Went to Wayside for lunch on a Friday. The restaurant was mildly busy and we were greeted and seated promptly. We sat in a booth, the facility seemed clean and updated. The staff was friendly and courteous. I ordered a large orange juice with a strip steak, two eggs, home fries and toast. My wife ordered eggs and toast with coffee. Our meals were served in a reasonable amount of time as ordered. I expected my steak to be of marginal quality but was pleasantly surprised. It exceeded my expectations completely. My recollection was that the food was often salty, but this was not the case today. My wife's meal was equally good. For an inexpensive meal (each under $20) I thought it was an extremely good value. It has gone up at least one notch in my estimation. We are likely to return often, it seems a higher quality experience than the franchise diners around the suburbs at a lower cost. read more

Let's get one thing straight. I don't like nor try to pick a part a small business, but Wayside has gone downhill for about a decade now. What could improve? Almost everything tbh, Our family used to go here so often. We'd bring extended family from out of town consistently. But a couple years prior to Covid I started to notice a decline in the quality of the meals. I thought maybe they were just having issues with the vendors. Perhaps in between what they had and finding a new one or two. Then Covid hit and this is when it really hit me that, that wasn't the case. Because there was no improvement, in fact I think it got worse. And I get it Covid messed us all up and especially the small business'. Even more so in the food industry the most. My most recent trip was a couple/few weeks ago and nothing has really changed. The breakfast dish I ordered was oily and greasy. The cheese that was added was an off brand of Kraft singles. Just disgusting. I think Kraft singles are horrible in the first place. I forced myself to eat it to show respect. The quantity seemed extremely slim too. The price, (again I get covid) but $5 or so for 3 stripes of bacon that are as thin as a napkin is completely unsatisfactory. We've been going to Wayside for over 50 years...from back in the 70s for a late-night burger in a basket to post-garage sailing (sale-ing?) breakfasts on Saturday mornings. Today we've decided that we'll no longer go there. The food has always been okay, but not great. It's funny, but you can count on your breakfast toast to be toasted on one side only...kind of weird, but not any reason to boycott the place. Today, we seated ourselves and were greeted by MAGA opinions on Fox News on the TV. Okay, you're conservative, but why alienate half of your clientele with that drivel? Went to Wayside today, 3\29\26. Ordered a bacon,cheese omelet that the menu stated came with home fries and toast for $12.99. The bill came and there was a .61 cent charge for home fries. We asked the waitress and she said no the home fries are extra. Also she said there is a difference between paying with cash or credit. Ok that's fair. But then she said if you add it up it comes out to the same thing. Which made absolutely no sense. Yes, it's only .61 cents but it is false advertisement. I'll stick with Apollos. So we have past this place many times but we won a gift certificate and decided to come on a rainy Saturday for dinner. Employees were awesome and very friendly they all work together well The food was a amazing and homemade. Great portions and delicious. I had a salad and hubby had beef barley soup. I should have opted for the soup. It was really good. My hubby had the lasagna and he said tasted just like mine but better parmed. Although our waitress was entirely a sweetheart, she could not get our simple order right. I ordered an egg salad sandwich on white with a side salad. She asked me what bread, I said white, and she kept saying rye. Even with several corrections, I still got rye. I despise rye, so scraped my sandwich innards onto the salad and ate it that way. The side salad was skimpy, just lettuce, one slice of tomato and a few croutons. And the egg salad tasted store-bought, definitely nothing to write home about. My husband had the sausage platter dinner. He asked for mashed potatoes, and had the same issue with the waitress not getting it right after a few clarifications. He ended up with one small whole boiled potato on his plate. The sauerkraut was inedible, completely dry and sour in a bad way. The sausage was pitiful. It was two sad links that were boiled, no grill marks or snap to them at all. He was so disappointed in his meal, he got up and left shortly after it came out, which is entirely unlike him. It really was that sad of a plate. My husband had an iced tea and I had water, and the bill came to $27. I suppose that is reasonable for these days, but considering we didn't like anything we ate, it was still a waste of $27 for us. Perhaps we just ordered the wrong things and got a kind but inaccurate waitress, as others in the restaurant seemed happy. Even so, we likely won't return. We come here all the time for Friday Fish and today was no different. First off, the staff is fantastic and very attentive. We were able to pick our seats, have our menus and drink order put down within a minute. Every member of staff we saw said hello and asked about our day and the waitress we had was on top of our refills. One of the other women working stopped by and said hello too; they're really the friendliest staff. Second, the food. I had the beer battered fish and chips with extra macaroni salad and my partner had the shrimp basket with a chef salad. The portion sizes are always worth the money and they're really good about substituting the sides. The Friday beer battered fish is my favorite in the area and it always tastes good. The shrimp basket looked really good too and for ten dollars it was a generous amount of shrimp and fries. We come here a lot because it's a nice local restaurant that's super convenient to go and it's always great. Even their desserts are well crafted at a good price. read more

