Es Cendol is a refreshing Indonesian dessert

I'm from the Bay Area where Indonesian food is rare. We've had Medan Kitchen before so we decided to give this place a try. On this trip, we ordered takeout but sat down for dessert. We came on a Saturday evening and there was no wait with just a couple tables with adventurous "bule" (caucasians) getting ready for their delicious meals. The es cendol is unique here in that they don't use the traditional green jelly but what looks like a homemade blue colored jelly. The palm sugar mixed with the shaved ice is very refreshing. I think it's more upscale than Medan kitchen but not by much. Medan Kitchen is a very casual place with more food options. For the food, we ordered nasi bungkus (combination rice goodness), nasi bebek (fried duck and rice), and mie tek tek (traditional fried noodles). My favorite is the nasi bungkus because it has a little bit of everything. They give a side of gudek (jackfruit curry) with the rice, fried chicken, beef empal (fried sliced beef) and spicy sambal. Although menu here is limited, I think they focus on a few good dishes. The duck seems deep fried. It comes with green sambal that compliments it well. My daughter liked it but I'd probably pass on the duck next time as it's a bit gamey for me.

Every dish we ordered was absolutely delicious; truly impressive. This little spot feels like a family-owned place, and you can really taste the authenticity of the Indonesian flavors. The service was also excellent: warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly. Super highly recommended!

Food & service are definitely not up to par. The cha Kwai teow & mee goreng has a charred taste. Cook probably didn't pay attention to the wok. Nasi Kunang w/rendang is edible. It's to-go service only @ most times(see picture). A lot of dishes on the menu were crossed out & not available. I won't waste my time traveling all to way to that part of Alhambra for a meal @Wayang. Food in Medan, Kopitam is so much more superior. Don't waste your time & money here.

I passed by this place many many times. Finally had the chance to give it a try. I was a bit disaappointed with the quality of their Nasi Bungkus. It was packed with a lot of rice however. Chicken was dry and the Beef was so hard to cut. It was quite pricey too for the quality. I'm sorry I probably won't go back.

Authentic delicious Indonesian food, what else is there to say! This restaurant is pretty short staff, I think there was just the waitress and one chef in the back. Expect some wait times because of the lack of staff and they make all the food fresh. Besides that, the food is bomb, I tried out these items. Nasi Bungkus - Tons of rice but everything was so good. Perfectly season and the meats were all very tender. Just a solid dish. (5/5) Nasi Kuning Komplit - The yellow rice was so good. Really good dish with many different items that are all good. You can't go wrong with this dish. (5/5) Service here is easily probably a 3/5 since they are short staffed but food is a 5/5. Support your local restaurants and this place is worth trying if you're open to a longer wait. It wasn't too crowded when I came on Saturday which was great. They do accept credit cards now but they have a 3% added fee. Bring cash/zelle to avoid the extra fees. Parking - There is one hour parking in front ( maybe only 4 - 5 spots) and two hour parking on the sides. Therefore parking is kind of limited.

This was honestly one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. I called to place an order and the woman who answered was completely rude and arrogant. I accidentally said the wrong item at first, and instead of helping me fix it, she snapped that she was busy, told me to check the menu myself, and then hung up the phone on me. I tried ordering online instead, but the website said to call to confirm payment. I called back, and the same person answered again with an angry tone. I still tried to stay polite and asked if she could check whether my order went through. She said she'd "answer later" like she was about to hang up again. When I asked how I was supposed to know if my order went through, she actually said she didnt care shes just busy, completely ignoring my request. She called me back later and said my order didn't go through even though the website said it did. When I told her I was disappointed, she just said, "Yeah, I'm busy today," with zero apology or care. This is absolutely unacceptable. If you can't treat customers with basic respect, you shouldn't be answering the phone. I will never order from here again. Update: 1 day later I originally left a review because of how rude and dismissive the person on the phone was when I tried to place and confirm my order. But now I am even more shocked because after this review, the same person texted me personally and brought up religion, telling me that "Lord Jesus should forgive me for my selfishness." This is completely unprofessional, offensive, and unacceptable for a business. A customer has the right to share an honest experience. If someone cannot handle basic customer service or respect boundaries, they should not be running a business or communicating with customers at all. If she is too busy to take orders or treat people kindly, then she should close temporarily instead of taking it out on customers. Do not blame customers for your bad attitude. I left feedback to help improve service, not to be insulted and lectured. This behavior crosses every line of professionalism.

