Delicious! My son ordered a cheeseburger with onion and mayo, husband a double cheeseburger, and I had the greener pastures; we all had fries! My guys loved their burgers saying they had great flavor. The greener pastures was a delicious blend of grilled veg (zucchini, tomato, red pepper, onion) with melted provolone on wheat toast. So good! The fries were fantastic! Perfectly crispy with a flake salt that was crunchy yet melted in my mouth. Wholly cow is alright. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing, but didn't really impress me all that much. It is a whole 30 compliant restaurant if that interests you. I got a reuben with sweet potato fries and was a bit disappointed. This might be the first reuben I've ever had that came with ungriddled bread, as well as only a small amount of meat. It tastes fine, but lacks the heft of what I like about a reuben. The sweet potato fries are a bit on the tough side - maybe its because they leave the skin on? But it's a bit unexpleasantly chewy post cooking. The cross fit burger is a paleo dream: meat with mushrooms for buns which looks pretty good, albeit a bit small for the price. I had been a big fan of Wholly Cow until today. Their trashy cheesesteak was among the best in Austin. However today, the amount of meat, cheese and veggies was substantially less than pre Covid. This is a cozy little restaurant tucked away in side and old convenience store. Don't let the outside scare you away because the food inside is absolutely amazing. The staff are always friendly and the food is very, very good. I recommend the Paleo Burger. The Paleo Burger is a bunless Burger where mushroom caps substitute for the bun. This is great for those of us on the keto diet. Every once in a while my craving for a good old fashioned hamburger (with a bun) is tough. The other places that just offer lettuce wrap burgers don't do the trick. But the paleo Burger, with the mushroom, soothes my craving! I have been to this restaurant 3 times and every time the food and service have been 5 stars. However, it is my practice that the food and service should be consistent over an extended period of time in order to receive 5 stars. Was at the office on South Congress and popped in for lunch. Unfortunately our first mistake was taking it back to the office instead of eating it there. I'm sure if you at the burger in house it would've been much better. For me personally i wasn't a fan of the flavor of the meat, but co-workers thought it was great. I had their mushroom burger and it is hands-down the best vegan burger I have ever had! From start to finish, this is the best new addition to S. Lamar in years. Yes, it is in a gas station and the ambiance isn't top notch...but goddamn, it is just flat out good food. I have had the whole menu sans the portabello sandwich (blech) and I have yet to find anything that hasn't blown my socks off. The meats they use are all grass fed and organic and come from the owners farm in Fredericksburg. He also must have a hell of a peach tree operation considering he supplies all the peaches for HEB's ice cream division and for Texas Tea, as well. The prices are a little higher than what you would find at your average burger shop, but I feel that you get what you pay for. I go in and crush a cheesesteak and french fries and instead of my usual straight to bed feeling that i get, I am able to continue my day without a nap. These guys run a tight ship. I was there the day the health inspector came and they received a 98% rating, I think. The only marks off were because employees' water bottles were in the food refrigerators. They never fail to ask you how your food was and if you have a problem at all, I have no doubt that they will take care of it immediately. I love this place. Give it a shot. Holy Hamburger Batman! There is a hamburger joint in a convenience store! If you are driving down South Lamar, don't blink, or you could miss them. They are located inside the Star Grill Food mart, just north of Armstrong McCall beauty supply. I was Jonesing for a good burger this evening, so after reviewing a few yelp reviews, I ventured out to pick up a burger and fries to go. So what's so great about Wholly Cow? Wholly is more like good Wholesome ingredients. They have embraced the Austin lifestyle with local grass fed hormone free beef and local organic seasonal produce. In fact, everything in my burger was indeed organic. I ordered a pure single (5.5 oz) beef burger Med Rare with provolone, grilled onions, lettuce and tomato on a whole wheat bun with their pesto mayo. They also have King's Hawaiian Buns to choose from. The "Pure Single with Cheese" $6.70. this included your basic lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions and condiments. They have a list of "Halo Toppers" for an extra $0.39 each or 3/$1. Included