Es Cendol is a refreshing Indonesian dessert

I'm from the Bay Area where Indonesian food is rare. We've had Medan Kitchen before so we decided to give this place a try. On this trip, we ordered takeout but sat down for dessert. We came on a Saturday evening and there was no wait with just a couple tables with adventurous "bule" (caucasians) getting ready for their delicious meals. The es cendol is unique here in that they don't use the traditional green jelly but what looks like a homemade blue colored jelly. The palm sugar mixed with the shaved ice is very refreshing. I think it's more upscale than Medan kitchen but not by much. Medan Kitchen is a very casual place with more food options. For the food, we ordered nasi bungkus (combination rice goodness), nasi bebek (fried duck and rice), and mie tek tek (traditional fried noodles). My favorite is the nasi bungkus because it has a little bit of everything. They give a side of gudek (jackfruit curry) with the rice, fried chicken, beef empal (fried sliced beef) and spicy sambal. Although menu here is limited, I think they focus on a few good dishes. The duck seems deep fried. It comes with green sambal that compliments it well. My daughter liked it but I'd probably pass on the duck next time as it's a bit gamey for me.

Every dish we ordered was absolutely delicious; truly impressive. This little spot feels like a family-owned place, and you can really taste the authenticity of the Indonesian flavors. The service was also excellent: warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly. Super highly recommended!

Food & service are definitely not up to par. The cha Kwai teow & mee goreng has a charred taste. Cook probably didn't pay attention to the wok. Nasi Kunang w/rendang is edible. It's to-go service only @ most times(see picture). A lot of dishes on the menu were crossed out & not available. I won't waste my time traveling all to way to that part of Alhambra for a meal @Wayang. Food in Medan, Kopitam is so much more superior. Don't waste your time & money here.

I passed by this place many many times. Finally had the chance to give it a try. I was a bit disaappointed with the quality of their Nasi Bungkus. It was packed with a lot of rice however. Chicken was dry and the Beef was so hard to cut. It was quite pricey too for the quality. I'm sorry I probably won't go back.

Authentic delicious Indonesian food, what else is there to say! This restaurant is pretty short staff, I think there was just the waitress and one chef in the back. Expect some wait times because of the lack of staff and they make all the food fresh. Besides that, the food is bomb, I tried out these items. Nasi Bungkus - Tons of rice but everything was so good. Perfectly season and the meats were all very tender. Just a solid dish. (5/5) Nasi Kuning Komplit - The yellow rice was so good. Really good dish with many different items that are all good. You can't go wrong with this dish. (5/5) Service here is easily probably a 3/5 since they are short staffed but food is a 5/5. Support your local restaurants and this place is worth trying if you're open to a longer wait. It wasn't too crowded when I came on Saturday which was great. They do accept credit cards now but they have a 3% added fee. Bring cash/zelle to avoid the extra fees. Parking - There is one hour parking in front ( maybe only 4 - 5 spots) and two hour parking on the sides. Therefore parking is kind of limited.

This was honestly one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. I called to place an order and the woman who answered was completely rude and arrogant. I accidentally said the wrong item at first, and instead of helping me fix it, she snapped that she was busy, told me to check the menu myself, and then hung up the phone on me. I tried ordering online instead, but the website said to call to confirm payment. I called back, and the same person answered again with an angry tone. I still tried to stay polite and asked if she could check whether my order went through. She said she'd "answer later" like she was about to hang up again. When I asked how I was supposed to know if my order went through, she actually said she didnt care shes just busy, completely ignoring my request. She called me back later and said my order didn't go through even though the website said it did. When I told her I was disappointed, she just said, "Yeah, I'm busy today," with zero apology or care. This is absolutely unacceptable. If you can't treat customers with basic respect, you shouldn't be answering the phone. I will never order from here again. Update: 1 day later I originally left a review because of how rude and dismissive the person on the phone was when I tried to place and confirm my order. But now I am even more shocked because after this review, the same person texted me personally and brought up religion, telling me that "Lord Jesus should forgive me for my selfishness." This is completely unprofessional, offensive, and unacceptable for a business. A customer has the right to share an honest experience. If someone cannot handle basic customer service or respect boundaries, they should not be running a business or communicating with customers at all. If she is too busy to take orders or treat people kindly, then she should close temporarily instead of taking it out on customers. Do not blame customers for your bad attitude. I left feedback to help improve service, not to be insulted and lectured. This behavior crosses every line of professionalism.