Wayang is a true hidden gem in Alhambra! I have always wanted to try this place when it was previously Wong Java and finally got a chance this past Wednesday. No other customers were there when we arrived, so we had the whole place to ourselves. There was just one lady working the front (and I think she also cooked our food as well), and she was very nice and took our orders. We ordered nasi kuning komplit, lab satay, and mie goreng. For the month of September, they were doing free lemonade and 15% off, as well as free soup on weekends--check on their Instagram or website for the current deal of the month. The inside of the restaurant is very cute and homey--they have lots of photos on some of the walls and a TV playing Indonesian karaoke. Our food arrived 15 minutes after we ordered because they had to cook it, and everything was super delicious and came out nice and hot. The mie goreng had delicious wok hei/smoky aroma because the noodles were charred perfectly. The lamb satay had a delicious sweet and tangy sauce and was served with lontong (pieces of compressed rice cakes) to dip in the sauce. The nasi kuning komplit had delicious tumeric rice, beef rendang, spicy sambal on a fried egg, fried chicken (which was a little dry), a potato ball, fried tofu, and cucumbers. My husband and sister-in-law were in love with the lamb satay and mie goreng (they said they could each eat a whole plate by themselves), so we will definitely be back for more (and to try their other food)!

Our school is close by so we usually come by here for lunch when we get the chance. This is a pretty small restaurant with good flavors especially if you love spicy and savory. Parking: street parking, I haven't encountered a lack of parking space whenever I came by. Staff is polite and friendly. There may be times your food might take longer than expected and they do mention it by the wall at the counter. Food: I've tried their beef rendang before and that was one of my favorites, and the soup they usually serve as complimentary when you dine in. Today's visit, they didn't have both and I was a bit sad. I did get other dishes and all of them were also really good and tasty. We had the Mie Goreng Udang, Nasi Goreng Beef and Nasi Bangkus. Mie Goreng with shrimp: good dish to share. Even if you have a rice dish I think this is a great addition. Light and smokey flavor with hint of soy sauce and spices. Nasi Goreng beef: this fried rice is really good. One of our go to, this has good amount of beef slices and the flavor is just right! This goes really well with beef rendang and sambal, also add a splash of their sweet soy sauce and it's BOMB. Nasi Bangkus: first time having this dish. There are sweet, savory and very spicy flavors in this. Their greenish/dark brown sambal is VERY SPICY, for me. The red one is the one I can tolerate. The dish had chicken, beef, tofu, egg and jackfruit. A plateful of protein and carbs! I really think this is a good meal to have if you want to try lots of different dishes for the price of one. Sadly I didn't have the spicy/sour soup they would offer back then, it would help elevate the dishes. Good spot to try Indonesian food if you're interested!

Been coming where before they changed the name and I feel like they are stepping up the game with the new branding and marketing! They reduced the menu items for sure, but my favorites are still in the menu like Tempe Mendoan and Ayam Kremes. They offer free (sour) soup, Sayur Asem, every weekend and also home ad Lemonade. Their es teler is legit good but I wouldn't order their Cendol anymore, it needs some improvement in taste and texture. Parking is available in the back as usual or on the side.

This is a little hole in the wall in the outskirts of Alhambra. Food is very authentic. I got the Nasi complete which in Malaysia I would call a Nasi lemak. Very tasty. The sambal was spicy. The Kuey teau goreng was pretty good too. Service was friendly. There's ample street parking.

This is the best Indonesian food I have had in SoCal. As someone who cooks a lot & who prefers making things from scratch, I could immediately tell this place stood out from a lot of other restaurants. The chef makes EVERYTHING from scratch. She makes everything fresh, including using fresh whole spices. It's a one-woman operation. The food is fresh, but good food takes time, so please be patient & come when you have some time to spare. I promise it's worth the wait.

Parking: Got street parking for an hour in front of the restaurant wasn't difficult at all. They're understaffed, but didn't feel like we waited too long for our food. Although, there's 3 parties in the restaurant currently! Ambiance is mom and pop. Has simple Indonesian decor. They offer cassava chips and sprite, Dr. pepper, Diet Coke. Food was so good! We got the chicken satay- it comes in a deliciously rich, slightly sweet, nutty sauce and some rice cakes cubes that I've never had before. Kwetiau goreng udang - tastes like it was properly cooked in a wok. Reminds me of a Thai dish called pad see ew, with the wide flat noodles. But the flavors is different. Love the fried shallots on top. Nasi kuning Komplit This combines the fried chicken, the beef rendang. Comes with this mash potato mixture, cold cucumbers, fried egg with the hot sauce, a fried tofu. The beef rendang was so tender! Curious why this place isn't more popping!

