I went to another well-known mechanic shop in downtown San Jose. I took my 2006 BMW 330i I spent $1700 for it to absolutely continue to have the same issue after they told me every repair they did was going to fix it. Unfortunately they also caused a leak which I had to pay for. I told a friend of mine and he recommended this place since he had an incredible experience. I had offered to pick up the car on Saturday but they were closed. So, on Monday he texted me that he would charge me $75 dollars if I did NOT pick up the car. Had a bad situation with my Dads 47 Cadillac. Lost a drive axle in the rear end. Just finding someone who will work on a 1947 vehicle is a chore in itself. They found the issue and were patient in giving me time to find the parts. Can't go to Auto Zone looking for parts a 1947 vehicle . Luckily I found someone through my Dad's Cadillac Club that had the parts from a different 47 Caddie. Once they received the parts the Caddy was fixed and rolling in 2 days. I came in as a woman to this shop worried because every shop has tried to take advantage of me! My 2012 Nissan Sentra has a CVT transmission and it has started to show early signs of it failing. Mike the owner who had helped me was very honest and straight forward with what was going wrong and even broke it all down for me. He tried doing a few things that postponed the issue because I was adamant on not fixing it right away because I wasn't able to financially put that much on my car, so he decided to take care of me and just gave me proper explanations of what to expect. I even shopped around for getting a replacement CVT transmission quote from everyone in the Bay Area and including Sacramento and this shop was the best! SAVE YOUR MONEY AND FIND A GOOD SHOP, I DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU TAKE ANY VEHICLE TO WINCHESTER TRANSMISSION. I do not usually write reviews but felt maybe I can save another from having the same experience I did. I have had several experiences at this shop and they do not know what they are doing at all. Last November I brought my 1993 Dodge Stealth in for a rebuilt of our automatic transmission for the cost of $3800.00. Supposedly gave me a cash discount, the shop that is going to really rebuild my transmission is only charging $2600.00 (so no cash discount was ever given). April after driving the car approx 3000 miles the transmission failed. We towed it to Winchester Transmission, they said they would fix it but, they believed the car was driven hard. I assured them that was not the case. When the car was picked up every time you put it in reverse the car would die. The head mechanic/front guy Christian told us it was the engine not the transmission. We explained that we were not having that issue before you worked on the transmission. Anyway we were told we needed to have the car checked at 500 miles for the warranty to be good. My nephew and I brought the car in to be checked at 425 miles. Juan the transmission guy said it was good, not sure how he drove my car as he sped out of the lot. Juan returned a few minutes later and said the transmission is good. My nephew again asked about the reverse issue and again was told that it was not the transmission. Well a few hundred miles later the transmission goes out again. We towed the car back to the shop as it was supposed to be under warranty. Well after several calls to check the status and a little over a week Christian told us that we need to talk to the owner Mike, they are not honoring the warranty because they said the car was driven too hard. I said that is not the case at all. I asked if they even looked at it and was told they did not need to. I said how do you know what is wrong if you have not looked at it? Christian then said they were not covering it and if you want we can take it apart and then have you pick up the parts when we deny you. I was so mad, I asked for the owner to call me ASAP. Talking to Christian is like talking to a wall, turns out he does not know transmissions and has never worked on one. I asked then why are you talking to me about the transmission? He said he could read notes although he talks like he knows what he is talking about (he does not). Mike the owner called me and said the transmission overheated and that is what is wrong. I asked again so you put it on the rack and checked it? He said I don't have to I know. I asked so you are just burning me then? I was so mad I pretty much hung up on him. Mike called me again and said My son said he drove the car hard. I said that is bullshit I heard you forced him to sign a paper stating the warranty is voided do to abuse to get the key from these jerks, so we could move the car. Miked the owner called me again this time to offer that they will fix the transmission for 50% of the cost so about another $2000.00, I laughed and told him he can kiss my ass I would not give him another dime. We had the car towed and realized they stole all the paperwork on the transmission out of the glove box of car (people on the up and up do not do that). Before I knew how bad this shop was: On another occasion I took my Hyundai to them to fix a headlight, I told Christian 3 times that it needed to be rewired. He told me I did not know what I was talking about. I picked up my car and they showed me the headlight worked. That night when I got in my car the headlight did not work. I brought it back as I paid a lot to have them fix it. I told Mike and he told Christian to get it fixed. Christian after bitching fixed it. Another time I brought my Hyundai and told them it was shaking and jumping when I break, I explained that rotors and brakes were recently done. Mike said he knew it was, it was the front axles. I believed him and paid cash again for them to fix it. It did not fix the problem. I had another mechanic look at it and found it was broken motor mounts causing the problem. He replaced the motor mounts and it fixed the problem. My nephew brought his BMW to see if they could fix why it was not starting. Christian the head mechanic told my nephew that he needed a new engine that could cost between $13,000.00 - 15,000.00. My nephew said No I don't , did you even look at it? Christian talked to my nephew like he did not know what he was talking about. My nephew towed his car to a BMW shop who confirmed my nephew absolutely did not need a new engine just a new solenoid and the spark plugs that Winchester Transmission put in, needed to be replaced. Short version: $200 to tell me that I was a dumb-ass; flush my differential, NOT fix the leak I specifically pointed at when I brought it in, and then leave my car unlocked in the public parking lot with all the windows rolled down. They just don't seem to have their act together and nearly impossible to understand on the phone (if they feel like calling you). The Story: So, my fiance noticed that it smelled as though the Subaru was burning some ATF fluid, and wanted it fixed before she needed to shuttle around clients to/from San Fran and San Jose for a week. We'd noticed that it had been leaking something around one of the drive-lines to the front wheel, but had been merrily adding ATF fluid whenever the car seemed to lose some, or be hesitating (and that was helping). Dropping your car off to get worked on is always a pain in the ass, isn't it? So I find some place near where I work and drop it off in the morning, about 9am. I am hoping that they can take a look at where I point out it's leaking, fix the leak with a seal, and have it back to me that afternoon. To make a long story short, I'd been mistakenly filling up the front differential of my car with ATF fluid (should be gear oil), because who's ever heard of a differential oil dipstick? And it seemed to make it better when I did. (In the Subaru manual, the section for checking/filling your MANUAL transmission give descriptions that lead exactly to where this little differential dipstick is, while the ATF fluid is very buried). The guys at the shop, cleaned up the gunk off the engine and then later told me what they'd found w/ the differential. They weren't sure what they were going to do about it, but they said the "leak" was actually me overfilling this and it all coming out the breather hose. This was about lunchtime of the first day. The evening of the first day, I had to call them and ask for a status update, and they said that they cleaned up the engine and coated it with leak-detecting powder (baby powder??), now they had to drive it, and see if it leaked any more. Oh, and the owner of the shop wanted to personally look in at this differential issue, but he wouldn't be in until the next morning. Fine, sure. The next morning, I get a call from them. They ask me, "where had I been putting this ATF fluid?" I reply that I'd been putting it in the filler hose, on the passenger's side, and they tell me that the filler is on the driver's side and I've been doing it all wrong. But no big deal, they'll just flush it, and replace the oil. By lunchtime, I haven't heard anything, so I catch a ride with a friend over there, to see what's really going on. They show me how they've cleaned it, and are looking for leaks, and exactly how I was accidentally over-filling the differential with the wrong fluid. (Hey, it could happen to anybody.) They say, "should be done by tonight, it's looking like $175." Ok, sure, no problem. It's 5:15, and I haven't heard from them, so I give them a call. Two calls actually, and both times, nobody answers. "The Sprint voice mail customer ' ' (yes, that's dead silence you hear), is not available, please leave a message." I goad my buddy in giving me a ride over there, and he obliges. On the way, they call me, tell me my car is done, but they want to keep it overnight for "observation", to see if it leaks anymore. I can pick it up anytime after 8am the next morning. I suppose. The next morning, I take the train out to their shop, showing up at about 8:45 to find my car in their shared parking lot, both front windows rolled completely down, and entirely unlocked. I finally find the guy to talk to, and my bill hasn't been written up yet; he scribbles down an extra $19.95 for synthetic gear oil, adds on $175 for their trouble, and simply writes down, "diagnosis and differential flush" as the work done, not spectacularly helpful. I pull out the Visa, sign my name, and high-tail it out of there. I'm sorry Winchester Transmissions & Service, but I just can't take it anymore. Oh, and the place where I thought the leak was coming from when I brought it in.... it's still leaking, $200 later. (but at least it doesn't smell) read more

