Wren had been on my list for a while, and finally dined there last night. Really enjoyed the overall experience - 4.5 stars. Wren is located at the top of the Watermark Hotel in Tysons, part of Capital One Center and also home to the Starr Hill Biergarten & the Perch. We parked in the parking garage at Capital One Center and took the elevator up to the 11th floor where the restaurant/hotel was located (must admit - not great signage, I was grateful for one sign in the elevator area which confirmed which floor to go to). Elevator lets you out to the outdoor area where you can see the biergarten and the Perch and the other areas; hotel is around the corner. You walk into the hotel and pass the front desk area to the right, but it's easy to spot the restaurant (they are on the same floor; hotel rooms are actually below). Checked in at the host stand and were led to a nice two-top near the window. Bar is a decent size and was full; there are also 4-tops lining the window and on both ends of the restaurant/bar area. Others have commented that you definitely do feel like you're dining in a hotel lobby - they aren't wrong (but it's a pretty lobby). There was definitely a buzz, and there was a company party going on at the other side of the bar - frankly, the place was hopping. This isn't where you want to go for a quiet dinner. Our server was Felipe, who was excellent and explained the menu well for us first-timers, was definitely on top of things and was constantly checking to ensure dishes were coming out. I know Wren is known for its cocktails, but to be honest, my husband and I prefer wine, and I appreciated their selection of wines by the glass as well as bottles (given that it's a hotel and hotels are often stocked with cheaper/popular selections, I didn't expect to see Torrontes by the glass, for example). Now, onto the food. Since it was our first time, we wanted to try as much as possible. We love raw preparations (with the exception of oysters) so ordered the cured trout, tuna, and wagyu tartare dishes. All were excellent, with a great element of acidity in each - I preferred the trout (I love aioli) and my husband preferred the tuna; we both loved the wagyu. Next, we had to try the fried chicken, which I admit I was a little worried about because early reviews suggested it was really spicy, which my husband often can't tolerate. The chicken wasn't spicy at all (not sure if it's supposed to be any more) but had a nice sweet/barely spicy balance and was quite crispy. We thought about getting mains but ended up ending with more small dishes, ending with the pork belly bao buns and the black cod. I think the black cod was our favorite dish of the night - the flavors + the fried rice were just terrific and honestly, it just melted in your mouth. Buns were good too - similar to others we have had before. They had a special bread pudding dessert which they gifted to us (not sure why - we told them it was our first time, but heck, I'll take it) and it was delicious and not too heavy. Chef was walking around all night talking to tables although we didn't get a chance to chat with him. Overall - well done, Wren! Again, if you are looking for a quiet evening out, this isn't your place. But go for the well-executed food, drink and very interesting vibe...and you can shop at Wegmans after for the ultimate suburban date night! I look forward to returning. read more

My husband and I tried Wren when we stayed at the Watermark on V-day weekend! After we checked in the front desk staff highly recommended we get a reservation for dinner. I have to say from start to finish, everything was amazing!!! The restaurant itself is very "sexy-chic" and great for girls or date nights. I started with the Tokyo Girl drink...10/10. Our waiter also told us it was a creation of one of the Wren bartenders, which was cool! For dinner, since it was a tapas-style restaurant, we ordered a few items. I ranked them below from our most favorite, to least favorite (but again everything was good): 1. Brussel sprouts - AMAZINGGGG!! Like top 2 of all the Brussels I have tasted ever!! 2. Corn kaki-age tempura - Different but still delish! Nice and crispy. 3. Wagyu Toban - Delicious burger and fries, no complaints! 4. Checked out Wren for our 2022 New Years Eve dinner. Loved the decor, furniture and table setup. It's technically in the hotel lobby but felt a lot fancier than it sounded online. Getting right to it all of our food was delicious. My favorites being the Tokyo chicken and steak which came Wasabi mashed potatoes that were out of this world. Really enjoyed our drinks even though I can't remember the name of the flower one I got. Staff was really friendly but service was a little slow considering we went early at 7:30 attempting to beat the New Year's dinner party crowd. It was also super dim in there; moody speakeasy vibes. I started with the City Hawk cocktail and the sake really came through. My friend got the citrus basil refresher. Our waiter told us the basil flavor does not come through and he was right. We started with edamame and the special spicy tuna. The edamame was good and a generous portion. It was perfectly salted. The spicy tuna special was spicy and tasty. The chips were salty. I really