Wongs usually has really good food; I love their egg rolls but on a recent trip to pick up some lo mien? Not impressed. I ordered the vegetable lo mien with chicken. Overall, the dish was bland tasting, and for the cost you pay, it could have used a lot more chicken and vegetables. I was nervous with the reviews and what the quality of food would be like, but was pleasantly surprised by the quality and flavor of food. Food ordered: Pork fried rice- delicious. Nice chunks of pork and onion and not greasy. Moo sho pork- some of the most delicious flavor ever. Recommend. Pork Pad Thai- was told it was delicious. This is a standard subpar neighborhood Chinese joint - 2 stars. I've driven by this place literally hundreds of times and I finally tried them out tonight. Unfortunately, it was as bad as I feared. It's just another substandard Chinese place that seems to proliferate in every neighborhood and every community in Minnesota. It's almost like they all follow the same formula...a bad formula. Wong's "Gourmet" is strictly pickup and delivery. They have their own delivery staff. There are a few chairs for waiting but no dining area. You can see this used to be a sit-down joint but the dining room on the right side is now a dark storage area. Kinda tacky. A room divider or a curtain might makes things look a little more professional. And the big light-up menu behind the counter is a vintage leftover from a previous life with fading lights, no prices, and old menu items. Again, tacky. The menu is just a thing glued to the wall by the register. If you're smart, this is the time you might want to run away. Just as I predicted, this place dishes out lots of overcooked food with low grade ingredients. Everything is overcooked to death. All the nice bright greens, reds, yellows, whites you normally see in fresh veggies are l-o-n-g gone. The greens are all faded green, soft, and overcooked. My beef was really chewy and rubbery, obviously low grade meat. I always like to check-out the beef dishes. I love good beef but it's also a good indicator of what's going on with the recipes, the food quality, and the cooking skills...or lack thereof. My Hot Sour Soup was lame and disappointing. My traditional style Egg Rolls were okay, I guess. They're about 1/3 smaller than normal egg rolls. (But then again, they give you 3 of them.) And finally, my Hot Spicy Beef was also disappointing. It was overcooked with rubbery beef cuts. It wasn't hot or spicy either. I detected some red hot pepper specks here & there but I definitely couldn't taste any of them. If I see the red hot pepper warning symbol on the menu, I definitely want some real actual heat & flavor, please! Come on, what's the problem? The best I can say about Wong's Gormet is the food is cheap, it's made quickly, and it comes out piping hot. It might be a nice change for a family on a budget that's tired of fast food burgers and pizza. But personally, I'd rather go for a Big Mac or a Domino's Pizza instead of this stuff. Technically, it might not be as healthy but it definitely tastes better. BTW, if you want some good Asian food nearby, there are several EXCELLENT options within a 5 or 10 minute drive on Central Avenue and University Avenue. There are also a couple of decent buffets. It's not as bad as people say. Before this I usually went to Panda Express and lee Ann chin which isn't really Chinese food. This has more of a authentic taste. I always get the chicken lo mein and orange chicken and it's decent but the fried rice isn't good at all. The portions are big and they deliver. I live up the street from Wong's, and this place has been a staple of ours since we moved in. We have no complaints about the quality of the food - we actually quite enjoy it. My favorite dish is the chicken lo mein, but every dish we've ordered from here has been pretty good. Their combo deals can't be beat. For $8, you get a heaping pile of your entree plus an egg roll and chicken fried rice (I think it's even cheaper at lunch time - maybe $6?). The fried rice is just okay, but I like that it comes with the combo meals and you don't have to pay to upgrade to fried rice. Overall, this place isn't as bad as the other reviews may suggest. For all you Fridley/New Brighton/Spring Lake Park/Columbia Heights locals, it's one of the better Asian cuisine restaurants in the area and definitely worth a try. read more

Very disappointed. I ordered Szechaun Chicken and cream cheese puffs. The Cream Cheese puffs are pre made and manufactured elsewhere . Very little cheese. The Szechaun chicken was awful. The chicken was tasteless, rubbery, low grade and appears to be the kind that comes frozen in bags. Some is stringy, some big flat pieces that look scraped off of a chicken. The sauce was what I would call mild and tasted like soup broth. No choice of spiciness. Lots of vegetables. I would call this a manufactured food. Not even good enough in a pinch. Clearly they need to work on their kitchen skills before their web skills. The lo mein was very oily. So oily it was actually shiny. Not good. Now I have had plenty of Chinese in my life, and most of it has been moderate to excellent, but what I will say about this place, is that it's not even moderately good. It's bland. It's DEFINITELY not gourmet. The General Tso's Chicken wasn't spicy whatsoever, as a matter of fact I'm pretty sure that it was the same sauce as the sesame chicken, only they didn't put sesame seeds on it. Add to it that the chicken was soggy, the broccoli was soggy, and the fried rice had NO moisture, I thought my combo platter would have been better fed to my neighbors dog. The eggroll was fried in oil that wasn't hot enough which was evident by the fact that it too was soggy, and there was nothing delicious about what was inside of it. If there was one thing that could have saved my meal (and this review) it would have been the wontons... well up until you dipped them in the "sweet and sour sauce." The $12 I paid for my food ended up being a total waste. Not to mention the travel time there and back. I was highly disappointed with my food, and I don't plan on returning, or recommending them. read more

