I've never had to take this as a regular commute, so I can't speak to how it must back up during rush hour. For me, it's a bucolic way to cross the river when I'm traveling from Leesburg to Frederick/Germantown area. It's pretty much that you drive up; wait for the hand signal to get on the ferry; open your window to pay the fare and 2 minutes later, you've crossed the river. The one day I was riding it, I watched someone remove a ring and throw it into the river. Reminded me of the old song "Ode to Billie Joe" and wondering if the ferry was a symbolic substitute for the Tallahatchie Bridge. read more

Had always wanted to take this ferry. Was in Leesburg and headed to Rockville MD Saturday night. There was no wait and we were moving before we knew it. Staff courteous. $5 reasonable. Trip across was quick and east. Look forward to trying it again during daylight. read more

I stopped here for lunch on a bike trip along the canal. I didn't actually ride the ferry (I think I did when I was very small), but I do know that it is a convenient and quick little excursion. The costs for a car have been covered, but it costs about $1 for a person and I think $2 for a bike. The food there was surprisingly delicious. The restaurant is one of those kind of simple places with plastic table cloths and a menu on the wall with movable letters. I grabbed a burger because after biking for 4 hours, I kind of felt I deserved it. It was only after I'd ordered that I noticed it said the burgers were local organic meat. So tasty. I wish I could have gotten one for the road! It also has a nice selection of snacks and sodas. It's right on the towpath, so it's great for bikers. read more

I used Whites Ferry with 2 of my buddies - took the ferry across the river used their parking lot so we could ride on the C&O Canal. Wanted to grab a beverage after our long hot ride and was dissapointed to find the store was closed for the season and all the vending machines out front were empty. No problem we thought, we'll just grab a drink on our way back in Leesburg. Hopped in our truck and was about to merge into traffic to get back on the ferry when the owner pulled up and started yelling at us that we were cutting the line. The fact that his request was nonsensical was the least of the issue - the manner he spoke to me was way out of line. For those that don't know, Whites Ferry is actually privately owned and run by Malcolm Brown (inherited from his parents). If you're like me, you want to support businesses run by quality people, unfortunately White's Ferry is not one of those businesses. There is no way I'm going to patronize a business that treats its customers this way even if they have a semi-monopoly on Potomac River crossings. Beyond the rude interaction with the owner, the ferry service itself is often more trouble than it is worth. The ferry backs up badly during any high volume time of day - rush hour and weekends - to the point where it's actually faster to go up to the Point of Rocks bridge by taking routes 15 and 28. That alternative way is a nice country drive with the added benefit of saving you the $7 the ferry charges. read more

I am thankful that at least one ferry has survived...wish there were more there were in times past as evidenced by roads such as Edwards Ferry nearby. Anyway, it is a quick ride over to MD or VA. 4 Dollars one way or 6 dollars round trip. They operate from May to October...so you only have a couple of days left to try the ferry until Spring 2009. There is a small store on site on the MD side and bathrooms....but the bathrooms are not very nice...bring your own toilet paper and soap...just in case! read more

Very scenic drive out there. I didn't think of going to Leesburg this way from Maryland. The White's Ferry property was part historic part fun it was nice to have the service going across. The distance between the two states was insignificant, it's totally swim-able. I was surprised how close it was. It was not much of a ferry like the one that takes you from Rehoboth to Cape May we hopped on the open platform and wondered when it would start. I realized we were already moving mid-way while the guy was going car to car to collect a few dollars. Before we knew it we were on the other side. I mean it would be nice to have a bridge there and they could charge toll for it but this was more fun! read more

Scenic and efficient alternative to get from MoCo to Leesburg. The ferry ride itself was smooth and couldn't have taken more than 5 minutes. The round trip fare is $8. It seems like it might be best to get across early or late. We crossed from MD to VA at around 9:30 on a Saturday morning and there was no wait. However on the trip back the line of cars waiting to cross to VA snaked all the way back to the road. read more

Female operator made some lame excuse about letting a group (motorcyclist and truck) behind us board first because we were towing a small utility trailer. Then allowed the motorcyclist to smoke his cigar on the barge (their sign clearly states NO SMOKING). So here we are sitting in a cloud of cigar smoke with our windows open because it's the middle of the summer. Don't make up random statements about "safety" and "proper loading" if you can't even regulate your own rules printed on the ferry. read more

