We are an 19-unit 105-year old co-op with a boiler in our basement. After years of repairing a 25-year old boiler, the latest inspection proved it was irreparable. We coordinated a later date for installation, and everything went according to their protocol: what each day would bring, what the noise level would be, what they would need from us, plus who would be installing the new/dismantling old; who would be doing pipework; who was in charge of electrics, plus timeframes for each, adding emergency shutoffs, cleaning up after each day. I have used Stoker for over 15 years but a recent transaction has soured me. Stoker installed a new furnace 3 years ago and I have it serviced by them every year. This year, the service revealed no problems. But a month later there was a leak. Technicians came out and found a part needed to be replaced. I was charged $352 which I felt was unreasonable given that only a month earlier I had paid $370 for service and check up that did not find the problem. When I called I was told that the area that was leaking was separate from the areas included in the maintenance service. It is a part that Stoker installed, so now me wonder what other parts they don't check but charge for. I will regretfully pay $700+ for something that should have been caught earlier. Just had my annual service on my sixty year old boiler, Matthew came exactly on schedule, went over the entire system, cleaned the burners, checked all the valves and circulator pump, and replaced the thermocouple as they do yearly. We have used Williams Stoker Heating to do the annual service on our boiler since we bought the building in 2010. Always very pleased with their work. In December we were having heating issues. They came out and informed us that it was time to replace the 70 year-old system with a new boiler. Last week Josh & Jose did an incredible job removing the old system and replacing it with a new much more efficient boiler. They explained everything, and made sure all the baseboard radiators were working before leaving. They even removed all the old equipment and cleaned up after themselves. I thought I left a review for this company back in 2020 but apparently not, so understand that my review is SOLELY about my experience working with them between 2020-2022. I have no idea what they are like now. However, it'd be hard for me to believe that they aren't the informative, professional and timely crew they have been during those two years. I talked to quite a few people here, but I feel like I may have talked to Caroline more than a couple others (Andrew and Brittany). Our association had a new hot water boiler installed before I moved in, and they would come out annually to check on it. I don't remember any of the techs' names. I just remember they patiently explained the process of inspecting the water boiler and answered any questions I had (just to understand the process). But my five-star review is especially because there was a time in my unit when it was absolutely freezing. I thought it was just me until a couple other owners complained about the heat too. The Customer Service people had many suggestions for how to better assist with heating so it was even throughout the building instead of being super hot with some units and cold in others. If I ever needed individual service with them, even if the new condo board worked elsewhere, it'd 100% be with Williams Stoker if I could. They're just a really solid company. Called them to get on the books for boiler repair. They took down my information and said they'd call back. She did note that they can do boiler repairs. Several days later I reach out again and they said we will call you back in a bit. They called later to leave a long message noting they were "too busy to take on our boiler." But the guy suggested we purchase their service agreement in the spring so that next time this happens they can come by and help out. Seems like they just wanted service agreement business, however not interested to help out when needed even though their website states they do boiler repairs. I wish they would've just told us from the outset that they aren't taking new business. Instead they wasted our time and kept us on the hook for one week while our house was cold. Then was given a day for service. I took the day out of work. They were a no show. They called to give me names of other companies to call. They should have said they were too busy, instead of keeping me on the hook for over 2 weeks with a non working boiler. If you call them, you're rolling the dice. read more

Our basement heat stopped working. We were getting heat to the upstair apartments but not the basement. This occurred several times before. The last time was over 20 years ago. It is usually the pump that goes out. Well we called several companies to come out and fix the problem and none of them could do it. Stoker believed that the radiators were clogged and it would cost us $1710. This was in April. Summer was around the corner so we decided to wait. September comes around we call Stoker to have them do the job. We are told that they only do that job in April. They are still doing air conditioning installs and repairs. What a joke! read more

