Needed to drop something off at the UPS store and was in the mood for garlic noodles. I got the Chicken Garlic Noodle Plate and it was amazing. Generous portion of both chicken and noodles. Very disappointed with a recent visit. They mistreated my wife and 3 year old son -- tossed out their food when they were using the restroom and still had their personal belongings at the table. Right before they used the restroom, we asked the waitress for a Togo box. So with personal belongings, an empty Togo box and full plates of food on the table, the wait staff tossed everything away. It's an amazing local spot with amazing deals and the menu has a good variety from rice plates, to vietnamese dishes, to baked plates, to noodle soups. It's been here on Ocean Avenue for years, but I only just recently stopped by for the first time. It really took me a while to scan the menu since it ran the gamut from breakfast specials to chow fun. I decided to try the $11.95 Grilled Pork Garlic Noodle Plate. It was quite a huge plate with a big pile of garlic noodles to go with the marinated pork sprinkled with sesame seeds. If you have a group, and there is no consensus on what to eat then Jo Jo is the place for you. Easy parking on the side street Capital Avenue, and plenty of seating both inside and out. The staff here is pleasant, and they serve up what I think of as the San Francisco version of Diner Food, with a mix of Classic American, and Asian Comfort Foods. The price point is gentle on the wallet, and the food home style. They also offer great breakfast, and sandwich specials, a decent Laksa, and they make a nice milk tea. My meal was a plate of tasty Dim Sum (Buns & Siu Mai) and a Fruit Freeze though I was very sated with the plate so the Cup went into the Freezer. If you're with a group of hAngry people who can't decide what to get for brunch, Jojo's Cafe is the place to be. From Chinese, Vietnamese to American classic breakfast items, they have it all. Now I can't say food is excellent, everything we ordered was average tasting but I like how fast their service is. You place your order at the counter, go take a seat and food starts coming to your table in 10 minutes or so. The interior isn't bad at all either. It exudes some sort of industrial, modern contemporary vibe, like a juxtaposition to the very traditional food they serve. Indoor and outdoor dining is available too. The menu is very diverse. However, I love laksa so it was a no brainer to me. It comes with an extra bowl of laksa soup, and a side of bean sprouts, thai basil and jalapeno pepper - exactly what you expect to get when you're getting pho. The extra soup is necessary as the laksa bowl itself is loaded with toppings and the rice noodles keep on absorbing the soup. The grilled pork banh mi was just okay, you can't beat the price though at $4. The pancakes were great for kids, the nephew loved it. The wonton soup was oddly sour? It had like 10 wontons or more though. Overall, I thought food was 3/5. I'm bumping it to 4 considering the fast and friendly service, affordability, and variation. read more

I had breakfast at Jo Jo's Chinese Restaurant on Ocean Avenue a couple of days ago. I'm usually wary of Chinese-American breakfasts, since they are often unclear on the concept, but I'm willing to give a new place a try. Bad call in this case.  Their only vegetarian option was a vegetarian omelet, $11.50. The menu says it's a cheese omelet with "all these vegetables" and lists things like mushrooms, bell peppers and onions. I asked for the cheese omelet with mushrooms only. The cashier said $13.50. I said the menu says $11.50. She said, "Mushrooms two dollah." I didn't see any prices for individual vegetables on the menu, at least not in English.  I asked for butter on the side. The patty was as hard as a rock. I asked the waitress if they kept the butter in the freezer (though I already knew the answer). She said yes. I told her that made the butter too hard and to keep it in the refrigerator, but it was like talking to a block of frozen butter.  When breakfast arrived they followed the latest trend of one slice of toast cut in half. Gone are the days when customers got two slices of toast, I guess.  But the oddest thing was that the omelet had plenty of fresh sliced mushrooms but no cheese. I mentioned it to the waitress who went back to ask the cook. She came back to say the cook DID put cheese in it. I again showed the waitress that there was no cheese. She said, "Okay, don't go crazy!" (I was very calm) and went to the cook again and came back to say the cook can add "more" cheese. I said it was okay.   I've learned my lesson. read more

This has been one of my favorite spots to go to when in doubt about getting something fast and good. When arriving to the restaurant, you'll be greeted immediately. You'll have to place your order at the counter before sitting at your choice of any available tables. Once seated the wait person will bring out your food. I like the fact that when you order your food, it will be prepared and ready to be served in less than 10-15mins. The variety of food you can expect to choose from are of Chinese or Vietnamese dishes. One of my favorites that I usually get are the salt n pepper wings. They are crunchy and moist from the inside. On occasion they do tend to over fry it a bit and it becomes too crunchy so be prepared for that. Other than that, the wings are super hot and semi spicy. They are pretty generous with the fried garlic and peppers so I usually use the remaining of it on my other dishes (yum!). My other dishes that i go to are the scrambled eggs with prawns or beef over rice. Make sure to tell them you want your scrambled eggs semi dry otherwise the scrambled eggs will come out runny. This dish is superb with the right kind of hot sauce and a little bit of salt. Oh..... also try their Mongolian beef over rice and their bok choy with beef chow fun with oyster sauce. Those are great tasty dishes as well. As for the ambience for this place, it's fairly quiet. Most of the customers are regulars and local families that come here. The place is big enough to bring a group of friends to gather around and eat. Overall this place has been around for a long time and it's still one of my favorite places to go to when in need of something fast and tasty. read more
