I came here on a weekend morning. There are about 25 places to sit inside and another dozen or so outside, which has nice. Everything for sale looked very pretty, but I was there for the butter vanilla soft serve. The worker at the cash register was so nice to the person ahead of me who had questions before ordering! I was in a bit of a food crawl this morning and forgot a water bottle, so the free water was very appreciated. It's an expense soft serve cone (about $11 with taxes) but it's a great size. Every ingredient seemed high quality, but my verdict is that butter and salt don't belong in vanilla soft serve. The butter was kind of just a chewy layer. I like how much scallion was in the blossom bun and it had a nice aroma from the pine nut pesto and toasted sesame but I thought it could have been seasoned more as it was a bit bland. Since I've been going to the SoHo Dominique Ansel for over a decade, I decided to try Papa d'Amour. No DKAs or Cronuts here. This place is geared more toward Asian bread culture. I wanted to pick up a few things, to start the weekend right. I also wanted a late lunch. I ordered the Five Spiced Pork Sando, with a fresh Cold Brew Coffee. Everything about the Sando was wonderful, except the Peanut Butter Sauce. It actually ruined it. I managed to remove some with a napkin, but it should be omitted; permanently. The Pretzel Salt Egg Tart was ok; incredibly salty. Taro & Mochi Laced Battered Donut was a bit odd. Once you get past the 4 different textures, upon your first bite, you start to realize how good it is. As a BONUS, they gave me a Butter Vanilla Soft Serve (Like what Stew Leonard's has). I did learn that DA was first with the creation. The butter coating is much better at Papa d'Amour. But the ice cream is better at Stew's. While my thoughts are my own, you should stop in and try this for yourself. I find it difficult to resonate with this flavor profile of his. We all love the cronut, which was stellar, but each of the selections I sampled was missing a few elements or needed further refinement. I find myself lost halfway through the experience. Nonetheless, it was a fun experience with the family. Scallions are known to hold moisture. Requires delicate balance to infuse them inside a warm roll. Kurobata Hot Dog was probably the best one out of the 5 we sampled. One of the best highlights of our visit was the staff exercising patience with our curiosity. I loved the pastries at Dominique Ansel's Soho bakery and was excited about his new bakery that incorporates Asian flavors with French pastry techniques. I got a scallion basil blossom. The employee warmed the pastry for me which helped bring out the flavor. I wish I had more positive things to say but I was a little underwhelmed by the pastry! The scallion and pesto flavors were strong, but the filling was a bit too wet and made the pastry soggy. I wish I could taste more bready flavor from the dough. And I wish I had tried it with the sweet corn soft serve instead of just vanilla. Was it good? Yes? Would I go out of my way for it? I heard Dominque Ansel had a new Taiwanese/French bakery so I had to check it out! They have creative pastries with a Taiwanese twist. It was fun to see familiar Asian flavors in a new baked good. I ordered the scallion basil blossom and the curry pan. They warm it up for you which makes the pastries so much better. The scallion basil blossom was flakey and filled with a delicious pesto. The butter ice cream soft serve sidewalk billboard sign especially caught my eye, so I decided to give it a try. The overall appearance of the cone looked fantastic. It was definitely beautifully handcrafted and looks really appealing. Unfortunately, the taste was average. The top of the cone was completely covered in a butter shell. It was slightly chewy, but was on the bland side. The organic soft serve ice cream does not taste as well as original soft serve. It lacked flavor and something was definitely missing. The bakers were on the right track by placing a "surprise" mochi gummy on the bottom of the cone, but it didn't fit with the dessert. A hard piece of chocolate or white chocolate would have been a much better alternative. I am confident this bakery has other dessert choices that are definitely on the money, which accounts for the large crowd. Came here on a Tuesday early evening. Very cute and brightly lit bakery with a modest amount of seating. It's not very large, and gets super crowded. I was super lucky that a family noticed me and as they were leaving, they referred me to the table they had been sitting at. Scallion basil blossom roll (warmed): crunchy and flaky with scallion and basil stuffing. I love scallion (I am Taiwanese after all), and this makes me think of Jian bing in croissant form. Curry pan (warmed): exterior is crispy and hot, I think topped with grains of rice crispy, and it's stuffed with chicken curry. Piping hot, but not to the point it burns my mouth, and slightly spicy. Amazing savory curry pan! Pretzel salt egg tart: very good. It's not flaky like the egg tarts I'm used to. The shell is more shortbread-esque. Gingerbread mochi toastie: didn't care for the chocolate-covered half (though it does look pretty with the gold leaf), especially since I could not taste the gingerbread nor mochi, the chocolate was overwhelming. I do love mochi and gingerbread though. It would have been better without any chocolate . Black sesame jam jar (SO HARD to choose between matcha and ube, everything sounded amazing. I decided to honor my traditional Taiwanese palate and go for the black sesame): Exterior tasted like marshmallow. Love exploring the bakery scene in NYC, and my friend and I just knew we had to come to Papa d'Amour! I'd actually discovered it watching an episode of Korean Englishmen on YouTube, so shoutout to them. When we got there, the workers were all very sweet and helpful, and luckily we found seating inside because they were very packed (typical for a Sunday morning, I assume) Spent a minute just admiring all the pastries on display - I just adore how their recipes marry the classic French pastries with East Asian flavors in such a creative and delectable way. Anyways, we tried a couple different pastries: Salt