Wayang is a true hidden gem in Alhambra! I have always wanted to try this place when it was previously Wong Java and finally got a chance this past Wednesday. No other customers were there when we arrived, so we had the whole place to ourselves. There was just one lady working the front (and I think she also cooked our food as well), and she was very nice and took our orders. We ordered nasi kuning komplit, lab satay, and mie goreng. For the month of September, they were doing free lemonade and 15% off, as well as free soup on weekends--check on their Instagram or website for the current deal of the month. The inside of the restaurant is very cute and homey--they have lots of photos on some of the walls and a TV playing Indonesian karaoke. Our food arrived 15 minutes after we ordered because they had to cook it, and everything was super delicious and came out nice and hot. The mie goreng had delicious wok hei/smoky aroma because the noodles were charred perfectly. The lamb satay had a delicious sweet and tangy sauce and was served with lontong (pieces of compressed rice cakes) to dip in the sauce. The nasi kuning komplit had delicious tumeric rice, beef rendang, spicy sambal on a fried egg, fried chicken (which was a little dry), a potato ball, fried tofu, and cucumbers. My husband and sister-in-law were in love with the lamb satay and mie goreng (they said they could each eat a whole plate by themselves), so we will definitely be back for more (and to try their other food)!

Our school is close by so we usually come by here for lunch when we get the chance. This is a pretty small restaurant with good flavors especially if you love spicy and savory. Parking: street parking, I haven't encountered a lack of parking space whenever I came by. Staff is polite and friendly. There may be times your food might take longer than expected and they do mention it by the wall at the counter. Food: I've tried their beef rendang before and that was one of my favorites, and the soup they usually serve as complimentary when you dine in. Today's visit, they didn't have both and I was a bit sad. I did get other dishes and all of them were also really good and tasty. We had the Mie Goreng Udang, Nasi Goreng Beef and Nasi Bangkus. Mie Goreng with shrimp: good dish to share. Even if you have a rice dish I think this is a great addition. Light and smokey flavor with hint of soy sauce and spices. Nasi Goreng beef: this fried rice is really good. One of our go to, this has good amount of beef slices and the flavor is just right! This goes really well with beef rendang and sambal, also add a splash of their sweet soy sauce and it's BOMB. Nasi Bangkus: first time having this dish. There are sweet, savory and very spicy flavors in this. Their greenish/dark brown sambal is VERY SPICY, for me. The red one is the one I can tolerate. The dish had chicken, beef, tofu, egg and jackfruit. A plateful of protein and carbs! I really think this is a good meal to have if you want to try lots of different dishes for the price of one. Sadly I didn't have the spicy/sour soup they would offer back then, it would help elevate the dishes. Good spot to try Indonesian food if you're interested!

Been coming where before they changed the name and I feel like they are stepping up the game with the new branding and marketing! They reduced the menu items for sure, but my favorites are still in the menu like Tempe Mendoan and Ayam Kremes. They offer free (sour) soup, Sayur Asem, every weekend and also home ad Lemonade. Their es teler is legit good but I wouldn't order their Cendol anymore, it needs some improvement in taste and texture. Parking is available in the back as usual or on the side.

This is a little hole in the wall in the outskirts of Alhambra. Food is very authentic. I got the Nasi complete which in Malaysia I would call a Nasi lemak. Very tasty. The sambal was spicy. The Kuey teau goreng was pretty good too. Service was friendly. There's ample street parking.

This is the best Indonesian food I have had in SoCal. As someone who cooks a lot & who prefers making things from scratch, I could immediately tell this place stood out from a lot of other restaurants. The chef makes EVERYTHING from scratch. She makes everything fresh, including using fresh whole spices. It's a one-woman operation. The food is fresh, but good food takes time, so please be patient & come when you have some time to spare. I promise it's worth the wait.

