There are SO many dim sum places in OC to choose from but I heard this place changed ownership/name(?) and I wanted to try it out so I took my mom here. There wasn't anyone eating there when we went on a weekday morning so service was super quick! It's a huge space though so I'm sure it gets more rowdy on the weekends. We tried the classic dim sum dishes. The shumai was a bit dry for me but was still overall pretty good. The rice rolls with shrimp had a very good sauce and it was super addicting! The only one that disappointed us were the soup dumplings, which fell apart because they stuck to the bottom. Also there just wasn't very much soup in them to begin with. Both of our favs were the baby ribs, which were so soft and flavorful. The fried shrimp balls were also good and were made to order so they were super crispy and fresh! I really liked the chili oil here because it actually had a kick. For dessert, we ended off with their egg tarts that were crispy, sweet, and delicious!! I'd definitely come back because this is a lot better experience compared to waiting hours for some of the places in OC. read more

So the service here is still pretty atrocious in my opinion. So I don't really come in anymore. Maybe it's because I grew up with it and I'm in love with their dim sum. But their food is still great most of the time. I now just get to go and eat at home or eat somewhere else so I don't have to deal with their service. I like the new update and the modern look of the restaurant but I feel that it's taking away. It's warmth. It feels a little more clinic-y if that makes sense. I'll probably update again if anything changes or if a family member is dying to go here. I just get really upset thinking about how I have two aunts in my last example that we've gone ands server. Who's been there for ages treats you different based on I guess your tipping and to me that's a put off. He is also very crass, and his jokes are kind of gross. The owner does try and go around. But the last time I've gone, she kinda just sat there. My last experience while in the restaurant was that there were maybe four or five tables of people about 2 to 4 in each table. And this was after dim sum time so there are no carts going around. And even though their staff was pretty full service was so slow. The food was kind of extra greasy and it gave a lot of us. Bad stomach aches. I still debate how bad I want dim sum when I have to go here. But at least their dim sum is still great! Went there for lunch and saw the dimsum cart. They were very persistent and pushy in having us order a bunch although we insisted we try some out first. Good thing we did because they were all pretty bad. All were hard to chew probably because they've been steaming for hours and hours. Another spot my mom and I like to hit up whenever I'm back in town. I think the service could use some work but the food was decent for what we paid for. And there's little to no wait because this place is huge! We got the staple dim sum dishes such as shumai, hargow, chicken feet, bean curd rolls, cai lan (Chinese broccoli), tripe, and shrimp rice noodle rolls. All were good for dim sum standards. NOT sure why they only have 3 stars, but... let's fix that! Happy that I chose this restaurant for a 40 person birthday party last Saturday. Denny helped me coordinate the event and I selected the food based on photos from Yelp. Decided on a variety so that anyone with limitations would also be accommodated. One chicken, beef, shrimp, noodle, pork, fried rice, Chinese broccoli and seafood soup. Everything was delicious and I can honestly say the Chinese broccoli was cooked perfectly and the best I've ever had. The sauce was just right and not too thick or thin. This also goes for the Honey Walnut Shrimp, which was also the best I've ever had and not to overly sauced with mayo. It was perfection! Denny was able to work within my budget and we had enough food and variety at each table. We were able to comfortably enjoy our meal and all the food came out timely and spaced out so we could enjoy every entree while it was still nice and warm. We were able to bring our own cake for the birthday and used a back table to serve our own dessert. All the servers were nice and attentive. Note they do also serve Dim Sum here from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. DAILY, so we'll definitely be back to try as this is one restaurant that still serves dim sum on carts, a dying bread, unfortunately. read more

