Admittedly when I first heard of this cafe, I had some skepticism. I thought it was just another cafe that was riding on the trend of adding adaptogens to drinks. And it soooorrt of still is, but they've executed it so well that I let my gatekeepyness down. I really dig this place! The ambience is lovely, and you can tell there's been an incredible amount of effort put into the ~* vibe ~* of this spot. Their deco are more like art installations, which are fungi-themed. I got the Strange Magic with decaf espresso and oat milk. It was really freakin' tasty! It had that umami mushroom flavor, but it really added to the drink and made it unique. I asked afterwards what mushrooms they added, and it was lion's mane and cordyceps. I did feel a bit of an energy boost from the cordyceps, which uhh, maybe wasn't the best thing to have at 3pm if I wanted to sleep at night So here are my gripes with this cafe: 1) There's hardly any transparency as to what mushrooms you're drinking. It's such a missed opportunity to have cool info graphics or descriptions of the benefits of the shrooms. And isn't that the selling point of adaptogens to begin with? It'd be cool to know that, for example, Strange Magic was good for studying because it increases brain function and memory, as well as give you a boost of energy to power through a study night. 2) I'm not 100% sure on how the coffee is served at this particular cafe, but I don't like that the mushroom coffee bags are ground coffee. I think in the cafe, they grind whole beans separately and then add mushroom extract because I was able to get decaf with mushroom in it. For the take-home bags, I get that it makes mixing the mushroom powder (hopefully extract and not just straight raw powder--I think it's extract bc the mushroom flavor was pretty apparent to me) more even, but I feel like I would be sacrificing coffee flavors. There's plenty of powdered adaptogen extracts that can be found, so if I were interested in making my own adaptogenic blend, it wouldn't be too hard. The shop seems to be aware of this, so they sell whole beans. But honestly I'd be more likely to buy extract powder if they offered it. 3) It is pretty expensive. Expect to pay $6-8 for a drink. It does have more benefits than the average latte, but DAMN that's kind of a lot. read more

An absolutely delightful experience. The space is tastefully designed and comfortable. First time in. The staff was warm and welcoming. Taking me through the menu and explaining the benefits of adaptogens. I decided on the Strange Brew and Egg sandwich. Both were exceptional. The sandwich is delicious. Ok, I feel like Seattle's coffee scene has gone through some major ebbs and flows when it comes to experimental/fun/flavored coffee. It seems like back in the day, you could find all sorts of cinnamon toast lattes and orange mocha stuff. Then...the coffee snobs said no. Single origin only. No flavor. Americanos or shots. Idk. It all got very boring. So, with that biased history lesson intro, I'm really glad to see Wunderground bringing some fun variation to the local coffee scene. But...I wish it wasn't quite so spendy. But I get it. Good stuff should cost a bit. Nice things are quality and quality should be compensated for. And Wunderground is admittedly pretty fun. The inside is cute and decorated in a way that deviates at least a little from the drab, white washed design of 99% of new coffee shops these days. The staff were super friendly and informative and nice. I grabbed the chocolate version of their vanilla brainwash, strange magic. No difference in the mushrooms in those two, just in flavor. It was good. Nice and full of coffee flavor but the mocha come through strong and not too sweet, with just a hint of something extra. And I deliberated between the spicy portobello sandwich and their brain boost bowl and decided to go for the bowl. It was honestly really good. Not a lot of food and not heavy but good quality ingredients. The olive oil was really nice tasting even, and the herbs were fresh. Overall, it's good. A brand new cafe has entered the neighborhood! Formerly a Cupcake Royale location, the new Wunderground cafe is definitely a step in a different direction. But holy cow, this place looks slick! I love the new customer seating layout with a wide assortment of tables, booths, and seating areas where you can fly solo on your laptop, meet with a friend, or have a group of friends gathered. But enough about the space, let's talk food and drinks... Mushroom infused coffee? Yup! Might sound weird. Does not taste weird though. Tastes great actually! Apparently there are lots of health benefits to including more mushrooms in your daily diet, so why not make it a part of your coffee routine? If this whole idea still sounds utterly bizarre to you, here's the bottom line: It still tastes like delicious coffee. I've had both their Brain Child and Hocus Pocus blends, and I can't say that the flavor of fungus ever jumped out on my taste buds. And it really doesn't cost that much different than your regular latte or drip coffee from any other specialty espresso bar. So if my cup of coffee can wake me up, taste good, and also include additional health benefits, I'm not about to complain. But hey, maybe mushroom coffee still doesn't interest you. Maybe you don't even like coffee. I have good news for you: Their food is AWESOME. Their head chef Alyssa Lisle is a culinary magician who is incapable of making a bummer dish. Pastries, grain bowls, sandwiches, and salads are all available throughout the day and I am gradually making my way through the whole menu one lunch break at a time. So far my favorites have been the Brain Boost Grain Bowl, and the Tofu Sandwich. All relatively healthy options as well, which has been great as I have been trying to ween myself off Dick's and Ezell's as my regular go-to's for midday sustenance. So whether you buy into the hype about putting mushrooms in your coffee or not, do yourself a favor and give this place a shot. The space looks fantastic, the food is delicious, and the coffee is still a delicious cup of well crafted coffee. read more