on that list are Bacon, Grilled Onions, Roasted Red Peppers, Grilled or Candied Jalapenos, or Mushrooms. I opted for the grilled onions. I added an order of their "Angelic Hand-Cut Fries." The sweet potato was cut right in front of me and dropped into the fryer. I chatted with the owner Jeff, while Joe and Garth cooked up my burger and sweet potato fries. They were friendly and nice and almost disappointed I wanted to take it home, as they were excited to hear my feedback. The bagged up my order and I took it home. I have to say, 3/4 of the fries never made their way into my house. The sweet potato fries were sweet and soft inside and perfectly crispy and seasoned on the outside. When I arrived home, i pulled out the burger, put it on a plate and cut it in half. There is definitely something HOLY about Wholly Cow. The burger was perfectly Med-Rare, juicy and had a great balance of seasoning in the beef. The bun was toasted inside and held up even on the 15 minute trip home. The pesto mayo was a really nice addition to the flavor, but subtle, not over done. I got out of there for $8 and change. It seems a bit pricey for a hole-in-the-convenience-store burger joint... but considering they are locally sourcing their beef and produce and going for as much organic as they can find.... I've been to a lot of burger places all over Austin, but none of them are inside a convenience store. That may scare you off sure, but my parents taught me to try everything at least once. When you pull up you'll see some picnic tables outside. It's a quiet little place inside. The first thing you're going to notice is how nice the owners/employees are. I had never been here before and the guy I talked to took the time to give me some recommendations and what not. Your drink selection is also basically unlimited since you're in a convenience store. Haha. I ordered the Cheesesteak burger or sandwich. (Whatever you want to call it). It was simply awesome. Cheesy. Amazing. Goodness. I added mushrooms and the whole thing just tasted fresh and delicious. The wait is long once you order so sit back and relax. I don't mind the wait at all though because the quality of the food is pretty high. This is not a Wendy's folks! Overall it was nice to hit up this place on a Saturday midday and just relax at the picnic style setup and enjoy a good meal. I hope my Yelp Friends (YF's) don't disown me for this, but I gotta "go against the grain" (or grass, as it were), at least a little. Wholly Cow is probably NOT gonna be my favorite burger in Austin, but let me quickly say that I WILL be back! This was, after all, my first visit, and I've got MUCH more on the menu to sample, though since they're known primarily (it seems) for their burgers, I had to "go with the flow" & have that as my first meal there. I have too many reviews to keep track of to go back and "fix" the ones where I mention a competitor as being "better" (imho) than another, & actually mention the "competition" in the review that's not about THEM in the first place. I've revised my policy since then, and I at least try not to do that anymore. If you want to know my FAVE burger places in town, you'll just have to read through my other reviews. Now that we're done with "Housekeeping": THE GOOD: The owners, and all the staff, are SUPER NICE! Wholly Cow has that "Down-Home Texas" feel to it, the instant you walk through the door: The checkered tablecloths; Willie, or The "Man in Black" playing softly on the audio system in the background; the Mexican Coca-Cola, with REAL sugar. The burgers are mighty tasty! I had the single-patty burger, with Swiss, Portabellas, lettuce, onions, and BACON (goes with everything, huh?). But NO pickles. I was curious about their Candied Jalapenos, and pickles just interfere with the flavor of the Japs. AND they have their own "Private Label" Steak Sauce; I tried a bite without it, just to know what my (relatively? not) "naked" burger tasted like. It didn't NEED the sauce, but I'm a "topping" person, whatever's appropriate for what I'm eating (Ice Cream/Cake's always better with Whipped Cream or Hot Fudge, for example). I like the idea that either regular or Sweet Potato fries are only $1 extra, with a meal. The Sweet Potato Fries were GREAT! There's another place with SP Fries that are somewhat tastier, but they don't LOOK as pretty, cuz they're cut so thick they don't stay together. Wholly Cow makes their OWN Cajun seasoning, very similar to what I make (Emeril's "Essence" recipe; find it on Food Network site); BETTER than Tony's. Cheaper to make yer own too, AND you can adjust the salt content to your preference. Like I said, Wholly Cow delivers a VERY TASTY BURGER! MY "ISSUES": OK, the price point's a little high, but then again, it's local (Fredericksburg) beef, grass-fed; we're in the middle of a DROUGHT (please conserve water when & where ya can); and with the fries only $1 more, I guess it all evens out. As I've said before in other reviews, if ya want CHEAP, go get the Value menu at "DacaMo" (my made up word for...you know; think it'll catch on? I have no idea where that came from). BTW, in case you haven't been paying attention to the Economy, ALL beef will be more expensive in the coming year (2014), so GET USED TO IT, and STOCK UP NOW! The lettuce and onions are FINELY CHOPPED; I'm sorry, but I like big ol' LEAVES of lettuce, and SLICED onions. Everyone has their own preferences; that happens to be mine, especially on a more expensive burger. I disagree with what the "median" estimate the collective Yelp Community has come up with in regard to only ONE "$", each "$" supposedly representing a $10 increment. With a drink and fries, you WILL pay over $10, even if you get a SINGLE. If ya get a DOUBLE, the burger alone will run ya $10 by itself (w/ tax). So in reality, it's a "$$" place; let's be fair. And Onion Rings, for almost $4.50 an order? I KNOW I'll hafta try 'em when I go back, and the pic's look GREAT, but that's a lil' on the high side, unless I can maybe get half an order? When I say that this is a unique eating experience, I mean it. You are eating in a corner store. You sit right by a cooler of drinks and a rows of snack foods. But you know what, this is easily one of the best burgers I have ever had in Austin. You can tell that everything is fresh. The grass fed beef used to make the burger, amazing!!! So I wasn't sure what to expect here and honestly I did not do research before going. I just knew there was this burger place down the street from work that I keep passing and needed to check out. So I finally pulled in on my lunch break and was pleasantly surprised with the result. I ended up getting the single cheeseburger. I was tempted by the reuben on the menu, but it seemed like the whole thing this place had going on was the burgers so I had to get one. I think I made the right decision to start off with. I also ordered a side of fries to go with my burger. Now what I was shocked to see was that this was actually a convenience store too! And they had a nice selection of craft beer and wines. There were also all kinds of specialty foods you could purchase and they had Dublin pure cane soda on the fountain. My food was ready in no time and I sat at one of the tables inside. I bit into my burger and was feeling it. It was seasoned well and delicious. On my next visit I will probably order the double cheese burger because I would have liked the patty to be a bit thicker but it by no means was super thin. When I first realized that everything was organic and grass fed I was actually a little concerned that it might be dry, but that was not the case. The fries looked like they were hand cut and fresh. Meat eater review: My quest for the best cheese steak, in Austin, is nearly over. I visited this convenience store with my sister and a friends. Walking in it looks like any mom and pop shop. But then you turn right and glaze over as the smell of delicious burgers assaults your senses and leaves them bleeding but alive on your face. Just that good. After you recover, the menu is simple and concise. I proceeded to order the Holy Batman sammich. Yes it's the Holy Batman!! Get it trashy like i did. Only time you can get trashy and still feel good about it. The sweet potato fries were good, straight cut, skin on, with sea salt. After ordering you can get your drink either in a Styrofoam cup or off the shelf. This store has the friendliest staff. The guy who took our order was pretty knowledgeable. Always a good trait for front of the house. The chefs, not cooks, looked professional and looked like they enjoyed serving high quality grass fed burgers to any and all that visited. When i went to get a drink i decided a Real Soda was my best bet. Dr. Cane quenched my sweet tooth. Then i found out that the Fredericksburg peaches in the front were actually being turned into a peach tea. Which after sampling a whole bottle, i thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a bit ... bland but they had siracha on the tables and that made it perfect. It was also very warm in there. From the moment I walk in the door I liked this place. It feels like any convenient store greasy spoon you would walk into in small town America. Yet, alas, I'm pretty sure those places aren't serving up 100% grass-fed, hormone free beef. I think the guy at the counter actually told me that the owners uncle even raise these cows himself. While a tad on the expensive side, it is evened out if you choose to go with the Halo Toppers. You basically get to add 3 extra toppings for only a $1. Most places would charge you a dollar alone to add bacon, so I'm okay with the price. It also didn't