I contacted Wood's for a quote for a 2 head split ductless HVAC system. My house is contemporary and two other companies had quoted me at twice what I was looking to pay for the service AND were insisting on doing duct work. Josh came out and surveyed the property and came up with a plan that not only met my price range, but also made sense. The scheduling was quick and prompt. The crew was timely, clean, and efficient. The system was installed in one day. I was given a tutorial on how to use the system. There is financing available which I did not require it. Really great service from start to finish. Total rip off!! Called to get my AC unit repaired. They recommended a "tune-up". All the guy did was put some cheap plastic piece of equipment in my attic and hosed down my outside unit. He left with my payment and said someone would call me within the next day to come out because it probably just needed to be charged with refrigerant but he didn't have the equipment to do it on his truck! I had Wood's Heating for three winters. I started their service when I first moved in and had them service the unit before the winter. The service seemed to go fine, no problems. That was in Fall of 2021. In Spring of 2023, I had a company come in and do an energy audit. They said that when my unit was last serviced, the technician had messed up the settings and that my unit was incredibly inefficient. I had Wood's come back in, and the technician admitted they had been at fault. I spoke to customer service at Wood's and she repeatedly told me it was my fault for not alerting them. Well, I had no idea how long the oil should have lasted as they messed up the system before I ever turned it on; it never occurred to me that Wood's is totally incompetent and that's why I was spending so much in heating oil. After running the system for about a month without their "maintenance", I realize they cost me thousands of dollars in oil over two winters. DO NOT use these people. The worst customer service I've ever experienced. I had a better experience at the DMV. They installed mini splits in the fall and within 3 months they stopped working. Had to wait over a week for service and within a month they stopped working again. The people on the phone were incredibly rude and on did not even know what a mini split is. Wood's did a great job! They walked me through all the hoops of switching from oil to natural gas during a crazy pandemic. The furnace we had was original to the house from 1950 and was on its way out. The duck-tape that held it together wasn't gonna cut it anymore. Wood's helped me figure out my RISE loan and made sure all the quotes and equipment met their needs. They were quick and efficient, coordinated all parties and were in and out in a few days. We had our annual furnace service today. I mentioned to the service tech I had noticed my chimney & cap were black. Also i had seen some soot on the top of the furnace. When he took the top off the furnace he was SHOCKED at the amount of soot inside & stated it had not been cleaned in YEARS. So thanks so much Woods for coming out every year and neglecting to do that. Took him almost an hour to vacuum it clean. Regretfully, I closed my account with Wood's Heating. I started with Wood's in the 1970,s and remained a customer for most of the time I lived in Rhode Island. When they were purchased by Petro Oil, I still remained a customer. Petro went bankrupt and was taken over by a Philadelphia company. The customer service that was once provided by the Wood's family no longer exists, and Wendy Woods is now the "manager". Installed a mini-split ac unit 4 seasons ago. These units are not supposed to lose freon or need to be recharged. When our ac didn't work during the 1st heat wave, Woods wouldn't book an appoint to come out for 6 weeks! We had another company come & they told us the installation was done poorly & that is why it is leaking. A month later, again, we are all out of freon. Woods is taking no responsibility what so ever. I have been a customer for 3 years, paying the yearly contract fee for 3 years which includes an annual service. I didn't need service the first year because it had been done just before we moved in. When we finally got around to scheduling service we had to wait several months to get an appointment. Woods cancelled on the day of the appointment causing considerable disruption to my day that I had rearranged to make the appointment. When I called back, as the message asked me to do, the woman on the other end was very rude to me and told me they would call me the next week and fit me in sometime and let me know they were booking 5 months out. I told her I was very disappointed about the inconvenience and that as my contract was nearly up I would take this into consideration when thinking about renewing. In response, woods promptly delivered me half a tank of heating oil at more than twice current market rate, and billed me for the contract which wasn't due for another month. I also never got the call to reschedule. 3 service fees and never got service! And when I signed up I was told I was locking in a rate each year that I would never pay above that but I would get market rate if it was lower. What a pack of lies! We bought a house with a "less than a year old" oil heater (installed by woods). They won't honor the warranty without being a contract customer. Sounds like extortion to me.. their oil is to expensive to even consider it. Edit: we had another hvac company come to troubleshoot the issue. Woods in stalled the wiring backwards. The 1st floor controlled the 2nd and vice-versa. Bad install for sure, cost us $$$ for their Mickey Mouse work. read more

