I have never eaten pho under a disco ball and rainbow lights before. The wall decor is made up of huge colorful pictures of banh mi, an entire wall dedicated to a cityscape advertising "What the Pho" on fake billboards, and graphic stickers screaming "Food!", "Fun!", "Family!", and "Smoothies!". To top it all off, you've got Black Eyed Peas techno-beat instrumentals playing in the background. Also, there are two big-screen televisions broadcasting the news. It's a lot to take in, but I guess you cannot expect a restaurant called "What the Pho" to exude classiness. They could probably cut electricity costs if they removed the huge, rotating strobe light on the ceiling that blinded me every 360 degrees. (Just for anyone looking to start a pho restaurant, "Disco Drink Bar" is not the most appropriate theme.) The pho was alright - huge portions, on the plus side, but my boyfriend didn't like it much at all. He said they messed up the meatballs. How the pho can you possibly serve up bad frozen meatballs when you are located inside an Asian market?! I ordered the "3 Bean Dessert", which was not good. They served it to me in a boba cup with a significant layer (maybe 1/3 of the cup) of ice - not large enough to pick out, but not small enough to eat comfortably. There wasn't even anything to slurp up and it was impossible to mix up since there was so much ice, so I had to dump everything into a bowl and eat it with a spoon. (They did serve it to me with both a spoon and a smoothie straw, so they were probably confused too.) Eating the dessert was also difficult because every time I ate a spoonful, I was biting through chunks of ice. Do they know you can injure your teeth by biting ice?! I suggest they 1) either make it a "shaved ice" dessert (with actual shaved ice) or a straight-up drink so as to avoid confusing how-do-I-eat-this situations, and 2) make the red beans smaller, because they were really big. Couldn't finish the dessert, because my teeth were getting tired and all of the ice was melting into my coconut milk - it was a watery mess. I probably won't be back until they have a huge decor overhaul. I think the obnoxious decor actually intensifies every negative thing about the meal because you are just so annoyed. (Granted, the BOGO $4 Banh Mi's might be worth it though, if you take them to-go?) read more

I have been here twice and both times it has failed to meet my expectations. First of all the appearance, the seating area is very small but they do a good job of making it look clean. The smell is a different story, both times they used a smelly musty old rag to clean the tables. The smell of sweat just killed my appetite. Next, the lights. So obnoxious. I don't get why they thought it would be a good idea to have disco strobe lights going on the whole time. Sitting there trying to eat your food in peace is impossible with all these random lights flashing and sometimes getting in your eye. I can't even have decent lighting to look at my food. Real obnoxious. Not a good idea. The food was subpar, compared to Bistro B (which I think they're a chain of) the food is not great here. I've gotten pho, rice dishes, spring rolls, and sandwiches. Everything is better at Bistro B. The quality of my rice dish today was pretty bad, it was like they just slapped some pre cooked things onto the platter and the things that went in weren't even great. Yay for finding a place that makes yummy durian smoothies even closer to me! I was grocery shopping in 99 ranch over the weekend and spotted this place when I was on my way out. I came up to the guy working the register and asked him if they had any durian smoothies. He was super nice and said of course. Well there was no surprise that I got a durian smoothie. I also got lychee jelly added to it. The smoothie came in a short and chubby cup like the ones from QQ teahouse. Super cute! On top of that, the smoothie was great. No too sweet, tons of flavor. The place was cute as well. Very colorful in orange, white, and green...which was an odd combination, but it looked very 70's esque.The menu was expansive and very affordable. This is a small stand inside Ranch 99. I've been eating at the main restaurant Bistro B for years. Their food isn't the best, but it's cheap and above average. My favorite items to order are the chao tom cuon (fried shrimp spring rolls) and the 4/$1 egg rolls. It's a great place to get some Bistro B food without having to drive all the way to Garland. However, they get 2 stars, because the food just took way too long to order. I only ordered the spring rolls, and it took about 30 minutes for it to come out. The first time I ate here I ordered the curry chicken soup with vermicelli noodles. It was *cloyingly* sweet which is a description normally reserved for desserts but in this case highly appropriate. On plus side, there were generous chunks of chicken. I was looking forward to comfort food in the form of a nice savory curry chicken, and that obviously did not happen. I thought maybe the heavy handed doses of sugar in the soup was probably just limited to this item. I was wrong. Like a dummy, I went back a second time and ordered the Thai seafood noodle soup. There were generous portions of shrimp, chunks of fish and mussels in the soup. Unfortunately, the lemongrass and again the amount of sugar was overwhelming. And bizarrely, instead of beans sprouts and basil to put into the soup, I was given some strange looking long stalks of greens with some small sparse round leaves that were neither basil or cilantro and some shredded red and green cabbage that they use to plate their non-soup items on the menu. Honestly, it would not be an exaggeration to state that the amount of sugar in both soups at is comparable to drinking condensed coke. You guessed correctly if you think I was not able to drink the soup the second time either. Their Pho is decent, they have Bo Kho (brisket stew with carrots) which is hard to find. Some of their other specialty soups are admirably watered down which is a shame. But this place is a great value. Buy one get one Banh Mi sandwiches are a steal. They are huge and loaded and always taste fresh. They also make their spring rolls to order, and have a bunch of unique rolls you don't find anywhere else. They are also loaded with shrimp and very very fresh. For variety and price, this is hands down one of the better options in Planos. Again some of their food can be hit or miss, but their varied menu makes it worth trying a few times. The second time we went the kids and ordered the pho with meatballs, Kalbi rice plate, and the chicken rice plate. The pho was much better this time around (less salty and noodles weren't over cooked) and the family enjoyed the chicken. The Kalbi was tough so I don't recommend that dish. Everything is self service, except they bring the food out to you. They have their own dining area with a tv for entertainment. This place has a decent bahn mi, pho, and excellent boba drinks and vermicelli noodles across the board! The orders are made fast some days, but some days slower depending on the customer traffic( mind you, this place is pretty popular so you may need to wait for awhile during lunch or dinner rush) which I don't mind waiting for. My husband finds this having the most amazing boba drinks esp their taro smoothie boba, while I love their che drinks which are beautifully displayed out in their counter area. I have so far tried the fresh rolls with grilled shrimp, rare beef pho, and bun thit nuong. I think their bun thit nuong had a fabulous grilled pork and the noodles were served nice and warm. Mmm mm! The fish sauce was excellent and definitely a must when it comes to the vermicelli noodle dish. The pho is a bit MSG-ey however, but overall had pretty good flavors and I liked that they give you a lot of bean sprouts and basils for my pho. The fresh rolls are made fresh as I ordered it and served with pretty good peanut sauce. I think their strong point is their drinks and they have got many different team smoothie and fruity che options. The red beans in the che are often slightly under cooked but I really like their jellies and other beans and fruits that come in their che so I don't mind... I would give it a four star for their food. Although it is not the most fabulous viet food or boba drink place, they still manage to bring more than average food to please your palate. Average Vietnamese food. Sister store of Bistro B. We usually buy their young coconut with gelatin inside. Not the best, but for the location and price, it's not bad. They don't replace their stock often (typical for Asians always trying to get rid of their stock no matter how old it is-a pet peeve of mine) or put expiration dates on these coconuts, so it's a hit or miss if some of the interior is going bad.
