The White Elephant is intriguing before you even enter the restaurant. They have a beautiful elephant mural on the outside of the building that is eye catching! We walked in and were told to seat ourselves so we did. Patsy was our server who left the table pretty abruptly but visited often to make sure everything was fine and dandy, that made up for it. We ordered everything and it came to us in a timely manner. I personally recommend a blackened salmon with their rice and veggies! Overall a great experience! Cannot wait to return! read more

What came out was mostly iceberg lettuce, a couple of tomatoes and cucumber slices, a piece of what seemed to be cod, and two containers of Heinz honey mustard. Food was not good, no flavor, very average. My husband ordered broiled grouper and said it was very dry and overcooked. I had grouper fingers that were also overcooked. We are locals of over 25 years and are not frequent "flyers" at the White Elephant. We do drop in from time to time for the entertainment and some bar food. The service was great and better than average given the current status of labor shortages in the local area. The food was very average to below average. We had the hamburgers which were a little over cooked for Medium Well and the patties were small. Definitely nothing to brag about and left disappointed in the food. The beer was very cold which was awesome. There was a guitar player/singer and he was good if you like old 70 folk tunes. The music switches out all the time and we have seen some really good local talent come through so it's a bit of hit and miss with the entertainment. In summary if you are at the beach and very hungry or thirsty for a cold draft it will probably be worth the walk over from the beach. If you are driving over just to eat there you might want to go somewhere else unless you just want to drink and listen to the music. read more

The smirk on her face was the first thing, then telling us she was busy, so when she brought us our drinks we asked for the check, so as not to bother her again. Typical "Beach Food". Accessible by boat. Kind of an over-grown Tiki Hut. There arn't many places you can tie up your boat (small) and eat, so I'll be back. I went to this place with my 3 children (15, 9 and 8). My 15 year old boy who is super easy going felt uncomfortable with the amount of drunk, loud adults all over. Inappropriate even for a pub. It was dirty, definitely not COVID conscious and there were people smoking inside the restaurant and while sitting at the bar which was 5 feet from our table. Went to the White Elephant Pub in Englewood today. We have been there several times in the past. Let me say that we return for the location and the water view....not so much for the food, which is just ok. Today we were suprised to see it was not very busy at noon and there were open tables by the water. We asked if we could sit by the water and were told by the hostess that she could not seat us there because she needed to divide customers evenly among servers. What?? This is the first time I have ever been told I could not sit at a prime location for the covenience of staff. Not to mention 5 minutes later the table was given to another couple. I admit I have high expectations when it comes to customer service, as I have worked in that industry, but it is very important to a successful business. read more

I would give a zero if possible. This is the first time i was ever attacked by a hostess and treated so poorly. We came in by boat and we had planned on going to another restaurant - the restaurant told us to park at the white elephant. When we arrived - we walked through the restaurant - my daughter was grabbed and told we can't leave the restaurant. I quickly came back and tried to speak with the hostess. she very rudely said "happy easter" I tried to ask if we could eat there - and she kept saying no. Finally she realized what I said and very rudely said well do you want the bar or do you want a table. The. she attacked me again verbally. At this point I said we will just leave. All we wanted was a place to eat lunch - we were a party of 8. I feared we would receive bad food and service. I have never to say this is the worst experience i have ever had at a restaurant. Well if I could give no stars I would, but I can't. To start it took 15 mins to see a server after we sat (place was NOT busy, it was 1pm) and we put in our drink order, which the pina coladas were good. I ordered the fish and chips and my wife orders the shrimp trunk. My frozen fish plank had blonde hairs in it (I'll post pics) and during our stay all you heard was female employees gossiping about other co workers. We have been here a couple of times in the past, and it was decent, but today was our last time. It took us an hour and a half for 4 people to have lunch. When we arrived, we were the only table seated inside, so they weren't that busy. They took our drink order promptly, delivered drinks, then never came back to take our food order. We got the hostesss to get our waitress, ordered, and waited for over 30 minutes to get our sandwiches. We again asked the hostess to check on our order, as we watched multiple tables get their food when they came after us. Let me qualify this review by stating we got up and walked out without ordering anything. It was dinner hour so I get that's it's a hectic time and perhaps they were understaffed. We waited 10 minutes for someone to clear a table, then waited another 10 minutes for someone to come over and take our order only to find out they ran out of a basic ingredient for one of the items we wanted to order. I had to track down someone to get the table cleared and find out who our server was. I have to echo the recent reviews about this place not really following many COVID safety protocols (only the bus person and a server or two were wearing masks). In fact the parking lot dude informed us that we didn't have to wear masks as they were an open-air establishment . The fact that no one in management or staff really noticed or seem to care that we got up and left was telling too. read more