liked this dish. Then the Tokyo chicken and boa bun. We both loved the bai bun. The combination f flavors and textures blew me away. This may have been my favorite dish . The Tokyo chicken was also delicious and flavorful. The quantity was surprising and generous. However, I think it tastes better in the restaurant than reheated the next day. Despite some of the reviews this place is really really good. Pricey,,,yes! BUT well worth it. After a long beach vacation we headed back to VA for work. Booked into the Watermark hotel starving. Wren was in the lobby so we tried it. $220 later we had an amazingly expensive dinner we would do again. The portions are small but packed a punch. Trout, wagyu, black code. Its all there. Came here with 4 other people for a work happy hour and tried a lot of the drinks and smaller plates. The best part of this restaurant is definitely the taste of the food and drinks and the speed of the service, that's about it though. Cocktails are mostly $18 with some at $16 and some even more expensive which is definitely high for the area and they're not that large. The food although definitely pricey was very delicious. My favorite for the taste was the duck, cooked perfectly. My favorite for the value was the chicken which was a pretty large portion and was very very good. The bao were also good. Although the scallops tasted great, they were pretty small and the bacon wasn't crispy so the mouth feel wasn't the best. Some things I didn't really like were the prices, which I've already mentioned, and the friendliness of the service. The waiter was nice but didn't really interact with us besides taking our order, normally at nicer restaurants they try to get to know you a little better. Also, when we left no one said bye or thank you for coming which is pretty standard for a restaurant. Not required, but if you're spending $400+ on dinner and drinks it would be nice to have some better hospitality. read more

Disappointing experience at Wren last night. First things first though - it can be difficult to find. If you enter the capital one building (shared with Wegmans) you need to go up to the 11th floor where the rooftop brewery is and walk across the courtyard to the Watermark Hotel. The restaurant is in the hotel lounge. And that is where the disappointment begins - you definitely feel as though you are eating in a hotel lobby - there is no personality or intimacy to the space. Secondly (and I know this is a problem industry wide) the service is not great. There is little to no polish, servers and hosts weren't particularly personable, they had a lack of knowledge of the menu and drink list. Most of the workers didn't seem like they wanted to be there. Now for the food. There were some serious highlights - the oysters were fresh and delicious. The Brussels sprouts were amazing - the mustard vinaigrette gave it a nice zing while the flash fried leaves added a really nice crunch. The ramen broth was very nice with lots of umami from the miso and the roast pork inside was flavorful. The pork belly bao buns were really good too. I wouldn't say they're anything you couldn't get at several other Asian restaurants - but they were good nonetheless. The hamachi tartare was underwhelming - the flavor of the chips it's served with overpowered the flavor of the fish. The special for the evening was seared ahi tuna with what I think was supposed to be a ponzu sauce with caviar on top. The whole thing just ate really bland - except for the raw red onions piled high and the fried garlic on top - both of which were way overpowering. I did manage to get one bite that felt balanced because it had the right mix of sauce and caviar - but overall that dish was a dud. Our biggest problem with Wren was the price considering the serving sizes. We mentioned to our server that the portions were tiny - and his response was "well yea, that's the concept - it's all meant to be shared". Hmm... we'll if it's meant to be shared you need to have more than a bite or two available per plate! We had high expectations after reading many positive reviews of Wren, but I have a hard time believing it will last very long as there are very few (if any) stand out features of this restaurant. The food is average to slightly above average, the prices are high, and the service and setting are underwhelming. read more

Great food and drinks, but I recommend managing your expectations especially if you're coming here after reading their feature in the WashPo lol. It is indeed a bar in a hotel lobby with vibe-killing hotel music... nothing fancy. The hosts are all wearing jeans. The food and drinks though are awesome and I'd come back for more! Service was attentive as well. We ordered their duck and foie gras special and it was amazing. The Tokyo chicken is like crispy karaage but with a delicious glaze and slaw. Pork belly bao buns were yummy and have those pickled veggies that are in Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches. The miso ramen and mochi doughnuts were great as well. Drinks are on the pricey side but very elegantly presented. Wren is a great place to dine with interesting and tasty food, a good vibe and a really interesting location.  