We came here for lunch on a Tuesday. I noticed there was only one other table that had 3 people sitting, the rest of the restaurant was empty even at 12noon. We had a big group and the staff kept serving us dishes that we didn't ask for and basically gave us no option to say no since they already placed them on our table. They have very limited selection on weekdays, I think some of it were leftovers from the weekend. They gave us multiple dishes of the same things, mostly shrimp dishes. Sadly, the food was not impressive. Some tasted old, some smelled re-fried. When they gave us our bill, they automatically put the gratuity for the group. You should not come expecting a Din Tai Fung or Michelin star experience so I think a lot of reviews are a bit unfair if that's the standard of comparison. It's a bright and clean spot with fast service and gives you exactly what you need on a morning you're craving some cheap dim sum. The staff seems to be the same since I was a kid. [TL;DR] Questionable shrimp har gao & siu mais, mid-quality dishes, and extremely pushy service experience. No wait time on a Saturday at 11am (a bad sign), carts come swarming to your table even before you're seated (another bad sign), and servers bring random dishes to you and solicit you to take the dish (but why??) This wasn't my pick to eat here so I didn't read or check any reviews before coming here, but it definitely felt strange with zero wait here on a weekend for dim sum. I gave it benefit of the doubt to determine the quality until I tried the food, but the experience started off strange when I noticed carts were literally racing to get to our table and get us to order things before I even sat down. We saw this happen again and again each time others entered the restaurant and were in the act of getting situated. Maybe you call that quick customer service, I call it overwhelming with them trying to make you rush a decision on what to order before you can even think. Almost like stimulation overload while your guard is down and end up ordering things you might not even want to eat just yet... All these dishes (see picture) got placed onto our table within 2 mins of sitting down, which is a lot considering I haven't even tried anything yet so I figured let's see how good it is before we order more. Here's the ranking for each dim sum dish we got from good to bad... 1) Bean curd wrapped roll -- 3/5, decent flavor and texture. 2) Turnip cake with fried egg -- 2.5/5, lacking a little bit of flavor and no crisp to the cake so it makes me think that they cooked this a while ago and it got soft. Luckily the spicy chili oil helped give it some taste which it slightly lacked. 3) Pork spare rib with black bean -- 2/5, flavor only comes from the fat of the pork pieces with chunks of fat that you could see on each piece. The fat was so chunky in some bites that I could easily separate and spit it out. 4) Crab and Shrimp Ball -- 2/5, first bite was misleadingly good with the crispy fried outside, because afterwards, the taste just got kinda bland. Luckily the sweet and sour sauce saves this dish a bit. Crab pieces inside was flavorless and dry. 5) Shrimp Har Gao -- 1/5, the skin was so thick and starchy, shrimp tasted a little funky, so these were probably frozen / definitely not fresh. Even after removing the outside dumpling wrapper, eating the shrimp by itself was off-putting. 6) Shrimp Siu Mai -- 0/5, even funkier taste than the Har Gao. For some reason it has a lot of peas and that's really all I taste. Not that I dislike peas, but the peas were mushy and not fresh either. Needless to say, we didn't order anything else even though they kept offering other dishes since these were mostly questionable at best. The food wasn't cheap either... all this for $50+ and not good quality. Only positive things about here are the open space of it and not having to wait for food. Lots of dining tables with this giant screen and stage area which probably makes for a spacious event venue. Definitely never coming back. read more

It's not my first rodeo so we got the tried and true classics. Ha gao, siu mai, cheong fun, and ham sui gok, to name a few! and if you don't know the Cantonese names, that's okay too. They speak Vietnamese, Cantonese, and English. and they'll explain to you that that's shrimp dumplings, pork wontons, rice rolls, and footballs. yeah I said footballs. try it, it's my favorite! we got so much more stuff, but that's the beauty of it here; let your eyes do the ordering. All of our food came out so quick. Those carts are just hot steamers that keep the food warm and prepped at a moment's notice. Even for the stuff that's not in the carts, the service is schnappy! Attention all dippers! Rejoice! They got soy sauce and chili oil on the table, but you should also ask for some hot mustard and sriracha! Mix it up how you'd like, and just dip away! The shiu mai were bland, the har gao were hard and dry and flavorless, the breading outside on the bao was bland and starchy with the interior being relatively flavorless, and the seen jook gun were hard and bland. We were seated at a table that didn't even have enough plates, cups and chopsticks for our group of 3. We started ordering but there was a language barrier when we asked questions about the filling of the bun. We ordered congee and asked for extra bowls but they didn't give us spoons, when we clearly wanted to share it. Overall, the food was just ok. It did not hit the mark for us. We came here for a family dinner on a