It's Dec 2025, and Xing Yuan is still my "go-to" place for Chinese takeout food on the West End of Alameda. I'm 2nd Gen ABC, and their good cooking hasn't changed over the years. My favs include Chicken Chow Mein Hong Kong Style, Beef Chow Fun, Singapore Rice Noodles, Won Ton Soup, and Potstickers. And OMG, the occasional outbursts of yelling in chinese brings back old memories of eating at a Chinatown restaurant. The broth was absolutely delicious especially in the spicy wonton! I can say without a doubt that it was the best spicy wonton that I've ever had. It was so flavorful and the spiciness was perfect. Left with a bitter taste--literally and figuratively. I wanted to give this place a try, but unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience from start to finish. Right off the bat, our server was rude and rushed us while we were ordering -- and no, it wasn't even close to closing time. Anytime we asked for something, she gave us attitude, which made the entire meal uncomfortable. Not wanting to cause a scene, we just asked for the bill so we could leave. We paid with a card, but the server claimed the payment didn't go through and insisted we pay in cash. Wanting to just get out of there, we complied. The next day, we saw that the original card payment had gone through, meaning we were charged twice. We tried calling to resolve the issue, but were met with dodging, confusion, and even hang-ups -- no one seemed interested in helping or taking responsibility. Definitely won't be going back. Xing yuan is located in the Marina Village shopping center so plenty of parking. On a Tues lunch, nobody in here but a constant stream of takeout orders. We had the won ton soup, beef chow fun, sweet and sour pork and the salt and pepper chicken wings. Everything was OK, not bad, not great, just OK. The won ton had a decent amount of veggies and cha sui. About 8 won tons that were just OK. The beef chow fun had good flavor and no MSG. Again portion size just meh. Sweet and sour was good although a little skimpy on the pineapple. The chicken wings were very good, a little too hot but great once they cooled down. Ten years to the date from when I wrote my original review for this place, the food remains top tier and delicious. My family and I have continued to remain customers in that time, but while the food hasn't lost its quality, the service and state of the restaurant are a different story. Things are looking rough in here these days, and it started around Covid. The booth seats are shredded, the TV, which appears to no longer get any use, is covered in plastic up on the wall in the corner, and you don't even get the courtesy of real glasses with dinner. You get paper cups instead. I was expecting plastic cutlery and was legitimately surprised when real utensils were set for us. The waitress, who's been there for at least the last decade, is now as unwelcoming as it gets. She acts like dine-in guests are invading her personal space and it's almost as though her aim is to make them feel as uncomfortable as possible so they either take their food to-go or just leave altogether. We said hi with a smile as we walked in and she looked flabbergasted that there were people in the restaurant, then she seated us without a word, dropped the menus in front of us, and huffed off. Never said "you're welcome" to any of our thank-yous and only got a little friendlier once it came close to giving us the check -- likely looking for a decent tip. This isn't surprising behavior -- not the first restaurant I've ever been in that's treated guests this way and won't be the last -- it's just disappointing. They have rave reviews for their food, as they should because it's fantastic, but all they seem to care about is pulling in cash. They do a ton of take-out service, so maybe they've just gotten more used to quick, impersonal transactions in the last four years. But the use of disposable cups in lieu of the glasses they once used, along with the state of the dining room, communicates a sense of cheapness and a general lack of respect for their diners more than anything else, so I'm feeling less charitable and less willing to extend them much grace. Get the Mongolian beef, chicken with asparagus, kung pao chicken, chow fun, beef with scrambled egg, war won ton soup, and the potstickers. Forget the fried won tons -- they've shrunk in size by at least 50% and no longer have little pieces of pork in them, so they're not worth it. Everything else is hot, fresh, and cooked to perfection, and the portions are generous. The veggies maintain the perfect amount of crispness, the meat isn't mushy and overly tender, and the sauces are flavorful and rich. But take it to-go unless you like being made to feel as welcome as the plague. Might explain why take-out has become so popular here. read more