I used Wood's for about a year for my oil heating needs. Thankfully, I recently switched to gas heat so I don't need to bother with them anymore. A couple of examples of the issues I had: 1. We had an old oil burner that needed some maintenance. After maintenance work was done on it, within a couple of days the oil line started leaking creating a strong odor in the house. Shouldn't the maintenance guy have noticed this potential problem? 2. Also within a few days of the maintenance, the circulator that leads to our baseboard heat broke. Again, shouldn't the guy have noticed this when he came in to do the maintenance? Or perhaps he accidentally broke it himself and didn't say anything - it appeared that he did more harm than good! 3. Other times we had issues with the steam heat radiators, Wood's would send clueless repairmen, one after another. There was one that did a great job for us, but I believe it was our third try. Frustrating. I could very easily give one star, but they get an additional star for a very friendly customer service staff. read more

These guys are awful. When I bought my house I knew it needed a new boiler and my parents raved about how great Wood's is. I called them to get an estimate. The sales guy was very nice and knew his stuff. The install went well and the technicians were great guys. I opted for a tankless hot water heater to save on electric. Highly recommend going that route if you're buying a new boiler. After I paid them around $7500 for the new boiler they informed me that they would only sell oil to me COD at the highest price. They said my credit was not good enough to have them do auto delivery and get a fair price. I asked if I could give them a check for $2,000 and just debit out the oil they deliver from that and they said no. The price they were charging me was about a $1.00 more per gallon. My tank is 275 gallons so you do the math. I filled up once with them and that was it. I will never use this company again. Oil is oil, I could care less who delivers it, just give me a fair price. Woods Oil did it again. I did get rid of them the middle of October, best choice I ever made. I started with Bradley Oil and when sold it became Woods Oil and I remained with them until last month, many years. They installed a brand new $8,000 furnace in June which probably should of worked the first time I turned it on. Well, of course that wasn't the case. In November I turned the furnace on for the 1st time and the heat was so insufficient that I had to have someone come in to take a look. The reason was the end switch was not wired at a cost to me of $101.25. This was one of many situations I've had with them. To many excuses and not so true responses from them; that was kindly put. I selected woods because they were the only one who would come out when I first bought my house and I didn't notice the tank was empty and it was a super cold weekend day. I stayed with them because they offered auto delivery and spread out payments. I am leaving because they have become ridiculously priced. Way way way higher priced than competitors and on top of that they call me every month to tell me I have payments over due when I just paid more than required last month, it's like I can't keep up. Financially their company is taking a toll on my account and now they don't even have people in the office on weekends anymore. But the price, man the company really needs to reflect current prices. A few years ago Woods convinced me it was time to get a new furnace AND oil tank because there was a rebate of $1500. AFTER having the furnace and oil tank installed, the rebate was no longer available!!! The oil tank they installed was HALF the size of the original so I am now unable to purchase oil from small companies that will only deliver 200 gallons! Finally, the gauge they installed on the tank was faulty so I never knew the amount in the tank. But Woods assured me that my tank would NEVER run dry with their auto-delivery. WRONG! The tank ran dry TWICE and I was charged to prime the pump when they delivered the oil. What a fool I was to stay with them as long as I did. And to top this all off, their prices for oil are CRAZY!!! read more

