We were recently invited by our friends to a small get together. While there, someone had brought what appeared to be like a cake sampling platter from this bakery. It seemed like a sampler one might get if you went to a shop to do a taste testing for a wedding cake. There was 8 or 9 small slices of different cakes, each being layered cakes. Red velvet, chocolates, white cake with what looked like some sort of berry in the frosting. I tried a few of the chocolate samples. I really wasn't impressed with them. They didn't wow me that is for sure. The cakes were moist but none had any real flavor. There was about 20 business cards in the box, which is how I even knew these came from a bakery as opposed to just someone who decided to make several cakes. I would not be interested in ordering a cake from this bakery if this sampling platter represents the finished product. read more

My wife got a red velvet cake for Mother's Day. We cut and ate the cake that night. The filling appeared to be some kind of cheap white dense something. When my wife told me it was cream cheese, I was so surprised I laughed. The texture was closer to fondant than cream cheese. The red velvet cake tasted dry and a bit old. I don't know how much Whisk cakes cost, but I've heard they're on the high end. I'd guess the cake was 7" and about 6" tall. Tasted like a $10 cake. I recommend asking for a sample taste before picking Whisk over Safeway or Nob Hill. read more

I hate to give a bad review because my family personally knows the owner, but I can't get over how awful the carrot cake I ordered from Whisk Cake Creations was, especially for the price I paid. Coming from out of state, I communicated with Whisk Cake Creations staff via email. As others have noted, they are slow to respond, in fact, I had to send two inquiries before they finally answered me. I understand they must be a busy shop because of their TV fame and may not have that many employees, but I was getting very nervous as my event date was approaching and I had not heard back from them. To feed 25 people, Whisk Cake Creations recommended I order a 10-inch round cake with a clean buttercream finish for $100. Any additional decorations would be extra. I ordered a plain carrot cake and I assumed it would have cream cheese frosting, like every carrot cake I've ever eaten. I assumed "clean buttercream finish" meant the exterior of the cake would be iced in buttercream, but being a carrot cake, I assumed the interior frosting would be cream cheese, which I was fine with. For only a $10 delivery fee within Alameda, the cake was delivered spot on time - I was very pleased! The cake was very simply and elegantly frosted and was enormous. The delivery driver was very friendly. Unfortunately, considering the cost of this cake and the rave reviews, I expected a flavor explosion and delicious cake but was severely disappointed. The cake had buttercream through and through and it was an awful combination with the carrot cake. I guess I am partially at fault for assuming the carrot cake would come with cream cheese frosting and for not confirming my assumption upon ordering the cake. After biting into the cake, I was embarrassed to serve such a poor tasting cake to my family and friends and even more embarrassed that I had paid so much for it. I don't think anyone liked it, I didn't hear anyone say anything good about it and no one wanted more. We had a lot left over and my husband would not even eat it. The cake itself tasted like a box mix, it wasn't flavorful and combined with the buttercream, it was just bland awful. It also had green shreds of carrot, which I just looked up and is caused by too much baking soda in the recipe or a batter that isn't evenly mixed. I feel like for such an expensive cake and such a highly rated bakery, they would take more care in their recipe and at least presenting a carrot cake without green carrot pieces. It was not appetizing to see the green shreds and is the first time I've eaten a carrot cake with green flecks like that. Maybe I'm being especially critical because the week prior in my hometown out of state, I had eaten and served a carrot cake that was beautiful, came with the requisite cream cheese frosting without even asking, was moist and packed with flavor, and was so delicious that I actually closed my eyes and groaned on the first bite. I don't know what went wrong with the cake I ordered from Whisk Cake. Maybe it was a fluke and something went wrong, but I consider the carrot cake from Safeway to be better than the one I ordered and ate from Whisk Cake Creations and wish I had ordered my cake from there instead. read more

Henry was a hero! I lagged on ordering my sister's favorite cake from Tucker's. I called there and found out they don't do baked cakes anymore - Gasp! Thankfully my sister found out that Henry started his own venture. I emailed Henry on a Wednesday and needed the cake the following Sunday. As someone who is extremely picky when it comes to dessert & always has to have dessert, I give a well-deserved 5 stars to Whisk Cake Creations by Henry. We had Henry make my sister's birthday cake for her cotillion & I'm still craving for another slice. When it comes to wedding/birthday cakes these days, I've always felt like you can only have one or the other: a great design or great taste. Henry by far proved me absolutely wrong, you can indeed have both! Planning the cake with Henry was just as fun of an experience as tasting it. He kindly presented all these different flavors for us to try: mocha crunch, strawberry chiffon, red velvet, carrot cake & chocolate. All of which were just so delicious. While we were enjoying ourselves, Henry would ask questions about the theme, the colors of the party, etc. As my sister explained to him her vision for her Little Mermaid cake, we literally watched Henry sketch out her cake & it came out EXACTLY as it did on paper when he delivered it to us the day of the event. (I still can't get over the octopus he put on the cake & the little pearls to look like bubbles.) Because the cake was 3 tiers, we just loved all the flavors so much, we asked Henry if we could make each tier a different flavor & he was like, "Let's do it!" We ended up going for the mocha crunch, strawberry chiffon & red velvet. I'm not even exaggerating when I say this, but this was the first party I went to where every single guest finished their cake. My sister's reaction when she saw her cake was just the cutest thing ever. Henry, How do I begin to thank you for the incredible cake you created for our daughter's birthday? It was a magical production crafted with an incredible level of artistic and culinary detail. The cake, not surprisingly, caught the eye of everyone who attended the party. Both kids and adults oohed & aahed over the the sight. My daughter absolutely adored it and loved that she was featured in cartoon. I appreciated the intricate work you provided of replicating not only her curls, but the collar of her white shirt and the tiny pink hearts on her socks! That level of detail was an unexpected treat. The whole creation was exactly what I'd asked for - pink and purple and sparkly - just on a grander scale than I'd imagined. The colors were perfect, and the detailed stars and 5! layers made for a spectacular display. Then, we got to eat it! It was hard to cut into such gorgeousness, but we took plenty of pictures and then dove in. Wow! There were multiple layers inside each layer, filled with delicious cake and cream and fresh berries! It was beautiful inside and out. Even the adults who rarely eat cake couldn't help trying a piece and were surprised by how moist and tasty it was. One adult told me how much she enjoyed the fondant - describing it as bubblegum flavored and melting beautifully on her tongue. My boyfriend's Mom surprised me with a chocolate cake from this place for my birthday. So beautiful, so simplistic, so elegant. I loved the fact that when you cut into the cake, it looked chocolatey rich, but actually wasn't overly sweet at all. Cake looks dense, then you take a bite and it is SO light. Not a fan of fondant for the taste and texture, so I loved the frosting which looked like fondant--creating that completely smooth finish to the cake--but tasted amazzzinnnng. I sent Henry and email letting him know that we were downsizing our wedding so we would need a smaller cake than originally planned. He responded with by telling me he was sorry we were cancelling our cake, but if we wanted a smaller cake, we would have to purchase a house cake because they are only making those at this time. Clearly twisting my words to make it look like I was backing out of the contract. To avoid any issues, I asked if our $300+ deposit would cover a house cake, he didn't respond. A few days later, my fiancé gets an invoice for the balance of our wedding cake. I followed up with Henry and also asked about the invoice. He responded immediately and apologized for the invoice and told me that yes, our $300+ deposit would cover a house cake and that he would send me a coupon code for one. I never received it. I shouldn't even have to ask for my deposit, they're the ones not making wedding cakes. And I didn't cancel my cake, only asked if a smaller one was possible.