I was really craving Indonesian food and decided to check out this place. We ordered kangkung balacan, ayam penyet, sate ayam, rice and es cendol. All of them were delicious and reminded me of the food I had back home, although they do lean on the sweet side. The selection of sambals were a great addition. Price is a bit steep but overall, we had a great experience and would love to comeback. read more

I came here after church with a party of 11 and was happy that they were able to move the tables around to seat us all comfortably. I've been loving Gado Gado salads (that peanut sauce) so I had to get that. This Gado Gado was a little spicier than that past ones I've had but still tasty. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food too. The menu is quite extensive and they have specials on the wall. Service was friendly and fairly quick. All of our food was brought out around the same time which was nice. There's gratuity added on for parties larger than 5. Parking can be a little tricky to find. Check out Wong Java if you're in the mood for Indonesian food. read more

This place is a hidden gem. The food was fantastic and full of flavor. Everything tasted so fresh and authentic. The prices were very good for the potions you get as well. Staff was super friendly! The food here is delicious and the portions are great for sharing. Based on my Indonesian friend's recommendation, we got Rendang (beef), Nasi Kuning (yellow rice), and mie tek tek (a noodle bowl). All three dishes were yummy. Expect the service to be really slow or nonexistent during busy times though even though the staff are really nice. Don't be shy to go to the counter to ask for a box or pay instead of waiting for someone to come by. read more

Delicious Indonesian food. Located off the Main Street and parking on the street or in the back. Service is attentive and friendly. Bathrooms are clean and available to customers. 3/4 instead of 4/4 because our chicken satay wasn't fully cooked and it was super hot inside. Wasn't sure if they were being conservative or if it was broken. It was our first time there and because the lady server was nice we didn't tell her about the uncooked meat. We just left it. Every thing else we got was delicious. Portion and pricing is fair. Would I come again? Maybe :) Mainly came here for the Indonesian halal food. read more

Hubby & I visited this Indonesian restaurant for the first time today. All 3 dishes (gado gado, siomay Bandung, nasi bungkus) are so yummy & authentic. The business is owned & operated by a woman named Lilik who is also the chef, and her cousin Soesilo in charge of the front. We had a lovely conversation with both of them, learning about the history of the restaurant and her story. Apparently she is the 3rd owner, taking it over from the previous owner who is also a blood relative in July last year. Lilik previously worked as personal/private chef for catering and special events. She told us she had the opportunity to work in the events hosted by some well known A-list celebrities. Just like many restaurant business owners, she is struggling with shortage of staff, which threatens the livelihood of her business. Please support this wonderful woman-owned mom & pop authentic Indonesian restaurant so they can thrive If you are in the area, dine in or get some take outs, you will not regret it, her food is burst with multi-layered flavor of South East Asian spices! We will back to try their other top selling dishes like Nasi Sayur Asem Komplit, Bebek goreng (Fried Ducks), Fried chicken. read more

Absolutely delicious food! I came with my friend who's Indonesian and it's some of the best food I've had. The chicken dish (Ayam kremes) falls right off the bone and the seasonings on the dishes are of incredible variety. I was warned in advance to be wary of it being spicy, but I tried it anyways and came to find that it's more flavorful than spicy. It was an overall excellent experience and incredible food! Wow! This place is My dear friend JP introduced me to this place in Alhambra during lockdown, so it was a take out order but was it the best Indonesian food I have ever had! Slowest restaurant in SGV: So this is was originally gonna be a one star review. I hadn't planned on coming but end up here, walked in and ordered 2 dishes - a pressed chicken and an ox tail soup. 20 minutes later and nothing happened. a little hungry I waited for another 5 min and had to ask the waiter/owner what the deal is. He got into this somewhat defensive rant about how this isn't a McDonald nor a Panda Express and his stuff are all cooked slowly, implied that I only know fast food, and how I should've checked out their social media to find out their minimum wait is 30-40 minutes. Taken aback a little by his attitude, and somewhat offended that I am expected to read up social media before heading into a place, I started this review fully intending on giving it a 1 star. But then the food arrived. It's 34 minute wait, but it was delicious. The chicken was very tender and full of flavor. The soup was well cooked and really nothing to complain about. So in the end, based on their food quality this place deserves a 5 star. But I need to dock at least a star for the slowness and rudeness. Yes your restaurant make everything slow and it tastes great, but there's no reason to assume everyone know about your process - a simple "Is this the first time you've been with us?" and "we cook everything halal and the wait time is a little long" BEFORE I ordered food could've smoothed things out considerably. Better yet, put that on your door. In short, this place tastes great, but is SUPER slow. Best option is to look up their menu, order ahead of time and come when the dishes are ready. The owner is a bit of a condescending blow hard (could be a language thing, who knows). Come in with the right expectations and you'll have a good time. read more