Absolutely terrible and disorganized. They charge $112 for the first 30 minutes and $28 per 15 minutes after that - these are top dollar prices and they don't have the service to match the cost. I booked an appointment days in advance and no one called to confirm my timeframe, and when I called I was told someone would arrive between 1-4PM but no one ever showed. They also flaked on an appointment my building had booked in the fall to service our boiler. They're a joke, spend your dollars elsewhere. read more

The condo that I live in had hired this company to install a boiler, boy was that a mistake. Besides issues with office and installation workers (they do sub contract out work). The equipment that was installed was a new type of modulating burner, ever since they installed the boiler we could not get heat to the far end of the building, after many visits, trial and error, missed appointments, etc. we gave up and called another company. The other company had lots of experience in picking up the pieces from jobs such as ours. Turns out they like to install two electronic low water safety switches, instead of the normal one mechanical and one electronic, I suspect this is done for cost. A cost savings they do not pass along! This electronic low water switch is mounted to a homemade plate which is then mounted to a cast iron body from another manufacturer, the parts were not made for each other. This low water switch shuts the boiler down when a low water condition is sensed, waits, feeds the boiler, burner purges, ignites, then starts making heat, takes almost 5 minutes. Mechanical switches don't work this way. The new company I used noted this, removed this device, installed the correct manufacturer recommended device. Presto! We have heat, lower gas bills, life is great! Don't get me started on the feet and feet of bx used to wire the boiler screws through inspection panels and a phoned in job of burner adjustment, that's for a whole other review. read more

My boiler went out last January 2024, I called William Stoker along with other companies to give me an estimate to repair my boiler. Turns out that I needed a new boiler, and they wanted 28,000.00 which was overpriced but considering it was the coldest day of the year, and all the other companies couldn't replace the boiler for a couple weeks. So, I decided to go with William Stoker, they came out and replaced it, the crew did do a nice job, however the contract stated that they would replace all the return vents, Steve who was the estimator told me that they would cut out all the old stuff and replace with proper new vents, it took almost 1 year to get them back and then they just wanted to replace the vents with the same vents that were on their which were just radiator vents. I withheld payment and told them that I would pay in full when the job was completed. they then sent me to collections; I contacted my lawyer and collections stopped immediately. I then received a call from a manager, Ditmore, who told me that they would come back to do the job correctly, the way it was supposed to be done he asked me in return I would pay them and write a good review for them. They came out and I still have 2 vents which they did not remove. In good faith, I paid them 10,000.00 of the 13,444.00 that I owed them, and they sent me back to collections. I've decided to just pay them and never do business with them again, this is a company that is run by thieves, their employees are awesome however the company does not hold up their end of the bargain, I recommend Roberts HVAC out of Northbrook Ill. Our condominium association has used Williams Stoker for over 40 years. Their service is always spot-on. I had a chance encounter with two of the younger members of the service team, Jordan and Isaac. They are wonderful examples of the high standards W.S. sets for its on-site technicians. They are polite, clean and exuded confidence they would be able to fix the problems one of our owners was having. The call took much longer than anticipated; yet, they maintained their good natures. I happened to encounter them as they were finishing their documentation, and was asked the last time our boiler was serviced. When I replied we do it annually, Jordan commented that although it looked a little dirty, it was in fine shape. BTW, when the old boiler was beyond repair, Dittmar engineered a plan that enabled us to purchase the unit we not have. My parents have been using the services of William Stoker for over 30 years on their real estate properties. They have done services on their past 5 unit building located in east rogers park and I can remember them repairing furnaces/boilers. On Dec 2013, they have replaced an old furnace in a 10 unit building located in the suburb of skokie. The cost of the new furnace amounted $12,500.00. It was a one day job. They removed and scraped the old furnace. The old furnace had been a big lunk of metal looking almost like parts from an army tank. Installing the new energy efficient furnace, they showed the operation of the machinery. Besides replacing the furnace, they would even show up on emergency cold days if one of the apartments did not have heat. They would bleed the pipes and the heat starts to come into the apartment unit. Winter of 2013-2014 had been a very cold winter and William Stoker efficiently made emergency calls with the utmost professionalism On Nov 2013, William Stoker replaced a pump that regulates/triggers the heat into a 16 unit building. The cost had an amount of $2,450.00. A mechanical pump had a malfunction causing delay of heat into the apartment units. Heat would come on and off with a strange rattling of the pump. William Stoker diagnosed the problem and made necessary replacement. In conclusion, this company does very well with commercial properties. Williams Stoker and Heating built up a dedicated customer base because of their professional expertise, know how and trust. They were efficient and treated people dearly. Today, with a phone number area code in far south suburban Chicago, I wonder if this is the same original company that built a solid reputation over the years? Waiting 8 to 12 weeks for someone to come out to maintain your boiler for the season is not the type of expeditious service that customers received in the past from Williams Stoker and Heating Company. We have an old house with an old boiler that Williams Stoker has kept in fine repair for the last 26 years. They come every summer for a checkup and minor maintenance which gives us peace of mind and keeps us cozy all winter long. We have had only one emergency call when a pipe froze and broke in one cold night in 2015. When that happened, a serviceman came at 11:00pm on a Saturday night. (amazing!) He fixed the problem quickly with professionalism and a smile. We will be loyal customers until our old boiler gives up--and when it does, Williams Stoker will be the team to replace it. Have a noisy radiator. 1st appointment the guy shows up, shims the radiator and says this might or might not work. It did not. second appointment, the guy checks the pipes in the basement, adds shims to the radiator and replaces vent. Still not fixed. Third appointment, they tell me it will be between noon and 4. They don't show up. I call, they make excuses and says someone will call me back. No call. I call again and again no call back. Not sure what has happened there-they fixed several issues on the first try previously. read more