Parking: Got street parking for an hour in front of the restaurant wasn't difficult at all. They're understaffed, but didn't feel like we waited too long for our food. Although, there's 3 parties in the restaurant currently! Ambiance is mom and pop. Has simple Indonesian decor. They offer cassava chips and sprite, Dr. pepper, Diet Coke. Food was so good! We got the chicken satay- it comes in a deliciously rich, slightly sweet, nutty sauce and some rice cakes cubes that I've never had before. Kwetiau goreng udang - tastes like it was properly cooked in a wok. Reminds me of a Thai dish called pad see ew, with the wide flat noodles. But the flavors is different. Love the fried shallots on top. Nasi kuning Komplit This combines the fried chicken, the beef rendang. Comes with this mash potato mixture, cold cucumbers, fried egg with the hot sauce, a fried tofu. The beef rendang was so tender! Curious why this place isn't more popping!

I went today because I was craving for authentic Indonesian Fried Chicken. I was greeted by owner Lily who is a woman restauranteur and chef . She lost her staff so she operates the kitchen and taking the orders herself. The food is comfort food to me - even if the dish is simple, taste is good and you are left wanting more. Formerly Wong Java - the food here is delicious and the owner is amazing, she treats you like family! I lived in Indonesia for 14 years and I can confidently say this is the most authentic Indonesian food in Los Angeles! We had the Ayam Kremes, Ikan Penyet, and Mie Goreng and they were all so good. We stopped by at this restaurant on our way home the day after Christmas. It was in the afternoon and saw some people were still eating. They were short staff but the owner was willing to take our order even though they were supposed to close in the afternoon. We ordered Nasi Bungkus, Ayam goreng kremes, sambel goreng udang pete and Sate Kambing. Everything was authentic and delicious! We even got some Extra Mendoan Tempe for free! The owner accidentally made it for us ( we did not order it but the owner refused when we offered to pay). So if you are craving some authentic Indonesian Food please do not hesitate to stop by. They also sell some Indonesian snacks or crackers. We bought Rempeyek Kacang and Rempeyek Teri. Delicious! Thank you. read more

I didn't take a picture of our food because was too busy eating. We ordered Soto Betawi, Sayur Asem ayam goreng, Sate Ayam, Ayam geprek, Nasi goreng ayam & tempe mendoan. And I've been eating here many times before. What makes Wayang different from other Indonesian restaurants? The authenticity of home cooking. If you're looking for the place that reminds you of home or your mom's or grandma's cooking, Wayang is where to go. We came here last Friday night with some gfs. It was empty, but the food did not disappoint! We ordered family style to share- combination fried rice, fried flat noodles, and of course, the chicken satay sticks. Yummy! This was my first time at a halal Indonesian restaurant, and I must say, I shall return. Warning: even if you ask for medium spicy, it's WAY spicy. So next time I'm asking for mild. This food was amazing!!! We got the fried rice, fried chicken, and the watercress. Soooo freaken good even for takeout and as leftovers. The food is flavorful, garlicky, spicy, in so many different layers and ways its magical. This is a must try place. The people there are so genuinely nice considerate human beings. I cant wait to go back for dine-in whenever the 'rona goes away. My one complaint is that they "proudly serve alkaline water." They make their tea with it which ruins the tea and makes it literally and figuratively basic... So unless you actually like that weird battery taste in your beverage skip the water, tea, and ice. Call ahead for speedy order pick up. Say please and thank you and tip well. read more

We didn't get a chance to take picture of the food because were too busy to eat We ordered Soto Betawi, Sayur Asem, Ayam Goreng, Sate Ayam and Soda Gembira. Nothing was left + we were so stuffed. I've personally tried the Kangkung Belacan & Cah Toge ikan asin, oh man remind me of home. If you miss Indonesian food, there many places to choose. But if you miss Indonesian food that reminds you of home, Wayang is the only place to go. It'd be better to pre order your food prior arrival for better enjoyable dining time. semangat!!! read more

The fried rice here is pretty good... actually some of the best I've had in the San Gabriel area. I wasn't a fan of the other small side dishes but the fried rice is enough for me to come back for sure I like spicy food and I ordered mild.. it was very sufficient, unless you want to toast your taste buds read more

