Ain't nothing like a chicken wing~ Well, at least that's what I'd like to say. I love me a good chicken wing joint so it somewhat pains me to say that Wings Empire was a bit of a letdown after being hyped by my friends about it. Before we even got the food, we had to wait about 45 minutes before our food was ready which was a tad on the longer side of things. I'm usually not bothered by the wait but what irked me was that because I was waiting for as long as I did, I got to observe the food handling habits of the staff. Or if I want to be more specific, the lack thereof. There was a lot of touching food without gloves as well as switching back and forth between handling money and then handling food. Standing by the right hand side of the restaurant, I could see into their kitchen and just felt unsettled with the way things were getting done back there. I get that when small establishments are understaffed that workers have to wear multiple hats but it doesn't excuse poor food handling conduct. All together, we ordered two large chicken fries (one buffalo and one mango habanero) as well as an order of pulled pork fries to share amongst ten friends. The quantity is there, let's get that out there. You get a heaping amount of fries per order and the meat is stacked significantly high up. However, for a chicken joint, the best thing we had was the pulled pork and that's a stretch seeing as how the bbq sauce it was coated in was just a bit too sickeningly sweet. The mango habanero sauce was both spicy with a subtle sweetness and the buffalo sauce had that signature tang that was nice on the taste buds. It was just a shame though because the main vessel of the dish that was the chicken was rather dry and tasted as if it was either cooked too long in the fried or it was just a microwaveable chicken nugget you can get from the freezer aisle. La la love this place!!! I come here at least twice a month if not more, wings are amazing! Not only are they cheaper than competitors (coughcoughbdubsandwingstopcoughcough) but they're also tastier and if some of the wings are slightly smaller than usual they throw in some extra ones without even mentioning it and BAM your 10 wings turns into a 12 wings. Service is super polite and nice. If I had to critique something about this place, and I'm just nitpicking, it would be that I would recommend the owner purchase better take out containers because I don't know if i might be just carrying the bag wrong, but I always spill wing sauce all over the bag. anyways definitely worth your buck! After doing research for 20 min on wing spots in OC, wings empire seemed pretty good. I was a little hesitant about placing an order due to the mixed reviews. I placed a to-go order on the phone and noticed a few red flags right away. 1) I immediately got put on hold (reality: I wasn't put on hold where the line was silent, instead the phone was placed somewhere on the counter where I heard literally everything going on in the place) for five minutes. *I ordered the buffalo chicken fries, 3 breadsticks, 5 bone-in lemon pepper wings & a drink.* 2) The young man who took my order was very impatient and rude. I couldn't finish my sentences or my questions before he was already moving on to the next question. Since he was in such a hurry he didn't place my order right. I decided to call again because I knew that there was a potential my order wouldn't be right. So I decided to make a second call & I spoke to the same guy as previously. I told him I wanted to add more food to my previous order & while he recited my first order, I noticed he didn't mention the breadsticks but just the order of BCF, I told him I wanted the breadsticks & he claimed he wasn't aware that's what I wanted (listening is key) I ended up ordering lemon pepper wings & a drink to complete my full order. The ETA for both orders was 15-25 min. I don't live too far away, about a 30 minute drive. Once I arrived I assumed my food would be ready. 3) While waiting in line, it was extremely disorganized. The same guy who took my order was the same guy who ended up checking me out. Before getting to the register, I was next up after a family of three & he looked over to another customer calling them next. I stood and waited in line for about 5 minutes. As an employee in the service industry are you so oblivious to your surroundings that you aren't able to dictate who got there before who? Once I got to the register, he was again in a hurry and very eager to finish my ticket. 4) I waited for my food that was supposed to be ready, for another 10 min and wasn't surprised when the order was wrong. I got everything I ordered, but another order of large buffalo fries was added in the same bag with the lemon pepper wings & breadsticks. I always check my orders before leaving a spot. I checked the bag with my order of BCF & the other bag had the wings I checked & the breadsticks. The guy on the phone said the wings come with a side of regular fries so I was assuming the large box underneath my wings & bread was the side of fries. I get home & realize it's another order of the LARGE BCF!!! I mean, at least I got my original order but it proved that the service was extremely subpar & as far as the employees carefully listening to customers, that's out the window. 5) MOST IMPORTANT: out of all of this, what does the food taste like? The breadsticks were the best part of the meal & that's not saying a lot (wow) 1) pictures are deceiving. the breadsticks look nothing like how they're advertised. They were halfway burnt. 2) the lemon pepper wings: the skin of the chicken was okay, it's mostly drenched in oil but then the meat is extremely dry. The wings are really just over cooked. 3) the buffalo chicken fries: the hype is real.... the fries were just a no for me... the chopped chicken was pretty dry. For a place that specializes in chicken, I expected a higher level of quality in the cooking of the chicken. Chicken is supposed to be moist & tender, not dry & tasteless. It took 40 minutes for our order and now I'm wondering if they made it right, forgot about it, and microwaved it so it would be hot. The chicken tenders were so dry and tasteless, not how you would expect fried chicken straight out of the grease to taste. Fries were warm, but also tasted exactly like when you warm up leftover fries. Crazy expensive as well. Definitely not worth the money. I recommend calling ahead EVERYTIME since most likely theres always a wait. Even by phone you have to call multiple times since its usually busy. Came here earlier today and honestly can say this is my new favorite wing spot! Felt a little overwhelmed at first by how busy it was but my cashier (young Hispanic girl with glasses) was so helpful and such a sweetheart on helping me I felt more at ease. My party and I did wait 20-45 minutes for our food and it was REALLY worth the wait. Wings were made out of high quality chicken and were super juicy I never drooled so hard in my life. I enjoyed that the prices were reasonable especially on how much food each person gets. Manager or owner was there and was really sweet. My total came out to $14.55 for 10 wings that come with a small bag of veggies. The wings are decent, but not worth $14. They also charge 55 cents as a processing fee for cards, so bring cash.
