This has been one of my favorite spots to go to when in doubt about getting something fast and good. When arriving to the restaurant, you'll be greeted immediately. You'll have to place your order at the counter before sitting at your choice of any available tables. Once seated the wait person will bring out your food. I like the fact that when you order your food, it will be prepared and ready to be served in less than 10-15mins. The variety of food you can expect to choose from are of Chinese or Vietnamese dishes. One of my favorites that I usually get are the salt n pepper wings. They are crunchy and moist from the inside. On occasion they do tend to over fry it a bit and it becomes too crunchy so be prepared for that. Other than that, the wings are super hot and semi spicy. They are pretty generous with the fried garlic and peppers so I usually use the remaining of it on my other dishes (yum!). My other dishes that i go to are the scrambled eggs with prawns or beef over rice. Make sure to tell them you want your scrambled eggs semi dry otherwise the scrambled eggs will come out runny. This dish is superb with the right kind of hot sauce and a little bit of salt. Oh..... also try their Mongolian beef over rice and their bok choy with beef chow fun with oyster sauce. Those are great tasty dishes as well. As for the ambience for this place, it's fairly quiet. Most of the customers are regulars and local families that come here. The place is big enough to bring a group of friends to gather around and eat. Overall this place has been around for a long time and it's still one of my favorite places to go to when in need of something fast and tasty. read more

I had breakfast at Jo Jo's Chinese Restaurant on Ocean Avenue a couple of days ago. I'm usually wary of Chinese-American breakfasts, since they are often unclear on the concept, but I'm willing to give a new place a try. Bad call in this case.  Their only vegetarian option was a vegetarian omelet, $11.50. The menu says it's a cheese omelet with "all these vegetables" and lists things like mushrooms, bell peppers and onions. I asked for the cheese omelet with mushrooms only. The cashier said $13.50. I said the menu says $11.50. She said, "Mushrooms two dollah." I didn't see any prices for individual vegetables on the menu, at least not in English.  I asked for butter on the side. The patty was as hard as a rock. I asked the waitress if they kept the butter in the freezer (though I already knew the answer). She said yes. I told her that made the butter too hard and to keep it in the refrigerator, but it was like talking to a block of frozen butter.  When breakfast arrived they followed the latest trend of one slice of toast cut in half. Gone are the days when customers got two slices of toast, I guess.  But the oddest thing was that the omelet had plenty of fresh sliced mushrooms but no cheese. I mentioned it to the waitress who went back to ask the cook. She came back to say the cook DID put cheese in it. I again showed the waitress that there was no cheese. She said, "Okay, don't go crazy!" (I was very calm) and went to the cook again and came back to say the cook can add "more" cheese. I said it was okay.   I've learned my lesson. read more

