I lived in the Twin Cities for 14 years. In that time I discovered the best bakery with the most amazing white cake with butter cream frosting, Wuollet! For years I held their cake up as the gold standard of all cakes of this type. I would buy it and take it with me out of state and even had my friend send it to me in the mail after I moved. Usually most of the cake survived the journey in tact but even if it got jostled too much and half of it was a pile of rubble, I didn't care because the taste was magnificent and most of the ornate and beautiful roses and flowers survived the trip. Now, forget about buying this cake! I don't have enough words to describe how disappointing even looking at it is. I should have know the moment the cake was picked up. What was once a beautifully decorated masterpiece looked like a grade schooler's art project. Seriously, I felt like I entered the Twilight Zone when I saw it. I specifically ordered a cake decorated like usual and like the one shown on the website. What I got was quite different. The flowers were dark purple and dark blue and orange and red and looked like someone rolled out playdough and then placed on top of the cake with cheesy hard sprinkles throughout. When I tasted the cake I knew immediately something was wrong. The icing was not the usual delectable butter cream taste that I was used to There may still be some butter cream in the mix but it also tasted like Crisco or some type of shortening was added. The consistency of the cake itself is also "off." It's also not as dense as it used to be. The end result is an overpriced, horribly decorated cake that tastes average at best. I gave a piece to my mom who also loves the cake as much as I do and she had similar thoughts as mine. " Meh..." I can get a better looking and better tasting cake at my local grocery store. My advise is to save yourself the disappointment and money and shop elsewhere. When I called the bakery the CSR was very kind and lovely and took good care of me with a refund. She told me that my phone order made no mention of the how I wanted the cake decorated (by the way I mentioned that twice to the person taking my order). As for the taste, well, who would have ever guessed that the new owners would have changed the recipe! If you are a fan of their cakes from yesteryear, look for a new bakery. I can't speak to the retail coffee and pastry end of things or other bakery items, but as far as my prized white cake with butter cream frosting goes, it is an epic failure. read more

(I'm claiming it.) She did not judge. She did not give me the stink-eye. She simply said, "that's really fitting for the occasion." LOL! More about this location: -It's really small, and there are two or three tables for small groups along the window front. -They have your traditional baked goods available like vanilla glazed donuts and Long Johns. -Parking exists all around the building. I can imagine it's almost impenetrable during peak times, though. -You'll have to ask a staff member to use the bathroom, and you'll be guided to the back. About the actual cake itself, I picked up a 16x24 soufflé cake with raspberry filling topped with whipped cream. ($150+) I have to say, it was quite tasty and not cloyingly sweet (which I like). The baked goods are delicious. During October they have the pumpkin cookies that are awesome sauce. I go here weekly and buy 12 of them to snack on... Yum! The icing on the cookies get a big crunchy which is not expected and not melt in your mouth worthy... So I usually pop that off and go for the goods! Come here for the bread and cookies and sometimes a cupcake if your feeling adventurous but don't expect a smiling face to greet you. I am normally met with what feels like someone that doesn't hate their job... But someone that doesn't love it either. I do rate based on food AND service as I find the experience to be as important as the food. Wow, Wuollet's has really gone down the tubes. Their cupcakes were our family's "go to" favorite for over 20 years, and we bought 6 yesterday to celebrate my son's 21st birthday. The cupcakes in years past were consistently delicious, with real butter frosting, the gold standard. Now they've downsized their cupcakes (which in itself isn't horrible, with inflation), but they are using a butter substitute. The cupcakes are dry and the frosting tastes like lard. I have been to bakeries from Vienna to Japan, and I would say this is one of the best bakeries I've been to! I bought fresh bread, an iced latte, and four different pastries and desserts (for 20 bucks!!) and every single item, including the coffee, was absolutely amazing. The Princess Cake is out of this world. The service was also excellent; I like good service. The young man at the counter was fast and diligent and made sure every item arrived at home just as it looked in the store. I bought a Groupon for this staple bakery and it was totally worth it. I didn't spend the entire Groupon in one purchase so they gave me the extra $10 in a gift card to come back another time. Brownie