Our condo association had gotten an estimate from Stoker a few months ago because we knew our water heater was going to go, but we felt it better to get everything we could out of it. Well, three nights ago it finally bit the dust. We called Stoker and they installed a new boiler NEXT DAY. Fantastic service and our water was only freezing for about 5 hours. New owners and not nearly the same quality or service as before. The only person at that company worth anything in that business is Colin. Dittmar and Kevin the owners are the rudest, most mysogynistic most disrespectful people I've ever contracted with in my life. I had a new heat pump installed and they were contracted to also correct some existing piping problems with the existing relatively new boiler at a combined cost of over $22,000.00. Kevin was rude beyond belief. When any questions were asked or something that wasn't installed properly or worse not to code which was the case with the conduit they installed for electrical, and then pointed out, Kevin became outright despicable. They corrected it but I paid the price for knowing code and how it was agreed to be installed in the first place. I am an architect with 30 years of interior architecture and design experience. I don't have one bad review or complaint in that time. I may not know everything but I expect a company to at the very least, be respectful and decent. There work was ok but they didn't finish the details that would have completed the job properly. Once they were paid it was goodbye, we are done with you, and good luck getting them back! Don't use them if you need them to come back to correct something or just simply finish a job. And especially don't them use if you want any type of professionalism and any respect as the consumer. I had such a great experience with this company and will be a lifelong customer. My steam boiler stopped working on a Wed night in January (it was really cold out). The place that had maintained it came out, said the tank was cracked and that it would be $14k to install a new one, which they couldn't do until Monday/Tuesday (4 days later). When I called Williams Stoker on Thursday morning Andrew told me he would see what he could do. He found a unit for me (they called after hours because they knew the distributor) and had it installed by late Friday evening. They were thousands less and had it working in 36 hours. Amazing!! The installers Louis and Davis stayed until 8 pm to get it finished that night. Everyone that I worked with through the process was really honest and knowledgable. They did follow-up work later to get a final radiator working at no charge. This company was recommended to me by friends and I'm honestly so grateful that I found them. When your house is cold suddenly, you really are vulnerable to being taken advantage of. I have so much respect for all the folks at this company for treating me fairly and with a lot of kindness in my hour of need. read more
