I used to love this restaurant. Tonight, after being seated for over 10 minutes and having no server contact, we had to ask the hostess if a server was assigned to us. No apologies, but a server finally showed up several minutes later. The steak au poivre was (1) not as described on the menu, and (2) terrible, fatty, grisly meat that the "chef" attempted to disguise and cover in a dark flavorful sauce. When we complained to our server, she said she'd let the kitchen manager know to "choose better" cuts next time. Can't recommend one of my once favorite restaurants at any level tonight. Probably won't be back. There are plenty of restaurants in Douglas-Saugatuck that care about their service and their customers. read more

Ate here last night with some friends... It was really busy so we ended up just having dinner and drinks at the bar. The bartender was very nice and the burgers that we ordered were really good! The sweet potatoe fries were so good and different than normal fries. The only thing that was a little bothering was the fact that the three of us received a check that was all on one which normally wouldn't be a problem, however two of us didn't have cash... When we asked to have the bill split they seemed very annoyed that we had asked and could tell they didn't want to take the time to do it. Besides that small issue things were very good:) read more

This lace was very tasty. On this street, it can be hard to find a meal during the day. All of the restaurants seem to have weird daytime hours, but if you catch the Wild Dog grille while it is open, then you will have a good meal. I come to Saugatuck/Douglas a couple times a year and I have never been disappointed with a meal from Wild Dog Grille. And everyone I've brought there raves about it. Just reading the wine list makes me want to order every bottle. We love that they offer so many great local beers. Their crabcakes are incredible. The sweet potato fries are the best I've ever had. And the crème brulee was pure perfection! My friend ordered the burger (and then we went back the next day for lunch and ordered the grilled cheese!) and talked about it for days. It is unusual to find food this good at a place that is this casual and unassuming. I truly cannot recommend it highly enough. read more

My wife and I had dinner on the patio yesterday evening. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed. The pork enchiladas and chicken parma-cota (if I'm remembering the name correctly) with a lemon caper sauce were both excellent. The bartender did a good job making my wife's cocktail. Came in on a Sunday there was no wait, which was nice. I ordered the fish tacos and they tasted pretty good. The minor complaint about the food was that they served the fish in a huge tortilla blanket and the sauce was so drenched it was super soggy. Biggest complaint was the disgusting sconces on the wall looked like it was decorated early for Halloween...... so many cobwebs. It was Labor Day afternoon and my family and I were hot after a hike to and from Saugatuck Dunes beach. The patio seating next to the Wild Dog Grille looked cool and inviting, so we gave it a try. My son's hamburger came a bit overdone for his taste, but my daughter loved her calmari, my wife said the spring rolls were very good, the crab cake was tasty, and my seared Ahi tuna salad was also good, although the dressing could have been more interesting. The decor inside was very pleasant, but the patio was great. It's one half of what was probably the footprint of a previous building, and fills the space between the Wild Dog and the building to the south, with tall windows letting light into the restaurant the whole way. An iron fence separates it from the other half of the space, which belongs to a garden store. The garden store's half is and attractive mini-garden full of plants, garden sculptures, and a fountain or two, which really adds to the ambiance. The tables all had umbrellas, which nearly made a complete roof over the space, and the armchairs had springs which gave them just the perfect amount of bounce. The only sour note was no fault of the restaurant: the two men at the table next to us were smoking through most of our meal, and the smoke kept drifting our way. I would have asked to move, but the only free tables were at the front of the patio, and had a bit of sun on them, which would have made them hotter than where we were. I would definitely eat there again. read more

Went to Wild Dog on 8/3/11 and had a so-so experience. First and foremost, the decor is kinda on the tacky side...the elephant tusks by the bar, the deer/antalope mounted on the wall, and the pictures of wild game in the bathroom. As for the food, they did not give you alot of fried calamari, but did give you a hearty house salad with your meal. The main course was enjoyed by all, except for the fact it took a long time to come out (I'd say at least 45 minutes. I had the talapia tacos which were outstanding...they give you two full filets and were very tasty. Service was OK...our drinks were refilled and the waitress was polite. One negative point was that we weren't even offered dessert, which I thought was kind of weird. read more

Stopped in for lunch while traveling down 131 to check out Saugatuck -- which was packed with tourists. Very clean, comfortable, but upscale design and atmosphere. Order the turkey salad sandwich and gf order a salad. Both came out quickly, presented well and were tasty. Server (Chris) was great! My husband and I went here for an early dinner a couple of weeks ago. It's a smaller place with a lot of the space devoted to the bar area. We wanted a booth, though the only booth seating was next to either the bar or the bathrooms. We ended up near the bathroom, which isn't a pleasant place to eat a meal. The waitress was nice, brought us water and dropped off our menus. There were 2 beef entrees, 1 chicken entree, 1 salmon (fish) entree, and 1 vegetarian entree. That was the dinner menu. We love this place and tend to dine here a couple times per week. The drinks are great, service attentive, food is good, and owners are friendly and visible. The wild dog burger may just be the best burger in this part of Michigan with Gorgonzola, Cajun spices, and a grape tomato jam of some type. Try their side salad with chili lemongrass vinaigrette dressing. Amazing! Recently, we've started having their filet mignonette. Wow, as good or better than steaks we've had at NY steakhouses. It's really that good. It seems they aren't open on certain days of the week, so check before going but definitely a spot we continue to love! read more