Sunday around 2 PM. they sat us right away and immediately started bringing plates of food over the second we sat down. They were trying to give us a dish of walnut shrimp. This is before they even gave us a menu or drinks. All I ever saw was their little white order slip, they brought up tea right away too so initially we thought wow great service service but things took an ugly turn. We said no to the food that they were offering we asked for drinks. Next thing you know they're bringing over dim sum plates that we didn't order and putting it on our table and then someone in the group ordered shrimp because the vegetable dish that they offered was way too expensive. They only had one veg dish that was $22, they dropped off that plate of shrimp, it was the same exact dish that had been floating around before we ever came into the restaurant the same one they tried to push on us when we initially sat down, that they had initially tried to give us when we sat down. that shrimp wasn't even warm. It was room temperature, and there was A HAIR IN THE SHRIMP, and that was the final straw in a matter of the two minutes, maximum three minutes from when we sat down to find the hair they had tried to trap us there by putting a bunch of plates on our table that we didn't order, lots of chicken feet I remember, some kind of dumplings and sautéed meat but all of it we did not order, because we were never given us a menu. We wanted food made to order not premade. they had a bunch of food already made that they're trying to pawn off on us.. and we told him we're not eating here after finding the hair in the shrimp they said, but you already have plates on your table you have to pay for. I've been coming to this restaurant for almost 30 years, it's a family tradition. Over the past few years we've noticed a decline in service as our server (the same one for almost 30 years) is increasingly moody and on some visits rude for no apparent reason. The food had always been great so we put up with it. Today he was especially moody and our service was bad, 2 dishes brought out early and the rest of our food brought out almost 20 min later. When we tried flagging him down he yelled across the restaurant "you need to wait". Then came our garlic shrimp, the shrimp was so chewy clearly old and overcooked. The shrimp fried rice had some burnt areas and lacked flavor. None of the dishes tasted the way they should and we're experts I mean we order the same stuff everytime. When I took my son to go look at the lobster tanks I noticed that all but 2 of the lobsters were dead just stacked on top of each other. That's pretty gross and off putting. We decided this was our last year visiting for our Mother's Day tradition. Place is too expensive for rude service and old seafood. It's no wonder it's never packed like it used to be. Tan Kimsu has the most consistently delicious dim sum selection that I've ever had and it is always a great experience when I come here! The inside has a large and open seating arrangement with a lot of tables and a small stage area for group events. Since it is a dim sum restaurant, there are carts coming around on a constant cycle with attendants and waiters also available for made to order entrees or a la carte orders. The service is fast, easy and the staff are very helpful and attentive. The variety of food is a delight! I come here with a group of people and we all have our different go to orders. My favorites are the fried rice, honey walnut shrimp, dumplings and shumai! I don't usually drink tea but I love the tea here! I also hear great things about the other food items my group gets as well. I'd say there's something for everyone here if they're a fan of Chinese food in general! Outside of the name, there's nothing that reminds me of those good childhood memories of eating here for my 2005 HS graduation nor my family engagement dinner in 2021. There were no real pieces of shrimp and the meat tastes like the frozen stuff you get from Chinese markets. The rice paper shrimp was mostly rice paper with little shrimp. The honey walnut shrimp was cold and barely had a crunch to it. We came on a Saturday morning, prime dim sum time, yet most of the food we got was cold or lukewarm like it had been sitting out. -Service, they had your classic Chinese carts and your classic pushy Asian women. They'll try to sell you everything on their cart, don't matter if you want it or not. Stay strong or you'll end up getting way more than you thought you ordered.... -price, this is the biggest offense, everything costs 1 or 2 dollars more than your typical dim sum and tastes worse than how it did under the old ownership. They even had the audacity to charge us a seasonal price on the cold honey walnut shrimp that had no price on it...... Positives: -ambiance/decor, gone is the old decor. Now it's all modern and ready for weddings. Sad part is, I wouldn't be having my wedding here because I'd never hear the end of the complaints about the bad tasting food........