points in my book! Although I didn't spend it all at once the doesn't mean the decisions were easy. They have an assortment of donuts, cupcakes, breads, decadent desserts and just about anything else that a bakery can produce. I am so disappointed in the cupcakes I ordered for my son's wedding rehearsal dinner. I've ordered Woullet's cupcakes (along with other desserts) many times and they have always been showstoppers. I ordered via the phone expecting my usual wonderful bright big cupcakes. These cupcakes were soooo small compared to what they used to be (and still roughly the same cost). I had no idea they changed the amount of batter to using way way way less. I also asked them to only decorate the flowers using their bright colors. I got about a third with the colors I asked for. My showstopping dessert was not to happen. I had to switch the size of my tray to accommodate the huge change in size and couldn't use my beautiful freshly cleaned tarnish free silver tray. People that work here are so kinda and helpful they also have a great Groupon for $19 for $30 worth! Everything looks so good in the cases but 50% of the items were just blah. The good - the carrot cake slices ( expensive are almost $6 each) was amazing and super moist, would definitely get again! The bars , the gooey butter bar is amazing and the seven layer like bar are both decent sized and tasty. The donuts on the other hand were all dry and flavorless- we tried the maple glazed cake donuts, apple fritter, chocolate glazed and the Carmel roll. WOW. Satisfied is an understatement! The kindness of the workers warmed my heart the minute I walked through the doors. Don't even get me started on the Maple Frosted Cake Donut, it is the most delectable pastryI have ever encountered in my many years of life. Very good Donuts, Croissants, Danishes and other simple items that don't taste simple in any way! I must say though that the Apple Fritter did not look worthy. I hate to rate it lower than expected since all the other reviews were wonderful, but my experience was not so much. There was not much for parking, but once we parked we got in and we were excited. It is a cute place with a decent selection of pastries. The pastries/cupcakes range $1.95-$$3.95/ea. The coffee was self-serve, and when the coffee was empty I asked the lady if she could fill it up, she hesitated. She suggested I have a different type (there was decaf and dark roast). I told her I would wait and it was fine. It wasn't busy in there (3 people in line with 3 people behind the counter) and we felt like we were a bother to her. I have been here twice...a good indicator. I have had the cupcakes...fresh a little cold but still moist and $$$cheap compared to other bakeries. I next tried the brownies very moist just the right amount of nuts...but could have been a little bigger... tasty. I also purchased a chocolate chip cookie small but you can buy by the dozen at a decent price. Moist not over chippy very good. They have Danish doughnuts cakes and cookies. We have a long history with Wuollet Bakery. Our first run in was for our wedding, we had cupcakes made for the reception and they were awesome. Over the years we have stopped in for donuts and anniversary cupcakes, always having a great experience. This time we stopped in because we were waiting for a table at next door Red Cow and needed a place to wait, so we headed over to Wuollet. It was a great decision. We bought cupcakes for dessert later and a donut for pre-dinner dessert. Being the week before Valentine's Day most of the pastries were love themed and most importantly, they were delicious. I really don't know what happened. We put in an order for 4 wedding cakes. Two friends went to go pick it up and were only given 2 on our wedding day. This was at 2:30pm. Sure, we could have told our friends that there are 4 cakes, but we never thought Wuollet would only mistakenly give us 2/4 cakes. Weddings are busy and the last thing on our mind is to tell someone specifically that there are 4 cakes. We just needed someone to pick up the cakes. At around 5:00pm our reception started. At 5:30pm we got a call from Wuollet saying that they forgot to give us two cakes. We had another friend get those and he had to pay full price for them. No discount for their mistake but there was an apology. I found that a gap of 3 hours for anyone to realize that we didn't have all the cakes is inexcusable. Should it be my responsibility, on my wedding day, to personally inspect the cakes to see if they were all there? We pay for cakes and cake services so that we can trust that all 4 cakes will be there. Wuollet closes at 6:00pm so our friend had to very much rush down there from our venue in Minneapolis. I think that their products are great. The cake was delicious, don't get me wrong. I think this was a simple mistake on their part, but also could have been avoided if we communicated better to the friends picking up our cakes. I also think if they were more attentive to their customer's orders, this would not have happened. But