Fries are classic krinkle and piping hot,wrapped in a wax paper bag. Eat them first with a lot of the cinnamon flavored sauce, which is unique and very good. The sandwich is chopped brisket on white bread, tastes great, especially with the sauce. Ribs are also good. This is real barbeque folks. A lot of the reviews for Wyandot mention rude and outright hateful behavior, but I didn't experience anything like that. So, I'm not sure if some of these reports were overblown, or maybe those bad actors don't work there anymore? Unknown, but I can say that my experience with the employees and other customers was extremely pleasant. The food however was a bit of a hit and a miss. I tried the burnt ends and they were extremely dry and chewy and I don't see myself ever eating them again. However, the staff also recommended the beef sandwich...that was a different story. I put a decent amount of BBQ sauce on my sandwich, but I greatly enjoyed it. So, as with many BBQ spots, I think your experience with the food is HEAVILY dependent on what you order since nobody does everything perfect. What I can say with confidence is that Wyandot BBQ does NOT deserve a rating as low as they currently have on Yelp. Is the BBQ amazing? No. But it's also not half bad if you order the right thing. Being the Bbq snob that I am. I had little expectations for the restaurant. The counter cashier was great. I wanted a combo of pork ribs and burnt ends. This was not available. Sad. I got the burnt end dinner with beans and fries. The dinner came with two small bottles for ketchup and Bbq sauce. That was nice. The fries were hot and crispy. They had no flavor. The beans were Bush's baked beans with green pepper, onion, and little pieces of ham added. Not too good. However, the Bbq sauce was spicy and flavorful. Very good. The burnt ends were smoky with a lot of juicy fat. I was surprised by the tasty beefy goodness. The ambiance of the restaurant is ok. This one does not get recognition in this Bbq competitive town. I really don't feel like they deserve all the bad reviews. Is the bbq the best in KC? No. Is it the worst bbq in KC? No. Is it the very definition of fast food bbq? Yes. This was my first experience with this location. Prior to its closure I always went to the Shawnee location but this one is also close to me. They have their own parking lot so there's no issue finding parking. They also took down the signs that several people called out. The space isn't super big and I could see it getting crowded easily. The floor looks newer. Could the ceiling be improved? Yes, but keep in mind that this is a divey type joint. It's not overly dirty but it's not spotless either. If you're looking for white table cloths and fancy pants "ambience" go elsewhere cause you're not gonna have a good time. I generally take my food to go and that would be my recommendation. My go to is the combo sandwich with beef and ham. I swap out the white bread for a bun. The sandwiches are always large. The beef is chopped, the ham Smokey, and the sauce tangy with hints of cinnamon. The crinkle cut fries are always a winner and I love to add on an entire pickle. A lot of people hate on Wyandote. And I can kinda see why. They are a fast bbq option without any frills. They are the option that I choose when I want a sandwich with quantity but at a lower price point. You can get two sandwiches with sides for the cost of hitting up a chain drive through but end up with more food and supporting a local business. It's not a place I would take an out of tower or a place that I would order ribs from. You def need to keep your expectations in check. Came here with a friend from out of town, he was looking to try KC bbq spots. While the property isn't esthetically pleasing (his words were "this place is awesome, it's so grungy!") you can get a decent meal. I had the turkey sandwich and he got a pound of beef. The meat was fine, no complaints. The sauce was decent, had a small kick to it that we both liked. He thought, considering the price, he preferred it to the other bbq places he had tried. The place looked fairly clean, I didn't inspect it or anything, and didn't use the bathroom. The employees weren't super friendly. Well, unless you were a regular apparently. But we only briefly interacted with them anyways, so no big deal. If you're looking for cheap bbq that isn't horrible, you'll find it here. read more

Wyandot BBQ is the kind of old school joint that you want to root for, but even they know the score when the first sign you see on the door states something to the effect of - We don't guarantee that you will like our food - so NO refunds given. It can't be all bad, right? After all when you walk in the door you can plainly see the large glass wall cabinet housing all of their trophies, plaques, ribbons...but upon closer look you see that they are 30 years old and they are not BBQ competition awards; they are from dog shows! Apparently the owners were dog breeders - nice! My wait was a bit long for only 4 people in line in front of me, but with large carry-out orders and only 1 lady working the front end it was a good 15 minute wait. Hats off to the grizzled veteran waitress; in no way was she part of the problem as she juggled orders, cash register, phones, bar seating and running back to the kitchen repeatedly to expedite or complete orders. My $15 Mixed plate came with 3 bones, a pile of sliced beef, sliced ham, fries and 2 slices of white bread covering a sauce drenched plate. A lot of food for the price! My first bite was from a rib end - tough, chewy, fatty, and eventually a chewed glob of meat left in a napkin after a couple of minutes of chewing and wearing out my jaw muscles. Beef - stringy and fatty. Ham - no complaints. Fries - crinkle cut perfection. Sauce - a nice sweet heat kick. Wyandot has been around for many decades serving the blue-collar crowd in the area value priced BBQ, but for me their glory days; just like the upkeep of their building - is far away in the rear-view mirror. read more