Perched atop, well, the Perch, Wren opens up to the amazing roof top common area.  It is quite a mind bend to get in an elevator and ride up to the roof only to exit and peer out on a green space complete with food trucks (apparently hoisted up by cranes), a dog park, putt putt course and so much more.  The evenings we have been, the green has been filled with families and dogs and live music and is wonderful place to relax and stroll.  Then you look over the edge and your mind startles to see that you are on the top of the building with a view of Tysons laid out before you...  Wren itself is spacious and nicely decorated. The vibe is lively without being loud and conversations at a table are easily heard.  The menu is interesting, and the food is really good.  We especially enjoyed the brussels sprouts, the chicken, the corn fritters, well, I guess everything we have ordered there in the three times we have visited.  We have had consistently great service except for the ending of our last meal there were we couldn't find our server after waiting a really long time for the bill.  On the good side, we had excellent dinner companions, a happily satisfied stomach and were enjoying the view out the large glass windows.  We would definitely eat at Wren again (and, since we have already booked our fourth outing there for next month) really enjoy introducing this whole Wren/perch to friends and family. read more

I'd say this was a 3.5. Beautiful concept. Lovely hotel and gorgeous dining room overlooking lovely Tysons (that's sarcasm, but it was nice seeing all the lights and being up high overlooking the area). Because there was a big event going on at the hotel, parking was difficult, and we couldn't park on level 4 or 5, which had the access to the hotel. Please plan accordingly if you have a timed reservation. It took quite a while to get to the parking garage and find a spot, then we wasted more time trying to find a way into the hotel. We ordered oysters, hamachi carpaccio, kakuni kushi and tokyo chicken. Only the tokyo chicken was a decent portion, and the most reasonably priced. But everything was well made and the service was efficient. Will I go back? No! I love authentic Japanese food, and this wasn't it. And I'm happy with less expensive fare. read more

When we arrived, they checked us in, yet didn't acknowledge my severe strawberry allergy or my birthday. It doesn't cost anything to say "happy birthday" to someone, yet means a lot. Ambiance was trying to be glamorous but was clearly a bar/lounge that was plopped in the middle of a lobby. The cascading flower accents were pretty, but I wish the tables were more spread out. We saw more seating downstairs but we didn't get seated there. We ordered quite a few dishes, but the service was severely lacking. After we ordered initially (bao buns, tokyo chicken, corn tempura, rickey drink, wren concoction), our waitress disappeared behind the bar completely and rarely checked on us. The expeditor was pretty much the only one we saw and occasionally, a waiter filling our waters. They didn't ask how anything was the entire 2 hours we were there. FOOD/DRINK: The mocktail (wren's concoction) was HUGE and pretty good, but needed less lime and more OJ. It was lacking sweetness. Hubby's rickey drink was strong, but good. The bao buns were pretty solid, but a little spicy. It would have been nice to note the sauce was spicy on the menu. The tokyo chicken was easily the BEST thing we had. It was amazing and perfectly crisp. Highly addictive. The corn tempura was a nice option if you're vegetarian but fell apart easily. It would have been better as fritters. We wouldn't get it again. Next, we ordered the wagyu burger and fries to split and the shishito peppers. The peppers were with a ponzu sauce and were blistered to perfection. The burger was juicy and rich (see pic) with a buttered bun and all. I'm glad we split it because I don't think I could have eaten a whole one due to the decadence. The fries were crisp but had a building heat. Again, it would be great if this was noted on the menu. Lastly, we ordered dessert. I got the mochi donuts and hubby got the mousse. He also got the nightcap drink, while I got the ginger pear tea. The mochi donuts were absolutely delicious. They were crisp, yet soft inside, and came with matcha creme sauce. The mousse was rich and chocolately. We requested no strawberries (as I have an allergy) and we had to flag down someone to ask for them to be taken off. They gave them to us on the side (why??). The nightcap was $19!!! and definitely not worth the price, as it was 90% whipped cream. My tea came out as lemon ginger and I was not asked/told about the substitution. It was $6 for the pot and I was disappointed I didn't get the tea I wanted. Our waitress came with the check before dessert and looked annoyed we were staying longer. Nothing special was done for my birthday, not even a candle. With the bill being a hefty $133 before tip, we will be thinking twice before coming here again after the service we had. read more