This review is primarily based on their take out option. I was searching for a take-out fish fry close to home and decided to give Wayside a call. For $13.50 you get a decent sized cornmeal crusted fish fry, crinkle cut fries, tuna macaroni salad, coleslaw and French bread. I told them to hold the coleslaw, and they offered to substitute something else or do double Mac salad (which I chose)! They said to go to their back entrance and it would be 20 minutes. I showed up after 25, and sure enough, it was packaged up and ready to eat! I was very impressed with their procedure considering Fridays during lent can be nuts. And the fish fry, while not my absolute favorite, was pretty tasty and it hit the spot! read more

I met a friend here yesterday for breakfast. I've been here six other times. I usually only come here for breakfast. Everything is always good, especially the chicken souvlaki. They've remodeled it since I originally started coming here and it looks really nice. My waitress was Tanya and she was great. The coffee is very good here. I ordered the Philly Steak scrambler. It's Philly steak with peppers, onions, and mozzarella cheese with two eggs, home fries, and toast. I didn't want toast so my waitress let me substitute a bagel. I had cream cheese with it. My friend ordered one egg with toast. She asked for a side of bacon and a cinnamon roll. The cinnamon roll was great so I ordered one to go, after we were done eating. With it still being Covid, some restaurants limit your seating time, which this restaurant doesn't do. I was thankful for that. We saw plenty of good reviews and came here. However, the food was disappointing. Yes it is home cooked food if that implies bland food. My garden omlet had boiled carrots and broccoli and American cheese slices (from the wrapper I'm guessing). There was hardly any flavor. My friend's steak scrambler was even worse. The steak was cooked well but still smelled weird. It was bland. Basically it was nothing great! It was packed so I don't know what I'm missing. But we had a terrible experience. read more

First time coming here and felt that the overall quality and quantity for what you pay is good. I ordered the wayside Greek dinner which is Greek chicken served with peppers, onions, tomato over rice with a Greek salad. The Greek dressing was better than another Greek place I frequent but th e chicken wasn't as well seasoned. my fiance ordered the fish fry dinner and he liked it. We also got the Turkey dumpling soup and that was much better than most places. The waitress was friendly but walked away twice while we were not yet done asking for something. She could've just asked "anything else?" There was a hand written sign from the owner to employees within view of several booths that was threatening towards workers. Sign was advising workers to leave room in a cup when filling drinks as to avoid spilling contents on floor and patrons. The sign went on to mention about free refills and if the workers couldn't follow the rules then they could look for a new job elsewhere. I find it distasteful to leave signs like that within public view that threaten its workers. The sign is the reason for a 3 star review instead of a 4 star. read more

Wayside Resturant is the definition of a neighborhood diner. Every time I've been here, the waitresses seem to know the customers and have lengthy conversations with them, and there seem to be lots of regulars who know one another also. It creates an interesting atmosphere, which can sometimes be annoying. My most recent visit, there were people at different tables talking to each other across the Resturant. I found that it was create difficult to have my own conversation with the person sitting accepts the table from me. Additionally, the service can be sub-par due to all the conversation. So other than that, this place is great. The food is always good. The prices are very reasonable. Most recently, I attended this Resturant and had the breakfast special. It was cream cheese stuffed french toast with a side of bacon and coffee included for only $7.49. I thought it was delicious and really wish it was on the menu. read more