The drink tasted burnt and bitter; for the first time, I couldn't finish my coffee which was upsetting. Ordered a latte with a Brainwash Boost. What the signage doesn't tell you is that the Brainwash isn't just made from fungi - it includes maple sugar also. I have been watching fantastic fungi, taking lions mane daily and have been thinking about taking a mycelium class. So I was pumped when I stumbled on wunderground. tldr; super cute cafe with good drinks and nice working spaces visited on a wednesday afternoon with a friend. the interior was very cute, and so was all of the decoration! i ordered the brain wash, which was their latte + housemade herbal mushrooms vanilla syrup. the latte was good but nothing special. the syrup didn't taste anything like mushrooms to me. I know the reason it's expensive is due to the herbal mushroom, but i still thought $7 + tax + tip for a coffee was a bit much. baristas are friendly and service was quick. my friend and i did some work at the cafe, and loved their music selection. (chill/lofi type songs without words) i think this place is definitely worth a visit if you're curious about their drinks or enjoy cafes with an aesthetically pleasing interior !! it was a bit far for me, but i want to revisit and try some of their other drinks + food menu items next time! read more

Possibly, one of the worst sandwiches I've ever been given at a restaurant. Utterly tasteless. This was touted as having mushrooms and avocado. There were about five or six paper-thin slices of mushroom and a thin smear of avocado paste mixed with a very oily mayo, none of which you could taste over the cold, hard, difficult-to-chew roll. Really wanted to like this place since the ambiance is so nice and the interior is spacious and clean. Came here twice - ordered almond milk latte (with mushrooms) and a regular almond milk cappuccino. Both tasted horrible...It was my first time (and second time unfortunately) not wanting to take a second sip of my coffee. Couldn't taste the aromatic coffee flavor at all and the almond milk wasn't properly steamed to the frothy texture. It was so bitter (not the good kind of coffee bitterness) and watered down at the same time (how is that even possible...). The WunderEgg Veggie sandwich was not bad; portabello mushroom was seasoned well and super juicy, but the egg was pre-cooked and tasted pretty bland. It was definitely overpriced for the size of the sandwich ($10 for a palm-sized sandwich?!) I'm actually terrified to get coffee from here in the future but might come back to try the other food items on the menu. read more

I recently visited Seattle and had the good fortune to enjoy a delicious lunch at Wunderground. It is a beautiful and welcoming space in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Lots of natural light, generous seating options, and an amazing 3-D art installation too! Don't miss the small but charming outdoor seating area in back, as well. It affords a calming and unique view of the backside of several buildings, which is a whole other intriguing perspective not normally seen otherwise. I ordered the Wunderegg Vegi sandwich which features Portobello mushroom "bacon", a poached egg, cheddar cheese, greens and a delightful aioli sauce on a toothsome brioche from Tallgrass Bakery. It all came together in an absolutely delicious combo of flavors. It hit the spot for me. (Next time, I want to try the cold smoked salmon toast, which looked incredibly tasty too). I also ordered a cup of the mushroom based coffee that Wunderground is known for: I opted for the more mild blend offered, which comes in a yellow bag if you want to take some beans home. It's a refreshing smooth flavor with just the right amount of bite to it. Totally recommend this place for the welcoming bright and colorful vibe, delicious and healthy food options, and of course the mushroom coffee! (And Wishing we had a Wunderground here in Ohio.) read more
