This place is spacious and clean. They have their own lot so parking is easy to find. This place probably has more people for dinner but for lunch/late lunch, it's not crowded at all. We felt lucky to stumble in after we walked out on Sam Woo next door since they were way too crowded. Food: Good overall. The fried rice was fragrant and easy to eat. Always a good choice when you don't know what to get from a new place. The shredded tofu salad was refreshing and light! The stinky tofu wasn't very stinky so even my mom could eat it. I prefer more "funk" when it comes to it but it wasn't bad. It had a really good crispy skin that was super satisfying to eat. My mom said the steamed fish tasted super good. Fresh and didn't have a weird fishy taste or anything. Getting my mother's seal of approval can be quite hard so I'd recommend giving this place a chance! We certainly chose quite safe dishes but their menu is large. I'm sure you're bound to find something you like :) Service: Decent but not very attentive. Stumbled across this place. The menus is large and varied. We ordered the Hunan style pork and Lamb with Cilantro. It took a while but it made sense once we got our food--everything was very fresh. An tasty and relatively affordable way to dine on classic Hunan cooking! We ordered the eggplant, braised pork and hunan-style fish, and was very full and satisfied with our purchase for 3 people. Rice is charged per person, but absolutely necessary to absorb the flavors. Some of the flavors are a bit toned down (possibly to adjust to the larger local population of Cantonese and Taiwanese customers) but still hits the nodes necessary for an authentic experience. Finally glad to see them open as this was under construction for many months. And strangely the interior isn't much different from the predecessor Nine Dining. Nine Dining had not only taken over the space formerly occupied by Cafe Spot, and then later New Haojing, but took over the entire shopping center to build a large upscale skewer centric restaurant. That experiment failed fairly quickly, but hopefully Xianglalou will make a go of it. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. This would be my first zero-star review. All the five-star reviews are a scam. Let's talk about the food first. We went there on a Sunday afternoon, and it looked like the waiter was having a bad day. He seemed very upset. When we ordered, he blamed me rushing him to place the order with a bad attitude. We ordered five dishes, but three of them were unavailable due to "missing ingredients." Excuse me? These were very common dishes, not anything fancy. How is that possible? When the food finally came out, I was completely shocked. All the dishes tasted exactly the same--salty and flavorless. The portions were small. I was very confused, especially since this restaurant had gone viral on social media. After I paid the bill, the waiter asked me to leave five-star reviews on Yelp and Google Maps. He told me to send both the receipt and screenshots of my five-star reviews to the manager then the manager will send me the coupon. Even after doing all of that, I never received the promised "coupon." Now I understand how this place went VIRAL, and get all good reviews with five stars on yelps and google map--it's definitely a scam. Save your money and go somewhere else. "A Rather Disappointing Dining Experience" Excited to try a new restaurant, we ordered the signature pickled fish dish. After a long wait--during which we finished three vegetarian dishes and a cold appetizer--the main course finally arrived. It looked decent at first glance, but the first bite revealed an overpowering fishy taste. The ingredients were clearly not fresh, failing to mask the unpleasant odor. When we asked our friends for their opinions, they all agreed: the fish was unpleasantly fishy and stale. We called over the staff, and two servers arrived. Instead of apologizing, their immediate response was defensive: "This dish couldn't possibly be stale because we use frozen fish, not fresh fish!"* I was baffled. First，how could they dismiss our feedback without even tasting it? Second，shouldn't they apologize first instead of shifting blame? Third，since when does frozen fish guarantee freshness or eliminate fishiness? What kind of flawed logic is that? The two servers stared at us and asked, "So, what do you want us to do?"We requested a replacement dish--stir-fried lamb. Another 20-minute wait later, it arrived. The first bite: overwhelmingly salty**. The second bite: **still unbearably salty**. Was the salt shaker accidentally dumped into the wok? Or was this some kind of spiteful seasoning retaliation? We tried three nonspicy dishes and all three are pretty good. The sauce for the Loofah with egg is pretty neutral and the loofah tastes fresh. The steamed pork with preserved vegetable is better than most from other places because of the slightly spiciness. The saltiness of the preserved vegetable is just right. Steamed scallops is quite oily but tastes very good because they put a lot of garlic (I like garlic). Our overall experience is a good one and I do want to come back to try some of the other dishes.