I had my service dog with me and the host very clearly didn't know how to handle it. He went to ask his manager and they both tried to seat my party on the opposite side of the restaurant away from other guests where the tables only had coffee tables. When I mentioned we were there for dinner and it'd be difficult to eat off of a low coffee table, they still tried to force us there saying because of my dog they felt that spot was best. I said it's against ADA to place me anywhere differently because of my service dog. I had asked on 2 occasions to be sat by the window as that's where the view was. When I confirmed it was a service animal, the manager looked at my dog very obviously questioning its validity as a service animal. When we were finally sat, we were sat at the very end of the restaurant far away from other guests. If all of the above hadn't already happened, I wouldn't have cared, but it was just an overall unpleasant experience before being sat. The service from our server was thankfully good. What a great cocktail bar with great food in Tysons Corner VA! Tyson's definitely needed a new cocktail bar and this one is it!! The atmosphere itself and breathtaking, the service and staff are so pleasant. I can't wait till next summer to hangout in their patio section that is also pet friendly. Wow! Hotel lobby restaurants have come a long way. This place has great decor, a cool vibe and awesome sunset views (if you time it right). Service- waiter was friendly but wasn't in line with all the rave reviews I've heard about at this place. Seemed a little frazzled when we asked him questions, forgot to check in and bring things when asked, etc. Drinks - unfortunately only one of us were drinking but cocktail menu looked great. Their silky and sordid dirty martini tasted great but it comes in the tiniest of glasses and had large olives in it that took up half the space. Not to mention - don't promote it with feta-blue cheese stuffed olives and then not give them to us. We had to go back and ask for them. Was not worth the money at all. The other drink that was tried was a major deviation from a martini - but held true to our love for vodka - the singing in the rain. This drink was better presented in. A more acceptable size glass and seems like my friend enjoyed it but also didn't rave about it. Other members at the table ordered lemonade and were not impressed. The carafes they serve the water in were cool and we appreciated that they leave one at the table. Food - lets see - so much to talk about out...we started with the edamame, the hamachi carpaccio was fine and there was an excellent salmon tuna speciality roll available on weekends. The table enjoyed the beet and octopus salads respectively (though there was lot of flavors going on for me in the octopus one)...the Toyko chicken is a highly recommended dish there and did not disappoint the table. The group also very much enjoyed the pork belly bao buns and the wagu fried rice. But the standout dish of the night was the miso marinated black cod. I'm not usually a cod eater but this was amazing - right flavor profile and balance, and the fish was cooked perfectly. Dessert - I didn't partake so can't speak to it but looked delish - some sort of chocolate caramel soufflé with berries. Cost - seemed like individual plates were high for sizes initially but the dishes were not as small as we were led to believe. And total bill was not as high as expected (maybe because so many of us were not drinking this particular night) Overall, started out skeptical but a few of the star dishes and the ambiance really turned it around. I think my husband had short ribs or something like that and he wouldn't share it with me so must've been amazing. I found the staff to be friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. Thoroughly enjoyed! Unfortunately they were sold out of Wagyu fried rice - so I'll have to come back and try it out. Favorite dish was gyu filet mignon with smashed potatoes and wagyu demi espuma - would have ordered one for each of us. We got hamachi carpaccio (nice pieces of fish but the sauce could've used some heat), ishiyaki wagyu A5 wagyu 2oz on a stone rock (stone rock needed to be hotter and retain heat longer) but loved the experience, gindara miso black cod was delicious, gyu filet mignon with smashed potatoes and wagyu demi espuma was favorite of the night and both mocktail offerings along with a sushi roll. Sushi wasn't worth it, but everything else was great. Food quality was on point. Ambiance is definitely worth the hype on the 11th floor of the capital one building. Nice dim lights. Perfect for date night, anniversary, or couples celebrating a birthday. Service was pretty solid. We had Ming. They were there when you needed them and were attentive. Timing was very well executed with bringing out the dishes with time to enjoy it and not feel rushed. Some people dress up or dress down. We dressed up and thoroughly enjoyed it. Some of the bar staff here are not welcoming to all guests. The bartender closed my menu while I was looking at it and it took like 20 mins to get my poorly made $17 drink. I have been to Wren twice and was treated poorly both times. I do not recommend anyone go to Wren if you want to have a nice evening. It's overpriced hotel food and drinks that aren't good served by people who have no idea what customer service is. Also it's weird they hold on to your credit card if you want to start a tab.