Curious for their dish and since the reviews are ok, so we hit this place! It's actually far from our place, like almost 40 mins! But yes, I am curious! Luckily the place wasn't that crowded when we came, it was quite confusing to find the parking lot, but finally we got it! It's at the back of the restaurant! We did a turn around to realize the spot though! The place is very clean, the restroom is clean and for the moslems they have this prayer room, it's very thoughtful of them! And it's a rare one! Two thumbs up for them! For the food, we order: - Nasi Bungkus, 3,5 Honestly!!!! Why the rice has to be that soggy? maybe it's over cook? The chicken is good though and the meat is so tender! The thing I concern more is the rice...it's too soft. The taste of the meat and chicken is good, the jackfruit curry also taste good, not salty at all! - Tempe Mendoan, 5 It's a must when you visit this place! The chili on the sides, really is awesome! The spice of the Tempe adds it well!!! Seriously this is good! - Siomay Bandung, 4 Eat this with the garlic crackers they sell, it tasted even more yummy! Ask for the chili, mix it and there you go, it is good! - Sayur Asem, 3,5 Yg makan ini bojo, secara bojo vegetarian! Droooppp. Bojo says it's ok lah, so far ok. I didn't taste this though, since I don't really like sayur asem. Anyhow! For the whole experience, I hit for 4*. We ordered the food for delivery, and it was absolutely delicious! I've had their food before -specifically their Beef Rendang when I'm too lazy to make it myself and it tastes just like home. I was motivated to write a review because I saw some so called "Elite" person only leave 3 stars. Well, I LOVE that it is family run, as when you walk in it feels like I'm back in Indonesia. You either get it or you don't (clearly this so called "Elite" yelper doesn't get it, and it's a terrible thing to do to a business when you've enjoyed the food) Full disclosure, we are Dutch Indonesian, and my Mum in particular is INCREDIBLY picky when it comes to her favoured "Gado Gado". She loved it. Since they are stuck here and can't go back, I foresee this being a regular (I'm grateful as it means I don't have to do it) read more

This place has potential to do better but business is hard post pandemic. The chef was a Lone Ranger today without any helping hand. Order and payment were all done online. Chef told us that she will convert to just take out soon. Food was ok to good. But sadly service is just not there. read more

The is definitely a hidden gem! I dropped off my car for window tinting, and was walking around for food. I found this place and wanted to give it a try~ since I am not that hungry, I ordered a pempak (savory fish cake in vinegar sauce). It tasted amazing! It was a little leaning toward the spicy side, but I can handle it. The outer layer is crispy, and inner layer is chewy and soft! Love it. The owners talked to me, and they are very friendly! I've never had Indonesian food at a restaurant before, only at my friend's house. The restaurant was so warm when we walked in, but I'm glad they turned on the AC once we sat down. The water they gave us had no ice in there. LOL. Anyways, we ordered the potato appetizer (Perkedel). It is like a fried mashed potato ball with good flavor; it was a little too salty though. We both ordered the Nasi Padang Bungkus- rice with one fried chicken drumstick, beef with red chili sauce, green chili sauce, yellow curry with one boiled egg and artichoke all on a huge leaf. My BF said compared to other places, this one doesn't give you a lot of meat but a lot more rice. I thought the proportion of rice to meat was off as well. They want you to fill up on rice! I wish there was more sauce on my rice as well. I've heard other places actually wrap everything inside a leaf when its cooking. It gives it more flavor. It was a good experience but I wouldn't come back. Time to try other Indonesian restaurants! read more

