I've only been once, but I really like the feel of this spot! It looks very small from the outside, but it's surprisingly spacious with a nice big bar and high-top tables as well as tables in an inclosed outdoor area. It's decorated in a comfortable, welcoming way, and I totally forgot I was on Allens Ave while I was inside :) The bartender was so nice! Very warm but not too chatty. They carry lots of local products: Thomas Tew, Sons of Liberty, I don't know...a bunch of others I can't think of right now....but yay! It sounds like they have some pretty solid bar food, although I didn't see or try any. But I would like to some time soon! I'm glad this is here because it fills a real neighborhood void! read more

Nice place! Not very big but it's clean with a good selection of beers on tap. And oh yes, they also offer a selection of appetizers (I had the Mofo fries and bacon wings, both good). Service was excellent, they have some big TVs, and it's a place I know I'll be back to in the future. Tip: Don't be put off by the location on Allens Ave, just find a parking spot on the street (it was easy when I was there at 5pm) and have a beer and some bacon wings! read more

I'm so happy to have found What Cheer in my Providence travels. What a great, unpretentious, local bar with an awesome bourbon, whiskey and local craft beer selection. I mean, isn't that what we all dream of? We went on a Saturday afternoon right after they opened and were able to grab a table near the front of the small, inviting bar. Since we were there early on there weren't any servers on just yet but the bartender (and also the owner) was very welcoming and helpful in answering any questions we had about their bourbon selection. The bourbon we settled on was his personal recommendation after asking quite a few questions on our preferences. It was fantastic and I definitely did the whole "let me make a note of this bourbon's name in my phone" and accidentally deleted the note a few days later. That having been said, I would suggest you go in, speak with the bar keep, and discover your own new favorite whiskey. read more

Back the first time since under new management and am so glad it's back. Great little bar with a wide selection of interesting craft beers on tap, bottled, and in cans. AND the food is excellent. Tonight I had the tostones with pork which was very tasty and filling for only $10 and my wife had the chicken wings which were also excellent. The service was friendly and the crowd was a casual, comfortable mix of ages. We look forward to imbibing in the outside area when it's not raining. I had drinks with a friend at What Cheer Tavern today after work. I didn't know what to expect but had hopes that it would be good since there is such a lack of good bars on this side of town. The beer selection was excellent! Narragansett seasonal was the only crap beer on the menu. Everything else was from greats like Stone. They had an excellent Scotch Ale the name of which escapes me now. We also tried a few things from their food menu. The bacon wings were okay. I REALLY liked their kimchi deviled eggs. Good flavor there. Didn't quite mesh with my scotch ale but no big deal. The place is small and very clean. The thing that surprised me was how well lit it was. From the outside it looks like the kind of place you might go to hide, much like a cave. Not so. Definitely my favorite neighborhood bar to date. Dave the bartender (and maybe the owner) is very knowledgeable about his beers and local brewer's scene. What cheer is the best! Awesome beer that is constantly rotating! A small food menu that always changes, with fresh and delicious options. I always feel welcome in this unpretentious environment. What more could you ask for? My only complaint is that when I went today they didn't have the mofo fries, which are out of this world. But the sweet potato tacos I got were awesome and the chips and salsa were super fresh and on point. I understand they need to switch it up and it gets me trying new and delicious things. Nothing bad to say here. Great neighborhood bar.. I am so lucky it is close to home. Great draft beer and bottled beer selection, all craft and a lot are hard to get. I love the small bar menu. Interesting takes on tacos, hotdogs, French fries and wings, some of my favorite things! Try the kimchi hot dog, the poutine or the BACON buffalo wings, you won't be let down. Prices are fair and the atmosphere, is great. I love the kind and knowledgable owner. He has great taste in beers. Nice little beer bar! The bartenders and pleasant and attentive. They have a good amount of seating inside and out. Street parking is always easy to come by. The beer selection changes often and has a nice variety to it. My one issue is that the beers tend to be quite expensive and many are served in pretty small glassware if it is high alcohol (this is becoming more common elsewhere though). I would come more often if the beers were just a buck or so cheaper. The food though is pretty cheap and really excellent quality for the price. They make some really interesting and different items for a small beer bar. They do a variety of beer events as well. And since Track 84 closed they are one of the only spots that do so. read more

I don't usually hand out 5 stars, but man, here it is. This bar looks like a shithole from the outside and it is clearly not in the best neighborhood. Once you walk in though, all bets are off! This is a beer lover's dream. The selection is handpicked, obviously by seasoned beer lover. There is probably about a dozen taps and each one pours out something amazing. Don't expect to find a Sam Seasonal or some other whored out label. It's just a great mix of great drafts, always rotating out. What's even more impressive than that is what's in the cooler. All your favorite bottles and cans easily displayed for you enjoyment. What puts this places over the top is the food. It's gourmet comfort food! I swear to god there is a chef in that kitchen. The noodles are awesome. The fries are amazing. And I dare you to find better wings. The atmosphere is just the icing on the cake. If you are a 20 or 30 something, this is your place. Don't be afraid to make a friend or two. My only gripe is the hours. Obviously, this is own and operated and they can't be there 24/7. But a man can dream, can't he? read more

