As a loyal customer of yours for over 40 years I can't help but make a couple of observations about some little things in your shop. Why on earth are the best cinnamon rolls in town now unaffordable? What has happened? And don't blame it on covid or anything else like the cost of eggs. Give me a break. When the price of eggs and gas and other ingredients comes down like it has will you reduce the price back to affordable? That never happens. Let the buyer beware. Let the gouging continue. Right? Have been coming to wheat fields for years and their food is generally good but the service is hit or miss. Recently picked up breakfast takeout on an early Sunday morning. When I arrived there was no clearly marked pick up area, and no one there. I waited a few minutes and then the take out gal bustled over. Ron's AM wrap was as good as I remember! Whoever came up with the idea to mix eggs and sausage with mashed potatoes is a genius. Maybe it was Ron... The Belgian waffle traveled ok, it lost its crispiness on the outside but was plenty fluffy. They put all the toppings in separate little containers, so it was actually kind of fun to assemble. The bacon obviously didn't travel great but the sausage did. Also picked up a caramel roll, which was phenomenal after a quick zap in the microwave. read more

Went to Wheatfields for lunch today . Got the open faced turkey with mashed potatoes. The turkey was plentiful and good but the gravy was more like paste than gravy and mash potatoes were tasteless. And sure I would be more than happy to pay that if I knew their staff was being well compensated but with the rumors of how the owners treat their workers I highly doubt they'd actually be compensating their staff well (if this is untrue, please let me know) but based on their staffing issues I highly doubt that that business who properly compensate their staff have these same issues (since this location has really slashed their hours). Oh Wheatfields you have my heart!! I stopped in for brunch on a Saturday morning with a couple of friends. Wait wasn't too bad, only 15-20 minutes. They had a special menu for the CWS, so I ordered the Quiche Lorraine with a morning muffin (similar to carrot cake!). Let me just say this was one of the best dang quiches I've ever had! Our food came out piping hot and the servings were more than we could finish. Our waitress was extremely nice and on top of things as well! I love certain dishes: crab or lobster cake benedict (so good! this is the main reason I come back), almond butter french toast, crepes aphrodite. However, this restaurant gets three stars for the following reasons: Many of the dishes are not worth it. Wheatfields has an overwhelming large menu and can be over-priced. Also, they have long waits, a chaotic environment, and hit and miss service. Sometimes you'll get a wonderful waitress who chats it up with you about how great tomatoes are and then makes your day by bringing you an extra plate of tomatoes. And other times, you'll get a waitress who forgets your sides, can't explain anything on the menu, and never brings your to-go boxes. When it comes to coffee, I get tempted by the pretty pictures of lattes with overflowing whipped cream. However, the lattes have always been mediocre - go with regular drip coffee if you're desperate for caffeine! read more

This review is strictly for the take-out bakery. The "pie of the month" is an excellent promotion at $9.99. We got the peach pie today. The crust was out of this world. Peach filling was good too of course. I wish that Wheatfields' fruit pies were a touch more tart, but they are delicious anyway. Counter person was helpful in steering me to the pie I wanted after I couldn't find it on my own. My daughter wanted this Black and White cake for her wedding reception and even though it was a bit pricier than traditional wedding cake, I decided to splurge. Let me say it was the best wedding cake ever. Our guests raved about how delicious it was and left us with only a little of the chocolate cake at the end of the night. The only problem we had was the stand for the round cakes was not left with the venue staff, however you can see that it was easily remedied. Stoped in for a quick soup and salad for lunch on a Monday and may as well have stopped on Saturday as I think the food was made then. Chicken noodle soup tasted worse than canned and the salad had mushy lettuce. This used to be one of the best places in town for brunch but it had gone way down hill. Ron Popp is now coasting on his laurels getting ready to retire. The dining room needs a good cleaning top to bottom. I expect way more from this one-time Omaha institutions. read more