I've been to Jo Jo's twice, and their honey walnut prawns is a must. I usually hate walnut prawns because many places put WAY too much mayonnaise on, and it just tastes disgusting, but not here. Both times, I got the Gan Ban chicken and walnut prawns. The house-fried rice was nothing special, and the shrimp was not seasoned. The second time, we got the BBQ pork instead, which was a great choice. The lady who helped us both times was very sweet and professional. The place is quite spacious and clean. This new and improved JoJo's is now very obviously geared towards a younger generation with the cute decor and "pay before you eat" system. They also serve a lot of Vietnamese food now which is kinda strange because I always thought of this place as Hong Kong-ese. In any case, I feel like the crowd here is the same: older folks and persons who want a quick meal alone. I come here quite often actually and it's mainly because of their 3.99 BREAKFAST! No where else can you get an egg, bacon/sausage, slice of toast, and hash browns/french toast/pancake for 3.99. This is a solid place to go for lunch! The prices are really affordable and the food portions are pretty good, specially the rice plates. Ordered the pork chop with fried rice and Portuguese sauce; the pork was soft and juicy. The Saigon wings were sweet and savory. The sweet potato fries were average. I ordered above $25 and got 2 vegetable rolls for free. They were crispy and fresh. And they offer hot tea with the meal. I've only ordered one item from here but I've ordered it so many times because I love it so much. Pork Bahn Mi: For only $4 it has to be one of the best hidden deals in SF. They have other types as well but I liked their Pork version the best. It's so delicious and filling. Such a nice place. I was just looking for a place to have breakfast and saw they were open. They provide menus at the door and I think up front by the counter where you order. They also have really clear instructions on how to order here! Their decor is really and makes for a great, uniformed theme. I feel like they have a really nice, warm ambiance even if it's gray and cold outside. And their staff seems really quick to handle customers. And they're also really friendly and helpful. I ordered the laksa (one of my favorite dishes EVER and I feel like it's so hard to find!!!!) and I got a Five Spice Chicken and Pate sandwich to go. They even gave me extra soup and bean sprouts!!! Everything is SO affordable!!!! And they've got a good variety of dishes and items but not so many that is overwhelming. Jo Jo's Cafe is one of many Asian restaurants on Ocean Avenue and it's one that is worth checking out. Great things about this Vietnamese restaurant is the good variety within its menu. They serve pho, rice dishes, and breakfast items! I tried to Chicken Noodle Pho and was satisfied due to its decent pricing, large serving size, and overall flavor. It's not too salty and the noodles were cooked perfectly. The chicken itself was very tender and easy to eat. Add some of the garnishes they provide to customize it your liking and you have an awesome soup. A perfect meal for those super cold SF days! Service is very friendly and welcoming. Finding a table isn't an since they have plenty available. They did have a mix up with our order, but it was resolved quickly and didn't cause that big of an inconvenience. This place deserves so much more praise! The amount of work they have put into the outdoor dining is beyond what I have seen so far, very well designed!! Some places just set out tables and chairs with a small barricade to shield from passing cars, but you still don't feel safe. Here at JoJo's, I felt extremely safe. Each group basically gets their own little cubicle space, and I'm not talking about something that is teeny tiny, no there is ample space for a group of 4 or even 5 comfortably. Thick wooden walls on each side that separate table from table, which makes it a very private and safe experience. I used to get Club Sandwich from Jojo's Cafe before it was remodeled. Years have passed and I have yet to re-visit here. Finally, on a Sunday morning, I decided it was time for me to check out Jo Jo's Cafe! I was very lucky to get the $6.99 breakfast deal (9am-12pm), it is really a steal since inflation happens all over the world now. I had french toast, egg and bacon and my friend got the same thing. We both asked for over-easy eggs, but mine was really raw and his was really cooked. To be honest, it was not a big deal since the price was $6.99. Haven't been back since the new remodel but prices have definitely went up compared to the old version of Jo Jo. However, something I come for on quite a regular is the Vietnamese five spice chicken sandwich at $4 per, and then I usually top it off with some watermelon juice $2.50. That's my go to starter pack so I haven't explored the other options on the menu! Wow, I can't believe I have not written a review for this spot up until now! I came back when I was a CCSF student & they had lunch specials for well under $5! Ramen noodles with a bread! Fast forward to the late 2010s & now 2020s, I can honestly say that this place is the real deal when it come to getting reasonably priced food. These folks are very family oriented & involved with schools! When catering for teachers, these folks don't skimp & they make sure every little nook & cranny is on point. They package them In eco friendly containers that are reusable & provide options for all, including vegetarians like myself. I can't say much about ambiance because my colleagues/ support groups usually get things catered & delivered. My veg entrees of Vegs, mushrooms & rice was yummy & filling. It feels like Jo Jo's Cafe has just a little bit of everything (Chinese, Vietnamese, American breakfast) and it is all pretty reasonably priced. I've probably come here for about a decade or so, before and after their remodel. Before the remodel, they had a full service staff take your order. After the remodel, you just order at the counter and they'll give you a number to take to your seat. Personally, I like their baked rice dishes, usually preferring their seafood or pork chop variations. The seafood version, in particular, has a good amount of shrimp, krab meat (yes, it's the imitation stuff), scallops, squid over a bed of fried rice or spaghetti with sauce covering. It's quite fit. Their rice plates are generally fine, but nothing you wouldn't fine at most Chinese restaurant's plate lunch menus. I tried their American breakfast recently and it always intrigued me at their cheap price (I think it is around $7 these days). It isn't the largest portion, so my big appetite needed a little more afterwards. But the latte that came with my order was a pretty large cup and it wasn't bad at all. I will say the service isn't always the nicest, but Jo Jo's Cafe remains a decent meal after all these years. read more

I hadn't been to JoJo's since the 1990s. It had been a regular spot for me since it first opened. I am happy to report that the food here has only improved over the years.