I had an errand in Fridley, so I wanted to try something new. Warning bring a very heavy sweater in winter, they don't turn the heat up past 69 when it's 3 outside. I tried the chicken with pineapple, it had a sweet sauce and it was just ok. Same with the eggroll and the sesame pork. Since no one has reviewed this yet, I'm guessing they go elsewhere for their Chinese fix. Canned soda is served. Everything about this place, food, decor, service is average. Nothing really gourmet about it. However when you go to use the bathrooms, they are shared with a pizza joint 2 doors down, and the aroma is fabulous. It's also a 5 star place. This was such a rip off. Ordered chicken chow mein and got a caron of celery. It was so bad couldn't even eat it. Was told the ere are different types of it. Not sure how I would know that. I have had it many times in my 62 years and never once has anyone past off celery in sauce as chow mein. I have gone there many times and during this time of struggle for small business u would think they would try to make a customer happy. They don't have to worry about me anymore. They offered no refund and were ok with taking my money and giving me nothing in return. If I wanted to donate my money, I would like to pick the charity. This was beyond awful. Every time we come it's always something. We paid before we ate and they told us to sit down and wait for our food. My husband and I got combination dinners which comes with fried rice and an egg roll. The egg roll was dripping in grease and bland. The fried rice was bland and so was my lo mien. Then when we left they ran after us accusing us of not paying! Pathetic thing is they did that to an elderly couple in front of us. We should have known better; if they're going to do that to them they'll do it to us. Do not go here. Save yourself the headache. There are better places to eat. Don't eat here! Never ordering again from here! The delivery driver ate some of my food! I called to ask why I was short wings and cheese puffs and said she packed them herself and the right amount there. Asked if the bag was open and it was! She called the driver and asked him and she said he said he didn't. Well of course he's going to deny it! To think I gave him a good tip too! Then didn't say sorry or offer to remedy anything after her driver denied it! I told her I wanted my money back or something and she then put me on hold. Came back and said my next cheese puffs and wings would be free. But honestly I don't even care I am disgusted, I will never redeem because I won't order from here again! We went there for takeout tonight (Friday) and ordered sesame chicken and beef broccoli with egg rolls on the side. We noticed that the buffet window was shut down and when we asked, they told us it was discontinued because they had poor public interest (take out was more popular). The dining room was completely empty when we arrived around 6pm and it remained so until our order was ready, within the 20 minutes they quoted us. When we got home I discovered they had given me someone else's order. My chicken dish was smothered in a dark sauce, with 4 pieces of broccoli. When I called the restaurant the female staff apologized and said she realized they'd make a mistake. They offered to give me the correct order if I wanted to come back, which we did. Sadly, the next dish didn't look much different, the sauce was a bit sweeter, but there were only a few sesame seeds sprinkled on the top, nothing incorporated into the sauce. The meal was mostly deep fried breading, I couldn't taste the chicken at all. And they didn't even offer a coupon or anything as service recovery for our troubles. I'll never go back. Terrible customer service. The food is alright, but twice in a row they have forgotten things from our order and when called and confronted about it, denied us ever ordering the things. The first time they completely forgot an order of shrimp fried rice and gave us a 2-liter of Coke instead of Pepsi (which Coke wasn't even on the original list they had). Second time they didn't give us the fried rice or egg rolls that come with combination platters and insisted that we didn't order the combinations... which doesn't make sense because the items we got are unavailable UNLESS you get the combo. Wong's underwent new management a while ago, and is better now. I've worked in Fridley about 10 years now, and I love Wong's. They are consistent quality, and the best Chinese food in the area. Now, if you think of places like LeeAnn Chin's as true Chinese food, you will honestly be disappointed. This is more authentic Chinese. The sweet and sour sauce is the best I've found, but if you're expecting what Americans think of as sweet and sour sauce, you will not like it. It's more sweet and tangy, and liquidy than ours. Even their fried chicken is good-it's DIFFERENT, but it's good. I didn't care much for their cream cheese wontons as the shell was thicker than I'm used to-but again, it's more authentic Chinese food than many of us are used to. I always get the sweet and sour chicken. It's delicious. My son LOVES the egg rolls here. My husband loves the Mongolian beef. You can also pick the spiciness now of how hot/not you want something to be. I will say their prices are very good-I recommend one of the combinations. It's the selection you choose plus a good size portion of chicken fried rice (free, but the upcharges to lomein or other things are a costly $2 more) plus an egg roll for $6-9. Chinese food is one of those "to each their own" kind of things, so it's hard to really read reviews about it. read more

It is supposed to be beef and broccoli but i have no idea what kind of "beef" this is its grey and slimy. I got a coupon in the mail and decided to try the new Chinese place in town. I wish I hadn't. The woman on the phone could not understand anything I was saying. It took about 20 minutes to order. I specifically asked if they could bring change because the total was a little over 40 and all I had was twenties and I wanted to tip, just not $20. The delivery took over an hour and the food was cold when it arrived. The delivery boy didnt have enough change so I had to tip ten dollars. There were rocks or sand in my fried rice so I had to throw it out, and to top it all off I didn't get any sauce for my ten dollar Moo Shu chicken, ruining it completely. What a waste of money.
