Cute produce market right on San Ramon Valley Blvd across from In-n-Out. They have a wide selection of local produce and grocery items and the pricing isn't too bad either. I was surprised they had frozen fruit pies and already baked fruit pies in their refrigerated section. I caved in and bought the freshly baked fruit pie, brought it home and put it in the oven to warm it up. The crust was flaky and buttery and the filling wasn't overly sweet! The only complaint about this place is parking. There's street parking right in front of the market, but because it's on such a busy street, it can be dangerous getting out. read more

Fantastic farm stand type place with tons and tons of variety. I Love going to these type of places. But I have to say a lot of their produce was ripe or over-ripe. I was SOOOOOO happy when I found this place! While Safeway is charging @#$% $1.00 per lemon, Windmill Farms charges $1.00 for FOUR! Everything is far, far less than a grocery store - and better. But the real reason I adore this place is the heirloom tomatoes. I crave heirloom tomatoes. I love heirloom tomatoes. I need heirloom tomatoes. Fortunately, Windmill farms has heirloom tomatoes. They charge significantly less than grocery stores that have them, and they are far better quality. The only way you can get better ones is by driving out to Brentwood - but that's only after July. Windmill Farms gets them in early June; huge, gorgeous and ripe. They have just about everything else you could want, including non-produce items. Now I am having second thoughts about posting this because I'm afraid they'll sell out, so forget everything I wrote! Don't go here! read more

Since I work nearby I often swing through here on the way home. The selection of produce is huge and fresh. Almost everything is bargain priced so you're doing your wallet a favor while giving your taste buds a treat. It's a bit understaffed from a checkout perspective so if you get someone in front of you that wants to pay in coins you'll have to wait a while, but that's the only reason I don't give it 5 stars. They won a 'Best Small Business' award and it's well deserved. read more

Found Windmill Farms just driving by a few months ago. Nice to see produce stands closer to home. They carry a vast array of veggies and fruit along with some grocery items (salad dressing, nuts etc). I wish they carried more organic veggies though. read more

Disappointing I had high hopes for my first visit based on the great reviews, but.... 2 out of 2 pineapples and 2 out of 3 apples were spoiled. The mango and the Portuguese bread were excellent, but I still don't want to risk going back and getting bad produce :-( read more

This place used to be really good when it came to service and product. However, about a month ago, the quality of the produce has fallen significantly. In addition to that, the service from the staff and the hours of operation have become very erratic. I used to get my produce there twice a week every week for the past year. Unfortunately, I don't feel like their product will improve and their unreliability (closing early, unfriendly staff) of service has caused me to go elsewhere for my produce. read more

I think every town should have a Windmill Farms. I recently read that most towns don't grow enough produce to feed their elementary school. WHAT? Fortunately for us, we have Windmill Farms. It's got just about everything you need, and offers local organic and conventionally grown foods. More people should shop here. I know it's so convenient to get it all at Safeway, but really - it's a hop, skip and a jump from ALL of he he grocery stores in San Ramon. Just go here first, grab your produce and other things they sell, and finish up at your grocery store of choice. If I could offer ONE suggestion - maybe to charm factor could be upped a little. Not just the way it looks, but the way the staff interacts as well. I know it's an added cost for the business, but I think it would add to the appeal. Oh, and try the locally grown honey! We moved from Mountain View, which has one of the best farmer's markets in the bay area so our standards are quite high but we decided to give Windmill Farms a shot. It's a fairly unassuming place next to a pub and it looks like a small roadside fruit stand but in fact it's quite large. This allows for an incredible selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with some local tomato sauces, nuts, sauces, snacks, and so on. We got some pre-bagged cherries, a few oranges, and some strawberries. This place does not allow you to sample anything, which makes every purchase a gamble and you have no way to tell what's good so we went for fruits that were in season. The prices on the rest of the fruit and produce simply wasn't good enough to make the gamble appealing. The place has a bunch of San Ramon high schoolers working there and quite frankly, they don't particularly care much for customer service. I was second in line forever while we waited for him to count out change and then weighed a customer's watermelon with his hand on it, making for a hefty $13 watermelon. Genius. When we got home to try the fruit, it was absolutely terrible. There were perhaps 2 or 3 cherries that were actually edible and I ended up trashing the entire lot. A few of the middle cherries had gotten crushed when they bagged them and ended up rotting and getting the goo all over everything else, causing everything else to rot as well. Serves me right I suppose for getting a pre-packed bag instead of picking out my own cherries. The oranges were hard and dry and the strawberries were unremarkable. We've gone back once or twice to give it another shot, and had very similar experiences. I really don't understand the great reviews for this place. This place does have fresh fruit and vegetables and the selection is pretty strong, but when it comes to actually good, quality produce, I think that San Ramonians simply don't know any better. I think even Safeway has better stuff, which is pretty harsh. If you want better tasting stuff at an amazing price, take a weekend trip to Brentwood. Or if you don't mind paying a bit, go to Lunardis or Whole Foods. Skip Windmill Farms. We're not going back. read more

This is the best place to shop for produce. Everything is ALWAYS fresh and it actually has a fruit and vegetable smells as it should to the product, nothing like you can find at any other store. Prices are fantastic, quality is grate and I definitely miss this place when they close it for couple month in a winter time. I actually like it that it is outside and is not in a setting for a big store but rather a small market. I have been coming to this place for the past 15 years and it's my favorite place to shop in San Ramon. read more

I always bring my family here because of how awesome it is. I love to support small businesses as I grew up the daughter of a small business owner. It's off to the side of the road and always has a large selection. The food is genuine and imperfect looking, because it hasn't been altered. I love just walking around and picking up all of the fresh products. There is an inside sections with some great products also. There's such a wide variety of choices and there's even an aisle with drinks like Starbucks drinks. I always make sure to recommend this place to friends and take my extended family when they visit. read more

This is my farmers market. Everything is cheap per pound and there's so much selection.