like I said, I really don't know what happened. I don't know how busy they were that day to forget to give us 2 whole cakes. I don't know their point of sale system or how they handle their orders. Maybe the receipt order for the two cakes fell down somewhere and no one saw it? Why did it take 3 hours for anyone to realize this mistake? Why didn't we, as groom and bride, be more attentive to how many cakes we had? Not sure. I feel really bad giving this review. I feel like this experience deserves a one star, but at the same time, I feel like this was just a really bad one time mistake. Service goes such a long way ... I was stranded here one time while taking the bus home when our bus had an accident (long story). It was cold so I went in here to wait for the husband to pick me up. The people in here were so nice to me - offering me samples, tea, and coffee while I was waiting. I bought some iced hot cross buns with raisins (yum!) and some coconut macaroons. The macaroons were pricey, but they were really big. They were also sweet and rich - even my son, the sugar fiend, couldn't finish a whole one in one sitting. Cake tasting can be a surprisingly awkward experience except when you have an appointment at Wuollet. Catherine was awesome! We were greeted on arrival and gotten a cup of great coffee and then were sat down and asked what we were looking for. Catherine had a sheet prepared full of different options we could taste. She left us alone so we could mull it over ourselves (which I loved.) You have the option of getting every tier a different flavor. My man and I have very different tastes so this is a huge plus for us. We made our decisions and she had the cakes brought out on a silver platter for our tasting pleasure. Once again, she left us on our own which was SO appreciated. Then, if we didn't like one we wouldn't have to worry about minding our manners. We loved all of the options we tried and the cakes were moist and the frosting was decadent yet not overly rich. She went over our budget with us and gave us many different options so we could spend what we wanted. I loved Wuollet, the service was outstanding as well as the cake, I had to leave with a brownie which, of course, turned out to be perfection. read more

A well loved establishment in the twin cities does consistent, simple, and tasty cakes, cookies, pastries, and treats. Love the princess cake with marzipan, raspberry, and cream; it's an almond lovers dream! With all the other bakery options in town, i find Wuollet on the too sweet side, so it's hard to be a repeat customer. Woullet doesn't make tough cookies, but it's trying to be one by slashing prices through groupon and other coupon websites. I finally got around to trying out the OTHER Wuollet Bakery, the original one it would seem. I found it to be a better overall experience than the Wuollet in Uptown. The employees friendlier, parking, with awesome free samples to be had everywhere. I love the donuts they have, but they aren't quite as exciting as ones you will find at Mojo Monkey in St Paul or YoYo Donuts in Minnetonka. The cupcakes are pretty fantastic though. This place is a solid bakery. Not the greatest one in the world, and by no means the worst. I definitely recommend it if you are in the area. read more

Wuollet was the fourth stop on the great cake tasting for my sister's wedding 2012, and I have to say, it wasn't very good at all. It was axed I think while we were still at the tasting table - we didn't even have to say it, we just knew. Everything tasted like something I could make at home, except I'm a good baker, so I think mine would be better. The frosting is ULTRA super sweet - to the point where that's really all you can taste. The cake is all only mildly flavored... like someone used a crappy box mix but to save money, replaced half of it with plain flour. Diluted cake flavor is not my favorite. You can't cover it with super sweet frosting. No, no you can't. Sidenote: the cheesecake was VERY good. Strange that it was so much better than the others, but it didn't have any frosting on it, so there you go. Also: their pastries looked amazing - I was drooling over them pretty much the entire tasting, staring sadly over my shoulder at the bakery case while regrettably shoving icky cake into my mouth against my will. I would go back and try some of those before writing off Wuollet completely. And one final note, the cake tasting girl was super nice. Absolutely nothing wrong with the staff - just bad cake. There is this deli in Des Moines, Iowa and they bake a fresh German Chocolate cake from the recipe on German's Chocolate packaging. Amazing. Also a great white cake with coconut frosting. A chocolate with chocolate frosting. The cakes are awesome. Never frozen or refrigerated. People know they make these cakes and buy them up before they go stale. Wuollet Bakery takes cup cakes, 100 of them, out of the freezer and puts a basic non exciting icing on them and places them in a dingy refrigerated case. Along with some cookies that are probably made fresh some time in the last two months and some donuts that are ok. What a waste of some retail space and what appears to be a good name in Minneapolis. The store is gross and lazy. Build it and they will come. Bake fresh and sell fresh and they will come buy. Palmers in Des Moines does not even specialize in cakes, far from it. Wuollet is a bakery. They want foot traffic. They have failed. I would not suggest going here. read more