Every now and then, I get a craving for Indonesian. While not as ubiquitous as other Asian or Southeast Asian, we are fortunate to have opportunities in Southern California. Wong Java House is located on the busy boulevard, but street side parking is available. Parking is available behind the restaurant, but I prefer to park my Ferrari in a more visible location. The restaurant is clean and appears the husband and wife run this place. The husband waits and the wife cooks. They obviously love cars with various car emblems and gear decorating the area. They clearly have pride in their country with the flags and tapestries abound. The menu is clear and extensive. Photos help you choose. The waiter helps you pick steering you the right way. But he honestly says everything they make is authentic and tasty. All halal as well. (If you have any doubts, they even have their own prayer room.) We tried the usual nasi goreng, etc. Some tempeh. The pressed chicken is recommended, and was well seasoned, but as a bit overcooked for my preference (most Asian places over cook the fish, fowl, and beast). Most the dishes were a bit salty and the heat can be unbearable for the jv. The dishes are made to order so their is a wait. But the time is well spent with good company. With my limited experience in context, I dare say you will have a hard time finding better Indonesian. read more

We came here during a day trip to LA. I'm always wanting Indonesian food in La because I can't get any in San Diego. The closest is LA. I must say Wong Java House was super good! I usually go to a different spot but wanted to try a new one. This is a hidden gem in Alhambra. It's tucked away in a little strip of shops and it's a true no frills, mom and pop kind of place. They make the food to order so expect to wait a little. My boyfriend has never been to an Indonesian restaurant, and he loved it! We got the basics, mie goreng, gado gado, tumeric coconut rice and Ikan goreng. Soooo good! Everything was flavorful and they had three types of Sambal. The staff was super nice. I'll definitely be back--very authentic comfort food for me. Oh also they have cendol and durian milkshakes! read more

I went here twice last week because my first experience was good. Ordered: Es Campur, Nasi Bungkus and Ayam Penyet. Es Campur: Basically Indonesian shaved ice with green jelly, avocado, jackfruit, slices of lychee with rose syrup and condensed milk. I wish they gave me more avocado instead of two tiny pieces. 3.5 stars!! Nasi Bungkus: Rice wrapped in banana leaf with rending (beef curry), jackfruit, chili boiled egg, sweet marinated chicken and spicy string beans. Spicy sauce was poured over the rice before they wrap it. The beef curry was good and a tad sweet. It was pretty good and almost as good as Java Spice's nasi bungkus. I stil prefer Java Spice though. 4 stars!! Ayam Penyet: Fried chicken with chili sauce and crispy stuff served on top of stone container. The chicken was good but I couldn't really taste the marinade. 3.5 stars!! Second time around I came with several friends and ordered Ayam Kalasan. Ayam Kalasan: Sweet marinated chicken served with spicy and sour veggie soup. I really missed Java Spice's ayam kalasan when I was eating this. 3.5 stars!! This place is definitely better than Indonesian restaurants in the area such as Indo Café and Little Java. 3.5 stars!! Wong Java is yummylicious!! read more

Nasi bungkus! Yup, I need to do a nasi bungkus list. Not bad. It was pretty good. Nasi bungkus is like several little Christmas presents rolled up in one giant banana leaf. When you unravel the leaf, what you get is meat, curry, egg, rice, chicken and more! All of the ingredients keep their distinct tastes but also work together to make a very flavorful and spicy delight. Nasi bungkus..mmmmm. Thanks Wong Java! read more

The only thing this place is good for is the tempeh mendoan. It's sliced tempeh, battered and fried. Then they toss a handful of chilis in there. You're supposed to eat one bite mendoan, one bite chili. It's delicious when they do it right but sometimes they have off days and it's not nearly seasoned enough. Everything else is mediocre or worse. Nasi bungkus is 80% rice, 2 slices of meat, an egg, 2 pieces of jackfruit. It's really a rip-off. If you want it to taste more delicious ask to sub steamed rice with yellow rice (nasi kuning) or coconut rice (nasi uduk). Steamed veggie plate is sad. Siomay is better in West Covina. Don't even get the stir fry. The butter chicken is nothing like Indo butter chicken. Just stay away from most of the menu. Stick with their appetizers. Pempek is ok but eat it while it's crispy. This indo restaurant is the closest to me but I drive out of my way to the other restaurants unless I want tempeh mendoan. read more