Finally tried this place and i wish i came sooner! Ordered F3 and F4 (Nasi Kuning and Nasi Bungkus), everything tasted super authentic, the fried chicken, beef rendang, and dendeng were SO YUMMY. | Rating: 4.9/5 | * Parking: Not bad, has room time in and time out. If you go during non-rush hours you should be fine. Store is quite hard to find because of small sign. But you'll be fine hopefully! * Restaurant: Atmosphere is nice. Calm textures with cleaned area. Room for a family gathering, great for a date! The employees, the family we met who runs the restaurant, is quite helpful and sweet. They explain the items as much as they can. Their efforts of speaking English and being communicative is very nice. You can see part of the kitchen from dining area. I went to Bali before the pandemic and fell in love with the country, the people, and most of all the food! I took a cooking class while I was there thinking that I would make Indonesian food at home, but who am I kidding? It would take me forever to find all the ingredients. Three years later, I come across this little restaurant owned by a lovely lady named Lily, who is also the chef. The food was just as good as what I ate in Bali, if not better! The fried chicken is simply amazing!! The crust is made from scratch with spices that she spent countless hours grinding up. The Nasi Goreng Abang and Nasi Bungkus kept my taste buds dancing. If you like spicy food, this place can definitely make you sweat! After dinner, Lily came out to greet us. We immediately felt the love and passion she has for cooking. Lily tells us that she had just taken over this restaurant and is in the process of changing the name. This is not a fancy place, but it is a true gem. Great food made by Lily, who is the queen of the place: owner, chef, and PR. She comes to your table, chats, and talks about her job, the place, the food, her country. All seasoned by her wonderful energy. All the dishes we tried were excellent, and while there we noticed that all the other customers were Indonesian. They were all talking to Lily in their native language: they've found here the true flavors from home! Just Lily and Edward, the young waiter, make you feel at home, happy and well-fed. I've been craving Indonesian food for the longest time and was finally able to satisfy my craving by trying out Wong Java House! There is a small parking lot in the back, but there is plenty of street parking on Valley and the cross street. Wong Java House is a hole in the wall restaurant that seems to be family owned (the only waiters/cashier seemed to be a husband and wife). I came here to try the beef rendang and nasi bungkus, and unfortunately was pretty disappointed by the dishes. The flavor just wasn't there. However, I really enjoyed the chicken satay! The sauce was so good that I dipped all my chicken dishes with it. My favorite dish was the Kwetiaw Goreng. WARNING!!! Beware of the hidden mandatory 20% tips. Worst experience ever. We came for a Sunday lunch. The restaurant was pretty empty, only 2 parties of customers including us. Food was ok. The problem came with the check. They automatically charged 20% gratuity, AFTER TAX too. We talked to the guy, I believe he's the owner. He insisted there was a 20% tips for 5 people. They should mention it on the menu or post a sign, and inform customer when ordering food. Will never come back again. read more

This place is on the quiet side of Atlantic, the owner told me they are struggling with traffic as well as hire new staff. I've been here few times when it was still Wong Java, ever since the pandemic this side become super quiet. Next door was szechuan impression which they moved to a new location with higher traffic. Down the block we used to have Ritter , my favorite place for gumbo which also closed down. I highly recommend this place, as I've been to Indonesia several times. This place is legit, clean, food taste great and authentic. I love this place Great customer service. Owners are friendly. Yelp has wrong info. This place closed at 7pm. Now called Wayang restaurant. Came here on a Saturday and the place wasn't packed at all. I've never really been to an authentic Indonesian Restaurant, but my bf's family was over so they decided to try this place! We ordered quite a lot and the food was super good! BUT the food took a while (about 30 minutes) to come out. I have a pet peeve when the food doesn't come out at the same time, but each of the dishes came out in 10 minute intervals. I'm the type of person who likes to have everything all at once (i like to take my pictures), but this place didn't meet that. My favorite dish there would have to be the indo-fried rice! Definitely a staple over there. Food was good, but takes a while. Not sure if i would come back?? Maybe will try again! read more

The food wasn't bad but I've had better Indonesian food. The food mostly had a sweet taste to it which I guess is part of the cuisine of this part of Indonesia. The issue I have however is the price. The portions are not worth the prices and we had a party of 5 with 2 kids and 3 adults. We ordered one large bowl of rice and got charged $12. This is the most I've ever paid for a bowl of plain white rice at any Asian restaurant. A chicken entree was $17, it said whole chicken, so I assumed a large portion. What came out was Cornish hen, the size of 2 legs of regular chicken. $11 for 5 small skewers of chicken satay is pricey, and unfortunately the meat seemed weird. Sort of makes you stop and wonder if it's actually chicken. For 3 adults and 2 young kids we paid around $87, which is over $20/person. I'm not sure how that happened, but needless to say, that's the last time I go here. read more

We are a new management under new owners. We had our grand opening celebration on November 6th, 2016. Anything before that (including reviews) was related to the previous management. We had a little renovation on the interior, changed the menu, and the look of Wong Java House. We do take out order and credit cards payment, and also catering. Halal is our promise to the customers, and we are authentic Indonesian Cuisine.

