I have always loved Western bagel, especially their Everything cheese bagels... I was just shocked at the price increase when I bought six bagels on Sunday. Two small cream cheese and six everything cheese bagels came out to $25. I will really have to think twice about going there from now on. They asked me to stand in line for 25 minutes while and keep in mind it's a pick up order so I drove there for another 10-15 minutes. I've been to this location 4 times within the last month and don't plan on coming back. The customer service is absolutely terrible and none of the employees have any sense of competence or communication within their staff. The first visit my husband and I had come together and ordered several bagels. I always order an egg ala bagel - everything bagel with cheddar and turkey. Western bagel. UGH. Why are your carbs so delicious. Over the years, without fail I have never been disappointed with anything I have ordered here. This morning I stopped in before a work meeting. I ordered a dozen bagels with 2 different cream cheeses. There was a bit of a line, but all of the girls working behind the counter were so quick and efficient, I couldn't have been waiting for more than a minute. The young girl that helped me was very sweet. She assisted me with my bagel order and had me rang up faster than I could make it to the register. When arriving to work and eating an onion bagel, I could tell how fresh it was within the first bite. I had bought both the regular and the garlic and herb cream cheese. Both so tasty. I was really surprised how much I enjoyed the flavored cream cheese considering I'm more of a plain jane when it comes to my bagel. I wish there was a location closer to my house so I could frequent here more often. However, it's a blessing in disguise because I would have an endless supply in my house at all times. They can definitely improve on customer service and availability of product. They keep running out of hot turkey. In addition the young lady who rang me up had an attitude just because I said I did not know they charged extra for cream cheese. She looked unhappy in general and did not even say a thank you after the transaction. Need to train your employees to inform customers of all these additional charges such as cream cheese on an egg. I also noticed they cut the bagels directly on the cutting board without any paper or plastic beneath. Hope that board is clean and causes no cross contamination! Please don't skimp on the foil too. I came here to grab a quick breakfast before my Black Friday shopping and was kind of disappointed from the size and flavor of their bagels. The flavor was okay but I'm more of an "in your face" flavor kinda girl. The onion bagel and blueberry bagels were okay. Nothing special yet fulfilled my carb craving. The one thing that really stood out was their variety. The salesperson said the "everything" and "onion" was the most popular. This is walking distance from my special lady friends place so I have been subjected to it repeatedly. It is hands down the worst bagel place I have ever been to, worse than any chain (Einsteins, Brugers etc), worse than any one off. It is bad. To me, a good bagel place would 1. Be fast- at most you are toasting it and smearing it with cream cheese 2. Be consistent- when I order the same thing multiple times I should get the same product 3. Be fairly priced- market value for a bagel and cream cheese seems around 2 dollars 4. Be clean This place doesn't score well on any of those criteria. The other negative reviews of this place are on the money. The staff is very young and not managed at all making the customer service terrible. The line gets long and moves slowly. The place is never very clean, the workers aren't always wearing their gloves, the bagels are of widely varying quality, sometimes you get a lot of cream cheese sometimes you get almost zero. I head over to this bagel joint usually every Thursday morning at 7:00AM to get my fix for the week. Perfect time to go also cause alot of the bagel are so fresh n so clean. I've been going there for a while now so I got to know some of the workers and everyone that works there is just great. A smile in every face and full of energy.. Being that its 7AM, I give them props. Price is between inexpensive and moderate and they have great deals at times like "Order a dozen and they'll throw in 2 extra bagels". I love their selection of cream cheese; I always like to try something new at times but I love my Garlic Cream cheese. The 2nd guy walks in wearing regular clothes, talks with the staff, walks around to the back (without washing hands, fills himself a drink, walks to the way back out of sight, comes back and TOUCHES the food prep area while flirting with the staff) Yes, he is an employee (one of those employees that hangs out at his job when he is not working, we all know the "Bro" that bumps gangster rap. So I would LOVE to give a review of this place, but I was waiting 10 min and did not receive ANY SERVICE. I went in at about 8:20am on a MONDAY and I had 10 min before work with what I thought to give 7 minutes to get a bagel for breakfast. But I was wrong. There was 2 people working: a young lady ringing someone up (that took forever!) and an older lady making food. They both moved at a snails pace and didn't seem to care or acknowledge me at all. It really sucks to drop my rating down because I do love the bagels SO much! The service there seriously sucks though... I've gone there on a 'Bagel Run' for myself and my coworkers at least once a week and EVERY TIME something was wrong or something was incorrectly charged. I got nothin' but love for the Western Bagel. They have the best bagels ever (next to H&H in NYC but i do not live anywhere near there!) When my husband and I moved to that 'hood in Chatsworth we were absolutely thrilled to have a Starbucks and Western Bagel right next door to each other...And they were walking distance from our house!! When my son was born we took many walks with the stroller over there to get the much needed coffee and bagels. I am partial to the plain or egg (esp. if you get them