This is a go to place when you want to get Indonesian Egg Noodles, in Indonesian called "Bakmi GM". However, you have to develop the taste for Indonesian Noodles because they are much different than any other Chinese Egg Noodle. However, if you are Indonesian, this is the best place to get "Bakmi GM" beside Bakmi Janthi. Aside from the Indonesian egg noodle, I would recommend their Nasi Kuning, Kangkung Belacan and Sop Buntut. I think, those are their specialties. I have tried so many Indonesian place, but the four dishes mentioned above, a must try compared to other Indonesian restaurant. read more

CHECK YOUR BILL before you pay! We got charged for different prices from the menu prices. Sayur Asem Komplit $10.50, but got charged $13 Mie GM $9, got charged $11 Es Campur $5, got charged $6 When I checked the bill and found that the prices are incorrect. These are not the prices we see on the menu. Then the short hair lady at the cashier brought out another menu with the prices written by a black marker. WoW. They didn't show us that menu and charged us that prices. The cashier lady gave us back $3 from the bill. So she still charged: Sayur Asem Komplit $10.50, but got charged *$11* Mie GM $9, got charged $11 Es Campur $5, got charged $6 Yes. So we have decided not to go there again. Beef rendang, chicken satay and ikan pepes were excellent Chicken satay A, lamb curry B, rojak juhi B, curry puff B, cumi goreng mentega C Love the lontong. They will also change the egg from boiled to fried if you want. Ayam Mee bakso a bit bland but good with Belacan chilli. Lontong polos (rice cake) + sayur lodeh + fried (or boiled) egg + dash of sugar = Singapore lontong! Wong Java House is legit. The food is delicious and authentic. The martabak telur is a standout and the nasi kuning is excellent. Wong Java is a small, unassuming restaurant on Valley Blvd. TBH I would have never found this place if it weren't for my friend's recommendation. I thought the food here was pretty good, not exceptional, but pretty good. I got the fried rice and fried noodles, the noodles was a bit dry and lacking in flavor. It reminded me of the panda express noodles. The rice was better, but I think the highlight was definitely the satay skewers. read more

Established in 2016.

We are a new management under new owners. We had our grand opening celebration on November 6th, 2016. Anything before that (including reviews) was related to the previous management. We had a little renovation on the interior, changed the menu, and the look of Wong Java House. We do take out order and credit cards payment, and also catering. Halal is our promise to the customers, and we are authentic Indonesian Cuisine.

It's shameful, humiliating, and completely unacceptable. What's even more disappointing is that this is a Muslim restaurant. As a fellow Muslim, I'm deeply ashamed to see people treat their guests this way. Respect and good manners should come before demanding tips.

But this isn't the main issue.... The main (issue) surprise: There is an extra 3% credit-card surcharge on top of your bill which isn't noted anywhere as I found out after I got home. When the server came back with their little machine to pay, options were the 'tip' - starting with the usual at 18% so forth, and of course most tend to choose the first option, as I did. Brought my phone up close to device unit using Apple Pay and NFC kicks in! So in short, I paid 21% more on top of my regular bill. Question is, who doesn't use credit cards these days, or was it just another form of surcharge to cover employee health insurance to deter from mentioning? Be aware.

My must orders are the hanger steak breakfast plate, lemon pepper chicken wings chicken, and chicken liver mousse. I also love their soft serve that they make with Straus milk! The ambiance is rather intimate but it does get really busy. Servers are very helpful with recommendations.

Great authentic Indonesian food. Worth to try. I understand that they are under new management and they are trying to improve the quality of their service as I was able to talk to their staff. Rujak Cingur is definitely must-order food to me every time I go there. It's different than just a regular meal. It has veggies and fruit and meat on the same plate.. spicy and rich! I can't describe it but if u love Asian food, you might want to try this. I tried a lot of their menu and so far I am happy. I also tried their Durian juice. I will definitely come back. read more

Was working in the area today and had been told to try it, so today was the day. I took some bungkus for my husband, soto ayam and kangkung. i had the nasi padang for lunch, the beef belado and fried chicken was very nice, the other sides were ok, could have done with some tempe goreng or similar. I also tried the prekedel, ok, not the best i have ever had. will certainly go back when i am next working in the area, but will stick with my west LA indonesian place on a more regular basis. read more

The resto only serve halal and NO MSG! They use grass-fed beef and they do everything from scratch! The owner believe, the food is the medicine for the body, so never use store bought instant seasoning/spice. It's only Indonesian's tongue can really taste how authentic it is. Every bite is so authentic and amazing. I highly recommend this place. read more

Wong Java House is my favorite Indonesian Restaurant. Most of the food are to my taste. I eat at this restaurant almost every day. The services are very friendly. And it is easily located along the wide road - at the corner of Valley Boulevard and Raymond in the City of Alhambra. I would highly recommend you to try this restaurant. read more