My family has had woods service for years and worked with them through financial hardships and were very patient. My husband and I moved into an older home and need some updates, I became and contracted customer with set rates and services for the year (well worth it!) Recently Woods work with us and Mass Save to install a new boiler and hot water tank, with all new piping and also taking old radiators out and putting in new baseboard! It took 3 days total and they were very generous to make sure we always had heat and hot water before they left, knowing it was going to be cold/freezing temps. The installers kept us up to date on daily activities because we have 2 dogs and a cat and had to plan around them. They were always on time every morning, they were also very covid safe and animal friendly! After all was done they cleaned very well and talked with my husband about things we should know and what to look for. With going through Mass Save they even helped us make sure we could get all the rebates possible that applied to all the work they did! Highly recommend them and there services read more

I have been using Woods since I bought my house in 2018 with a contract. Never realized just how expensive their oil was because I was at work 5 days a week and always had the heat turned down when not there. Being home 24/7 because of Covid I Just got an email bill from them yesterday for $512.00, I could have sh**. The invoice made no mention of how many gallons or how much per gallon, just how I could pay. When I called they told me it $3.39 a gallon and immediately offered to take $50.00 off the bill or I could go back to my old rate which was $2.99 a gallon (still high). Overpriced oil! Their excuse was that I have a contact (which was close to $300.00) When I asked about having my boiler cleaned she mentioned June but would get back to me. Found a site on online called Bolierjuice.com. I could have oil delivered for $2.04 a gallon within 4 days. I'm dropping Woods like a hot potato. They are hugely gouging you on oil prices. They charge some of the highest prices in the state for oil. They state they are a "full service" oil company. They charge $0.75 to $1.00 more per gallon over Cash On Delivery oil companies. Wood's price is never listed on their website but there are plenty of places listed on http://www.newenglandoil.com/ri.htm that beat them by $1.00 a gallon. At 100 gallons or more per fill up, that adds up to several hundred dollars per season. What does that extra money get you? The ability to call 24 hours a day if your heat stops working. Does that extra $ get you free repairs? Nope, that will cost you $234 a year for a service plan that may or may not cover the parts needed for the repair. If you have a heating system that's new and won't need repair, plan on paying $500-$600 more per year over their competition. read more

This review has long been forthcoming and dwelling in the back of my mind for over a year now. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not incredibly savvy when it comes to the dynamics of what it takes to heat a home. I've always lived in apartments where the heat sourcing was electric. Back in 2008-09 when I moved into our first rented house on Broadway (up until then I was an apartment girl) and ran into issue after issue thanks to a deadhead of a landlord, it was actually Wood's that went above and beyond their call of duty to help us. We first called Wood's in Jan of '09 for help when our oil tank essentially exploded all over the basement floor causing massive damage to our belongings that we kept in storage. Technically, because our landlord did not have a full contract on file with them (only to fill the tank periodically), their hands were tied with what they could do to help. (The exception to this, of course, would be if our landlord called in to make a payment for servicing up front and -then- placed the order for repair.) Charlie and I totally understood this and made many, numerous attempts to make contact with our home's owner and maintenance man, to no avail. To make matters worst, the three radiators throughout the house were very, very old and in terrible disrepair. (They were the original units from the turn of the century when the house was first built and leaked, with no exaggeration, gallons all over the rotting floor boards.) Eventually the situation escalated when there was a sudden carbon monoxide leak causing everyone in the home to become ill (including my poor kitty). When we called Wood's to check if our landlord had contacted them for the repair order, even though he hadn't, a serviceman came over in less than thirty minutes despite the heavy snow at the time and late hour in the evening. & even though they absolutely were not obligated to, the serviceman did everything he could to temporarily fix our problems (including the issues with the radiators despite not actually being related to the oil tank dilemma). In the end, the unit itself needed to be completely replaced and a very long story made short, and several visits by Wood's later, we moved less than a month following. Wood's service was exemplary, commendable and just so gosh darn appreciated that, despite that year of living in that horrific apartment, I'll always remember the efforts they gave in an attempt to help us especially during some a busy time of year. When we first called, it was a no hold barred, desperate S.O.S. as we'd been living with no heat for days in the middle of a snowy, frigid winter week. I didn't expect anything more than basic guidance as to how we could force our landlord to request a repair. So, thank you Wood's, for helping us through a very tough situation. Should ye be a poor soul stuck with an oil heater, I can't recommend them enough. read more