We were in the mood for some ABC Chinese food. Basically we were nostalgic for those Chinese American dishes we grew up with. Xing Yuan fits the bill. They serve solid food at decent prices. What we ordered: + Chinese chicken salad (5/10) - my least favorite. Chicken should be shredded, but instead it was battered and dried. Did not detect that Chinese mustard zing and no peanuts. I suppose everyone has their own recipe, but this didn't resemble the Chinese chicken salad I grew up with. + Mongolian beef (8/10) - the flavor was good and had a little heat. The meat was very soft. + Dry braised green beans (8/10) - good + Sweet and sour pork (7/10) - good flavor, but batter on the pork was a little soggy (maybe just a problem with takeout) and pork was a little dry. Very few pineapples. + House special chow mein (9/10) - thick noodles just like I remembered + Honey walnut prawns (10/10) - so good. They give you extra mayo dressing on the side, but I didn't find that necessary. I like the prawns underdressed and still a little crispy. Ordered the food on DoorDash. I would say that this food ain't too bad, the food has a good amount of flavor. My friend and I ordered the Prawn & Snow Pea Chow Fun, Salt & Pepper Fish, and the Black Pepper Beef w/ Rice. The Black Pepper Beef dish was suppose to come with rice, but they gave us the entrée instead; I wasn't mad at it because it had a lot of flavor, but I wish there was more beef than just the onions and peppers. It's a very small place, nothing fancy. The service was good, the lady was very nice about everything. I would definitely try this place again and try the other items they have on their menu. Went on a weekday between work and meetings looking for a fairly quick lunch. Sat down ordered the Scrambled Egg with Beef weekday lunch special which comes with tea, Hot & Sour Soup, your entree, slice of orange, and the lucky fortune cookie. The waitress asked if I wanted my Scrambled Eggs with Beef made with less oil, meaning more dry, versus a version that is oilyer and more runny. Glad they asked me as I would rather have less oil in my old age. FYI - there are oily versions of this dish which I have had elsewhere. Taste was as expected which is want you want for a work day lunch. Fairly large portion and the Waitress boxed the rest up for me! A small little humble Mom & Pop Chinese restaurant located on the west end offering consistent delicious meals through the years. I can't believe I haven't left a review prior. So glad I'm doing this now as the reviews are long over due. Below are my regular go to dishes although I have seen many more on the menu.. Beef with Broccoli Oyster Sauce, General Tso's Chicken is epic (it comes with broccoli but oh so so good) you will never go wrong with this dish! It has a bit of the crunch and flavorful caramelization and is always gone before I could grab a 2nd bite because everyone loves it!!! Kids and adults alike all fight for this dish as well. Another favorite is BBQ Pork Fried Rice always brightly colored with vegetables and texture of fried rice is spot on not greasy like other places. And yet another favorite of mine is Dry Braised String Beans! I wish the owner add fried tofu to this dish as an option for $1! A girl can dream right? Garlic Prawn sounds very good and it is as well but to me there are way to much onions in this dish...more onions than garlic prawns. I also was reluctant to RE-order this because part of me hope that the garlic prawns taste more garlicky and slightly crispy in finish rather than a sauté finish. Through the years we could count on their home made food offerings always made fresh to order and with the love and care of quality! They used to offer free local Alameda delivery on yelp with a minimum $40 order too but these days there is with a fee by yelp. COVID19 or not Xing Yuan is highly recommended by me! I got the dinner special,Okay so the sesame chicken tastes like old oil,the flavor was not so bad but you can taste like the old oil so harder pieces. the noodles were definitely overcooked as well as the veggies in it you could tell how they looked and the texture and they also were on the Bland side Broccoli and beef was a little bit better some pretty okay flavoring the meat was tender but the broccoli was a little bit overcooked *they did accommodate me and change the order from Mongolian beef to the broccoli beef )so I definitely appreciate that they're chicken and corn soup was the best thing flavorful and nice pieces of chicken and nice piece of corn and egg their Fried Chicken potstickers were a little bit too fried/burnt for me overall the place wasn't super bad I'd probably give them another try just to see if maybe it was an off day. This is the best Chinese takeout in Alameda. The honey walnut prawns are amazing, as wells as the general Tso chicken. We love them!

My complaint is service. There isn't any! I went in and ordered food to go. No eye contact while placing the order and none when order was ready. The lady did not even bother to look up from her phone at me! It was a to go order so really no service needed but an acknowledgment would have been nice. Maybe say a hello? Or "May I help you? What would you like to order?" Or even a thank you to show a tad bit of appreciation for my business? As I was about to leave, a party of three walked in and waited at the door. No one greeted them or seated them at a table. After standing there and looking somewhat awkward, they just grinned, grabbed some menus and sat themselves down at a table. Service lacks regardless if you are dining in or taking orders to go. Oh! And the food? It was just okay. The beef chow mein had no vegetables other than green onions. Some shredded cabbage or bean sprouts would have been great but it was just beef and noodles. The beef chow fun had some bok choy but the dish was sweet. Sorry, but I won't be returning. The service here is fast but not always responsive. They get overwhelmed at lunchtimes during the rush sometimes. I come for the food, not the service. There is typically no wait here. The hot & sour soup was a B+. It was mildly spicy, but a little oversalted. Last time I came here before COVID-19 they sat me a table. I ordered and brought me my food. Then they moved me to another table so they could make more room for customers. No biggie. But could have just sat me at the other table in the first place. The food here is pretty good.