first thing in the morning...mmm fresh bagels that don't need toasting or anything!) but also have much fondness for the onion, sesame and cinnamon raisin (awesome with butter). If you are feeling indulgent, I highly recommend the cheese-everything bagel - it has cheese (among other yumminess) baked on the top and bottom and is so kick-ass when toasted. Okay, now i'm craving them. If you're thinking low-carb, get a bag of the Alternative Bagels. They're very good and taste just like smaller versions of the originals. They come in only a few flavors though but they are all good and satisfying. They're baked goods are also tasty, if you're wanting something sweet. Decent bagels but its run by teenagers. As much as I enjoy a good bagel, my experience here is generally negative. I like to see teenagers work but these kids don't really work. They spend most of their time hanging out with each other rather than serving the customers and there's not an adult or manager in site. After managing people for 10 years, my standards are a little higher but I don't think I'm being unreasonable. You order your bagels first and you'd expect someone would ring you up but they don't (unless you force them to). You wait while they chat with each other and take their sweet time. If you aren't paying attention, your freshly toasted bagels sit on a counter getting cold. When you ask if the they're ready, you usually hear "I don't know, what did you order? ". By the time I leave, I'm usually frustrated and the cold bagels don't taste as good when you get home. If you aren't in a hurry and have a fantastic disposition, stop by. I'm here weekly, and the staff is welcoming and cheery. The store is well-organized and clean, and the bagels are fresh and squishy, just the way I like them. My chicken bagel sandwich always seems to be bursting at the seams, so the strategic use of toothpicks holds it together. Should you want an alternative bagel or a lettuce wrap, they will be similarly overflowing with protein and veg. This place treats their employees and customers well and it shows. PS. I've had bagels from Western Bagel at work, but today was my first time coming in. For some reason I've been craving a bagel sandwich and Western Bagel did not disappoint. I found their menu to be a little confusing. It's different from what I saw online and there are paninis, in addition to bagel sandwiches. And I didn't see any breakfast-y sandwiches like bacon and egg (although I could be totally wrong). I settled on the turkey because they slice thick pieces of fresh, Thanksgiving-style turkey right in front of you. None of that sandwich meat nonsense. It was really good! I had mine on a toasted everything bagel, which was a bit of a mistake because the everything crumbs got a little burnt in the toaster. Oh well. I also freaking love their chocolate chip delcos. "Employee 1" took my order and started preparing my food. I noticed s/he was wearing only one glove when s/he cut the bagel and put it in the toaster. But I thought, "No problem, as long as you're the 'food preparer' and not the cashier . . ." "Employee 1" then did the transaction and counted back my change with un-gloved hands, holding one glove. S/he then put that glove back on and finished preparing the food, putting American cheese on the bagel with the un-gloved hand that was just counting back my bills. I watched somewhat incredulously. I felt compelled to ask one of the younger employees (whom I'll call Employee 2) if Employee 1 was the manager. (No, thank God.) I told the manager that I didn't like the way Employee 1 was handling $$, then food. His initial response was "but we wear gloves." He then told Employee 1 to put on the glove. Thankfully, Employee 2 offered to make me another one. He even asked me what kind of cheese I wanted! There's a choice? Pepper jack, please! I felt embarrassed for myself, the manager, and Employee 1, and put a buck in the tip jar before leaving. I really don't like to complain about an employee, because a job is a job and times are hard. Wake up people this is the San Fernando Valley there is no parking anywhere, Stores are busy and busy stores are good for the economy. Skip the big boy next door if you are drinking drip coffee. Western Bagel has 5 different blends brewed and they use Airpots which keeps the coffee from getting over cooked and burnt. The Western Bagel house blend is a much better brew than the burnt roast Pike blend next door. The consistent line here shows that they have good product and loyal customers. Great service, but don't expect to be in and out in 30 seconds. Bagels need to be sliced, toasted, and prepped, and it does not happen at light speed. Expect to spend 5 to 10 minutes here for a takeout order, or call it in ahead of time if you're in a hurry. Came here to get the egg a la bagel (4)- I love this place in SD and I tried out this place, not as good but it comes pretty close, I just wish the egg was cooked better, mine looked a little browed or blacked, not sure why. Stay away from this place. They are overcharging. Also, their orders have missing items. If you are absolutely must order from this location, check your bag and receipt carefully. I was served by the "cashier 11" at 10:35 am. I ordered 3 bagels with a cream cheese bagels with lox, tomato, onion and lettuce and one cream cheese bagel. Upon making a payment, I was provided with only three sandwiches and I was told that all four bagels are there. I asked to recalculate. The fourth bagel was not in the bag. When he made the fourth bagel I proceeded with the payment. I was in a hurry and left without checking the receipt. When I got home I discovered that none of the bagels had onions and lettuce. All bagels had too much cream cheese and it was impossible to eat them without cream cheese all over us. I noticed that I was charged for the extra cream cheese that I didn't ask for. The total bill was $37.65 for four bagels. Too much for a bagel place. And, the server could not even get it correctly even though the place was not busy and 2 other servers/cashiers worked there at the same time. Bad experience! read more