They didn't seem surprised at my decision as there was no explanation other than" we are a full service company" and "Will your new supplier come out at 2 in the morning?" So, if I buy 1000 gallons over the course of a year and pay more than $1/ gal. above many other companies price, the extra $1000 is to get a service man to my house in the middle of the night??? Had split packs for a/c put in summer of 2013. They had to come back 3 times that summer for repair. Twice the next summer, no cooling again and each summer up to 2017. Waited all day this summer, day off from work and he shows up at 4:30pm. Tells me I have to make another appt. 3 days later the service tech hadn't put in a work order. Done with this company. Called another company and they found 3 leaks in the system so that meant Woods techs never found the leaks, each year the coolant would leak out, they would recharge the system and never fixed the problem. I have to use the due to my landlord but hopefully he will switch to gas like he says. They also sent an oil delivery when I didn't need one. They get away with this because home heating oil is not regulated by the p.u.c. which it should when companies like this gouge the price and nothing can be done. I've called the attorney general and also the p.u.c. and next will be my representatives to try get that regulated so companies like this can't screw people that are stuck doing business with them. Last year, when we were paying WAY more per gallon than any other full service oil company, I called to complain. I was told they purchased oil for the season in August and prices were higher in August (I checked, they were--but not quite the high rate they were charging). So I called this year and complained about why my per gallon rate was so much higher than EVERYONE ELSE. I was told THIS TIME that it was because Wood's is a full service company. I told the woman what I'd been told last year, that the price should be what it was in August: $2.33. I was paying $3.15 (in case you don't think that's a big deal, based on our last delivery, we would have paid $133 LESS on our bill). She acted (and I'm pretty certain it was the same woman) like I was crazy, that no one would EVER have said that. I'm DONE! Either she was lying now or lying then, but either way, she LIED. Then she went on to say I was capped at $3.15 per gallon and my price would never go higher, and if it was lower, I would pay the lower price. Ummm... the price IS LOWER and she would not honor the real price as listed at http://www.energy.ri.gov/energy-prices/heating-oil/. LIES LIES LIES. Oh, and their claim that the reason the price is higher is because they are full service? Another lie. I've used Wood's for the 20 odd years I've owned my own home. With a service contract (yep, it's not free) they've come to my house at 11pm and repaired a broken circulator -- for the cost of parts. They've replaced the original asbestos lined burner and electric hot water heater with an oil fired heater. The ROI on the water heater was under 2 years & the far more efficient burner started paying off in 5. We even got a sweet financing deal. Service has always been excellent, automated oil deliveries always have enough flex so that a report of upcoming blizzards are never an issue. My parents used their services starting in 1950. I remember burner service men coming once and awhile fixing what needed to be fixed & leaving -- with no complaints from my father. That's amazing! Few businesses (none?) are perfect, so some people may have had issues and conflicts with Wood's. However, for a company to have stayed around as long as they have, most people must find them a better than average company, with services and products well worth paying for. I was amazed to see the low rating here, and I suspect it's mostly because customers who are satisfied simply aren't reviewing, and those with issues are. read more

I used Wood's heating for five or six years and every year I had to call to get a better price for oil when I compared Wood's price to the going rate in Rhode Island. Their prices were always at least $.50 a gallon higher than anyone else and when I'd call to question the high rate, they'd give me a slightly better deal that was still higher than anyone else. They always acted as though they were doing me a favor as a preferred customer and still I'd be paying more than anyone I knew. Since I finally and thankfully switched companies, I'm paying as much as a dollar less a gallon than what Wood's charged me as a "valued" customer. After several years and multiple screw ups, I finally left. I bought service contracts and was told it would be 5 months before i could get a furnace cleaning this year. Last year they did the cleaning, and jump wired my furnace so that it kept going when they left--the house reached over 100 degrees while I was out. They screwed up my billing every time. I scheduled auto delivery every year, but they kept calling to see if I needed oil. And the reviewer who talked about wayyyy overpricing is correct.
