I had a fantastic experience for brunch this past Sunday. The meal was fantastic, the service was incredible and the decor was the coolest. It was the perfect place to start my day! My family of 5 adults and one toddler all were greeted warmly and only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. And while waiting I really took in the environment. It was so peaceful and relaxing with light purple and blue tones. It felt modern but still inviting, something which is not always achieved with modern. My mom and sister are gluten sensitive so for them it was awesome to order off the menu without worry. And for my dad who hates anything labeled gluten-free was perfectly happy with his meal of eggs and bacon. My mom and sister highly recommended the waffles made with zucchini. I was so torn and ended up ordering one of the specials of the day (and had a bite of the waffles ). I had the popovers with sausage gravy and 2 poached eggs. It was fantastic!! And my toddler son enjoyed bites off of everyone's plate. I look forward to going back next time I'm in the city! read more

Haven for Celiacs and those on a gluten free diet. 100% dedicated gluten free facility, and amazing food to boot! Best breakfast potatoes I've ever had (seriously - I didn't know gourmet breakfast potatoes were a thing but that's what these were), crunchy, crispy and soft on the inside popovers with vegan honey butter and delicious doughnuts. Go go go go go. Even if I wasn't gluten free I'd like this food. I hope this place stays in business for a long, long time - I will be back anytime I visit Chicago. read more

Adorable and very nicely designed cafe. My cappuccino was delicious and made quickly and brought to my table. Blueberry muffin was also great. You wouldn't know that it had or didn't have any gluten. Plus was super fresh with real blueberries- delicious! I sat here with a book while my daughter was sleeping and had such a lovely morning. No one pushed me to leave. Will be back! read more

I have recently gone gluten free. This place is fabulous. I had lunch with two friends: one had panini with Vegan cheese, and the other had the eggs Benedict with Asparagus. They loved it. I had the most amazing grilled chicken gIros over tadzikis, and the most delicious Pita accompanied by a small salad. The Pita had a lovely texture. I have always loved good bread, and finding good bread that is gluten free has been a challenge.. i took some home. The ambiance is very nice, and the waitress was friendly and accomodating. My husband has celiac disease and it's so hard to go out to eat. Even when restaurants claim to be gluten free, he still gets frequently sick from cross contamination. However. THIS PLACE. It is a god-send!!! No outside food is allowed and ALL THE FOOD is certified gluten free so there is no way to possibly get sick. We can get anything on the menu and share dishes. I live right around the corner from the cafe and go there often even though I don't have any type of gluten intolerance. I just like the food and the atmosphere. Two favorite items on the menu are the biscottis and the donuts. I also like purchasing the pizza crusts they sell to use at home. The crusts have a really crispy, rice cake-esque, texture that I like. Full disclosure: Although i really like the donuts, they are not the best donuts in Chicago. For example, Do-Rite Donuts makes a mind blowing donut that I try to avoid at all costs. I think that Wheat's End fills a sweet spot for me in terms of deliciousness and healthiness. While I know that dounts aren't ever healthy, I feel good about the ingredients and the thought process that goes into making them here. My favorite thing about the place is Manny, the manager of the cafe. Super friendly guy, love chatting with him as I am ordering. He lives in the neighborhood, so I am glad that a can support a local business and a neighbor! read more

So, my wife has "celiac" who adds to her already high degree of difficulty with making a decision. I often wondered if somehow god had thrust her upon me to test my patience. I mean, I love her but really don't love waiting in line for hours of my weekend while she figures out what to buy or eat. With that said, I don't suffer any of these delays at this joint because the food is all so good she doesn't even need to make a decision. I'm underwhelmed. The food was nothing special. The tomato soup and spicy potatoes were quite yummy. But damn this place is overpriced. Almost $12 for a TINY half sandwich and a small bowl of soup?! That's ridiculous! And it was good, but not worth that much! If you're going to charge those prices, the food better be outstanding. Our waitress also wasn't great. Very nice, but kind of spacey and then took her lunch break so we had to go up to the counter to get our bill after waiting a really long time and realizing it wasn't coming. Overall it was good food but just too many other factors bringing it down. *I do want to clarify that I knew it was 100% gluten free food before eating there. The people I was with agreed with me that the portions were tiny for the price. And they are both gluten free. So thanks for trying to explain your prices, but it was already understood. read more