White's Ferry seems like an A-Ok way to cross the Potomac. I had seen the crossing a few times before and had always been a bit leery of it but largely because back in 2006 they ran into some issues with the US Coast Guard for being unlicensed. The trip was simple and the price to take the ferry was fair. Not bad if you are out that way and need to get across. read more

Okay, maybe I'm easy to please, but I was so impressed with taking the White's Ferry across the Potomac. I took the long way driving north on Rt 15 on the Virginia side, then turning right at Point of Rocks MD and "feeling" my way to the crossing from the Maryland side. Finally decided to use GPS which took me on the most circuitous route ever but along some of the most beautiful and tranquil scenery ever; you'd never know you were close to DC. Arriving at the ferry landing was like being a part of history with the store and old world buildings. The ferry itself is a step back in time, and I loved gliding the less than five minute trip across the Potomac. I'll probably plan my route better in the future, in fact will likely just take the ferry both ways across and grab a bite to eat at the landing in Maryland in between. An excellent diversion if you're in the Leesburg or Poolesville/Dickerson area! read more

Why no one has built a bridge to traverse the 0.2 mile wide river is beyond me, but I'm sure there has to be a reason. Regardless of my cynicism, White's Ferry is not just convenient, but a great experience. An excellent view of the Potomac and not that expensive either. $4 for one way or $6 round trip is certainly a worthwhile expense. A late night trip on White's Ferry did a great job in contributing to the spooky feel of an evening excursion to Markoff's Haunted Forest on Halloween night. I thought for sure that it would be crowded, but we were 4th in line and only had to wait a few minutes to load everyone up and get moving. read more

Not as old as the White Haven Ferry across the Wicomico River on the Eastern Shore but White's Ferry takes you from populated place to populated place without the traffic. When I'm heading to the Germantown area from central Virginia I always take the ferry for its 19th century charm. Very bad experience. Saturday, 12/1/2012. I tried to call to check the hours. No one answered. I went there anyway. The fare was $5 one-way and $8 round-trip. I paid $8 around 3 PM. I asked for a receipt but I've beet told "No need to..!". I returned around 10 PM and the guy asked for the money even when I told him the story. We stopped to rest and ordered some lunch. We were completely surprised by how good the cheeseburgers were. The young man working the grill took pride in his work. The burgers weren't pre-cut patties. He molded them himself and labored over the grill, never taking his eyes or spatula off those burgers, determined that they would turn out just as we wanted. So we were looking to take the long way back to DC from Leesburg, and my buddy suggested taking White's Ferry. After heading north on US-15 and taking a right on Whites Ferry Road, we waited in queue to load onto the ferry while taking in a wooded view of the Potomac. Rolling onto the ferry, getting towed across the river, and de-boarding was simple. It was $3 per motorcycle, and it looked like the crossing guard would only take cash. He requested we direct any complaints to the captain. Once off the ferry, there are beautiful country roads heading up to MD-28. It's worth heading out there on a sunny day if you're in the area. read more

I have been taking scouts and families and Adaptive Rec participants down the Potomac for a few years and have always enjoyed stopping here for a cool drink or ice cream. As always, in the middle of paddling down the river, while the sun is beating down on you, I would dream of the cold ice cream bars :) This past Saturday however, I stopped in for a hamburger and wow was treated to an awesome mushroom burger-palooza. Great! The staff went out of their way to assist me. After a couple very rainy days of hiking and camping on the C&O canal trail, I stopped at the little store to get some coffee. I was sopping wet and chilled to the bone. They recommended a hotel in Leesburg which would send a shuttle to other shore once I'd crossed. Perfect timing- I got on one of the last trips across before they had to shut down due to high water (I think they stop ferry service if the river reaches 11 feet over flood stage). read more

Watch your money! Just rode the ferry at 6:20 PM on Thursday, May 10, 2012. I handed the guy a $20 bill and told him I was paying for myself and my brother in another truck. He took the money and started to walk away. When I asked him for change he pulled out a $10 bill from the pouch he was carrying and said I only gave him $10.