I love this place. They have great craft beers on tap, including local beers. The beers on tap change pretty frequently, so you can always try something new and interesting each time you visit. It's a neighborhood place - the staff makes an effort to learn your name, so after only a few times I get greeted with my name when I arrive or leave. The atmosphere isn't fancy, but they do have an outdoor space for the summer which is nice. Good (bar) food, too. I'd recommend the sweet potato fries and the poutine. read more

My friends and I went here the other night just to try it out - we heard amazing things about the atmosphere and beer. Not sure if it was an off night, but the service and the food was REALLY terrible. My fiancé ordered wings and they were SO tiny. All of our meals came out about 20 minutes apart. The host of trivia was the redeeming quality of the night and the beer was of course, great. Really would like to give this place a better review based on what everyone else is saying but our experience was subpar. :( read more

What Cheer is exactly what I look for in a bar. It has friendly staff, a fun vibe, and a great beer selection. I had read reviews for this joint previously, but never wandered out to that particular neighborhood. I tend to stick around to a lot of bars in my own 'hood. Luckily for me, i had an adventurous friend and we ventured out to check out this gem. When we walked in, there was a handful of people hanging out at the bar. The lovely bartender offered us a warm greeting and a review of the drafts that they had available. One of the best aspects of What Cheer is that almost all of the beers are local, as in from RI. I do believe that one of the selections was from MA, but I'll let that slide because of how amazing they were. We were offered samples of any beer that piqued our interest. I tried a couple and made my decision (Pretty Things stout). We relaxed, chatted with some locals, perused the menu (a small list of your usual bar food items), and had a pretty awesome time. I will definitely be back in the future to try some more local craft brews and possibily some of that tasty sounding chili. read more

What a fantastic bar! Sad to say I had never heard of it until this past week. The quest for the illusive Founders KBS landed us at What Cheer since we had discovered they had the brew on tap!! The bar is on the small side, but I loved the cozy intimate feel of the place. I believe our bartender was the owner or manager and he was fantastic. No crap on tap here - great place to grab a craft beer. We were hungry and decided to split an order of spring rolls and the carne asada tacos.... fantastic! Heard so much about this bar and finally went in. If you enjoy craft beer then this is your place. Fairly small inside but so welcoming! The bartender (I believe was the owner) gave us so much information about the beers they offered and allowed us to try it before committing to a full glass. The prices for beer were very reasonable and the atmosphere was a fun, friendly place. They have numerous TVs so this would be a good spot to catch a game. We decided to order some food and I can't believe the quality and amazing food they serve. We were told that the menu is always changing so this night we ordered the homemade chips and guacamole and wings, they were both so flavorful, I wish we had room to try the tacos they had. Go there with a big appetite because you could have a great dinner and beer, I can't wait to go back again. I feel that this will be my new go to spot for wings and beer. read more

The place was smaller than what I am use to. The new owners are extremely nice. I went on a Sunday and it was more quiet than what I expected. I notice that some of the cooks from Brass Monkey were hanging out after their shift. There are two big tables and a bar across. The great part about this place is that the kitchen does not close until the place closes! I ordered buffalo wings and some teriyaki wings. I recommend this place if you like small neighborhood bars. read more

The only thing preventing me from giving them 5 stars is the beer selection is pretty small. Both bottles and drafts. You don't have a lot of options so hopefully you find something you like. The food however is some of the best bar food I've ever had. The buffalo wings are without a doubt the best buffalo wings I've ever had in Providence. They have a bunch of cool takes on tacos, with my personal favorite being the hipster tacos. A great combination of Korean bbq flavors, kimchi, pickled cucumbers and a crema. Along with the good selection of tacos there are some creative fry platters, including a curry dominated plate, and poutine with actual cheese curds instead of just melted cheese. The only reason I am giving this bar two stars is based on the beer selections, which was nice. The service left much to be desired, including not having the food we ordered, the waitress just bringing us the check when we weren't ready, the bathroom running out of TP and finally another bartender cursing out my friend as we were leaving. The entire experience reminded me of a college bar where they try to get the patrons drunk and if you aren't drinking enough you get pushed out. I'm disappointed that my party would be pushed out because we had coordinated in advance and had a designated driver who was not drinking. read more

I was fairly certain this was going to be a horrendous dive bar based on the neighborhood. Much to my surprise this was as sweet a hole in the wall you could find. The beer selection is out of this world and the owner is incredibly personable. If you can manage to not be a dick you should have a pretty good time in this place. What Cheer is a great little place a few miles from downtown Providence! Perfect spot for meeting friends for drinks after work. It is TINY, however (maybe 5 tables and 12 bar stools) so not great as a getting-to-know-you outing...usually very loud and crowded, and it's mostly full of regulars. The bar is very nice and has wood floors and stone paneling so even though it looks like a dive on the outside, it's really quite nice. What Cheer has a great selection of local and semi-local beers of various prices. You can get cheap bottles or Budweiser or Narragansett or great stuff ($5-$6) on tap. They also rotate what they have on tap so the menu changes regularly. What Cheer also has a very nice food menu and they try to use only local meat (not sure about the other products). The chef usually has some nice specials (which also rotate regularly) but when we went, the special was "Your Mom," which kind of summarizes the playful attitude of the place. Definitely check out What Cheer next time you're trying something new! read more