In short, they need to work on their efficiency and organization, and getting food out in a timely manner, but the servers were nice and the food was delicious, so I'm splitting the difference and giving them 3 stars. I ate there with a friend yesterday (a Saturday), arriving at around 11am. I like the space, bright and airy, though it does get noisy when full. There also were a couple families there with children who screamed through most of our meal (WHY can't people just take their children outside when that happens?? It was a lovely 70 degree day, no reason to subject a small restaurant full of patrons to your screaming child), so at times conversation was a bit difficult. That aside, *everything* takes forever. My friend and I were chatting and catching up, not in any hurry, so it wasn't a really big deal... but we were hungry, and our food took probably 25 minutes to come out, after we had waited a while for a server to come by and take our order. So unless your stomach can wait about 45 minutes for food from the time you're seated, this may not be the place for you. We ordered mimosas when our food arrived. We slowly ate our food, chatting and taking our time, and we were finished and plates cleared before the mimosas arrived. We asked about them a couple times when our server came by to check on us (and tried to drop off the check, clearly forgetting we were still awaiting our drinks), so we were pretty sure they forgot them, multiple times. It just doesn't take that long to pour OJ and champagne into a glass. The food itself was great. I had the short rib, and the hollandaise sauce and the potatoes (seasoned with fresh rosemary and onions) were out of this world. My friend had one of the breakfast sandwiches, which came on a bagel that was very soft and had a great flavor. Definitely no complaints on the food. I wanted to try the donuts but was full so requested them to go. The server informed me there was an option to buy them frozen then take them home and heat them up... I opted for that option. But still received warm donuts. Oh well, she tried. On the upside, they were yummy when I reheated them and ate the later in the day. Once we were finished with everything and my warm to-go donuts were safely on the table, we were ready to pay our bill. Some time after giving my credit card, our server returned to inform us there was a "backup" at the cash register. Huh? How long can it take to ring up orders and charge credit cards? So overall this was not a bad experience, primarily because my friend and I were fine with a leisurely brunch, and the food really was delicious... Most days though, 2.5 hours to complete a meal and pay would be more than I would want to tolerate. The place was mostly full the whole time we were there, and I'm not sure the space could accommodate many more workers, so not sure what the answer is... but it seems they just don't have an efficient process going. My guess is there is some level of disorganization underlying the long wait times. But, if you have some time on your hands, especially if you are Celiac or have a wheat allergy or other wheat/gluten restriction, Wheat's End is worth a try. read more

I purposely picked a hotel with a paltry continental breakfast one block from here with visions that I would get my breakfast here every morning. But they don't open until 10a, which just doesn't work for us working folks. This is my only beef. So now I am going to try the whole menu in 2 days. Ok so I probably won't make it thru the whole thing but started with a toasted everything bagel. I can't even remember the last time I had a bagel (because Udi's cardboard masquerading as a bagel just doesn't count). Then the upside down oven baked pear ginger pancake. Heaven. And the sweet potato hash. Heaven with a (figurative) cherry on top. Don't worry, I couldn't eat it all and I'm running 8 miles anyway today so stop judging ;) I need to get to that so I can make it back before they close at 3pm. read more