I ordered a birthday cake for my wife's 60th surprise birthday party. Such things are normally my wife's department, but I obviously couldn't ask her for help. I really didn't know where to start, but the friendly young man at Wuollet Bakery walked me through the process. When we were nearly done, he asked me, "Would you like us to put anything else on the cake." I sheepishly said, "Well yes, can you put an oboe on the cake?" My wife plays the oboe. The kind young man said, "Let me check." He returned a minute or two later to tell me that yes, they could do an oboe. But I had to verify, "Do you know what an oboe is? It must be an oboe, not a clarinet!" I picked up the cake a few days later. It had a perfect image of an oboe on it. And the rest of the cake was a work of art, too. It was a huge hit at the party! For starters, I grew up LOVING Wuollet's. We would make the pilgrimage across town to get the coveted birthday cakes and were never disappointed. This last month, however, has turned me off of them completely. I am getting married in March and have been looking for a bakery for a cake. Who better than Wuollet's, right? They have reputation, they have taste, and (truth be told) they have pretty decent prices. I'm not picky, or high maintenance, just really excited about quality cake. I emailed over a month ago to set up an appointment and ask some questions. Nothing. No reply. Three weeks ago, I called and left my name and number. Nothing. No reply. Two weeks ago, I went into the store to buy some cupcakes for "sampling" purposes. And, because they are Wuollets cupcakes! I left my name and number there--at the correct wedding location, I might add. Nothing! No Reply! Last week, I called at 2pm (don't worry this is important) and the lady working tells me I need to call back between 7am-3pm. When I tell her that I am within that time frame, she puts me on hold and then comes back saying the wedding coordinator will need my name and number. Not to be deterred, I email again. Nothing! Still NO REPLY! Game Over Wuollet's. Your cupcakes now taste of disdain and bad customer service. ---- On a side note, I did find a GREAT bakery with better flavor, options, prices and customer service. Prior to my wedding reception, I'd tried Wuollet (namely the St. Paul location) both for my high school graduation cupcakes and then various cookie and small-scale dessert needs since. So, it makes sense that when we began thinking about cake options for the reception, we decided to check out Wuollet. I need to preface this saying I do not have a giant sweet tooth. I am more of a salt girl and while my maid of honor practically BEGGED me to invite her to cake tastings so she could eat cake, I picked at the selections and mostly deferred to the group. However, Wuollet was a great way to go as they do offer you a complimentary cake tasting if you're planning an event such as a wedding, they will accommodate your tastes/preferences (including my need for dairy-free options), and they will work with you to recommend designs/styles. They were able to recreate my design requests (admittedly from photos I saw on Pinterest) beautifully! Seriously, when the cake deliverer brought in the cakes and took them out of their boxes, I started weeping. Granted, it had already been a long day and wedding planning is stressful, but it was so exciting to see the amazing job they did! The cons: -Very. very. very. sweet. Like I said, I am more of a salt girl - or at the very least, I like TART or FLORAL or something a bit unique to balance out the sugar. Granted, I was limited somewhat with my dairy-free preferences, but even the dairy options my husband tasted were quite sugary as well. That being said, people seemed to love it and many had seconds (or thirds). Which brings me to my only other con... -We got WAY too much cake. Now, I'm not sure if this is a common practice or if this was somehow our fault, but we gave them the approximate number of guests and they gave us the recommendation for how much cake to purchase. Most guests had cake and MANY had seconds or thirds. We still came home with almost the entire tiered cake and easily the equivalent of 1 whole sheet cake (likely more) between the two. I'm not sure if they expected us to cut much larger pieces or something, but it was a LOT of cake. I fed my coworkers leftover cake for an entire week after and still had to throw some away in addition to freezing some. I know, who complains about too much cake?! But my mom paid for it PLUS I hate being wasteful - so be mindful of the reality of how much cake you'll actually need versus how many servings you order.