hurt that everything we had was excellent. The burger had great flavor, was cooked perfectly and had a fluffy, mildy sweet bun. They need to work on their timing a bit, as I was already done with my burger by the time the fries and onion rings came out. The fries were a bit on the greasy side, but come on, they are fries and I still enjoyed them. The onion rings, however, were definitely worth the wait! I had lofty dreams for my first go at Wholly Cow. When I left, I was feeling a little underwhelmed. The more that I thought about it, though? My perception of them was to blame for that. I'm not going to eat again for days." feeling that some burgers leave you with. If I got a double, I might easily say the opposite. That could be too much. I really felt like I was eating something that someone would make me at their home. I was able to sample both the regular and the sweet potato fries. I'm a sweet potato fry FIEND, you guys. Seriously. Unfortunately, I'll report that they need to work on them here. The regular fries are really excellent. They're a little greasier, but they have a better crispiness to them and overall flavor. The sweet potato fries are just okay. They do the job, but they're definitely not a must-get item. A lot of people speak about it being hard to find, and for myself it was not? I was already aware of it. My dining companion lives in the neighborhood and can actually walk here if he wants, but he ended up driving right past. So be sure to map it out before you go. It's right across from Rockin' Tomato and Kerbey Lane. It's a relatively unassuming convenience store, but it works. I will say, one thing I'm not sure about is if the burger counter and the convenience store counter are totally separate. There aren't drink options on the burger menu, so are you supposed to select it from the convenience store first? Can I pay at the same counter? These are all questions that I could have asked and gotten clarification on, but that it isn't clear from the get go is something that could be fixed. This is located in a convenience store, and although they have a good beer and wine selection, you actually cannot drink on site... The burgers are ok, nothing to write home about, and for $7, I would be expecting much better tasting burgers. The taste of the burgers was a little dry and definitely bland - the only thing you could taste was the heavy use of pepper - and I LOVE pepper, but not when it overwhelms everything. There are a few picnic bench style tables in the restaurant, not very comfortable. We also ordered the onion rings, and again - it tasted more like fried pepper with some onions than onion rings. They asked if we wanted their pesto ranch sauce, was interesting tasting - not necessarily good or . Lastly, we asked for ranch, and it was definitely something like hidden valley ranch. Overall my stomach didn't feel that well after this, and honestly there was nothing memorable about their food - outside of the fact that they love pepper. Monday $5 Burger Singles Friendly staff - they recognize old faces My brother brought me here. It was my first time. Local everything. No chemicals. Located in a Food Mart but don't be deceived! If you've ever watched Spongebob Squarepants, think about the Krabby Patty. Didn't it look perfect and delicious and you always wondered what it tasted like? I've ordered on Uber Eats multiple times. Each time getting better. Really big fan of the double with grilled peppers, onions, and mushrooms. Did get onion rings that could be a little more seasoned, but they improved on them being less oily. Can also get Yerba Mate and there aren't many restaurants on Uber Eats that offer them in the can. This is the worst burger I've had in Austin. The meat was practically a hockey puck. Asked for pickles, lettuce and tomato and had they actually followed instructions that might have saved this burger but all they could manage was a copious amount of mayo which I definitely did not ask for. Theres too many good burger places in Austin to waste money on this. Do better. read more

I literally love everything about this entire place! From the location to the food to the greatest ( I think owner older guy) to all the employees! The food is to be summed up in basically two words. (Done Right) I have gotten take out from here at least 15 times the only time I EVER had an issue was one time my burger was soaking wet but hey things happen it still tasted great I just had to eat with a knife and fork. read more

Well, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't particularly good either. Don't know if they use a seasoning on their beef or if it was the ketchup, with I didn't care for on the fries, but it tasted a bit... strange. Really nice people though. There are much better burgers around. Doubt that I'll be going back. read more