I had to write a review because the food was great and so was the customer service. My daughter has Celiac Disease and it felt so good to walk in there and know that she can eat anything she chooses. She opted for the pancakes and I had the chicken gyro...so good! Everything was freshly prepared. They were busy and there was a small mix up with our order. I stopped in for lunch today (1st time) and I wasn't disappointed. I ordered the Cesar salad with chicken and when it was brought to my table it was huge, enough for 2-3 people. Everything in the salad was delicious and the right amount of dressing. When you normally order a Cesar salad it comes drenched in dressing, but this wasn't the case. We found this restaurant for one of my friends who have to have a gluten free menu. The restaurant decor looks okay since it didn't look that appealing to me. My friend had a quiche with a salad on the side. The salad didn't even look right, it is as if they just threw it on the place. I had a prosciutto Benedict with asparagus and it was okay since I had better prosciutto elsewhere. The coffee was bland but I wished it taste better because I love coffee. I love Wheat's End with it's 100% gluten free menu options. This is the only restaurant I've been able to enjoy sourdoughs bread since I was diagnosed. I always enjoy their grilled cheese and tomato soup. It's delicious! It's not always filling enough but I've been able to order more GF bread ($2) for dipping in the soup and it's always worth it. My foodie cousin enjoys the chicken and waffles and claims he wouldn't otherwise know it was GF. They also have pastries and the cafe is enjoyable. I try to eat here every time I'm in the Windy City. read more

Love this hidden little gem! The food is good and clean, the staff is nice! It's surprisingly packed on weekends! If you're gluten sensitive, this is the place to go-they don't even serve items containing gluten! You can also order gluten free pies and mini bread loaves from them! People think it's "trendy" to eat a gluten free diet but for those of us that know better, head to Wheats End for brunch, breads and bagels that don't make you need to lay down and unbutton your pants after! Next we ordered main courses and they were just ok. I got eggs Benedict and instead of yummy runny eggs I got two tinny hard boiled ones. The English muffin on the bottom was hard as a rock. My friends just got omelettes and seemed to like it. One of my friends asked for a plain toast and got it with butter. So they took his whole plate and came back after 20min with his old dish and new toast Why not just bring one on the side. To top it all of we ordered French toast and again super disappointed. It was dry and dense instead of that satisfying feeling when it melts in your mouth. Wouldn't go back especially with so many amazing brunch spots in Chicago. Wow...so wonderful that this restaurant is succeeding only serving gluten free home made creations. For me, this is amazing because my whole life I have been gluten free and have not had many options while dining out. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with potatoes and it was so delicious! I have an issue finding places that accommodate my dietary restrictions. I have a gluten, dairy and soy allergy. This is the first place I've been to where I actually felt like I had choices! I ordered the gluten-free/dairy-free blueberry pancakes and scrambled eggs. Everything here was great! Our server came to check on us quite often. They had almond milk so no issues with coffee. It is a cute neighborhood cafe with great service, great food and wifi. Parking wasn't bad (we came during the week) and there was plenty of seating. I was very excited to go to an all gluten free restaurant and was very satisfied with my experience. I ordered the blueberry belgian waffle. And a side of 1 organic egg and bacon everything was fresh and tasty. The bacon was a steep $5 and was only 3 pieces of bacon though but it was smoky and crubchy goodness. The belgian waffle was delicious though a tad bit dry given the blueberries were cooked in. I appreciated the hefty serving of 2 waffles since many gf places skimp on portion size. Tap water serving, not even cold, and the chocolate donut feels like heated up in microwave that the inside is cold and stiff, outer coating is melted already. Pancakes are good though, and the bean soup. But lamb burger doesn't worth the price, and more than $15 but doesn't come with any sides, and potato waffles are not crispy or feels not fresh. High time I reviewed this restaurant. Excellent service and food, and they really work on meeting your requests, whether due to dietary restrictions, allergies or just preferences. So refreshing! One of the first restaurants I was ever in that offers coconut lattes, and they are just plain yummy. I will never go back to milk. Ambiance is casual and relaxed, with comfortable chairs and unobtrusive decor. Nice folks, too: the smiles feel genuine. The pastries are heavenly and I have developed a very bad habit of coming by to grab a coffee to go and of course I usually succumb to a vegan chocolate doughnut.
