We decided to go to Willie's Grill & Icehouse for dinner. I like to go there cause you can just order your food and drink, then sit down. For those who have not been before: you'll go inside and go up to the counter. They will have a big menu, and you get whatever from it, and you get your drinks as well. They will take the order, then give you a receipt, and you sit wherever you want. Then your waiter or waitress will bring you your food, and if you want something else to add, they will do it at your table. After your meal, you pay with them as well. For us, we got an appetizer: chips with salsa and queso. Then, for our mains, I got the SHRIMP PO-BOY with blackened shrimp and onion rings. My wife got the Grilled Chicken Caesar, and chicken tenders for our kids. Everything came out fresh and hot. No issues with how the food tasted at all. The only thing I wish was for more shrimp on the Po-Boy--don't get me wrong, it's still bomb and I would get it again, but I want to taste more shrimp than bread. My wife really liked her salad; they didn't skimp on the chicken at all. Most places only give you some. The kids, of course, were happy with chips and salsa, and of course chicken and fries. The atmosphere is pretty chill; they have signs everywhere and TVs for the games, even a little arcade for the kids. I came to Willie's with my parents after coming into town from Austin. It's not fast casual, but it's not a true sit-down restaurant either. Let me explain. You walk inside Willie's, and it seems like your traditional grill restaurant, but you don't wait for a table. You order at the counter for your first round including your meals, where they give you a number to place at your table. From there you sit down, and a waiter comes to you. Our guy this time was Alex, a charming and attentive guy who checked on us frequently, making sure our drinks were filled and we had what we needed. We ordered some of their fried onion bites and their fried pickles as an appetizer alongside our main meals. The travesty was that we were served our mains before our appetizer even came out. They were quick to bring us the appetizer after our meals came out, so it is what it is. For my main meal, I got their patty melt, which was sturdy with two thick slices of Texas toast, plenty of grilled onions (a must), and two patties. It was excellent. The fries served alongside were crispy and salty. As for the appetizers, I liked the crunch in their fried pickles, but did not like the onion bites. I like fried onion. I like grilled onions. I like onions, but the bites just felt overstuffed with onions to the point that it felt like I took a bite out of a raw one like an apple. I would go for the regular onion rings. The bar service is pretty nice. They have a solid selection of beers on draft plus bottles and cans, and the place's atmosphere is quite nice. Overall, I think it serves its purpose and it is a nice spot. I think the service flow is unique, but it actually works well that you've already ordered by the time you sit down, while still feeling somewhat like a real restaurant. A guy like Alex makes the experience worth a trip. Like every good icehouse, they just need a TouchTunes so I can terrorize the patrons with my terrible taste. The service was not up to par but the manager tried to help during my order. I had questions since it was my first time and no one was really helpful until I spoke to him and placed the order. They do not greet you or help you upon arriving. Since it was my first time, I sat down and waited 15 mins before I learned that you order at the counter then they bring you your food. My seafood boil was NOT good. It was watery, powdered tragedy in a bowl lol. My crab legs were dry (barely any food inside) and browned with black specs/black spot disease... The shrimp was good and the sausage was quality. My server ended up being kind. She came by once and I checked out during that time. The place itself is family oriented and loud because they are playing many different games and such in the TVs. They also have a sandbox for the kids. Even the menus were dirty and sticky. Just here because of the new appetizer boudin balls. Not quite what I expected but it does say cheesy. A little too mushy inside for me. Not a fan of the sauce but spicy doesn't always agree with me. You do get a nice amount but reminds me of stuffing balls. I probably wouldn't get it again but not a bad taste or value if you are not expecting a firmer inside or more boudin. Service was great as it has been lately and the rest of my meal, catfish was on point. Glad I tried it just not to my taste. But might be to yours. Wonderful experience tonight at Willie's. I had the Fried Gulf shrimp, a dozen very large butterflied shrimp fried to perfection. Hubby had the Blackened Redfish. We both had mixed vegetables. The vegetables were cooked perfectly, tender but not overcooked. Love Willie's on 151! This has been our go to spot since moving to San Antonio back in 2018. Then we moved away in 2022 and every time we come back to San Antonio this is our must stop restaurant because we like the great service, good food and great ambiance and atmosphere! The manager on duty took our ticket and told us our waitress would be by shortly, but no one ever came. Our food was eventually brought out, but we had no silverware, no napkins, and part of our order was missing. I spoke to the same manager again, and all he said was "sorry." After that, no one checked on us at all. As we were getting ready to leave, a waitress stopped by and said she wanted to check on us because she noticed no one had ever come to our table. Quite possibly the worst restaurant experience I've experienced in my 20s/30s. I'm 39. Waited 20 minutes in a line with multiple families just to get our order taken. Okay, fine. That's annoying but whatever. Except... that's not how this place works. You don't order and then sit and wait for food. Nope. You wait so they can print your order out and hand it to you. The lady at the register does not send it to the kitchen. She gives you a piece of paper like it's 1997 and tells you to take it to your table with a number on it. Then you sit there. Not waiting for food -- waiting for a waiter to come to you when he's good and ready. For us, and basically the entire restaurant, that was another 20 minutes. When the waiter finally shows up, he reads the same piece of paper you already gave the lady at the front, confirms what you said twice already, and then sends it electronically to the kitchen. So just to be clear: * You wait in line to tell someone what you want * You carry your own order to the table * You wait again for permission to have it sent to the kitchen * THEN you wait for food 30 minutes for chips and queso. Another 20 minutes for food that showed up cold. This place somehow managed to create the most inefficient system possible, combining the worst parts of counter service and table service into one absolute disaster. If I was on death row and this place was an option for my last meal, I'd say I'm good. This place does not deserve your money and I hope you don't give it to them. read more