Wayside is one of those places that you can pretty much count on as being a place that will give you a decent meal, for a decent price, and more than a decent portion. Nothing exciting, but when you go there, it's one of those places you go to when you're not looking for a dining "experience", but you're hungry and want lots of food (with leftovers), with lots of choices. Have stopped in many times over the last couple years, when in the South Buffalo/Lackawanna area. Have recently added it to our "shoot down for lunch from downtown" list of eating spots. Every day, besides the printed menu (which is extensive), there is a board posted with multiple daily specials. The specials are the kind of things that you'd most likely cook for yourself at home if you had the energy and inclination to cook a good meal. The kind of stuff that would look like a plate of "old fashioned Sunday dinner". The restaurant seems to be a favorite of neighborhood senior citizens. The servers seem to know their customers as regulars. Don't know if they give a senior discount, or if it's just that it can pretty much be counted on that there will be a take home meal of whatever's left over, which is always a perk. All in all, what you'll get from Wayside is stability. The decor is pretty basic, almost dated. But, you're there to eat, right? I've never had anything that I've had a problem with. (I have yet to have ordered any breakfast entrees, which BTW, I think are available all day, unless it's a timed special.) A Friday evening can be quite a wait. There's seating in the hall for those who need it during the wait time. The parking lot is more than adequate. And adding as an afterthought, they have great Texas sauce. Not too sweet, which I've oddly found some places. If my entree includes fries, I get a side of sauce for my fries. One thing I'm not fond of, though, is that when ordering chicken fingers (didn't notice if it applies to wings), it's an extra .79 to have your fingers "dipped" (shaken) in sauce, instead of on the side. I had the Spaghetti Parmesan. It was not only delicious, but huge. I had a doggie bag! It is one of the many Monday specials. This one was $9.99 The Spaghetti is served with a choice of soup or salad. It was a nice, crisp salad, with ranch dressing on the side. The large platter of spaghetti is actually on two platters as one is very hot, holding the pasta, and the bottom, larger platter, presumably to protect the waitresses' hands. One can order extras, such as meatballs or sausages. I am glad i did not choose to add on as the plate of pasta with the meat sauce with the lovely baked Parmesan topping was more than enough. I plan to return to Wayside as I was intrigued by a souvlaki, served to a woman at the next table, looked very appealing. This was my first visit to Wayside Restaurant and I do not regret going there at all. I had trouble making a choice; there were too many options I liked. A nice list of Monday Specials and the regular menu offers many choices. I picked the Philly Cheese Steak and was not disappointed. A nice size sandwich with a good amount of steak, some caramelized onions, melted cheese and a special sauce. It could have been a little warmer, but the taste was great. It came with either fries or Cole Slaw. I attentive.went for the Cole Slaw. That was okay, a little too much mayonnaise for me and it needed pepper to spice it up a bit. The waitress was very nice and attentive. She kept an eye on my coffee and showed up for refills at the right times. Four on the plate, glad I asked for a container because, in a weaker moment, I ordered coconut cream pie. Wow. If Buffalo is the city of no illusions, this place is the restaurant of no illusions. Spotlessly tidy and comfortable, nice servers, great values for honest food. Decades ago this was just a coffee shop, now a very nice spot for a satisfying, hearty meal. So we visited Wayside with 4 adults and 2 kids in the late afternoon on a weekday in early September of 2019. The place maybe had 10 other customers in the restaurant. We came in from Texas a few days earlier and this was a place that everyone could get some type of food with no issues and be happy. I hadn't been to the Wayside in close to 30 years and needless to say it looked exactly the same. Same decor, same tables, same plastic cups, same everything. You can either look that as a positive or a negative, I cast no aspersions either way. The food was good but nothing was great. The menu was normal diner fare but nothing I seen stood out. The Wayside has been there so long I bet they figure why change? And hey, I guess that works for them. I originally gave them 2 stars for the food because it was OK. However, they lost 1 of these stars based on the service we were given. Now when we travel to NY people are a little more direct and to the point which I had to explain to my wife some 20 years ago. Sadly for the most part service people aren't warm and fuzzy like you have down South and that's how it is even in the restaurant business especially if you're a stranger to the place. However, this could have been the worst service I've seen in my 50 years. Sadly we couldn't remember or find our bill to get the name of Little Miss Sunshine. So the waitress we had was extremely rude and had zero people skills. She was on the "princess" for a day kick and it seemed she was put out that she had to be taking care of us that afternoon. When a customer is asking you a question, you don't ignore what they're saying and walk away when they are speaking at you and state to them "I'll be right back"...she did this not once, but twice. I was floored because this behavior went beyond NY normal to just plain F'in rude. Based on her demeanor and attitude, I'm guessing this wasn't the first time she's acted like this. OK "princess" you want to act like a waitress who could care less? Then your tip will get slashed in the end. And let me tell you her tip was greatly affected by this because she was rude to the person paying the entire bill, not once but twice. That person is usually a very generous tipper except when crap like this happens. Career advice for our waitress because I'm sure she'll know who she is if she reads this...get a job on the graveyard shift working alone in some dark cold damp warehouse, it would better suit your stellar people skills. read more