The third place we had dinner on a vacation to Engelwood Beach. We weren't super stoked due the bad reviews but had a great dinner for much less than the competition charged. Really bad. For fun we tried the three restaurants at the entrance to Manasota--Flounders, Lock & Key, and this place. The other two were totally worthy of praise, the White Elephant, just bad things to report. They don't invest in enough staff so if it's busy, you're screwed. They're rushed and surly. (VERY unlike the competition). If you can't find (your own, no seater- greeter) table near the water, the huge, run down tent canopy over the dining room gets really hot and steamy. Run down, dirty, grittiness aside (great food can be had in such places) the good here is just awful. The fried oysters had a thick and not crispy pancake batter, and they weren't even WHOLE oysters, just prefabbed bits (sysco makes bits like these for cheap oyster-style sandwiches). The oil was old-old-old, so even the fries had a rank edge. The burger was hard, gray, and rubbery (they don't ask how you want it cooked). And here's the real annoying part. All the condiments are on the table in a basket of packets. So for your fries, you have to open 5-6; for your burger, a couple mayos, a couple mustards, a few more ketchups. The center of our table was piled with a few dozen plastic packets slated for a landfill. Stupid. I could go on. Just stay away from this place and go to either of the neighbors. Really. read more

This restaurant was a bit of a disappointment. This was recommended by a local and we were excited to get some fresh seafood, but our experience wasn't the best from the get go. The manager was fairly rude and cut me off multiple times as I was trying to talk, and this was just us walking in to get a table. The food was not good: the fish was over cooked, the fries were hard and crunchy, my "fresh" vegetables were obviously frozen from a bag and were still cool when they were served, the shrimp was very disappointing in size and portion, and the baked potatoes were tiny. The service from the waitress however was phenomenal, the drinks were amazing, and the band was fairly good (played a lot of alternative metal type music). This place would be good for drinks and atmosphere, but not for sitting down for a nice dinner. read more

If I could give a "0" rating I would. My wife and I had lunch there today. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and she ordered the grouper. The only thing good about the pulled pork was the ample amount under the bun, but it stopped there. Dry can't do justice to describing it....the saving grace was the cup of sauce which I applied liberally in a weak attempt to give it some flavor and moisture. My wife's grouper was perhaps one degree above being bad or stale. Our only regret is we didn't send the meals back. Fries were mass produced and over cooked. Oh....by the way....we were directed to sit a table which could hold six by the hostess....just prior to being served the other male host came over and said "you need to move to the end of the table in case somebody else comes.." No "would you mind moving" or "could you move?" VERY rude! Never again.....awful. Even the poor guy singing with a guitar sounded like a poor imitation of a drunk on open mike night. I can only speak to the service and the bathrooms, but neither was bad. Our group of five went for happy hour to catch up and, of course, have a beverage or two. Our waitress did a decent job. She stopped by every time our glasses were low, but neglected to warn us that happy hour was ending soon so we missed out on the last round. However, prices on the domestic drafts were reasonable. The bathroom was 'meh.* We didn't stay for the dinner specials and didn't see many people eating, so I'm not sure about the quality of the food. After happy hour ended, a man set up the evening entertainment - Karaoke - and we left. There weren't many people there compared to how lively their neighbor restaurants and bars were. Waitress was busy, so all business. There must have been a misprint on the menu. I'm deked into thinking "Ipswich" meant "Ipswich, MA," arguably, the best in the world, right? Wrong, in reality, these were SYSCO clam strips (breaded Atlantic Surf Clams), about as tender as if I julienned a Goodyear tire, breaded it and deep fried it. So, I left most of my "Ipswich" clams untouched in my basket, and made a meal of the SYSCO unseasoned fries (if I went to McDonalds, they would at least put salt on my fries). Maybe a little ketchup would make those tasteless fries more palatable? Sure, if I wanted to open individual packets of ketchup and tediously squirt, open, squirt, repeat... Not much good to say. The two stars are because they have tables outside, right on the water. Location, location. By the looks of other negative reviews, it seems the management won't care about another negative review. Great location on the water. Extensive menu to please all palates and dietary restrictions. Everything from fried seafood baskets to deli sandwiches and any appetizers one could think of. Service was professional but definitely not enthusiastic at all. As if the life was beaten out of every waitstaff that I encountered. Seafood was clearly frozen and breaded beforehand and simply dropped in some hot oil to "cook" it. Drinks however were above average. Nice live entertainment while we were there. Fun atmosphere but average/mediocre food especially when the bill arrives. Would recommend for a fun bar night out but not dinner. read more

Visited July 9th, sat on back patio we love live music but we could barely hear each other talk and basically had to Yell to the waitress to get the order correct. We almost left due to the wait from when we sat down until our waitress arrived however she apologized and said she didn't realize our table was hers so we stayed. Food was average slightly high priced for quality we received but we understand costs have risen but we were surprised by some items, wife ordered coconut shrimp and there is no way it was fresh definitely frozen then fried it was unappealing she didn't even eat half and for the price it should be fresh. I had the blackened grouper and it was decent the portion size could of been a little larger but it tasted good. We visited several restaurants in the area just to give all a chance and unfortunately this one dropped the mark for us we prob won't be back probably should of reviewed before going lesson learned. read more