I am a foodie. My mother went to Wyandot BBQ at 8441 State Avenue Kansas City Kansas 66112 (913)788-7554 on August 20, 2024. She ordered a slab of ribs, french fries and coleslaw. It cost her $34 and some change for the meal. She gets home and her ribs are burnt!!! She goes back to Wyandot BBQ the man touches her food to inspect it and said, nothing is wrong with it. My mother said I don't want that after you put your hands on it. The man proceeds to throw away her food and told her goodbye. He didn't refund her money nor did he offer her another slab of ribs, fries and coleslaw. We cannot tolerate restaurants treating elderly people disrespectful like this!!! Also, the staff had masks and gloves on which was a plus. The business floor,tables and food prep area appeared very clean. This is truly a dive. In all sense of the word. It has all of the means to be a great barbecue joint but falls short in a few places. You can tell this place has been smoking meat for a long time by the old-fashioned look on the outside of the building. It's very plain and looks like a dive, which in my opinion, is how good barbecue joints should look. Put all of your effort into the meat! As I entered the building, I noticed a bunch of homemade typed signs covering the doors. This honestly just made me more excited for the barbecue. It reminded me of Mad Jack's on Troost with all of their obnoxious signs. It's a bit cramped inside. I couldn't quite walk between the tables and booths without some maneuvering of my body. I'm an average size person. Note: Be careful when walking because the floor is super slick with grease. My Show Me Your KC group was meeting to try out the barbecue so we sat in the back room which had ample space for us. It was a bit warm in the building and there were more than a few flies buzzing around. Everyone eventually arrived so we mosied our way to the front counter to order our food. The young cashier pointed to my group of 10 and asked me if this was all on my ticket. I may have laughed a little too hard when I said I was only paying for myself. The mixed meat platter was recommended to me so I ordered that and a can of Miller Lite, all for $15. You can't beat that. This is where it got a bit funny. After telling her my order, she asked me if I was on someone else's ticket. I told her again that it was just me and started to walk away (you pay after you get your food). She then asked me again if I was on my own ticket. I laughed and said, "I'm paying for myself!" THEN SHE ASKED ME A FOURTH TIME. So I obnoxiously said, "I'm an independent woman! I pay for my own food!" The cashier paused. Then I said, "WILL SOMEBODY PAY FOR ME SO I CAN GET MY DAMN FOOD?" I walked away to get my water. A minute later my order was called out so I grabbed my cash and stood in front of the cashier. She asked me a 5th time if I was still on my own ticket..."It's still just you?" Y'all, I'm in my 30's and I most definitely look like I'm in my 30's. I don't know why she was so opposed to me paying for myself, but it got weird real quick. I looked at the woman standing behind her staring at me and asked if I could pay for my food and she nudged the cashier to take my cash that I was desperately trying to hand her. Weird. Onto the food - it was alright. The ham was moist and smokey. The crinkle cut fries were OK (crinkle cut fries will never be good in my book). The ribs were tender and messy as they should be. The meat comes with the sauce on it already. I usually like my barbecue dry, but I was so boggled by the cashier that I forgot to ask her to hold the sauce. The barbecue sauce was a delight! It was sweet-tasting but then had this nice burn in the end. Some people said they thought the sauce was too spicy, but I disagree. Perfect. The brisket was underneath the ribs and was just terrible. Very dry and greasy. It wouldn't hold its form and fell apart into tiny pieces. No smoke flavor at all. I really wanted the brisket to be good. The mixed meat platter had a lot of food and was a good value for the money (minus the brisket). Show Me Your KC members really liked the burnt ends and coleslaw. Someone said the coleslaw was similar to KFC - the right amount of mayo and vinegar. Between the sad brisket, crinkle cut fries, weird cashier, slick floors and abundant flies, I have to give Wyandot Barbecue only 3 stars. It has all of the makings to be a good barbecue dive but falls short on smoke execution. First thing... there was no 'Ambiance'. The place was an average sized building with tables and chairs. You had to trip over seating that made it rough to even get a soda dispensed out of the machine. The service was taken care of by a young lady that did an excellent job of getting us our dinner out. The food... I left it on the table for friends to take home if they wanted it. I did not. I would not have taken it home to punish the dog... had a rib plate and the ribs were over cooked, dry and I've never seen ribs that were worse appearing in presentation. Throwing a partial slab of ribs on top of some fries, beans and coleslaw and calling it a meal was ugly at best. The beans were old and over cooked, the fries were 'crusty' to say the least, and can't comment on the coleslaw as I don't do coleslaw. At first glance, one might assume that these are barbecue competition trophies. After you sit down and look more closely however, it becomes clear that they are dog show trophies. This is a well-established local joint. Not a fancy restaurant but the food was tasty and quite affordable. We stopped by on a Sunday afternoon, they were very short staffed, but the girl taking orders and Manning the cash register was very pleasant. She apologized to everyone putting their order in and made them aware of the situation. At times when she could she went back to help in the kitchen. Despite the fact that they were short-stepped they were very efficient in getting our order ready for us. Really enjoyed the food, I have the burnt ends, and they were very good. We've been going to Wyandotte Q since the early 80's. Love love love the sauce, the food is passable enough to scratch the itch if Q is what you're craving. What knocks this place down is the service or lack thereof. Service is given grudgingly, like they're doing you a favor letting you come in, attitude of the counter help especially the one lady, she knows who she is, is borderline rude. The fries are standard crinkle cut, when they're done extra crispy, nothing better, especially dipped in that fabulous sauce, but guess what, they refuse to cook them that way. No reason given just a flat refusal. So we took the family in, daughter visiting wanted to go to the NUMBER ONE FRY PLACE (which is what the kiddos always called Wyandotte BBQ) we spend almost $100 on lunch - but they refuse to cook fries an extra 30 seconds???? And trust me, if you sit and listen, people love those fries extra crispy and all they get is "we don't do fries crispy". It's just very disappointing, and we find ourselves going there less and less. Too many other quality Q places in KC area that appreciate business and treat customers like they matter. read more