I recently purchased my spouse a strawberry wedding cake for his birthday since he wanted something fruity. Also gluten free. Very tasty! I had forgotten they had all kinds of ready made sandwiches, chicken salad and even enchiladas from Andre's restaurant next door available to go. Makes for an easy lunch or after work meal. The best part of our breakfast experience was the ice cold water on a super hot day. The lady seating us had a challenge speaking in normal sentences. She asked how many were in our party...I said "5." Her response "everybody". Everybody what? She was trying to tell me that my entire party needed to be there before she would seat us. Understandable...but I didn't gather that from her 1 word response of "everybody." The food was slow to come out and "ehhh" at best. There are a number of things Wheatfields does very well -- muffins: the raspberry is my favorite, and I'm sure the others are as delightful as they look; and desserts: the Italian wedding cake is amazing - whipped cream, strawberries, white cake -- what's not to love?! Their menu used to be more extensive, but during a recent evening's visit, there wasn't anything that totally tripped my trigger, so I opted for a salad and a side order of some comfort food -- mashed potatoes and gravy. My partner chose a Reuben sandwich. The sandwich was huge, toasted and warm, and pretty good. It came with a side of fries that could have been good, but they were dusted with rosemary, a trendy fry seasoning, and not a favorite of mine. The salad was very good, a nice mix of various greens, but those mashed potatoes -- alas. For a restaurant that seems to promote a sense of homemade goods, those spuds fell so short. The serving size was monstrous, which would have been lovely had the food been edible, but (1) the mashed potatoes themselves didn't taste homemade, and (2) the color and flavor of the gravy were such that it was hard to discern what animal it had been made from. How interesting that the older I get the less likely I am to want to frequent places that cater to an older audience (which I got the impression Wheatfields had become). Should I patronize this place again, it will be only for cakes and definitely carryout. read more

The food her is ok and I like the desserts, BUT there are a LOT of places in town to get awesome desserts. When I go some place to eat or shop, I want to enjoy the food and the atmosphere. Eating out is an escape out from normal dinner time. It's supposed to be fun. When a restaurant becomes political and starts shoving their views down your throat, it's ruined. Throw in a giant, obnoxious poster of Trump on the wall, and it's all over. Political signs go outside! I almost commented before I walked out, but I didn't think it would make a difference. absolutely horrible experience. We ordered a cake for my moms bday 2-3 days in advance. We noticed the hand writing was very messy, ok whatever. Then we took it out of the box and it was completely lop sided. We sent wheat fields a private message as we didn't want to leave a review if they'd just make it right. They asked us for more details then never responded. So my mom went there in person. They had no management and my mom had to wait for the manager to drive there. They accused my mom of dropping the cake because of the finger print. The finger print was clearly an accident (not even done by my mom) and NOBODY dropped the cake. Let me make this clear: my mom didn't pick up the cake from wheatfields NOR did she take the cake out of the box. Shame on you for accusing and treating my mom like this. She only showed them 1 photo so I'll attach photos of the other sides so you can CLEARLY see nobody dropped it the cake it was just sloppily and carelessly made. On the shorter side there was a ton of frosting in the middle so they clearly knew and tried to even it out. Never got an apology, refund, nothing. Instead they dragged it out way more than it needs to be. It says A LOT about an owner by how they treat their customers. Seriously, how hard is it to just apologize?? I think the loser manager must have a huge ego, you know take this a lesson people will respect you more if you admit when you're wrong. After looking up the company more they had a class action law suit involving 40 ex employees not being paid by the scum owner, and had 10 citations for violating mask mandates. I recvd the absolute worst service in my entire life. It was initially a party of 3; 2 adults and 1 kid. After being taken to a table, we had to wait an addtl 15 mins before anyone acknowledged us. During this time, 1 addtl adult and 1 addtl kid arrived. When asked if we could get a larger table than the 4- person booth we were in, RuthAnn flat out said "I'm not moving you", despite there being many other (empty) larger tables available. I don't believe she would have treated other patrons this way. Moving on..After placing our orders, no one to come back to check on us, and/or explain or apologize for the additional wait time. Someone who identified himself as the cook (Andrew) brought our orders to the table, several of which were wrong, inedible, or cold. Andrew's excuse (bless his heart for trying to be kind) was that our waitress (Alisha) is new and they had 3 people not show up to work. That's fine, but no fault of ours, the paying customer. I'm sure Andrew was overwhelmed with our table bc we asked him for straws, ketchup, butter for pancakes, syrup, enough silverware for everyone at the table. IMO-these are all reasonable things to get when eating a meal. Had our waitress come back to the table in the first place, these needs would have been taken care of. Is it too much to ask that the hash browns not be burnt to a crisp, and the food be warmed? We had to ask for straws multiple times, and get someone's attention for refills. Why is it if there are things wrong with the food and/or service that we speak up about, we are being labeled 'difficult'? RuthAnn (hostess) said they "have all tried to be more than nice and accommodating" to our table, but if it continued, she was going to call the police. The police!!!!?? That's a bit extreme. Then she flat out told us we needed to pay and leave. At this point, no one in my party had raised any voices or said anything out of line; no curse words were used either. I know many of you will say just don't go there again, and believe me-I won't. However, if I'm paying my own money for any service, I expect to get it and be treated fairly and with respect. As a food service establishment, they should want to know shortcomings so it can be remedied and use that as a teaching moment for employees to learn from. If there was a staffing issue, my suggestion would have been to limit the number of patrons they could responsibly and accurately manage. Either way, it does not matter to me because I will not ever return to see if any positive changes are made. read more

