Delicious Soup!! When I went, there were out of Beef Bone Soup which sucked because that was the one I wanted to try the most. I ended up getting the Sukiyaki Soup, and I found it super flavorful and very good! There's a lot of selection for what to put in your bowl, there's a good selection of meats, noodles, vegetables, and sides. The sauce bar has a good selection of sauces and oils. The most popular meats are frozen so you kind of have to fight with the frozen meat to get it into your bowl. You have to get 1 lb. of food, they weigh it before you pay. You can't get any less than 1 lb. The restaurant was very clean, and it wasn't super full. It was easy to find seating, and it wasn't full for a random Saturday. The employees are very nice and helpful. He informed us that we had to get at least 1 lb. of food in our bowl, he told us which soups are spicy and which are not, and he brought water to our table. First, I love the tom yum soup flavor here!! Discovered this place when it first opened and I've been going a handful of times since. I would have rated it a 5 star but they started removing some fan favorite toppings such as the cheese balls and tofu/egg stuff (not sure what it's called lol). Please bring it back :,). My favorite malatang spot in Garden Grove! Had to go with the beef bone broth and medium spice as always. For my sauce I went with 1/2 vinegar, 1/2 soy sauce and a scoop of garlic, cilantro, and green onion. For toppings my favorite are the sausage, tofu skin, wood ear mushrooms, and the pork blood. Came to visit friends in Garden Grove and found this great malatang place with a self-service bar and affordable prices! We went there for their soft opening so they gave us a 12% discount and free soft drink (coca cola or sprite)! The base price is only $14.99/lb, and even lower after the discount. We were required to purchase a minimum of 1 pound, but that's usually easy to hit and would be a large enough portion for one person. Not too many options so the choices aren't overwhelming, perfect if you're craving malatang. My favorite items were the thinly sliced beef, thinly sliced lamb, quail eggs, and fish tofu. Okay, the hubby and I have been back 6 times since we first went two weeks ago. And I don't know if it's our hyper fixation, BUT this place is delish for what it is. Now there are tons of other malatang spots popping up all over OC, mainly in the Irvine area and keep an open mind when dining here. Protein is plenty in the form of balls, the sliced shabu style meat is towards the end near the register so don't pile on too much of the processed balls. Veggies/seafood options are good, but if you come later in the evening they may run out and will not refill. I've left cabbage-less and my bowl just wasn't the same. I had the spicy dry mix , it looked nothing like the photo, i should had find it odd when they didnt ask how spicy i wanted. This is the first malatang place that I know of in Westminster/Garden Grove so location is a big plus for me. The plaza is generally pretty busy but there's plenty of parking. Service was quick and I like this place is also open pretty late. Starting off by saying the food was pretty good. I was feeling soupy and this definitely hit the spot with its garlicky spicy goodness. The lack of stars is due to the customer service or lackthereof. Came in during a slow time on a Monday night. The place was being manned by a long-haired guy. I will say, I walked in during his meal, and felt bad about interrupting his dinner. I walked up to the register as this was a new experience for me. He asked if it was my first time. I say yes. He points to the sauce station with the bowls and says something along the lines of "go get your food". Okay...it's easy enough to figure it out, grab a bowl and a pair of tongs and go to town on the ingredients bar. Again, the food itself was pretty good (Beef broth Mild is decently spicy) with good flavor. My biggest issue lies in their system for side sauce containers and dude's demeanor. I grabbed the larger container to make my side dipping sauce. When it came time to take my leftovers to go, I got up and asked the guy for a lid. He responds with "Huh!?". "Can I have a lid, please?" He handed me a lid for my soup. I then asked for a lid for my dipping sauce container. He points to the container rack and goes "No lid, only small cups have lids". I noticed a stack of lids next to the stack of container lids that he handed me and asked if I could use one of those? He then scoffs and holds up a deli container and says "this lid is for this, not that!" As if what I asked was so ridiculous. Anyways, I understand not having lids for the bigger container readily available to deter to-go folks from wasting product, but how about reserving lids for dine-in customers? If I've already filled the container, I have to now pour it into multiple smaller cups or toss the rest? Seems counterintuitive. We also did not realized that the sliced beef and sliced lamb were at the end of the bar so we ended up adding more meat that we didn't really want to get in protein. The ingredients here are poor quality and the customer service is abysmal. While selecting the ingredients for my bowl, I noticed that most of the spinach was old and wilting. The thin sliced beef was also 75% fat. I'm assuming it was beef belly, but I've never seen beef belly with a millimeter of actual meat. The customer service here was the nail in the coffin for me. My dad wanted to get some thin sliced lamb and noticed that there were only 5 pieces left in the tray to choose from. When he asked one of the workers to replenish the meat (there was another tray directly underneath the current one), he was told that the meat could not be replaced unless he took the remaining 5 pieces of lamb. My dad responded that he did not want the remaining lamb available because it was mostly fat, and the worker continued to state he could not change out the tray. I'm not quite sure why the worker couldn't just take the five pieces left and put them in the new tray. When we got to the cashier, I was told that my bowl had to be a minimum of 1 lb, which is standard for a malatang restaurant, but that was not listed anywhere. If you are allergic to peanuts or don't like to eat plastic, stay away. My friends and I were eating at this restaurant and we found pieces of plastic (looked like part of a label) in two separate bowls. When we alerted the staff, the only thing that they said to us was, "So what do you want to do about this?" My friends and I were just lost for words to respond. I told them that we just wanted to let them know and I was hoping to would care to say sorry or anything. He just walked away after that. Additionally, one of my friends found a piece of noodle in his bowl that he did not put in which tells me that they don't do a good job of ensuring that there are no risks of cross contamination (even though my friend specifically alerted staff that he has a peanut allergy and needs to avoid any cross contamination). I got the tom yum broth and it was delicious especially for seafood. I wasn't sure what all the items were but tried some new things and it was all delicious. My friend got a dry noodle dish which was also great. And there was a sauce station to add a variety of sauces on the side where could mix your perfect combination. Definitely going back and getting the tom yum again. The soup came out quick and was served in a to go container so that was handy so you didn't have to pour the soup into a to go container. When my mom tried to add noodles to her bowl, he said it was too late because they were already cooking, even though we hadn't paid yet. At checkout, he rushed through the transaction. I mentioned I had a phone number and a free pound, which caused him to roll his eyes and redo the transaction. When the promotion didn't apply, I tried explaining that a previous cashier told me I could redeem a free pound on my next visit for signing up. If the promotion genuinely could not be applied, that would have been fine, but it could have been communicated calmly and professionally without the condescending tone or attitude.
