It was a great experience when I dined in on Thursday night at around 7. The server / cashier name was Phuoc and he was very friendly and helped us with all the service, guiding us where to get the noodles. It was such a calm vibe and we were not being rushed like other locations. There were a lot of options for veggies and meat , there were some options for clams, scalop as well which I havent seen before at other malatang. My broth was beef broth, it was a little oily, but the flavor was on point, my cousin got Tom-yum and the flavor remind me of the tomyum flavored noodle we had in Vietnam. Hands down one of the worst experiences at a restaurant. Granted, we did come in an hour before closing time. But in all honesty, we let the staff know that we would be having a large party, about 15 people or so. The restaurant was a little full at the time of arrival with not many tables available. However, after checking in with the cashier, he said it was fine and that we would be able to dine if we waited for the tables to open up. After the tables opened up, we came in and started to go through the ordering process. Only after the first few of us collected all of our ingredients, he told us there was only enough broth for 4-5 people to eat and told us that the rest of the party could only do the spicy dry mix. Even so, when the first few of us were ready to pay for our bowls and were trying to select a broth, he ended up saying that there was actually NO broth at all and that suddenly now all of us were only allowed to order spicy dry mix. So he lied when he said they had broth for 4-5 people because nobody got any broth at all. We tried to just cancel the whole order because our party couldn't all eat. The cashier told us we couldn't cancel after adding the raw meat into our bowls. I didn't think this was fair because we were completely transparent and informed the staff of our large party and he told us we could be accommodated. So some of us were forced to pay and select the spicy dry mix. After receiving the bowls, we looked at the orders and they were very sloppily put together. The food was overly salty and the ingredients were cold and not cooked thoroughly. So not only did we have to buy the food that we weren't happy with because there was "no broth" available. We also didn't even receive a properly prepared meal. One of the bowls also had a cut of wire brush in it. And I personally felt kind of sick after trying to eat the food. It felt wasteful because it was not even properly cooked. I ultimately didn't have a good time here because our group was coming here to eat together and because of the lack of transparency on the staff side of this transaction, some of us were forced to pay for food we didn't want and then the rest had to find another place to eat. Delicious Soup!! When I went, there were out of Beef Bone Soup which sucked because that was the one I wanted to try the most. I ended up getting the Sukiyaki Soup, and I found it super flavorful and very good! The most popular meats are frozen so you kind of have to fight with the frozen meat to get it into your bowl. You have to get 1 lb. of food, they weigh it before you pay. You can't get any less than 1 lb. The restaurant was very clean, and it wasn't super full. It was easy to find seating, and it wasn't full for a random Saturday. The employees are very nice and helpful. He informed us that we had to get at least 1 lb. of food in our bowl, he told us which soups are spicy and which are not, and he brought water to our table. I got the bone broth with the spiciest level, and I didn't realize that meant that half the bowl would be chili oil. The oil itself wasn't that spicy. Finally got to try this spot and I really liked it. I've read some reviews about it being a little messy during busy hours, but it was very well kept when we came today. The broth is seasoned perfectly and I rarely had to dip my food in the sauce. I like that the spice level is an accurate point. Came to visit friends in Garden Grove and found this great malatang place with a self-service bar and affordable prices! We went there for their soft opening so they gave us a 12% discount and free soft drink (coca cola or sprite)! The base price is only $14.99/lb, and even lower after the discount. We were required to purchase a minimum of 1 pound, but that's usually easy to hit and would be a large enough portion for one person. Not too many options so the choices aren't overwhelming, perfect if you're craving malatang. My favorite items were the thinly sliced beef, thinly sliced lamb, quail eggs, and fish tofu. Starting off by saying the food was pretty good. I was feeling soupy and this definitely hit the spot with its garlicky spicy goodness. The lack of stars is due to the customer service or lackthereof. Came in during a slow time on a Monday night. The place was being manned by a long-haired guy. I will say, I walked in during his meal, and felt bad about interrupting his dinner. I walked up to the register as this was a new experience for me. He asked if it was my first time. I say yes. He points to the sauce station with the bowls and says something along the lines of "go get your food". Okay...it's easy enough to figure it out, grab a bowl and a pair of tongs and go to town on the ingredients bar. Again, the food itself was pretty good (Beef broth Mild is decently spicy) with good flavor. My biggest issue lies in their system for side sauce containers and dude's demeanor. I grabbed the larger container to make my side dipping sauce. When it came time to take my leftovers to go, I got up and asked the guy for a lid. He responds with "Huh!?". "Can I have a lid, please?" He handed me a lid for my soup. I then asked for a lid for my dipping sauce container. He points to the container rack and goes "No lid, only small cups have lids". I noticed a stack of lids next to the stack of container lids that he handed me and asked if I could use one of those? He then scoffs and holds up a deli container and says "this lid is for this, not that!" As if what I asked was so ridiculous. Anyways, I understand not having lids for the bigger container readily available to deter to-go folks from wasting product, but how about reserving lids for dine-in customers? If I've already filled the container, I have to now pour it into multiple smaller cups or toss the rest? Seems counterintuitive. To be honest, this place has a lot of room for improvement, and it would be good if it could improve because all of the other Malatang hot pot places are farther away. The broths we got were very rich, and I will probably be back for that. However, as compared to other Malatang hot pot places, the selection here was not very appealing.
