This is a standard subpar neighborhood Chinese joint - 2 stars. I've driven by this place literally hundreds of times and I finally tried them out tonight. Unfortunately, it was as bad as I feared. It's just another substandard Chinese place that seems to proliferate in every neighborhood and every community in Minnesota. It's almost like they all follow the same formula...a bad formula. Wong's "Gourmet" is strictly pickup and delivery. They have their own delivery staff. There are a few chairs for waiting but no dining area. You can see this used to be a sit-down joint but the dining room on the right side is now a dark storage area. Kinda tacky. A room divider or a curtain might makes things look a little more professional. And the big light-up menu behind the counter is a vintage leftover from a previous life with fading lights, no prices, and old menu items. Again, tacky. The menu is just a thing glued to the wall by the register. If you're smart, this is the time you might want to run away. Just as I predicted, this place dishes out lots of overcooked food with low grade ingredients. Everything is overcooked to death. All the nice bright greens, reds, yellows, whites you normally see in fresh veggies are l-o-n-g gone. The greens are all faded green, soft, and overcooked. My beef was really chewy and rubbery, obviously low grade meat. I always like to check-out the beef dishes. I love good beef but it's also a good indicator of what's going on with the recipes, the food quality, and the cooking skills...or lack thereof. My Hot Sour Soup was lame and disappointing. My traditional style Egg Rolls were okay, I guess. They're about 1/3 smaller than normal egg rolls. (But then again, they give you 3 of them.) And finally, my Hot Spicy Beef was also disappointing. It was overcooked with rubbery beef cuts. It wasn't hot or spicy either. I detected some red hot pepper specks here & there but I definitely couldn't taste any of them. If I see the red hot pepper warning symbol on the menu, I definitely want some real actual heat & flavor, please! Come on, what's the problem? The best I can say about Wong's Gormet is the food is cheap, it's made quickly, and it comes out piping hot. It might be a nice change for a family on a budget that's tired of fast food burgers and pizza. But personally, I'd rather go for a Big Mac or a Domino's Pizza instead of this stuff. Technically, it might not be as healthy but it definitely tastes better. BTW, if you want some good Asian food nearby, there are several EXCELLENT options within a 5 or 10 minute drive on Central Avenue and University Avenue. There are also a couple of decent buffets. Checkout Yelp and sort for "Highest Rated" - the Yelp reviewers won't let you down. I won't be visiting this one again. Next... -Maxx

It helps too to have a well maintained, attractive place to eat. Shuang Cheng has ticked those boxes for three and half plus decades. Let's start with one of the most basic items: Wonton Soup. Boring, I hear you say! Well, consider this: broth that has a deep, deep flavor and wasn't something that was an afterthought. Generous slices of roasted pork, tender wonton wrappers stuffed with a great-tasting filling. Boring? Hardly. It's literally the best wonton soup I've ever had. OK, what about something like lobster with black bean sauce. Nailed it. Sweet, generous portion of lobster in a sauce so good, you can use it as a dip for your lobster and it's fantastic over the rice. EMPEROR'S CHICKEN (15.85) - My wife varied from her usual Sesame Chicken (which she thinks is better than any other Chinese restaurant) and is a lightly breaded and deep fried chicken fillet slices of ham over a bed of bok choy and mushrooms. Perfect she said. The service is always good, the restaurant was remodeled a few years ago and if you can overcome the parking challenge in Dinkytown, this traditional Cantonese restaurant deserves a permanent place on your regular restaurant rotation. Enough said.

It was nice visiting and enjoying some of our previously go-to dishes. The soft shell crab made with golden garlic style was as delicious as I remembered, although at a much higher price now ($44+) for the dish. The seafood soup was a nice start to our meal, would have been even better if they had red vinegar. The mapo tofu and eggplant dishes that we ordered ended up being very similar in taste/sauce/seasoning but still pretty good. The service was pretty fast and the staff was friendly.

In true family-style fashion we got plenty of dishes to share: some appetizers and some "main dishes" as well. The Xiao long bao and beef burrito are great starters. Both great portion sizes for main dishes with plenty to take home if needed. The restaurant is large and spacious nestled in a strip mall, and the service was fantastic. The scallion pancakes were super crispy, the Szechuan dumplings had a LOT of garlic + chili oil (in the best way), and the Shanghai pork buns were juicy and full of flavor. From the outside appearance and lack of upkeep to the service and, most importantly, the food, the entire experience was disappointing. The service was odd, the staff didn't seem very familiar with the menu, and there were several misses that made the experience even less enjoyable. The food itself was mediocre at best--and honestly, some of it was just bad. Then came the bill: over $75 plus tip for three people, with two lunch specials and three drinks. For what we received, the price was absolutely ridiculous. For me, this was a hard pass. The food wasn't worth the money, the service wasn't impressive, and the overall experience left a lot to be desired. Don't waste your time, and especially don't waste your money.

The beef was plentiful and extra tender and the pork belly was perfectly melt-in-your-mouth, so good that I felt like I had to ration it throughout the next few meals. I do wish it came with more rice. I ordered three sides and only got one box of rice. I was hoping to have at least two so I can eat it for several days. However, to end on a positive note, when I walked in to pick up my order, the woman (owner possibly) was incredibly friendly and spoke Mandarin to me. My mouth explodes with flavor. Every time. Hot pot, hot pot. In my gastronomical journey through life, Chinese hot pot is possibly my greatest encounter. And locally, it's Le Pot. Best broth bases - mala spicy, pork bone, and Tom yum are endorsed by me and my girlfriend Great foodstuffs - qual egg, udon noodles, good fatty beef, crab sticks, good old cabbage, tofu, bean curd, enoki mushroom etc - Lamb and pork are alright at this location, could be better Great sauce bar, as I can assemble my staples - Sauce 1: black vinegar, chili oil with flake, garlic oil with garlic, sesame oil, scallions, cilantro (about equal parts and adjust); season with sugar, salt and soy sauce if desired - Sauce 2: lots of sesame paste, and leave as is or maybe add scallions, chili oil, sesame seed **I do wish they had chive paste** - Sauce 3: Oyster sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, cilantro, green onion, black vinegar Value - it's like 30-35 dollars a person here. - I often leave more satisfied here than I do after a "fancy" night on the north loop What's missing - ambiance is okay - I do like a huge communal pot - Chive flower paste - Pork and lamb could be better - Broths are good, but I like the Chicago restaurants best Local hot pot honorable mentions - the place at Asia Mall with the electric rack innovation - Legendary Spice - you are free to grab a tray and raid their fridges/freezers for whatever meat, vegetable, etc you want. But the borth wasn't as good. Overall, it's rather expensive but quality is in some ways lower than Le Pot. - J Pot - Korean bbq and hot pot.