The original owner has retired and has sold the business to someone else. There have been no significant changes, and I even recognize a couple of the same clerks. And the best part of it is that they did not close for six weeks beginning on Christmas Eve this last year, so you can still shop here in January. I continue to love this place. read more

This review is only for the fresh apple pie, which we ended up calling 'applesauce pie'. The crust was fine, but the filling was runny with the consistency of applesauce, hardly any chunks of apple to be found. It ended up in the garbage. Apparently the cherry is better, but I would not buy another pie here based on my experience with the apple. read more

It wasn't just a fruit stand, I was surprised to find out that they have a "convenience" store inside too. You can buy milk, bread (or beer) here too. The Milk price wasn't a steal, but it wasn't absurd either. It has been convenient to be able to quickly pick up a few extra items when we pick up our fruit and veggies. Good prices, good fruit. I like the to be able to buy organic and locally grown fruits and veggies. read more

I had to update my review. I just bought a LOT of veggies here. My basket was full and arm was achy by the time I was done, so the whole time I'm thinking to myself, that this would be like a $15 shopping trip... it was only $8! I bought green onions, cilantro, celery, red leaf lettuce, spinach, onions, bell peppers, etc. Anyhow, it definitely would have been much pricier at Safeway (especially since I got some organic items). I love this store! It becomes my regular market to get fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruits. The price is reasonable, some are cheaper than other stores, some aren't. They have lots of organic items in good price. I am absolutely happy with this store. But if they accept credit cards too, that will even better! read more

I wish every town had a Windmill Farms! I live in Pleasanton, but once a week go up to San Ramon just for this stop to stock up. You cannot beat these prices, and c'mon, everyone should be supporting the little guys! For all those haters who are complaining of their lack of variety...where do you expect them to put everything???? The whole place is definitely bigger than all of Safeway's produce section, with easily twice as much variety! It's non-realistic to expect a local place like this to carry every single farm grown/raised product you can think of....but I think they come pretty darn close! Prices are hands down the best you will find around town. And I happen to LOVE driving by when they have the pumpkin patch, the petting zoo and xmas trees. As an advocate for organically and locally grown foods, I love Windmill Farms. Wonderful place for fresh, quality produce at excellent prices. I love the fruits and vegetables here. Lots of variety, seasonal and some exotic fruits I can't find in big-box supermarkets. Competitive prices. I love that my money is also helping out local farmers in my community (which is what I grew up doing in Chico, CA). I'm a bit sad that I haven't shopped here sooner since it is right off the highway, and on the way home to my house. I like its open-air area and it refrigerated areas. A bit small, but again, I want to buy more local. read more

I began shopping here a few months ago with my daughter and have never been impressed by the service but yesterday was a new low. My daughter wanted an apple so we purchased one along with some water to wash it off more thoroughly after my daughter dropped it. After being hassled by a woman for sorting through the apricots, I was told by an employee at the register to wash my produce in the back of their facility because the water I put on the floor could make someone slip. His accent was thick and his English was not very good so I can't be sure is he was telling me to go to the back or that they would wash it for me. I had washed my daughters apple directly next to the cart/onion stand and used maybe and 1/8 of a 20 oz bottle of Aquafina. I pointed out to him that their facilities floors are COVERED in water. Puddles! Seriously, go here and there is always water all over the ground in walkways! He just kept repeating that customers would slip, I don't think he realized how redundant his request was. As we walked out I checked the spot where I had washed her apple: No puddle, the ground wasn't slippery, and the wet spot was about the size out my hand with my fingers spread out. It's an outdoor market with water everywhere and you want to get on me for a smudge? After all the other times I have come and received snotty service this was the final straw. Whole Foods and Safeway are thanking you right now for the $200+ a month they now pocket because I will NOT be returning here again. read more

I can't believe I didn't know about this place before a few months ago, what a great find! My first visit I bought a mango, corn, baby bok choy, lemon, seedless cucumber, a butternut squash and a red onion and spent only $6.84! I spent that much a week before at the supermarket on just a butternut squash. This has become my favorite place to buy baby bok choy, okra, and chinese eggplant since these never look that great at the supermarket and are way expensive. Last week I bought 6 bunches of bok choy and 2 oranges and spent $1.03! I only had a $20, and the cashier was nice enough to take the 3 cents from the "give a penny, take a penny" jar, which I appreciated. read more

This is a great place to get fruits from during the summer when the fruits are in season. It's a bit more pricey than going to a Farmer's Market, but the produce is the same as you would get at one of those, so if you want seriously fresh fruits and vegetables in a bind this is the place to go. read more

My best friend has been telling me for the last few months to check out Windmill Farms. I've been recently disappointed by the fruit selection at the grocery chains and decided today to take a drive over to SR. The fruit selection is amazing and so delicious - I picked up some peaches, strawberries, honeydew as well as some spinach and cilantro. The price is amazing here too!