The employee could not shift it into reverse so he drives the car straight into a curb, all while I'm sitting 5ft away in our other car with our daughter sleeping in the back seat. They tell you it's "free" to inspect the car for problems, however, they throw this internal/external crap and sooner or later your in $390 (just to look at your car). So they say, if you get all the necessary work done, that $390 is forgotten. read more

After some major issues with the dealership where I normally take my car, my check engine light came on and I needed service fast. I saw that Winchester Transmission did free diagnostics, so I called them and made an appointment, and also scheduled an oil change.  Mike, the owner, answered the phone, and he was super friendly and helpful from the start.  They ran a complete diagnostic on my engine, which ended up coming back with all sorts of issues, and Mike investigated each one thoroughly. He showed me what each code meant and what he was doing every step of the way.  He walked me through each repair decision, and explained what my car needed and why. He let me use his office to do work on my laptop while everything got sorted out, and even was kind enough to order me lunch (on the house) when getting some for himself. After the final diagnosis came in, he gave me all the parts at a great price, and even negotiated with a vendor to get a better deal for me.  He charged me the least amount of time for labor, and there were no extra charges or fees when I picked up my car.  PLUS my car is now running better than it has been in months.  The best part is, I found a super cool, kind and honest mechanic who treats his customers like family.  I am thrilled to have met Mike and to have discovered Winchester Transmission.  Thank you for taking such good care of me and my car, Mike!! read more

Steer clear from this place. In laws took their 2004 CTS in for a transmission rebuild cost them $3600 and six months later we have it and there are still problems. Took it in for a diagnostic test and turns out the transmission needs to be replaced. So these guys did NOTHING but piss around under the guise of rebuilding the transmission. Fortunately we did not pay to rebuild the transmission but now we are stuck with a faulty car. Stay away from this place. read more