Sorry for the terrible pictures, we sat outside on the patio seating because it was a beautiful evening with great weather. The restaurant offers a lot of seating indoor and out! You walk in and order at the counter but then the server will bring your food and be available if you want anything else. We definitely enjoyed the food, it was very good, no complaints. I stopped for lunch at Willie's. I sat at the bar and ordered a beer while I was looking at the menu. I took one sip of beer and noticed the glass was filthy. It took about 10 minutes for me to get someone's attention so that I could get a new glass. I ordered the fried shrimp which were awful. The shrimp were old and mushy. I should have told the server but she wasn't around. The whole experience was just bad. I usually enjoy this Willie's location but it will be a long while before I visit here again. Having TVs everywhere does help pass the time while you're being ignored by your server. read more

I ordered the chicken Willie with buffalo sauce which was perfection. We found a table after ordering where our server was super sweet! This place was so disappointing I ordered a cobb salad and my daughter ordered the ceasar salad. They brought out two ceasars salads but dressed mine with tomatoes and chicken like a cobb. But in the end of my experience I was called out for not paying apparently. He yelled outside in front of others that I didn't pay. That made it seem like I was stealing. This Willie's restaurant always exceeds my expectations. Whether dining in, picking up, or having it delivered, the food is always delicious and packaged so well. The service at this location is exceptional. Despite being very busy at times, they are very attentive to their tables. My family loves this restaurant. It is definitely a favorite among my kids. Going on 6 months i've decided i cannot give the place my service any longer, every time i come in to eat, the only person that greets me is the counter person, as i eat the manager walks past without any acknowledgment, specifically Diego will walk around the whole restaurant &' yell at his employees then comply with customers as if he wasn't just yelling. Jeremiah has been the only to correctly address his employees in front of service, the only one to acknowledge my presence along with everyone else's at that. i've seen the bussers get yelled at when society has common knowledge of there wages, you just don't treat human people in that way, i've finally had to tell my friends &' family that we cannot possibly keep going to this location we've though it's so close to where we live, we will have to travel further to eat at another location of Willies, i hope this wrecking issue gets resolved soon, being that i have been going to Willie's damn near my whole life it's such a disgrace to feel this way. read more

This has been the absolute worst experience I've had in this establishment and it will be my last. Mind you, I've been a patron of this place for years and it has continuously been a disappointment for the last couple of years. I even had their app. It started with questioning my 78 year old mother why she sat down at a table while your staff at the counter made people wait to order. Apparently, your waitstaff and kitchen were so far behind that they held off taking orders with ample table availability, but the paying customers have to suffer the consequences. After ordering, I sat down and my mother shared her experience. It was all downhill from there. So, it took a receipt to change the attitude of our server and she was nice afterwards. She even tried warning us that the kitchen was behind, but she failed to mention it was just our order. Meanwhile, all the other customers that followed us were being served. WE ARE A TABLE FOR TWO!!!! I ordered 20 wings, a side of fries and 2 beers. Finally I express myself to my server and she told us she advised the manager and lo and behold our mildly temperate food arrived and it was WRONG. Mind you I fast daily and should have eaten by 8 pm and my order arrived at 7:45 pm INCORRECTLY. I was upset and needed to express myself so I got up and asked for the manager. It doesn't get better. Brian Rose. . . . Let's start by saying, he didn't listen to a SINGLE word I said. After I vetted, he had the audacity to ask me "ok, what happened again?" He was informal, passive and uninterested. All he said was he was new and so was the GM and they are working to make the place better. This guy is not manager material. After all was said and done, he said "Thank you for letting us know." He shook my hand and went on with his night. This is the experience I paid for at a cost of $48.01($53.01 w/tip). With a struggling economy, eating out is a luxury and THIS was my experience. My exact words to the manager were, "I ordered food and you gave me what you wanted." WE truly are done with this place. My hope is that MANY people comment and view my post. I have to say this was the worse dining experience I have had in forever. I posted 2 photos of blacken red fish one of the photos which is obviously blacken and the other one not at all. Mind you this was 2 nights in a row of ordering the same thing. The first night the fish was blacken correctly and the second night it was done incorrectly. See below the incompetent things she said to me: - the cook is learner to cook - fish is hard to cook - told me the fish was blacken correctly only to start pointing out all the visible things she saw wrong with the food - asked me where I worked which I thought was weird and to be honest none of her business - told me she doesn't manage the cooks and fact he is not one of her favorites - she told me he has to learn meaning it's ok for the customer to suffer from a trying cook smh - ask her to take down my number and pass it alone to management she picked up a highlighter and wrote my number down in yellow highlight I have to say if this is the leadership of Willie's Grill and she is the face of the brand then she is misrepresenting the company and flat out embarrassing the core values of the company. I hope that someone reads this in higher levels with the company and realizes what you have in her as a manager. We ordered through Grubhub and I was disappointed with my meal. I got fried fish and shrimp which included coleslaw, I substituted street corn for fries. My daughter ordered wings and I got a side of fries for us. My daughter said she enjoyed her wings but everything on my plate was bland and disappointing.