Best ribs this side of "Twin Anchors" in Chicago! Fall off the bone with a delicious sauce, zippy but not too spicy just right. The fish tacos, wasabi salmon and crab cakes are equally as good. Our group of five had a very nice meal and good service on a Thursday night. The frites were really good. Everyone enjoyed the grilled cheese, pizza and coconut curry dishes. I had the ribs, which had too much BBQ sauce but were otherwise delicious. Fall-off-the-bone tender. The corn bread waffles and homemade pickles on the side were really good. It's so refreshing to get great sides rather than the usual corn on the cob or cole slaw. One tip is that the curry dish was quite large...enough to share or take home as a second meal. read more

Eric, our server, was astonishingly bad, even after we asked him how his day was going and if he was swamped. He said that it was actually a really slow night. When I asked how the grilled fish of the day was prepared, he said it was on the menu and sped away. In addition, when I asked for bread to go with the mussels, he gave me a hard time, saying the kitchen didn't like to give it out. Really? We ordered drinks, apps, expensive entrees, and I can't have bread with the mussels? He grudgingly got it for me, and it was white bread, as in, some kind of spongy wonder-bread batter-bread stuff. I kid you not. I couldn't have a heel of French? There were other highlights (one of our party wanted bacon on his entree and Eric laughed at him, before saying, oh sure). Then of course, there was his tendency to start walking away while we were still asking him questions. That said, my food was only okay, though the green beans with my way-too-salty scallops were quite good, and the orzo with chevre good as well. The mussels were slightly overcooked, as was the shrimp. But seriously, Eric? You are one of the worst servers I've ever had. BTW? I waited tables in NYC for several years. I really empathize with servers. So, bad job Eric. And Wild Dog: foodwise? One of my party got a burger and liked it, but your salty scallops were pretty weak. read more

IF THEY'RE BUSY, DON'T BOTHER!!! We will NEVER go back. On 7/17 a Thurs. evening, 3 adults, around 7pm. Got a drink from the bar, waited for a table about 30-45mins. Three tables open in bar area. Told there were people at the bar taking them. Really? Then why isn't the childlike hostess asking them to please take their table, as there are a bunch of people waiting? Poor training. Get table.....now wait for waitress. Order appetizers (crab cake is good). Ask question about menu item, waitress says she'll ask, disappears, never did get answer. (I now notice that most people sitting outside on patio are NOT eating. Appear to be waiting.) We are now into this by about an hour and a half. The waitress appears. She says they got slammed with 2 large groups. We now ask her if we should just pay for our apps & go, (which was my gut feeling) or if she can give us a timeframe to get dinner. She says roughly 30mins. We believe her & stay. BAD MOVE. An HOUR later (as we're looking for our missing waitress to tell her we're leaving) we receive my burger, a piece of salmon & a small steak. Burger overcooked, btw. My husband has had enough BS, has lost his appetite and is pissed. Politely tells the waitress he doesn't want his dinner, he wiil pay for the other 2 but take his off. He will gladly speak to the Mgr. Ashley, Mgr., keeps repeating that they had these 2 large parties, and a cook was out. (MY problem, how?) My husband said he can appreciate that, but they should have conveyed that problem when we expressed our concern about the wait time. She was unconcerned and snotty. Through all of this, mind you, we continually told the waitress that we know it was 'not her fault' for their time management issues. They take off his dinner, waitress asks if he wants to take it home, he says 'no, he didn't pay for it.' We again tell her we know it's not her fault. He pays the bill & tips the waitress in cash. She returns with his card, And then, before she walks away, ( NOW HERE'S THE KICKER), she says "You know, the time you started at this table was only an HOUR ago. I looked at the receipt time and it was only an hour." YEAH, an hour since we ORDERED ENTREES, YOU SNOTNOSED PUNK!!! What about the hour and a half before that???? I couldn't believe she opened her mouth. Of course she waited until AFTER he tipped her. THIS IS TRULY THE WAITING ROOM FOR EVERDAY PEOPLE ACROSS THE STREET!!! They know what they're doing!! Just had lunch at the Wild Dog and we really enjoyed it. We had a table outside on a beautiful day. I had the meatballs stuffed with gorgonzola cheese, a nice glass of wine, and flourless chocolate cake for dessert. All were excellent. My husband had a bowl of the corn soup, the gourmet grilled cheese, and a beer. He enjoyed the soup and the beer, but thought the grilled cheese had too much spinach and artichoke on it. This was one of our favorite restaurants when we were on vacation in Michigan. We have been coming here for several years. Something has changed for the worse. Tonight when we came in for dinner the place was not busy like it usually is. My wife and daughter ordered the tilapia tacos, their favorite dish. I ordered the burger like I normally do. When he took my order and asked if I wanted to order a side with the burger. I asked doesn't the burger come with fries? He said not any longer that sides cost extra. It was kind of a shock considering that the burger cost almost 15 dollars, you think you could get some fries with it without being charged extra. So I skipped the fries. When our food came my wife and daughter were disappointed to see that their tacos only contain half as much fish as they used to. My burger was not as good as it used to be, the pretzel bun was dry. We decided tonight we would never come back. Since this was one of our favorite places I thought I would share my thoughts with the manager. The guy who manages the place look bored as I tried to explain to him what we experienced and why we would not come back. I guess he just doesn't care. I guess that is how I would characterize my experience at this restaurant, no one really cares. Well guess what I don't care to patronize this restaurant any longer. read more
