My husband found this place on Yelp and i was a bit skeptical about it because of the location, but I'm happy we gave it a try. We came in a little after 5pm and it wasn't too busy. There was only one person working the front so service was a bit slow, but the server was friendly. We tried their tots, banger and pulled pork sliders, and wings from the happy hour menu. The foods were flavorful, not greasy, and fresh. The drinks were made right (Jameson with ginger ale and Guinness). The cheap prices are a plus! Quite a gem in that neighborhood. YUM! we've been here twice now. first time we had a Reuben and a Cuban sandwich, awesome. We like the tots better than the fries. 2nd time we were there for weekend specials, boyfriend had bangers and mash I had shepherd's pie both were delicious. The jello shots are amazing we had Irish coffee jello shots for a buck and the Guinness is very good. if you have anything with a pickle they are homemade and Wow good. the owners/cook and service was excellent. On the website they Don't mention the Bartendress Does Not leave from behind the bar(probably in Her job description). The Lottery Games are only Cleaned after a Full 10 minutes after asking regardless of HER busyness, and how Polite You may be because "I don't Gamble," Euphemism for, 'I could care less'. The Happy Hour that goes to 7pm is ONLY beer and wine, no food. The drinks are very well made but the attitude that goes with them is not worth it. Four of us went to Whelan's for dinner and a couple drinks on Sunday afternoon around 4pm. It seemed unusually busy for a Sunday evening; there were about 30 people at the pub. The place was completely understaffed. The bartender had to handle a lot and consequently the service was almost nonexistent. Our drink order was mixed up twice. We ordered the hamburger, mac and cheese, bangers and mash, and chicken fingers. After an hour of waiting, we had only received the burger. When we inquired on the status, the bartender informed us that the meal orders didn't go through with the burger. There was no apology or attempt to make it right. No offer to take our appetizer or a drink off the bill, just some shrugged shoulders. We had to go up to the bar to get the check. We were looking forward to trying the grub but left hungry and disappointed. While the Guinness is a good pour and the restaurant seems clean and newly renovated, there are other Irish restaurants in the city with good food and the hospitality you've come to expect from a Irish pub. I want to give this place another go because it seems like a new restaurant that is figuring out its operation. Plus, like I said, the Guinness is fresh! Please hire additional floor staff (bus person, anything) to help your current staff. read more

Ummmm...wow...it is flu season so probably they were understaffed but we observed only two people running the joint, of course, I felt sorry for them because I've worked with the public my whole life and if you're understaffed, it's not your fault. That being said, if I'm going to give an honest review of my Saturday night experience, we waited forever for food,(over an hr) and when we got it it was slightly above average but lacking in amenities like a ketchup bottle with anything in it etc. The band was great as I love upbeat, beautifull reggae music but we were over the absence of any normal restaurant attention by the time we left. I want to try this place again tho hoping for a little more interaction with any kind of employees hopefully next time we go! read more

On our first visit we met Jody and listened to Irish music all during our stay. That, with the decor and food, made it very pleasant. Bad location and almost no parking but it still had something going for it, or so we thought; that it was more like a genuine Irish pub. We found out it's just like any other bar, only with bad parking but decent food. We went back a few days ago. The bartender was a nice lady with a tattoo of a spider on her chest. The music was blues , at best. She commented they were "tired of Irish music, just sick of it!" But, she said, "We have live Irish music on Saturdays, 7 p.m.. Oh, and the "cook", a tall fella with dirty clothes and long , greasy, hair,beard and mustache, no hair net, and no apron, came walking through the bar every so often which confirmed I did not want to get food from him and seach it for hair and other detritus. We came back on Saturday, May 4th, 6:45 p.m.. The music had already begun and was electric guitar/drums; extremely LOUD enough to hurt your ears. Never heard an Irish tune. They did butcher a Beatles tune ( Com together ) . There were about 8 people in the place. We now know it's just another bar, maybe a little more dirty, not much parking and painful to the ears. NO IRISH AMBIANCE AT ALL!!! How disappointing! We'll never go back. Sorry Jody but I don't expect it to last two more years. read more

I've lived in Portland a decade now, and one of my favorite things about it is its ability to keep surprising me. I'll be real and say what you already know: SE Division, past SE 92nd, is not pleasant and can feel downright terrifying. Maybe that's changing, slowly. But pubs are pubs, and if you walk inside of one and the outside world melts away, you've found a good one. Whelan's is a good one. My dad (props to Division Midway Alliance, located next door to Whelan's Pub) introduced me to this Irish-owned bar. The owner, Jody, is a hard-working and friendly Irishman who grew up in County Cork, on a dairy farm. He has an American wife and three children and he obviously loves soccer. All that aside, dude has the best Guinness pour in Portland, and possibly on the west coast! It's that fresh, yo. Also, some good local ciders ( at time of review, Rev Nat's) and micro-brews (Deschutes, Manny's) on draft as well as a bottled Irish import cider, if you're into that sort of thing. The happy hour menu, which runs from 4-7 PM, offers Caesar salad (it's good, not overly dressed), Irish banger (yum) or pulled pork sliders, a burger, wings, and Paddy's fries, ranging from $3-5 per item. The Paddy's fries are french fries (tasty) topped with corned beef, cheese, red onion, etc., and they are quite good. Didn't think I'd like them as much as I did. My daughter had the chicken strips (not on happy hour) and really enjoyed them, well seasoned. She said they tasted like "a nice piece of fish"; she's five, and says awesome things sometimes. It's pub food done well. Solid. We'd like to go back for the Irish stew, served on weekends. Other things of note: there is a pool room, a small outdoor patio, clean restrooms, and booths as well as tables. They allow minors until 9:00 PM. But one of my favorite things about Whelan's is the music. Irish music coming from the speakers! I've been in too many outer east bars playing terrible music, so the Irish music was a noticeable treat. A refreshing addition to the Mill Park neighborhood. Jody, the new proprietor, is striving to bring a wee "tooch" of the Emerald Isle to East Portland. The draught beers are properly served, the pub food is hearty AND mighty tasty and the atmosphere is truly welcoming and distinctly IRISH! Went looking for a before dinner tipple and found this place in the unlikely wasteland of SE Division St. The outside seemed a little rough, but it was clear the owner was trying to step up the image of the building. I was delighted by the atmosphere and the service on the inside, however! Jody was a wonderful, welcoming host with an authentic Irish accent and sentimentality. We had several drinks, some delicious whiskey, and a great time chatting with the bartender and other regulars. The tater tots were a tasty treat as well! We went here for our anniversary this past Saturday night hoping to have a memorable experience. Boy were we disappointed! The service was non existent! Even though there were only a few customers there. We were not greeted or offered a menu or a drink, so we just sat there like unwanted guests for what seemed like an eternity! Finally, after about 25 minutes, we flagged down a waitress and ordered the shepherds pie and also the reuben sandwich. The food was gross and off seasoned! The french fries were greasy and rubbery like they were cooked an hour earlier! We ordered drinks that never arrived but we were charged for them anyway! I only noticed one person working here so maybe somebody quit, leaving them with a skeleton crew??? Who knows, but I've had better service, and food at Jack in the Box!