bread bagel with cheese spread (4/5): to say I love salt bread is lowkey an understatement, but regardless, this bagel was essentially just a very classic salt bread, very soft and like that of a cloud, airy and clean-tasting. Worked well with the cheese but it's just so good on its own as well. Apple, asian pear & red bean chausson (4.5/5): I was on a rollercoaster with this one. First off, the name instantly piqued my interest because the flavor profile seemed so versatile and harmonious, and then when I tried it, all three (apple, asian pear, red bean) were very much present but also with this almost Asian herbal aftertaste? But, it kinda grew on me and the apple/pear compote especially was just so addicting (I paired it with the cream cheese from the salt bread bagel, which actually worked so well together). This pastry very much gives a sense of autumn with its flavors, and omg the flakiness of the brioche was flawless. Most importantly, it was not TOO sweet, genuinely the perfect amount of sweet for me. Like, this is my new standard of sweetness for pastries. Banana bread malay cake (4.5/5): personally I found the banana to taste and feel more like a plantain, but the sponge was delightful, and I love all things banana bread, so you can't go wrong with this one. Was so excited for Papa D'amour to open as soon as I heard they were going to. As a fan of Dominique Ansel I was stoked to hear he's opening this place as an homage to his half Asian family, blending East/Southeast Asian flavors with French techniques to make something truly memorable. The #1 thing you MUST try is the taro mochi donut, which is sooo flaky and buttery, uniquely like the taro puffs at dim sum, filled with soft, gently chewy mochi and sweet strawberry jam - it's one of my favorite things I had all year. Kurobata sausage pastry was also excellent, and had a rich salty and savory flavor from the sausage and excellent lamination from the pastry as well. Toasted for warmth. The pretzel crust egg tart was interesting, and always love an egg tart but I gotta say the egg tart competition is stiff these days when considering places from Flushing and Chinatown. Also had the butter mochi which I enjoyed and are perfect for a small bite, but I preferred the original the most to really let that mochi flavor shine. I ordered the kurobuta hot dog spiral, taro and mochi lace batter donut, and the yakimochi hot chocolate. My favorite item was the donut. They had just made a new batch so it came out warm and crispy. I loved the flavor of the guava jam inside. Delicious!! This is a must get. The yakimochi hot chocolate was good, but I prefer richer/thicker hot chocolate so it wasn't my favorite. They heated up the hot dog spiral, which I appreciated. It was very unique and good, but I personally enjoyed the donut a lot more. There is some seating inside, but empty seats get taken up quickly. so depending on when you come, you may have to wait or just take your food to go. Staff is very very sweet and helpful. We came here for the ice cream after having Thai for dinner. It's been on my list for a while, cause I wanted to try the butter dipped ice cream. I had that while my date had the corn flavored one (which was the better of the two) I applaud their experimentation with different flavors and if I was to stop by again, I might try a pastry. This spot was recommended by a friend and it was definitely worth the try. We only got the desert items since we had just finished lunch. This place gets PACKED. So be prepared for a long line and no seating. There is seating outside, but on cold winter day, indoor seating is rarely available. Luckily, the line moves pretty fast. Our order came out within minutes of ordering. Be aware that some items come with plates and utensils so you wouldn't be able to leave to find seating elsewhere without bringing their plates and utensils back. What we ordered: Taro mochi lace batter donut - the exterior is a flaky crispy and so good. Doesn't feel heavily oily and fried at all. The interior taro mochi is soft, warm and lightly sweet. They used real taro, not the artificial flavoring. Mango coconut jam jar - unique jar with sweet mango coconut filling. You can eat the entire thing! The filling is light and fluffy while the exterior has a texture similar to chocolate, but don't think it is a chocolate because it isn't very sweet. It is also not a cookie. Hokkaido milk soft serve - this dessert is the sweetest of the 3. The soft serve is creamy and the sweetness pairs very well with the salted butter exterior. My boyfriend really loved this one but I felt it was a bit too weird eating the butter solidified on top the cold ice cream. The butter was also a taffy texture which was unexpected and unique. Papa de Amor in NYC is one of those places that quietly surprises you in the best way possible. I stopped by for a little treat run and ended up loving almost everything I tried. The Ube Cake Milk was the star for me as it's super creamy and smooth, with that earthy, real ube flavor instead of artificial sweetness. It's rich but not heavy, and the ube notes actually come through. If you love ube, this feels like dessert in a cup. The Yuzu Lemonade is a Light, refreshing, and perfectly citrusy. The yuzu gives it a floral brightness that hits different from regular lemonade with balanced acidity, not too sweet. It's the kind of drink that feels like a reset button. The Kurobuta Croissant is a Warm, flaky, and buttery with a savory edge from the kurobuta filling. Super unique and interesting bakery! I love the taiwanese-french pastries they offer here! There was no line when we got here and after we ordered, they gave us our pastry on a plate and we sat down at a table inside. I like savory pastries so the kurobuta hot dog spiral was the perfect choice. It's a pastry with shallot oil-sauteed sticky rice filling, topped with soy-glazed kurobuta pork hot dogs and sesame furikake. Make sure to get it warmed up! Pork hot dog buns are a staple in taiwanese bakeries and I liked how creative it was to combine it with sticky rice and make it into a pastry! The other item we got was the taro mochi lace batter donut with taro, guava strawberry jam, vanilla mochi, crispy lace batter.