Beautiful little restaurant, not at all what I was expecting beforehand. Waitresses were all wonderful and nice, plus they do their job quickly and expertly. My group tried a little of everything --- the belgium waffle was delectable, my patty melt was hot and oniony and delicious, and the greek souvlaki was amazing with HUGE pieces of tender chicken (though I wish they used some romaine in the salad instead of just generic "bagged iceberg with little bits of carrot" mix). Wayside is South Buffalo's version of Alton's in Cheektowaga. The restaurant has been around for hundreds of years (not really). Well, according to my husband's grandfather, this restaurant was there before he got married and it was sixty years ago. I came here twice so far. On my first visit, I ordered fish fry which was ok. The batter was crispy from the outside but the fish fell off the batter when I cut it. French fries was a bit soggy and the coleslaw was acceptable. I would go somewhere else for the fish fry. On my second visit, I came here with Gramps and I ordered roast beef, mashed potatoes with gravy, and the side of corn. I really liked the roast beef, it was tender and tasty. I've been to many family restaurants and it can be a hit or miss when I order anything with gravy. Either it is way too salty or no taste at all. This dish was just perfect for a cold day and so comforting. If you don't like gravy, ask for it on the side because they're very generous. All dinner comes with soup or salad and dinner roll. I chose the chicken pot pie soup instead of salad, which was very enjoyable, and it reminded me of lemon chicken rice soup. My Gramps ordered hamburger with a side of mashed potatoes as well. He ordered the burger medium and pink in the middle (I like burgers that are well done and no pink at all). I didn't try the burger and Gramps seemed to enjoy his meal. This restaurant is casual and simple. Also, they offer comfort food such as grilled cheese, pot roast, pork chops, corned beef, varieties of sandwiches and melts. I've never tried their pasta dishes such as spaghetti and lasagna. Most of the dinner cost about $9 or so, except for some specials. The service was decent, our waitress wasn't too fond with Gramps' dirty jokes. Overall, everything was ok for a casual dining-after doctor's appointment-kinda day. I am so done with this place. I use to come here years ago with my sister for breakfast and it was good. Now I have been back three times in the last six months with a friend who lives near by. EVERY time it eas bad. Food cold each time. Out of menu items each time. Tonight I ordered a appetizer which of course they were out if but yet it was on my bill. I had to ask for my sausage dinner to be heated as it was cold as usual. It took ten minutes to get my plate back still only barely warmed. My friend ordered the broiled fish which was rubbery and had such limp skin it came off in tiny pieces. My friend doesn't like to complain and ate less then half of the meal. The only time I come here are in moments of complete desperation. It's not far from my house, and when I get locked out of the house, it kills time for an hour or so until help arrives. The food and service and general environment of this place leaves MUCH to be desired. It feels like Nothing about this place has changed for 30 years. From wait staff, to food, to restaurant upgrades. In general it will get you through a tight spot, and the food is reasonable and quick, albeit not memorable in any way shape or form. The overall standard is just not high for this place but it is usually jammed up with customers...most of the "faithful" variety who have likely come here for years as part of a ritual.