In the most convoluted sequence of restaurant occupancy in the annals of Chinese restaurants in the United States, Noodle King has supplanted Rice Hero/Hero's Kitchen/In Joy Lunch in Alhambra in the space formerly occupied by a different restaurant named Noodle King in the 1980s and 1990s. There's a lot to explain here. I used the compound name for the previous occupant because the name on the front entrance was Rice Hero, the back entrance said Hero's Kitchen and the digital menus said In Joy Lunch. I say the old restaurant was supplanted, not replaced, because the old restaurant sort of still hangs around, with a tiny sheet of paper with all 3 old names taped to the front door, and many old dishes still on the menu. Why the three names I don't know. In Joy Lunch had been a popup that operated during lunch hour serving Dongbei food in a space in YYDS Fried Strings in Rosemead. In Joy Lunch then struck out on their own last year with this space in Alhambra, adding the new names. The old Noodle King had been a Taiwanese noodle fixture before moving out in 2003. Since the new Noodle King also serves some of the Rice Hero/Hero's Kitchen/In Joy Lunch items, the same name seems to be just a coincidence. But despite holdover menu items the staff clearly say they're a new restaurant, with the Noodle King himself greeting you at the front entrance and the signage in both front and back now say Noodle King.

I'm not a stranger to bringing food home for another meal. *Steamed Mini Buns - juicy with flavorful pork filling, adequate skin thickness, good size buns *Stir-Fried Noodles with pork - best dish out of the 3, good balance between pork, veggies, and noodles, mild spice level was perfect, portions were reasonable for the price *Lamb Noodles Soup - great amount of lamb and noodles, lamb was tender, noodles were a tad mushy on the edge... they need to be firmer, soup was savory *Jasmine Green Tea with honey - good size cup, tea was a bit bitter, probably needs more honey Food came out steaming hot and timely. Staff and service were wonderful. Yan, the server, was patient and helpful. He did an amazing job working the entire floor by himself. Thank you Yan! Highly recommend this place for their pan-dried and soup noodles. I would come back for more pan-fried noodles and try their pan-fried dumplings. I have had ones in previous visits that the beef was chewy, not tender. You have a choice of regular noodles or hand torn noodles. Hand torn noodles are more filling since the noodles are much thicker than the regular noodles. They are both good. It is a matter of preference. The minced pork with noodles (aka Jia Jiang mien) is also good. For this visit, I did not order dumplings. But their dumplings are usually good. The service is adequate but don't expect good service.

Great authentic Indonesian food. Worth to try. I understand that they are under new management and they are trying to improve the quality of their service as I was able to talk to their staff. Rujak Cingur is definitely must-order food to me every time I go there. It's different than just a regular meal. It has veggies and fruit and meat on the same plate.. spicy and rich! I can't describe it but if u love Asian food, you might want to try this. I tried a lot of their menu and so far I am happy. I also tried their Durian juice. I will definitely come back. read more

Was working in the area today and had been told to try it, so today was the day. I took some bungkus for my husband, soto ayam and kangkung. i had the nasi padang for lunch, the beef belado and fried chicken was very nice, the other sides were ok, could have done with some tempe goreng or similar. I also tried the prekedel, ok, not the best i have ever had. will certainly go back when i am next working in the area, but will stick with my west LA indonesian place on a more regular basis. read more

The resto only serve halal and NO MSG! They use grass-fed beef and they do everything from scratch! The owner believe, the food is the medicine for the body, so never use store bought instant seasoning/spice. It's only Indonesian's tongue can really taste how authentic it is. Wong Java House is my favorite Indonesian Restaurant. Most of the food are to my taste. I eat at this restaurant almost every day. The services are very friendly. And it is easily located along the wide road - at the corner of Valley Boulevard and Raymond in the City of Alhambra. I would highly recommend you to try this restaurant. read more
