive responses on yelp. He was great - we went on a test run together so I could tell him about the problem as it was happening. It was an easy fix and he didn't charge me anything. I'd like to think of Warren as my new best friend. He saved me from a terrible e-bay experience earlier this year (never buy a car on e-bay, duh and mental head slap - although in my defense it was a very pretty '78 Camaro) and he's also kept me in my mom's 12 year old Saturn with 106,000 miles as I can't afford a new car right now (thanks to the e-bay project car). Warren totally gets it that with the Saturn, I don't want to do any major repairs, but just keep it safe to drive and running. Brake jobs, oil changes, safety checks - totally reasonable. Replace the leaky transmission? Even Warren himself says it's not worth it. Is it safe to still drive it with it oil and transmission fluid leaks, is it ok to keep pouring oil and transmission fluid in it? Warren says yes, the car is safe for just toodling around town (no long road trips) and let's do what we can while I save up for a new car. He called it doing hospice care on the Saturn. Who does that? Well, a guy who is honest and isn't going to insist that I do all sorts of pricey repairs just so he can get paid. Matt and the rest of the guys at Warren's shop are great as well. quick good service -takes the time to explain the problem

Yes, the gas costs much more here than other nearby stations AND Warren recently provided THE best service on my car as I have ever experienced. My 1999 CRV failed its emissions test. Warren spent at least 8-9 hours researching, trouble shooting, making calls to colleagues, etc to try to diagnose the problem. Even after he thought he had figured it out (and told us the repair would be $1,500 + AND he encouraged us to get a second opinion AND still had not charged us a cent for all the work he had already done) he still consulted another mechanic friend who suggested he look in one more place. Long story short, Warren asked us to hold off on the expensive repair so he could check "one more thing". Turns out he found the problem, drove the car himself to the emissions testing lane, where the car passed, and in the end he charged us $400.00 when he could have/should have charged us twice that amount for all the time he spent trouble shooting, etc. Warren is our new "go to" mechanic. He seems to be the epitome of "putting the customer first". Yes, the gas is more expensive...but DO NOT miss this incredibly good repair service and owner just because the gas is high. Buy your gas elsewhere but get your car repaired here! read more