Deducted one star for two reasons: 1, they do not have decaf espresso for their lattes etc. 2, the service was a bit slow. Home cooking and the vegan friendly! We found this place three weeks ago and have eaten there three times! It's very hard to choose on the menu because there is so much. My husband has had the big old fashion meals and loves them. I am vegan and they have a little to offer as a menu item, but they have such a huge menu that you can pick and choose what you like off of other dishes and they will happily put them on one plate (or boats) for you. The waiters have been very kind and helpful every time I've ordered it a breeze to order vegan. The stirfry vegetable boat has the best flavor. My partner has ranted and raved about the Eggs Benedict here for months as this was a place her and her family has went for breakfast/brunch so we decided to go here and relive that enjoyment of her favorite egg dish. Other than the English muffin being toasted for probably 30 seconds over the eggs Benedict looked great. The eggs were over easy and the hollandaise sauce delicious and sweet. I had the meatloaf, and while I've never had bbq sauce on it, I must say it was definitely fitting for the meatloaf. The meatloaf was moist throughout with breadcrumbs and onions to really bind it so it did not fall apart. Now on to my mashed potatoes. Smooth, creamy and a gravy I could drink from a travel mug. It sent me back to gravy day in high school where I could eat my weIght in just mashed potatoes and gravy in a 30 minute sitting alone. I almost asked for the recipe/package mix. It can get mildly pricey and the drinks are up there if you're looking for an adult beverage that's not a beer. However definitely a place I could go back to and be confident in my food being cooked correctly. read more

Really makes me sad to write this. Used to love Wheatfields so much. Family would always go there. The warm, cozy, comfy vibe has gone down hill hard. Our server recently was very friendly but our food took over 35 mins and they were not busy at all. We have had some bad service the few times before that. Our food was hot and still tasted good but time before it was luke warm and disappointing. Hope Ron will not let this place fizzle out like the Garden Cafe did. read more

My rating and review is based solely on what I experienced, but as supplementary info: I personally do not think you should patronize this place. I think you should not give them a dollar of your money. They are locally infamous for treating/paying their employees poorly then being loud about how "no one wants to work anymore." That said, the review: I haven't sat down at their restaurant, I've only sampled things from the bakery. However, even if improvements are made to ease my moral qualms about coming here, I don't think I would bother to return to try it. I won't lie, the baked goods are of excellent quality. But the area is so densely packed with tidy-yet-disorganized displays that it's genuinely difficult to move in the storefront. They've also occasionally posted political statements by their door, which is not something that makes me comfortable and relaxed in an establishment. Very disappointed in the service. I met a friend for lunch today to celebrate a birthday. We sat in the indoor patio area. Our waiter seemed uninterested in serving us. He was pleasant when we waived him down and ordered. A while later the patio was emptying out and my friend and I were finishing our dessert and an employee actually turned out the lights and turned off the ceiling fans! No one mentioned that they were closing the section and we needed to leave. I mentioned it to the waiter, and he said oh yes, we do that when we are preparing to close. It was so rude!! It had been a while since I had eaten there, and I remembered it as a fun place to celebrate special occasions with my friends. Not so much anymore. I won't be back :( So disappointed! read more
